Personal computer history:

  • 1997 - The Republic of China issues two postage stamp on the use of integrated circuits, showing a personal computer.
  • 2002 - Nvidia releases a new set of graphics chips for low-end personal computers.
  • 2004 - The first virus that infects Windows CE appears.
  • 2004 - Microsoft agrees to pay US$20 million to Lindows to settle its trademark dispute. Lindows will give up its name, changing to Linspire.
  • 2007 - Intel releases the Core 2 Extreme Mobile X7800 processor, at US$851 in quantities of 1000.
  • 2007 - Intel releases the Core 2 Duo E6540 and E6550 processors, at US$163 in quantities of 1000. Model Duo E6750 costs US$183; model Duo E6850 costs US$266; model Quad Q6700 costs US$530; model Extreme QX6800 costs US$999; model Extreme Qx6850 (3 GHz, 8 MB cache, 1333 MHz front-side bus) costs US$999.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - A theater in Los Angeles previews the 56th (last) Alice Comedy film, Alice in the Big League.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Dragon Around. Chip and Dale also appear.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the animated short film Casey at the Bat to theaters. It was originally part of the film Make Mine Music.
  • 1984 - A meeting of Disney's board of directors votes 9-to-4 in favor of the modified Gibson Greetings deal.
  • 1989 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, featuring Wild Jack, part three.
  • 1991 - The Disney Villains shop opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Hocus Pocus to theaters in the US.
  • 1994 - The Lion King soundtrack album hits the top of the Billboard chart.
  • 1995 - Michael Eisner discusses the Capital Cities/ABC deal with Peter Murphy, Tom Staggs, and Sid Bass. They like the deal.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film George of the Jungle to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Nothing to Lose to theaters in the USA.
  • 2005 - Disney hosts a fund-raising event aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship in the Port of San Pedro, California, with special events throughout the ship for the over 1000 guests. US$1.04 million is raised and donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Disney Company presents a second check for US$1 million.
  • 2010 - Disney releases the live-action feature film The Sorcerer's Apprentice to theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1972 - At Croft in Yorkshire, England, a British Modified Sports Car series race is held. Finishing 1st is the #101 1968 L89 Rally Red convertible Corvette, driven by Rhoddy Harvey-Bailey.
  • 1989 - In Cocoa Beach, Florida, a parade celebrates the 20th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 11 and man's first steps on the Moon. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin ride in Corvettes in the parade.
  • 1993 - "The Today Show" on television includes mention of the National Corvette Museum, and the Corvette's 40th Anniversary.
  • 2000 - In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Molson Indy race is held, round seven of the Grand-Am Motorola Cup series.
    • Finishing 2nd in SGS class and 2nd overall is the First Racing #22 Corvette, driven by Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing 4th in SGS class and 4th overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 5th in SGS class and 5th overall is the Planet Earth Motorsports #43 Corvette, driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Bill Pate.
    • Finishing 6th in SGS class and 6th overall is the Powell Motorsports #30 Corvette, driven by Peter Tonelli and Craig Conway.
    • Finishing ?th in SGS class and 46th overall is the Phoenix American Motorsports #37 Corvette, driven by ? Dalcin and John Heinricy.

  • 2004 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, round four of the American Le Mans Series is held. During a 30-minute pre-race practice session, Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Corvette Racing #8 Corvette C5-R spins off-track, hits a wall, and the car ignites. Earnhardt suffers minor burns in the face and legs, and the car is withdrawn from the race.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 4th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTS class and 18th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.

  • 2005 - At the Finning International Speedway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix of Edmonton race is held, round five of the Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 4th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 5th is the Tony Ave Racing #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • In 7th place, but not finishing the race, is the Derhaag Motorsports #78 Corvette, driven by Hima Maher.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 11th overall is the DRG Motorsports #40 Corvette, driven by Dennis Goruk.

