Personal computer history:

  • 1994 - Gary Kildall dies in a bar brawl, at age 52. He was a microcomputer industry visionary and pioneer, most well-known for creating the CP/M operating system.
  • 2001 - Adobe Systems releases PageMaker 7.0. Full package price is US$499; upgrade price is US$79.
  • 2002 - Microsoft begins selling routers for home networking.
  • 2006 - Microsoft ceases providing new security patches for Windows 98, 98 SE, and Millenium Edition.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Medicine Show to theaters.
  • 1927 - Story work begins on the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film The Ocean Hop.
  • 1930 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Shindig.
  • 1941 - RKO Radio Pictures releases the Donald Duck film Early to Bed to theaters.
  • 1947 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Donald's Dilemma to theaters. Daisy Duck also appears.
  • 1953 - The Goofy film How to Dance is released.
  • 1974 - The syndicated television special Herbie Day at Disneyland airs.
  • 1986 - The Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour opens in Cinderella Castle in Fantasyland at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1986 - In France, the Paris regional council approves plans for a Disneyland style amusement park in Marne-la-Vallée.
  • 1987 - The Disney Gallery opens in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. The Art of Disneyland 1953-1986 is the first exhibition.
  • 1991 - Disney announces a deal with Pixar for John Lasseter to write and direct a full-length computer animated film for Disney to distribute.
  • 1995 - The NBC TV network airs the last episode of the Disney series Pride & Joy.
  • 1998 - In Platteville, Wisconsin, Mickey's Hometown Parade is performed. A resident of the city was the grand-prize winner in an essay contest.
  • 2001 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A character dies laughing, and it's emerging angel continues laughing, similar to the way the weasels die in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.
  • 2002 - Buena Vista International releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Argentina.
  • 2020 - The Magic Kingdom and Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World re-open.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - Aluminum cowl and door bracing is added to GM's Assembly Instruction Manual.
  • 1990 - Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation releases the film The Adventures of Ford Fairlane to theaters in the USA. A Corvette is pushed down a hill and rolls over a group of motorcycles. A hand grenade is thrown in, and the car blows up.
  • 1992 - In Des Moines, Iowa, the second race of the SCCA World Challenge series is held.
    • Finishing 1st is the Dieline Motorsport / Doug Rippie Motorsports #2 Corvette LT1, driven by R.K. Smith.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Quaker State / Bows Town / Valley Chevrolet Corvette, driven by Shawn Hendricks.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Dieline Motorsport / Doug Rippie Motorsports Corvette, driven by Bill Cooper.
    • Finishing 5th is the Outpost Hunt & Sport Corvette, driven by Jay Sperry.

  • 1993 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the IMSA Piggly Wiggly Grand Prix of Road America race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in Invitational GT class is the Morrison Racing Corvette, driven by John Heinricy and Andy Pilgrim.
    • A second Morrison Racing Corvette finishes second in class.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - In the Soviet Union, Voroshilov, Timoshenko, and Budenny are appointed commanders of the north-west, west, and south-west sectors, respectively, of the war front.
  • 1941 - In the USA, the Co-ordinator of Intelligence (COI) is created.
  • 1942 - Montbatten calls a meeting of the main staffs involved in planning Operation Rutter, seeking support to remount the raid. His request is turned down. After the meeting, Mountbatten convinces a few to proceed with a new plan, Operation Jubilee, again on Dieppe, even without authority of the Chiefs of Staff.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive 43, for a continuation of operations in the Crimea, expanding into the Caucasus.
  • 1943 - In Russia, a Soviet reserve tank army is committed to the south of Kursk, halting the German advance.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces take Ispica, in southern Sicily.
  • 1944 - Soviet army reaches the outskirts of Vilna in Poland.
  • 1944 - The United States recognizes Charles de Gaulle and his committee as de facto representatives of the French people.
  • 1945 - The United States issues a postage stamp depicting Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima.
  • 1946 - A war crimes trial convicts Joachim Peiper, Sepp Dietrich, and 71 other former German SS officers and soldiers. Peiper and 42 others are sentenced to death.
  • 1994 - Sierra Leone issues three postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
  • 2005 - Grenada - Carriacou & Petite Martinique issues eight postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-J Day.

Video game history:

  • 2007 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony announces it will release a lighter, slimmer model of its PlayStation Portable handheld video game console in September. A revised PlayStation Portable is to be released in September. It will be 33 percent lighter, 19 percent slimmer, available in two additional case colors (silver and white), output to television, priced at US$169.99. Two bundles will be available: Daxter PlayStation Portable Entertainment Pack for US$199, and Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation Portable Entertainment Pack for US$199.

