Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - Rod Brock of Seattle Computer Products offers a counterproposal to Microsoft for rights to 86-DOS: US$150,000 fee and right to license Microsoft languages at a discount with SCP hardware.
  • 1989 - In San Francisco, California, Intel officially announces and demonstrates the first EISA 82350 chip set. Full production is likely by September.
  • 2006 - Business Week magazine presents the Industrial Design Excellence Awards:
    • Gold award: Lenovo Opti Desktop PC, designed by ZIBA Design.
    • Silver award: Hundred-Dollar Laptop Computer, designed by Design Continuum.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film Mickey Steps Out. Pluto and Minnie Mouse also appear.
  • 1955 - The Scamp character first appears in the comic strip Treasure of Classic Tales Lady and the Tramp.
  • 1979 - Disney releases the live-action feature film The Spaceman and King Arthur in England. The film is based on Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
  • 1981 - Disney releases the animated short film compilation Once upon a Mouse to theaters.
  • 1981 - Buena Vista releases the animated feature film The Fox and the Hound to theaters in the US. This is the first major animated film effort of the "new generation" of Disney artists.
  • 1982 - The day after the release of the film Tron, Disney stock falls 2.5 points.
  • 1987 - Disney releases the animated film The Brave Little Toaster to theaters. The animation was created by Hyperion Pictures.
  • 1989 - Lesotho issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters as French revolutionaries.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs The Disney Channel Premiere Film Great Expectations, part two.
  • 1993 - The TV special Disneyland Presents Tales of Toontown airs.
  • 1993 - The TV pilot Country Estates airs.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1976 - At the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit, in Watkins Glen, New York, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen World Championship of Makes and Round 4 of the SCCA Trans-American Challenge series race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 12th overall is the Babe's Garage #78 Corvette 427, driven by Babe Headley and Sam Feinstein.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 17th overall is the #93 Corvette 427, driven by Michael Oleyar and Richard Weiss.
    • Finishing 5th in category I and 20th overall is the Sherrill Arco #92 Corvette 454, driven by John Orr and Craig Carter.
    • Finishing 6th in category I and 21st overall is the Bandag #22 Corvette 460, driven by Denny Long and Bill Jobe.
    • In 8th place in category I and 23rd place overall, but not finishing the race, is the #90 Corvette 427, driven by Tom Rynone, Michael Wiernicki, and Neil Wiernicki.

  • 1994 - At the four-hour endurance GT Championship race at Vallelunga, Italy, a Callaway SuperNatural Corvette LM driven by Andreas Fuchs and Enrico Bertaggia finishes first in GT-2 class and second overall, behind a Ferrari F40.
  • 2004 - At Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Trans-Am in T.O. race is held, round five of the Motorock Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Derhaag Motorsports #40 Corvette, driven by Ron Fellows.
    • Finishing 7th is the #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.

  • 2016 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 15th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT Le Mans class and 17th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - 64 German airplanes fly for Britain. Five squadrons of RAF Fighter Command are launched to intercept them. Twelve German planes are shot down, at a cost of three British planes. This is considered the start of the Battle of Britain.
  • 1940 - US President Franklin Roosevelt asks Congress for US$4.8 billion for military spending.
  • 1940 - In the North Sea, off Great Yarmouth, England, German aircraft bomb and sink Canadian merchant ship Waterloo.
  • 1941 - At Jedwabne, Poland, hundreds of Jews are massacred by Poles.
  • 1941 - German forces launch an attack on Novgorod.
  • 1942 - The surviving seven ships (out of 33) from Convoy PQ-17 reach the Soviet port of Murmansk. Because of this disastrous convoy, the Murmansk run is temporarily suspended.
  • 1943 - (0134 hours) Transports carrying 1st Canadian Division release landing craft to the shore of Pachino, southwest of Italy. Target beaches are code-names Roger (on left), and Sugar.
  • 1943 - (0245 hours) Operation Husky begins, with an Allied invasion of Sicily. Four British divisions of the British 8th Army under General Sir Bernard Montgomery land on a 40-mile stretch on the southeast corner around Syracuse and Cape Passero. Four American divisions of the United States 7th Army under Lieutenant-General George Patton land on a 40-mile front to the west, around Scaglitti, Gela, and Licata.
  • 1943 - (0645 hours) Canadian forces report successful landings on Sicily.
  • 1944 - Operation Jupiter commences, as the Canadian 43rd Wessex Division begins an attack on Hill 112, 3km south of Carpiquet, France.
  • 1969 - The USSR issues a postage stamp marking the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Bulgaria.
  • 1993 - Marshall Islands issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Italy.
  • 1995 - Sierra Leone issues sixteen postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1988 - Bally Manufacturing agrees in principle to sell its coin-operated amusement game manufacturing business to Williams Industries for US$8 million.
  • 1992 - Hudson releases the Soldier Blade video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1996 - Sega releases the Sonic Championship video game to arcades in the US.
  • 1999 - Nintendo releases The New Tetris video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2000 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid The Trailer on DVD in Japan.
  • 2001 - Sony CEA releases the Gran Turismo 3: A-spec video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2003 - In the U.S., a federal judge blocks a Washington state law that would impose a US$500 fine on retailers who sell certain violent video games to children under age 17. The ruling states that the law would violate the constitutional 1st Amendment protecting free speech.
  • 2006 - 2K Games releases the Prey video game for the Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1630 - King Gustav Adolf and Bogislaw XIV of Pomerania sign a treaty of alliance.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2007 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases a circulating 25-cent coin depicting wheelchair curling, in association with the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. The design was created by Glen Green.