  • 2005 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma race is held, round seven of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 1st is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette C6, driven by Tony Gaples.
    • In 19th place, but not finishing the race, is the Banner Engineering #6 Corvette C6, driven by Leighton Reese.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette Z06, driven by Sonny Whelen.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 16: On preparations for a landing operation against England. The landing would be on a wide front from Ramsgate to west of the Isle of Wight. Preparations are to be completed by mid-August. First, the English Air Force must be reduced to pose no threat to a German crossing, mined channels must be cleared, Straits of Dover are to be sealed off with minefields on both flanks, and the English Navy must be held down in the North Sea and Mediterranean. Invasion will bear name Seelöwe (Sea Lion).
  • 1941 - A large pocket of about 300,000 Soviet forces surrender in Smolensk.
  • 1941 - 36 British Blenheim bombers attack Rotterdam port, hitting 22 ships. Four planes are shot down.
  • 1941 - In Japan, Prince Fumimaro Konoye resigns the cabinet, to remove foreign minister Matsuoka.
  • 1944 - German Colonel Count Klaus von Stauffenberg carries a bomb in a briefcase to a conference with Adolf Hitler, but does not use it due to lack of other important Nazi leaders.
  • 1945 - Royal Canadian Navy cruiser Uganda joins an attack on the main Japanese island of Honshu.
  • 1945 - The United States successfully tests the first plutonium atomic bomb, at the Alamo-gordo airbase in New Mexico.
  • 1945 - USS Indianapolis departs from San Francisco, headed for Tinian island in the Marianas, carrying components for the first atomic bomb to be detonated in combat.
  • 1995 - French President Jacques Chirac make a speech, formally apologizing for French involvement in the deportation of Jews during the war.

Video game history:

  • 1981 - Nintendo unveils the second Widescreen Game & Watch, titled Octopus.
  • 2007 - Sony announces it will discontinue the $499 PlayStation 3 in the USA, leaving only the US$599 model on sale.

Swedish history:

  • 1648 - Swedes capture the Kleinseite suburb of Prague with the royal Hradschin palace of Emperor Rudolf II.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1975 - In Calgary, Alberta, the Canadian Numismatic Association holds its annual convention.

USA coin history:

  • 1988 - (to July 17) Auction '88 is held in Cincinnati, Ohio. Total auction sales: $12.8 million. Some highlights:
    • US $10 1908, with motto, MS-68: $88,000;
    • US $3 1863, MS-67: $82,500;
    • US 1896 proof set, MS65+ to MS-67: $275,000;
    • US $5 1894-S, MS-69 NGC: $115,500.

Sports history:

  • 1909 - American League's longest scoreless game, Washington Senators and Detroit Tigers 0-0 in 18 innings.
  • 1920 - Babe Ruth sets season home run record with 30 en route to 54.
  • 1920 - US wins Davis Cup sweeping Australia in five straight matches.
  • 1941 - Joe Dimaggio goes three for four, hitting in his 56th straight game.
  • 1947 - Bobo Newsom wins 200th game, first as a New York Yankees player and New York Yankees 18th straight.
  • 1950 - Single day 16-team home run record set at 37 (National League-25, American League-12).
  • 1950 - Uruguay beats Brazil 2-1 for soccer's fourth World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1956 - Detroit Tigers and Briggs Stadium sold for record US$5.5 million.
  • 1960 - 205,000 (record sports attendance) see Brazil-Uruguay World Cup soccer.
  • 1960 - George Crowe sets record of 12 pinch-hit home runs with a runner on.
  • 1961 - Ralph Boston of the US sets long jump record at 27 feet 2 inches.
  • 1970 - Pittsburgh Pirates replaces Forbes Field with Three River Stadium.
  • 1985 - NBC is first TV network to air a program in stereo, the Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. National League beats American League 6-1 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • 1987 - Don Mattingly hits his fourth grand slam of the season and ties American League record.
  • 1988 - Jackie Joyner-Kersee sets women's hepathlete record of 7,215 points.
  • 1988 - San Antonio (Texas League) beats Jackson 1-0 in 26 innings.
  • 2000 - An 1919 Chicago 'Black Sox' autographed baseball is auctioned for US$93,666 on eBay. The ball's autographs include "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.
  • 2006 - Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees records his 400th career save. becoming the fourth major leaguer to reach the milestone.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-1.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Yankees beats Boston Red Sox by score 14-1.
  • 2022 - At LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, USA , Major League Baseball regular season game: Philadelphia Phillies beats Miami Marlins by score 10-0.

  • 1982 - George P. Shultz begins term as US Secretary of State.
  • 1985 - F-86 Sabre sets world aircraft speed record of 1152 kph (716 mph).
  • 1986 - Dolly Parton's "Dollywood" amusement park opens in Tennessee.
  • 1990 - New York City's Empire State Building catches fire; no fatalities.
  • 1992 - Independent U.S. presidential candidate H. Ross Perot drops out of the race, saying that the Democratic Party has 'revitalized itself'.
  • 1992 - Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton is nominated for U.S. President and Tennessee Senator Al Gore for Vice President, at the Democratic National Convention in New York City.
  • 1997 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains 63.17 to close at 8,038.88. It is the Dow's first close above 8,000. The Dow has doubled its value in 30 months.
  • 1999 - Off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, a plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Junior crashes, killing him and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette.
  • 2007 - The US State Department imposes restrictions on importation of ancient coins "of Cypriot types" issued before 225 BCE.