Swedish history:

  • 1897 - (about 1:30 PM) The hydrogen gas filled balloon Eagle lifts off from Danes Island, Spitzbergen, carrying Swedish Aeronauts Salomon August Andrée, Knut Fraenkel, and Nils Strindberg. They hope to reach the North Pole.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1984 - At an auction in London, England, a Canadian 1969 25-cent coin struck on a Prussian 1906 gold 20-marks coin is sold for 720 pounds (about $1200). The coin was illegally produced at the Royal Canadian Mint in 1969.
  • 2007 - The Canadian Numismatics Association holds its annual convention in Niagara Falls, Ontario, over five days. C&P Numismatics conducts the auction. Some highlights:
    • 5 cents 1921 PCGS MS-64: $52,325;
    • 10 cents 1858 8/5 ICCS AU-55: $13,800;
    • 50 cents 1921 ICCS MS-65: no sale.

USA coin history:

  • 1792 - Thomas Jefferson takes $75 worth of silver from George Washington to be coined.
  • 1792 - (to July 13) 1500 pieces of 1792 half dismes are minted in the basement of John Harper's saw-making establishment, near the mint in Philadelphia.
  • 1856 - US Mint Director James Ross Snowden writes Treasury Secretary James Guthrie asking for legislation for small copper-nickel cents.
  • 1873 - The Philadelphia Mint strikes first Trade dollars.
  • 1962 - Public Law 87-534 officially renames the San Francisco Mint as the United States Assay Office at San Francisco.
  • 1996 - Representative Michael Castle of Delaware introduces H.R. 3793 in the House of Representatives, calling for a series of circulating commemorative quarter dollar coins covering the 50 states.

Sports history:

  • 1931 - New York Giants beat Philadelphia Phillies 23-8.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees host 7th All Star Game, McCarthy starts 6 New York Yankees, American League wins 3-1.
  • 1944 - National League beats American League 7-1 in 12th All Star Game (Pittsburgh' Forbes Field).
  • 1950 - National League beats American League 4-3 (14 innings) in 17th All Star Game (Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois).
  • 1960 - National League beats American League 5-3 in 28th All Star Game (Municipal Stadium, Kansas City).
  • 1967 - Longest All Star Game, National League beats American League 2-1 (15 innings) (Anaheim Stadium, California).
  • 1971 - Philadelphia Phillies' Deron Johnson's three home runs caps his four in a row.
  • 1974 - World Football League plays first games.
  • 1978 - National League beats American League 7-3 in 49th All Star Game (San Diego Stadium).
  • 1981 - Sebastian Coe of United Kingdom sets record for 1000 metre, 2:12.18.
  • 1982 - Italy beats Federal Republic of Germany 3-1 for soccer's 12th World Cup in Madrid, Spain.
  • 1984 - National League beats American League 3-1 in 55th All Star Game (Candlestick Park San Francisco, California).
  • 1985 - Houston Astros' Nolan Ryan is first to strike out 4000 (New York Mets' Danny Heep).
  • 1986 - Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway runs 10,000 m in world record 30:13.74.
  • 1986 - Maricica Puica of Romania runs 2,000 m in 5:28.69 (record for women).
  • 1989 - US President Ronald Reagan sportscasts the All Star Game.
  • 1989 - American League beats National League 5-3, (third of last four All Star Games) in California.
  • 2007 - The ninth All Africa Games kick off in Algiers, Algeria.
  • 2008 - Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva breaks her own world record in the women's pole vault at Rome's Golden Gala meet, jumping 5.03 metres.
  • 2009 - (to July 19) The 2009 Lusophony Games take place, with athletes from 12 Portuguese-speaking nations taking part.
  • 2010 - Spain defeats Netherlands 1-0 winning the FIFA World Cup of soccer.
  • 2010 - Two bombs explode in Ugandan capital of Kampala, killing 74 people and injuring 70 in a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant; the bombings targeted football fans watching the World Cup final.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats San Francisco Giants by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Colorado Rockies by score 6-5.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Detroit Tigers by score 7-3.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Oakland Athletics by score 10-8.
  • 2022 - At Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Atlanta Braves by score 4-1.

  • 1991 - A total solar eclipse is seen in Hawaii and Mexico.
  • 2021 - After taking off from Spaceport America, in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, USA, VMS Eve carrier aircraft launches VSS Unity rocket plane, with two pilots and four passengers, which then flies into space and back.

  • 1888 - Pennsylvania's Monongehela River rises 32 feet after 24-hour rainfall.

  • 1781 - Thomas Hutchins is designated Geographer of the US.
  • 1798 - US President John Adams signs a bill into law creating the U.S. Marines.
  • 1804 - US Vice President Aaron Burr kills Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel near Weehawken.
  • 1812 - US invades Canada (Detroit frontier).
  • 1862 - US Congress authorizes another US$150 million in United States Notes.
  • 1864 - Price in gold of dollar bills drops to 39 cents, lowest point during the war.
  • 1888 - 118 degrees F (48 degrees C), Bennett, Colorado (state record).
