  • 1989 - Fujitsu buys 38% of Poqet Computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1972 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Napoleon and Samantha to theaters. This film is Jodie Foster's feature film debut, at age 10.
  • 1978 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Hot Lead and Cold Feet to theaters.
  • 1988 - The Maelstrom boat ride opens in the Norway pavilion in World Showcase in EPCOT Center.
  • 1989 - Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 70-millionth guest.
  • 1989 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of the Disney TV show Hard Times on Planet Earth.
  • 1990 - The CBS TV network airs the pilot TV show Bar Girls.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the film Rachel and Marla for educational use.
  • 1990 - The CBS TV network airs the Disney pilot Bar Girls.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1959 - At Meadowdale, Illinois, a USAC professional series race is held.
    • Finishing 9th overall is the Corvette driven by John Reimer.
    • The Sting Ray is raced but crashes and does not finish.

  • 2002 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, Round 6 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in AGT class and 11th overall is the LG Motorsports #25 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 2nd in AGT class and 12th overall is the Morgan Dollar Motorsports #46 Corvette, driven by Rob Morgan.
    • Finishing 4th in AGT class and 14th overall is the Xtreme Racing Group #60 Corvette, driven by Anthony Puleo and Marty Schuster.
    • Finishing 5th in AGT class and 16th overall is the Diman Racing Systems #23 Corvette, driven by Armando Gonzalez, Axel Rivera, and Tony Ave.
    • Finishing 6th in AGT class and 18th overall is the Flis Motorsports #90 Corvette, driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Craig Conway.
    • In 7th place in AGT class and 21st overall, but not finishing the race, is the ACP Motorsports #19 Corvette, driven by Kerry Hitt and Owen Trinkler.

  • 2004 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway in Lakeville, Connecticut, the New England Grand Prix race is held, round three of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 4th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

  • 2007 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona race is held, round nine of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 13th in GT class and 29th overall is the Stevenson Automotive #57 Corvette driven by Dominic Cicero and Marc Bunting.
    • Finishing 17th in GT class and 34th overall is the Team Sahlen #42 Corvette driven by Joe Sahlen and Will Nonnamaker.
    • Finishing 18th in GT class and 35th overall is the Team Sahlen #43 Corvette driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Wayne Nonnamaker.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The Japanese army retreats from its Soviet conflict with heavy losses.
  • 1940 - Near the south-west coast of Ireland, a submarine torpedoes and shells Canadian merchant ship Magog. The crew abandons ship.
  • 1942 - German battleship Tirpitz and accompanying ships leave Alten Fjord, in northern Norway, to attack convoy PQ-17. After a short time, it is learned that the convoy's escort ships left, so Tirpitz heads back, leaving the convoy's destruction for the submarines and the Luftwaffe.
  • 1942 - During the day, 14 freighters out of 33 in convoy PQ-17 to Murmansk are sunk. Only nine ships reach Soviet ports.
  • 1942 - USS Growler submarine attacks three Japanese destroyers off Kiska, Alaska, sinking one, damaging the other two.
  • 1943 - German Central Army Group and Southern Army Group, about 900,000 troops, begin Operation Citadel, an attack around the Kursk salient in the Ukraine. Size of the opposing forces at the start of the battle: German: 900,000 men, 10,000 cannons, 2000 aircraft, 2000 tanks; Soviet: 1.9 million men, 20,800 cannons, 2000 aircraft, 5100 tanks.
  • 1943 - (1545 hours) A German submarine torpedoes Canadian Motor Vessel Devis, near Algiers. It sinks 20 minutes later, with the loss of 52 lives.
  • 1944 - Canadian Chiefs of Staff recommend that scorched earth plans for Canada be cancelled.
  • 1945 - American General MacArthur announces the liberation of the Philippines.
  • 1945 - Great Britain and the US recognize the Provisional Government of National Unity as the government of Poland.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the German destruction of naval Convoy PQ-17 from Iceland to Russia.
  • 1993 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk.

Video game history:

  • 1991 - In San Francisco, California, US District Court Judge Fern Smith rules in favor of Lewis Galoob Toys over Nintendo, allowing the manufacture and sale of the Game Genie. Nintendo maintains that the product does infringe its copyrights, and plans to appeal the decision.
  • 1996 - Sega releases the NiGHTS Into Dreams video game for the Sega Saturn in Japan.
  • 2005 - Majesco releases the Psychonauts video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Microsoft releases the Halo 2: Multiplayer Map Pack for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2006 - Electronic Arts releases the The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II video game for the Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1709 - King Karl XII and group reach the domain of the Ottoman Turks, and seek permission to enter the Empire. While waiting, Russian followers catch up. Half of the Swedes make it across the Bug River, with the others lost in the river or captured by Russians.

