Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - James Towne begins work as first president of Microsoft.
  • 1989 - Apple Computer announces it will sell its 16.4% stake of Adobe Systems.
  • 1992 - The Win32 Professional Developers Conference is held, in San Francisco, California. Microsoft first makes public mention of work on "Chicago", the next version of Windows. Microsoft also gives out over 4500 copies of Win32 SDK and pre-release versions of Windows NT for Intel 386/486 processors and for MIPS R4000 processors.
  • 1995 - IBM completes its US$3.5 billion acquisition of Lotus Development, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Walt and Roy Disney put a US$400 deposit on a lot at 2719 Hyperion Avenue, in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles, where they plan to build a new studio.
  • 1940 - Walt Disney shows a reel of Bambi to Bank of America executives.
  • 1982 - Disney previews the film Tron for film critics.
  • 1984 - A presentation about how the Gibson Greetings deal was good for Disney is given to Sid Bass and Roy Disney's Brain Trust. However, they remain unconvinced that it is a good buy, claiming Disney is paying twice its value.
  • 1993 - At the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Disney's Symphonic Fantasy opens, performing for two weeks, featuring the American Symphony Orchestra with Disney characters and music.
  • 1994 - The Captain EO film ceases playing at Journey into Imagination at Epcot.
  • 2004 - Disney Interactive releases the Kim Possible 2: Drakken's Demise video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - At the Watkins Glen race course, Race #5 is held for B-Production and C-Production classes.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class, 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Dean McCarthy.
    • Finishing 2nd in B-Production class, 3rd overall is the Corvette driven by Homer Deasey.
    • Finishing 3rd in B-Production class is the Corvette driven by Don Yenko.

  • 1980 - At the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit in Watkins Glen, New York, the Watkins Glen Six Hour / CRC Chemicals Trans-Am Championship - Round 3 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in Trans-Am class and 15th overall is the Aquilante-Wolpert #11 1967 Corvette roadster, driven by Thomas Aquilante, David Wolpert, and Wade White.
    • Finishing 4th in Trans-Am class and 17th overall is the Keirn Garage #81 Corvette, driven by Philip Keirn, Ed Enington, and Dennis Cubby.
    • In 6th place in Trans-Am class and 20th place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Forrest-Leifheit #83 Corvette, driven by Herb Forrest and Craig Leifheit.
    • Finishing 7th in Trans-Am class and 21st overall is the Little Foreign Car Shop #93 Corvette roadster, driven by Michael Oleyar and Bill Craine.
    • Finishing 8th in Trans-Am class and 22nd overall is the Rynone Industries #18 Corvette, driven by David Kicak and Tom Eastham.
    • Finishing 10th in Trans-Am class and 25th overall is the Auto Barn #64 Corvette, driven by Robert Baechle and David Laughlin.
    • In 14th place in Trans-Am class and 31st place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Buist/Syfert #46 Corvette, driven by Jack Broomall and Catherine Kizer.
    • In 16th place in Trans-Am class and 35th place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Atlas Van Lines #60 Corvette, driven by John Brandt.

  • 2002 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Road America 500 race is held, round five of the Speed World Challenge GT Series.
    • Finishing 5th is the #73 Corvette Z06, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 8th is the #35 Corvette Z06, driven by David Farmer.
    • Finishing 15th is the #11 Corvette, driven by Craig Gelston.
    • Finishing 16th is the #34 Corvette, driven by Tony Gaples.

World War II history:

  • 1942 - In Russia, Voronezh falls to German forces.
  • 1943 - In the Indian Ocean, east of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, German submarine U-177 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship Jasper Park.
  • 1944 - German Colonel Count Klaus von Stauffenberg carries a bomb in a briefcase to a conference with Adolf Hitler, but does not detonate it due to lack of other important Nazi leaders.
  • 1944 - British air forces drop a 12,000-pound "Tallboy" bomb on the Watten rocket launch site.
  • 1944 - (evening) In the English Channel, Canadian destroyers HMCS Ottawa and Kootenay sink German submarine U-678.
  • 1976 - The USSR issues a postage stamp honoring Ljudmilla Mikhajlovna Pavlichenko, heroine of the war.
  • 1995 - Ghana issues 16 postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Guyana issues 16 postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Maldives issues 16 postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Uganda issues 16 postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1931 - The Canadian Secretary of State for External Affairs sends a letter to the British Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, proposing that the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint be called "The Royal Canadian Mint" when it is transferred to Canadian control.

