Personal computer history:

  • 1987 - Canon introduces the Cat computer, featuring 5-MHz 68000 processor, 9-inch monochrome screen, 3.5-inch 256 kB floppy disk drive, software in RAM (word processor, spreadsheet, telecommunications features), for US$1495.
  • 1997 - Hewlett-Packard announces the HP DeskJet 400L color ink jet printer. Black print resolution is 600-by-300 dots per inch, at three pages per minute.. Price is US$149, including a black ink cartridge.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1963 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Summer Magic to theaters. The film is based on the novel Mother Carey's Chickens by Kate Douglas Wiggins.
  • 1972 - Buena Vista premieres the live-action feature film Now You See Him, Now You Don't in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
  • 1976 - Buena Vista Distribution releases the Walt Disney Productions live-action feature film Gus is to theaters in the US. The film is based on the book by Ted Key.
  • 1984 - The Promenade Gifts shop opens in Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1984 - Restaurant Hokusai opens in World Bazaar at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1989 - Antigua & Barbuda issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters and French landmarks.
  • 1989 - Grenada Grenadines issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in Paris, France.
  • 1989 - The Grenadines of St. Vincent: Bequia issues eight postage stamps depicting Disney characters in French Revolution roles.
  • 1989 - The Grenadines of St. Vincent: Union Island issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters in French cars.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs the TV show Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain.
  • 1989 - The CBS TV network airs the pilot Adventures in Babysitting.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in Argentina and Peru.
  • 1996 - The American Journeys film ceases to be shown at Disneyland.
  • 1999 - The settlement of Jeffrey Katzenberg's lawsuit is announced. The settlement amount is not made public.
  • 2000 - The Disney Ambassador hotel opens in Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 2000 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Disney's The Kid to theaters in the US.
  • 2004 - Touchstone releases the live-action feature film King Arthur to theaters in the USA.
  • 2006 - Disney releases the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - At Beverly, Massachusetts, a 65-mile car race is held. Finishing 1st is the #111 Corvette driven by Richard Thompson.
  • 1958 - A federal law is passed, requiring automobile manufacturers to attach a label to the window of new cars displaying options and prices, transport and freight charges, and manufacturer's suggested retail price. The law will come into effect September 1.
  • 2001 - At Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Round 5? of the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in SGS class and 1st overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette Z06, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 4th in SGS class and 4th overall is the Powell Motorsport #? Corvette Z06, driven by Pete Tonelli and Rollie Stephenson.
    • Finishing 6th in SGS class and 32nd overall is the Mallet Cars / MTI Racing #98 Corvette, driven by Mike Weinberg and Stu Hayner.

  • 2002 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Road America 500 race is held, round four of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Oliver Gavin.

  • 2007 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway in Lakeville, Connecticut, the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix race is held, round six of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in LMGT1 class and 8th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 2nd in LMGT1 class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6.R driven by Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen.

  • 2019 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 7th in GT Le Mans class and 18th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen.
    • Finishing 8th in GT Le Mans class and 19th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Oliver Gavin and Marcel Fassler.

World War II history:

  • 1937 - In North China, Japanese soldiers provoke the Chinese near the Marco Polo Bridge, starting a war.
  • 1941 - Anthony Eden recommends to the War Cabinet that Britain increase the Malaya defences, send Australian troops to Dutch Timor and Ambon, and renounce the trade treaty with Japan.
  • 1941 - US forces land in Iceland to defend the mid-Atlantic base.
  • 1942 - Operation Rutter, an amphibious assault on Dieppe, is cancelled by General Bernard Montgomery, due to bad weather.
  • 1942 - In Canada, Bill 80 passes second reading in Parliament, giving government power to conscript soldiers for war duty overseas.
  • 1942 - Japanese forces invade New Guinea.
  • 1943 - German scientists give a presentation to Adolf Hitler of the A-4 rocket. Hitler is enthusiastic, instructing Albert Speer to ensure the scientists receive whatever labor and materials they need.
  • 1944 - (2230 hours) 467 British bombers drop 2561 tons of bombs on the area north of Caen, France.
  • 1944 - (2300 hours) In Normandy, France, British artillery fires on German-held villages around Caen in preparation for Operation Charnwood.
  • 1944 - (evening) 221 British bombers attack V-1 and V-2 rocket storage tunnels at St. Leu d'Esserent, France. They successfully block the tunnels. 31 planes are shot down by German night-fighters.
  • 1995 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Potsdam Conference.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Federal District Court Judge Fern Smith awards Lewis Galoob Toys US$15 million against Nintendo regarding the Game Genie Video Game Enhancer.
  • 2000 - Sony releases the PS One video game system in Japan, internally the same as the PlayStation, but in a smaller case, with external power supply, and slot for an optional clip-on screen. Price is 15,000 yen (about US$140).
  • 2001 - The animated film Pokémon: Celebi's Time Adventure is released in Japan.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1992 - The seventh 25c issue in the Canada 125 Coin Program is unveiled in Prince Edward Island. Nigel Roe created the design.

USA coin history:

  • 1911 - Frank Stewart offers to give the original Philadelphia Mint building to the city of Philadelphia.
  • 1975 - US Mint unveils 1776-1997-dated Bicentennial half dollar to public in Minneapolis.

