Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP-86 microcomputer. Price is US$1795.
  • 1982 - Hewlett-Packard introduces an upgraded HP-87 microcomputer, with increased memory.
  • 1993 - An article by Mike Feibus in the Microprocessor Report calls the EPA's Energy Star initiative "a marketing gimmick with about as much meaning as a 'Lite' label on a package of bacon."
  • 1999 - Packard Bell NEC introduces a new line of inexpensive personal computers, ranging from a US$499 Celeron system and a US$999 Pentium III system.
  • 2000 - Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows. It adds improved support for Cascading Style Sheets, Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, and dynamic HTML.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases Mac OS X 10.4.2 operating system.
  • 2006 - The European Commission fines Microsoft US$356 million for failing to comply with orders to share information about the Windows operating system for servers.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - The Piccadilly Theater in New York City premieres the Alice Comedy film Alice Wins the Derby.
  • 1925 - M.J. Winkler Productions releases the Alice Comedy film Alice Solves the Puzzle to theaters. Bootleg Pete debuts, who later evolves into Peg Leg Pete in the Mickey Mouse films.
  • 1926 - Disney ships the 37th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Spanish Guitar, to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1942 - The last Silly Symphony color comic strip is published.
  • 1957 - The Shooting Gallery attraction opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1961 - The first draft of a screenplay is completed for the film Mary Poppins.
  • 1961 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Nikki, Wild Dog of the North to theaters. The film is based on the novel Nomads of the North by James Curwood.
  • 1972 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Now You See Him, Now You Don't to theaters.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs NBC Nights at the Movies featuring The Parent Trap.
  • 1984 - The Show Biz Is show begins in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1987 - The TV show Cameo by Night airs on NBC.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs The Disney Channel Premiere Film Great Expectations, part three.
  • 1989 - The Star Tours attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1991 - Disney re-releases the film 101 Dalmatians to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network airs the last episode of the TV show Dangerous Minds.
  • 2000 - On The Tonight Show on TV, a skit airs in which host Jay Leno steals a Disneyland Autopia car, driving it onto the show with Donald Duck chasing him.
  • 2003 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Reign of Fire to theaters in the US.
  • 2015 - The Animation Academy class at The Magic of Disney Animation in Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World closes.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1959 - At Bridgehampton, a car race is held.
    • Finishing 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Roy Tuerke.
    • Finishing 3rd overall is the Corvette driven by Rob Willoughby.

  • 1975 - At the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit in Watkins Glen, New York, Round 5 of the SCCA Trans-American Championship is held, with the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen World Championship of Makes.
    • Finishing 1st in Trans-Am class and 9th overall is the Babe's Garage Corvette 427, driven by Babe Headley and Paul Misuriello.
    • Finishing 2nd in Trans-Am class and 11th overall is the E.F. Miller & Co. Corvette 454, driven by John Orr and Bill Jobe.
    • Finishing 4th in Trans-Am class and 13th overall is the Little Foreign Car Shop Corvette, driven by Michael Oleyar and Sam Feinstein.
    • Finishing 5th in Trans-Am class and 15th overall is a Corvette 350, driven by Allan Anderson and Ray Anton.
    • Finishing 6th in Trans-Am class and 16th overall is the Pierce Racing Corvette, driven by Roger Pierce and Alex Davidson.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Units of the 1st Canadian Division land at Brest, France, and head toward Laval and Le Mans.
  • 1941 - An Anglo-Soviet mutual assistance agreement is signed.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler removes Field Marshal Fedor von Bock from command of Army Group South, for failing to eliminate Soviet forces west of the Don River in Russia.
  • 1942 - Convoy OS-34 departs from west of Ireland, heading to Sierra Leone.
  • 1942 - The Canadian Army authorizes almost 700 officers and men to move to the United States for training as part of the First Special Service Force.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces take Ragusa, in southern Sicily.
  • 1943 - The Soviet Briansk Front under Markian Popov launches Operation Kutuzov, an attack against the German salient in Orel, north of Kursk.
  • 1943 - In the Kursk battle, German SS Panzer Corp with 400 tanks reaches Prokhorovka Station. Soviet 5th Guards Tank Army under P.A. Rotmistrov with 800 tanks counterattacks. By the end of the day, 320 German tanks and over 400 Soviet tanks are destroyed.
  • 1943 - (evening) British bombers attack Turin, Italy.
  • 1944 - Count Klaus von Stauffenberg again carries a bomb in a briefcase to a conference with Adolf Hitler, but with Heinrich Himmler not also present, he does not detonate it.
  • 1944 - (evening) Soviet forces commence a great new summer offensive against German Army Group North, opening a huge gap in the German front line.
  • 1944 - Field Marshal Günther von Kluge returns from a tour of the front line in the west, agreeing with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel that the Allies will crack the German defences and the entire front will crumble within a month.
  • 1944 - The Swedish government promises to cut exports to Germany by sixty percent for four months, in return for compensation from Allied countries.
  • 1945 - The Japanese government orders the Japanese ambassador in Moscow to approach the Russian government for mediation to end the war.
  • 2005 - The Gambia issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of VJ Day.