USA coin history:

  • 1979 - US Mint Director Stella Hackel announces plans to add "P" mint mark for Philadelphia Mint on all coins except cent, and use no mint marks for any cents in 1980.

Sports history:

  • 1905 - New York Giants' 18-game win streak ends as Philadelphia Phillies win in 10th inning.
  • 1969 - Rod Laver wins his fourth Wimbeldon championship.
  • 1975 - Arthur Ashe wins men's single championship at Wimbeldon.
  • 1983 - New Jersey Devils purchase AHL Maine Mariners as their farm team.
  • 1986 - (to July 20) Goodwill Games are held in Moscow.
  • 1987 - Australian Pat Cash wins Wimbledon, upsets #1 seed Ivan Lendl.
  • 1989 - Barry Bonds' home run sets father-son (with Bobby) home run record at 408.
  • 1989 - Mark McGwire gets 100th home run, second fastest (1400 at bats) (to Kiner).
  • 1990 - Zina Garrison upsets Steffi Graf in Wimbeldon semi-finals.
  • 1991 - In a unanimous vote, final approval is given by baseball owners for the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins to join the National League in 1993.
  • 2004 - Pitcher Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sets a new record streak of 84 consecutive saves, as he gives up a win on his 85th game.
  • 2005 - Boston Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez hits his 20th career grand slam, the second-most in major league history.
  • 2008 - Venus Williams beats her sister Serena 7-5 6-4, capturing her fifth Wimbledon tennis title.
  • 2008 - Daniel Nestor of Canada and teammate Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia win the Wimbeldon doubles tennis match, defeating Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
  • 2009 - Roger Federer defeats Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon men's tennis final, winning a five-set match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14 for a record 15th Grand Slam championship.
  • 2009 - In Porto, Portugal, round 7 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Gabriele Tarquini; race 2 is won by Augusto Farfus.
  • 2009 - In Laguna Seca, USA, round 8 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Dani Pedrosa.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Colorado Rockies by score 5-2.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats San Francisco Giants by score 6-2.
  • 2022 - At Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Minnesota Twins beats Chicago White Sox by score 8-2.

  • 1861 - Engagement at Carthage, Missouri, USA.
  • 1865 - William P. Wood is sworn in as first US Secret Service chief.
  • 1891 - Hail kills six horses in Rapid City, South Dakota.
  • 1935 - US President Franklin Roosevelt signs the National Labor Relations Act.
  • 1936 - 120 degrees F (49 degrees C), Gannvalley, South Dakota (state record hot).
  • 1937 - 117 degrees F (47 degrees C), Medicine Lake, Montana (state record).
  • 1942 - USS Growler submarine attacks three Japanese destroyers off Kiska, Alaska, sinking one, damaging the other two.
  • 1945 - American General Douglas MacArthur announces the liberation of the Philippines.
  • 1950 - American and Korth Korean troops battle near Osar. Private Kenneth Shadrick of West Virginia becomes first US fatality in Korean War.

  • 1966 - National Guard mobilizes in Omaha, Nebraska after third night of rioting.
  • 1966 - Saturn I rocket launched at Cape Kennedy.
  • 1971 - US 26th amendment certified (reduces voting age to 18).
  • 1973 - The MGM Grand Hotel opens in Las Vegas, built at a cost of US$107 million. It features 2100 rooms, Jai-alai fronton, and 1200-seat showroom.
  • 1983 - Woman gives birth to baby 84 days after brain death (Roanoke, Virginia).
  • 1983 - Angela M. Buchanan's term as Treasurer of the US ends.
  • 1984 - US Supreme Court weakens 70-year-old "exclusionary rule"-evidence seized.
  • 1986 - The newly recognized sovereign tribe Mashantucket Pequot open a US$4 million bingo hall on tribal land in Connecticut, USA. Construction was funded by a loan from the United Arab-American Bank.
  • 1986 - First Lady Nancy Reagan cuts red, white and blue ribbon; reopens Statue of Liberty to the public following an extensive refurbishing.
  • 1995 - The U.S. Congress passes the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act, requiring that producers of pornography keep records of all models who are filmed or photographed. This act also requires that all models be at least 18 years of age.
  • 1999 - U.S. Army Pfc. Barry Winchell is bludgeoned in his sleep at Fort Campbell, Kentucky by fellow soldiers; he dies the next day from his injuries.

Other history:

  • 1962 - Algeria gains independence after 132 years of French rule.
  • 2006 - North Korea test fires missiles, timed with the liftoff of Space Shuttle Discovery, preceding the fireworks celebrations that night in America. The long range Taepodong-2 reportedly fails shortly after takeoff.