USA coin history:

  • 1873 - The Philadelphia Mint melts non-current silver coins on hand.

Sports history:

  • 1910 - Chicago's Comiskey Park opens, visiting Saint Louis Browns win 2-0 over Chicago White Sox.
  • 1914 - Boston Red Sox purchases Babe Ruth from the Baltimore Orioles.
  • 1929 - In game between Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, 9 home runs are hit, one in each inning.
  • 1932 - Jack Burnett gets 9 hits, Eddie Rommel relieves in second and continues to 18-17 victory in 18 as his Philadelphia Athletics beat Cleveland Indians in longest relief job.
  • 1934 - Carl Hubbell strikes out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx in the All-Star game.
  • 1934 - American League beats National League 9-7 in second All-Star Game (Polo Grounds, New York).
  • 1936 - Philadelphia Phillies' Chuck Klein becomes fourth to hit four home runs in a game.
  • 1947 - Cleveland Indians' Don Black no-hits Philadelphia Athletics, 3-0.
  • 1951 - National League beats American League 8-3 in 18th All Star Game (Briggs Stadium, Detroit, USA).
  • 1956 - National League beats American League 7-3 in 23rd All Star Game (Griffith Stad, Washington).
  • 1962 - National League beats American League 3-1 in 32nd All Star Game (DC Stadium, Washington).
  • 1969 - National League votes to split into two divisions.
  • 1982 - Miguel Vasquez makes first public quadruple somersault on trapeze.
  • 1990 - American League beats National League 2-0 in 61st All Star Game at Wrigley Field, Chicago.
  • 2007 - 2007 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in San Francisco, California (American League 5, National League 4).
  • 2016 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 2018 - Twelve boys and their football coach are successfully rescued from the flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Thailand, following a 17-day ordeal.
  • 2021 - (to August 1) The 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup is held in, and is won by, the United States.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats New York Yankees by score 11-6.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 6-5.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats San Diego Padres by score 12-0.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Colorado Rockies by score 3-2.

  • 1992 - In Miami, Florida, former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega is sentenced to 40 years in prison for drug and racketeering violations.
  • 1998 - The DNA-identified remains of United States Air Force 1st Lieutenant Michael Joseph Blassie arrive home to his family in St. Louis, Missouri, after being in the Tomb of the Unknowns since 1984.
  • 2001 - Sony CEA releases the Gran Turismo 3: A-spec game for the PlayStation 2 in the USA. Over one million copies are shipped in the first week.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Dennis strikes near Navarre Beach, Florida as a Category 3 storm, killing ten people after killing over 50 people in the Caribbean.
  • 2006 - Scuba divers begin recovering coins from the wreck of the SS New York sidewheel steamer, which sank off the Louisiana coast in 1846. Wholesale estimated value of the US gold coins alone is $1.5 million.
  • 2006 - Henry M. Paulson Junior is sworn into office as Treasury Secretary.
  • 2007 - A Cessna 310R twin-engine airplane crashes into two homes in Sanford, Florida, killing three adults and two children.
  • 2009 - General Motors emerges from bankruptcy protection after 40 days, with 60 percent ownership in the hands of the U.S. government.

Other history:

  • 1973 - Bahamas gain independence after 300 years of British rule.
  • 1985 - Coca-Cola Company announces it will resume selling old formula Coke.
  • 2003 - The last of the original Volkswagen Beetle cars is built at the assembly plant in Mexico. The car had been produced for 69 years. 21 million had been built.