Video game history:

  • 1987 - Konami releases the Metal Gear video game for the MSX2 system in Japan.
  • 1991 - Compile releases the Spriggan video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1991 - Columbia Pictures releases the film Boyz n the Hood to theaters in the USA. The game Duck Hunt is played on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
  • 2002 - Bandai releases the Swan Crystal color handheld video game player in Japan. It features 2.8-inch diagonal TFT LCD screen, four-channel stereo sound, compatibility with earlier WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color games, Blue Velvet or Wine Red case. Price is 7800 yen.
  • 2005 - EA Sports releases the NCAA Football 2006 video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - EA Sports releases the NCAA Football 06 video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Vivendi Universal releases the Flat Out video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2011 - EA Sports releases the NCAA Football 12 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1947 - (to September 22) The Paris Conference is held, attended by 16 nations, including Sweden, to discuss closer contacts and cooperation.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1981 - The Royal Canadian Mint produces a set of 12-sided one-cent test tokens.
  • 2002 - In Vancouver, British Columbia, the Canadian Numismatic Association holds its annual convention, over three days. The Canadian Coinoisseur conducts the auction of the Douglas Mason Collection. Auction highlights:
    • 50 cents 1910 Victorian leaves ICCS MS-65: $75,000;
    • 50 cents 1921 ICG MS-65: $104,500.

USA coin history:

  • 1966 - US Treasury announces it will buy mutilated silver coins at silver price.
  • 1995 - The House Banking Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy hears from Harvey Stack (New York coin dealer), David Ganz (ANA President), and Alan Stahl (American Numismatic Society curator) on abuses in the commemorative coin programs. Stack suggests the US Mint strike a series of circulating commemorative coins honoring the first 13 states, followed by coins for the remaining states, similar to the Canada 125 program of 25-cent coins for each province.

Sports history:

  • 1914 - Babe Ruth makes his baseball debut, pitching for the Boston Red Sox.
  • 1928 - First televised tennis match.
  • 1931 - Chicago Cubs and Saint Louis Cardinals hit a record 23 doubles in a game (second game of designated hitter).
  • 1937 - Don Budge wins Davis Cup of tennis by defeating Baron Gottfried von Cramm.
  • 1946 - Vance Dinges hits the only Philadelphia Phillies' pinch hit inside-the-park home run.
  • 1949 - American League beats National League 11-7 in 16th All Star Game, National League makes a record five errors.
  • 1949 - Baseball owners agree to erect warning paths before each fence.
  • 1950 - ILTF re-admits Germany and Japan in Davis Cup, Poland and Hungary withdraw.
  • 1951 - New York Yankees' Allie Reynolds no-hits Cleveland Indians, 8-0.
  • 1954 - Major League Baseball Players Association founded.
  • 1955 - National League beats American League 6-5 (12 innings) in 22nd All Star Game (Milwaukee).
  • 1966 - National League beats American League 2-1 (10 innings) in 37th All Star Game (Busch, Saint Louis).
  • 1967 - 5th Mayor's Trophy Game, New York Mets beat New York Yankees 4-0.
  • 1979 - A Disco Demolition Night publicity stunt goes awry at Comiskey Park, forcing the Chicago White Sox to forfeit their game against the Detroit Tigers.
  • 1987 - Philadelphia Phillies' Kent Tekulve pitches his 900th game in relief.
  • 1989 - New York Yankees' pitching great Ron Guidry retires (170-91 .651, 3.29 ERA).
  • 1990 - Chicago White Sox player Melido Perez no-hits the New York Yankees 8-0 in a rain.
  • 1998 - France defeats Brazil 3-0 to win the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
  • 2009 - In Nurburgring, Germany, round 9 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Mark Webber.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 13-0.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Los Angeles Angels by score 6-5.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats San Diego Padres by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Detroit Tigers beats Kansas City Royals by score 7-5.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Texas Rangers by score 14-7.

  • 2006 - Israeli troops invade Lebanon in response to Hezbollah kidnapping two Israeli soldiers and killing three. Hezbollah declares open war against Israel two days later.