USA coin history:

  • 1785 - The dollar (and decimal coinage) is unanimously chosen by the Continental Congress as the monetary unit for the United States. The US is the first nation to adopt decimal system of currency. The silver dollar coin is to contain 375.64 grains of silver.
  • 1977 - US Mint technicians declare 1977/6 cents to be fakes, reversing their earlier opinion.

Sports history:

  • 1912 - Opening ceremonies of Olympic games in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • 1912 - Donald Lippincott runs the 100m race in a world record 10.6 seconds.
  • 1920 - New York Yankees score team record 14 runs in one inning versus Washington Senators.
  • 1929 - Saint Louis has two 10-run innings and beats Philadelphia Phillies 28-6.
  • 1933 - First All-Star baseball game, American League wins 5-2 (Chicago's Comiskey Park).
  • 1935 - Helen Wills Moody wins her 7th Wimbeldon championship.
  • 1938 - National League beats American League 4-1 in 6th All Star Game (Crosley Field, Cincinnati, Ohio).
  • 1941 - New York Yankees unveil a monument to Lou Gehrig in centerfield.
  • 1942 - American League beats National League 3-1 in 10th All Star Game (New York Giants host).
  • 1945 - Washington Senators' Rick Ferrell catches for a record 1,722 games.
  • 1962 - Mickey Mantle hits his third and fourth consecutive homers.
  • 1983 - Fred Lynn of California Angels hits All-Star game first grand slam (American League wins 13-3).
  • 2000 - The American Sportscasters Association vote Vin Scully the Number 1 sportscaster of the 20th century.
  • 2005 - The International Olympic Committee awards the 2012 Summer Olympics to London.
  • 2008 - Rafael Nadal beats Roger Federer 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (8-10) 9-7 in men's singles tennis to win his first Wimbledon title.
  • 2022 - Opening game of 2022 European Women's Football Championship. England beats Austria by score 1-0.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Colorado Rockies by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 7-5.
  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Houston Astros by score 7-4.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Tampa Bay Rays beats Boston Red Sox by score 7-1.

  • 1928 - World's largest hailstones 1.5 pounds (17 inch diameter) fall in Potter, Nebraska, USA.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Declaration of Independence announced on front page of the Pennsylvania Evening Gazette.
  • 1777 - British General Burgoyne captures Fort Ticonderoga from Americans.
  • 1785 - The dollar (and decimal coinage) is unanimously chosen by the Continental Congress as the monetary unit for the United States. The US is the first nation to adopt a decimal money system.
  • 1835 - In Vicksburg, Mississippi, local militia hangs five gamblers following months of trouble, culminating in the murder of a doctor and armed resistance to the law.
  • 1854 - First US Republican state convention, in Ripon, Wisconsin.
  • 1869 - Black candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia, Dr J H Harris, is defeated.
  • 1886 - Horlick's of Wisconsin offers first malted milk to public.
  • 1892 - Striking steelworkers in Homestead, Pennsylvania, USA fire on scabs, killing 7.
  • 1894 - Cleveland sends 2,000 troops to Chicago to suppress Pullman strike.
  • 1919 - The British dirigible R34 land in New York, completing the first crossing of the Atlantic by an airship (108 hours).
  • 1924 - Inventor and radio pioneer William Stevenson sends the first photo across the Atlantic by radio, from New York to England.
  • 1928 - First all-talking motion picture shown, in New York (Lights of New York).

  • 1960 - Dr Barbara Moore completes a 3,207-mile walk from Los Angeles to New York City.
  • 1971 - White House Plumbers unit formed to plug news leaks.
  • 1983 - US Supreme Court rules retirement plans can't pay women less than men.
  • 1984 - Warner Communications sells off the home video game and computer systems business of Atari to Jack Tramiel for US$240 million in long-term loans. Warner has the option to purchase up to 32 percent interest in the new company for US$2 per share.
  • 1989 - After nine years, WHOT (Brooklyn pirate radio station) is busted by the US Federal Communications Commission.
  • 1994 - Fourteen firefighters die in the South Canyon wildfire on Storm King Mountain in Colorado.
  • 1995 - IBM completes its US$3.5 billion acquisition of Lotus Development, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary.
  • 2000 - A barge and a tug towing it collide off Middletown, Rhode Island, USA, spilling 53,000 litres of oil in Narragansett Bay.