Sports history:

  • 1923 - Cleveland Indians beat Boston Red Sox 27-3 with 13 runs in 6th inning.
  • 1924 - Robert LeGendre of the US sets long jump record at 25 feet 5.5 inches.
  • 1928 - Edward Hamm of the US sets long jump record at 25 feet 11 inches.
  • 1934 - Elizabeth Ryan wins her 12th Wimbeldon doubles championship.
  • 1936 - National League beats American League for their first All Star victory, 4-3 (Boston Braves Field).
  • 1937 - American League beats National League 8-3 in 5th All Star Game (Griffith Stad, Washington).
  • 1959 - National League beats American League 5-4 in 26th All Star Game (Pittsburgh' Forbes Field).
  • 1962 - Bill Hartack becomes 8th jockey to win 3,000 horse races.
  • 1964 - National League beats American League 7-4 at 35th All Star Game (Shea Stadium, New York).
  • 1972 - Billie Jean King beats Evonne Goolagong to win Wimbeldon tennis women's singles.
  • 1973 - First all-US women's Wimbeldon, Billie Jean King beats Chris Evert.
  • 1973 - All women board of directors takes control of ABA's Kentucky Colonels.
  • 1973 - Baltimore Orioles pull their fourth triple play (5-4-3 versus Oakland Athletics).
  • 1973 - Glenda Reiser (Canada) sets record women's mile (4:34.9).
  • 1974 - Federal Republic of Germany beats Netherlands 2-1 for soccer's 10th World Cup in Munich.
  • 1978 - Martina Navratilova captures Wimbledon defeating Chris Evert.
  • 1981 - Ben Plucknett of US throws discus 72.34m, but throw is disqualified.
  • 1982 - David Moorcroft of United Kingdom sets record for 5000m, 13:00.41.
  • 1982 - Steve Scott of US runs the mile in a record 3:47.69.
  • 1985 - Boris Becker becomes the youngest player ever (17) to win the men's singles tennis at Wimbledon. He is also the first German to win the title.
  • 1987 - New York Yankees trailing by 7 score 7 in 7th on 7/7 and 5 in 8th; beat Minnesota Twins 12-7.
  • 1990 - Greg Lemond wins his third Tour de France (90:43:20 average 23.3 mph).
  • 1990 - Martina Navratilova beats Zina Garrison for record 9th Wimbeldon title.
  • 1991 - Michael Stich beats Boris Becker for Wimbeldon championship.
  • 1999 - In Rome, Hicham El Guerrouj runs the fastest mile ever recorded - 3:43:13.
  • 2007 - (to July 29) The 2007 Tour de France begins, with the grand départ being from London.
  • 2007 - (to July 29) The Asian Cup 2007 Football (Soccer) tournament begins, taking place in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
  • 2007 - Venus Williams wins the Women's Singles, at Wimbledon for a fourth time.
  • 2019 - US team beats Dutch 2-0 to win FIFA women's football World Cup.
  • 2019 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 8-3.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Chicago Cubs by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats San Francisco Giants by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-3.

  • 1862 - First US Railway Post Office tested, sorting mail on train in motion.
  • 1863 - First military draft by US (exemptions cost $100).
  • 1865 - Four Abraham Lincoln assassination conspirators, including Mary Surratt, are hanged.
  • 1898 - US President William McKinley signs resolution of annexation of Hawaiian Islands.
  • 1905 - 127 degrees F (53 degrees C), Parker, Arizona (state record high).
  • 1920 - A radio compass device is used for the first time on a U.S. Navy airplane near Norfolk, Virginia.
  • 1923 - University of Delaware invents the "junior year abroad" (at Sorbonne).
  • 1930 - Construction of the Boulder Dam begins, in Boulder Canyon, Colorado.
  • 1941 - US forces land in Iceland to defend the mid-Atlantic base.
  • 1946 - Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini canonized as first American saint.
  • 1947 - In New Mexico, USA, a secret operation is begun to recover wreckage of disc-shaped craft from crash site 75 miles north-west of Roswell Army Air Base, and four small human-like beings found dead 2 miles east of the crash site.
  • 1952 - The SS United States ocean liner arrives in Cornwall, England, from New York Harbor, completing its trans-Atlantic crossing in 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes, setting the record for crossing the Atlantic.
  • 1956 - Seven Army trucks loaded with dynamite explode in the middle of California, killing 1,100-1,200, destroying 2,000 buildings.
  • 1960 - USSR shoots down a US aircraft over Barents sea.
  • 1975 - Juneau, Alaska, reaches a record high temperature: 90 degrees F.
  • 1983 - Eleven-year-old Samantha Smith of Manchester, Maine, leaves for USSR, on invitation of Soviet leader.
  • 1984 - Five die in a train crash in Williston, Vermont.
  • 1986 - US Supreme Court strikes down Gramm-Rudman deficit-reduction law.
  • 1987 - Kiwanis Clubs end men-only tradition, vote to admit women.
  • 2016 - US Army veteran Micah Johnson shoots dead five police officers in Dallas, Texas.
