Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - The Criterion Theatre in Los Angeles premieres the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Trolley Troubles.
  • 1936 - David Hilberman begins work at the Disney studio.
  • 1949 - Filming begins in England on Treasure Island.
  • 1955 - A pre-opening party is held at the Disneyland site for employees.
  • 1956 - The Indian War Canoes attraction begins operation in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1962 - The Indian Trading Post shop opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1975 - Buena Vista Distribution releases the Walt Disney Productions live-action feature film The Apple Dumpling Gang to theaters in the US. The film is based on a book by Jack M. Bickham.
  • 1979 - The first baby is born at Disneyland, Teresa Salcedo, born to Rosa and Elias Salcedo of Los Angeles.
  • 1984 - The World Premiere Circle-Vision theater opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland, sponsored by PSA. Previous name of the theater was Circle-Vision 360. The pre-show attraction film is All Because Man Wanted to Fly, with main film being American Journeys.
  • 1986 - In Disneyland, the Country Bear Jamboree is renamed Country Bear Playhouse.
  • 1987 - The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction opens in Westernland at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1991 - The CBS TV network airs the two-hour TV special Disney's Great American Celebration.
  • 1992 - The CBS TV network airs the show Celebrate the Spirit! Disney's All-Star 4th of July Spectacular.
  • 1994 - The Les Mystères du Nautilus attraction opens in Discoveryland at Euro Disneyland.
  • 1998 - In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mickey's Hometown Parade is performed. A resident of the city was the first-prize winner in an essay contest.
  • 1999 - David Geffen (of DreamWorks SKG) and Stanley Gold (on Disney board of directors) negotiate a settlement for the breach-of-contract lawsuit filed by Jeffrey Katzenberg against Disney. Katzenberg is paid an undisclosed amount (US$280 million) for a two percent bonus in perpetuity from all film and TV shows produced or acquired while he was at Disney.
  • 1999 - The Bear in the Big Blue House Show begins performances in Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World.
  • 2001 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. The Master Control Program from the film Tron is used to represent a computer interface.
  • 2006 - The show Encore! closes at the Broadway Music Theater in Tokyo DisneySea.
  • 2014 - The Alice In Wonderland ride in Fantasyland at Disneyland re-opens with new special effects and other enhancements.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - The British Air Ministry directs Bomber Command to focus attacks on German shipping and warships.
  • 1940 - A French Court Martial sentences Charles de Gaulle in absentia to four years in prison for treason.
  • 1941 - (daytime) Twelve British Blenheim bombers attack Bremen, bombing an aircraft factory and a minesweeper. Four planes are shot down.
  • 1942 - In North Africa, British General Claude Auchinleck counterattacks German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's forces outside El Alamein. The Axis defence holds.
  • 1942 - (about 2200 hours) First Sea Lord Dudley Pound orders the British aircraft carrier Victorious, plus battleships and cruisers to abandon Arctic convoy PQ-17 of 33 ships headed for the Soviet port of Murmansk. Six remaining destroyer escorts also leave the slow-moving freighter convoy. The merchant ships are instructed to disperse and proceed to Soviet ports. This was done for fear of the German battleship Tirpitz attacking the convoy.
  • 1943 - General Wladyslaw Sikorski, head of Poland's government in exile, is killed in a plane crash off Gibraltar. New Premier is Mikolajczyk.
  • 1943 - Three ships of a convoy of Canadian supply ships en route to the Sicily operation are torpedoed and sunk, with the loss of 58 men, 500 vehicles, and 40 guns.
  • 1943 - The American Forces Network radio program begins airing from England.
  • 1944 - (0500 hours) In France, Operation Windsor begins, with Canadian 3rd Infantry Division beginning an attack on Carpiquet village and airport, west of Caen. Allied field guns and naval cannon begin a bombardment of the airfield.
  • 1944 - J. Lawton Collins leads the US 7th Corps in a drive down the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, but fails.
  • 1944 - The Blitzmaedel (German Women's Army Corps) evacuates the Hotel Moderne in Paris, France.
  • 1945 - An Anglo-American agreement is signed, to use an atomic bomb on Japan.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the fall of Sevastopol.
  • 1994 - Ghana issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
  • 2012 - Marshall Islands issues ten postage stamps commemorating the 70th anniversary events of World War II in 1942.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1851 - The British Treasury replies to Francis Hincks' May 14 letter, again stating that regulation of currency is the responsibility of the Crown.
  • 1952 - The Currency, Mint and Exchange Fund Act allows gold coins of $5, $10, and $20 to be minted.

USA coin history:

  • 1829 - US President Andrew Jackson lays the cornerstone for the second Mint building at the corner of Chestnut and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1864 - Congress passes an act to build a mint at Dalles City, Oregon.
  • 1926 - The US Mint begins ceremonial strikings of the American Independence Sesquicentennial commemorative coins.

Sports history:

  • 1905 - Philadelphia Athletics beat Boston Red Sox 4-2 in 20-inning game.
  • 1908 - New York Giants' pitcher George "Hooks" Witse no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 1-0 in 10 innings.
  • 1910 - Reno, Nevada, hosts boxing match between black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson and white challenger Jim Jeffries. Johnson knocks out Jeffries in the 15th round.
  • 1911 - Ty Cobb goes 0 for 4 and ends a 40 game hit streak.
  • 1912 - Detroit Tigers' pitcher George Mullen no-hits Saint Louis Browns, 7-0.
  • 1914 - First US motorcycle race (300 miles, Dodge City, Kansas).
  • 1919 - Jack Dempsey beats Jess Willard in 4th round in Cuba for heavyweight boxing championship.
  • 1925 - New York Yankees' Lefty Grove beats Philadelphia Athletics' Herb Pennock 1-0 in 15 innings.
  • 1938 - First game at Shribe Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Boston Braves beat Philadelphia Phillies 10-5.

  • 1984 - Richard Petty wins his 200th career NASCAR victory at the Firecracker 400 in Daytona, Florida.
  • 1984 - Yuri Sedykh of USSR throws hammer a record 86.33 metres.
  • 1985 - In a 19-inning game (6 hours 10 minutes), which goes until just before 4:00 AM the next day, the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves, 16-13.
  • 1987 - Martina Navratilova wins 6th straight Wimbeldon, defeating Steffi Graf.
  • 1988 - Steffan Edberg beats Boris Becker for Wimbeldon crown.
  • 2004 - Greece beats Portugal 1-0 to win the Euro 2004.
  • 2007 - Sochi is elected as the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics, during the 119th International Olympic Committee Session in Guatemala City.
  • 2008 - At the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Nebraska, American swimmer Michael Phelps sets a world record in the 200-metre individual medley at 1:54.8.
  • 2009 - Serena Williams defeats sister Venus at Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 giving her a third Wimbledon title.
  • 2010 - Big Red Mike wins the 151st running of the Queen's Plate in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The race winner receives a gold cup and 50 gold sovereigns, as well as 60 per cent of the total purse of $1 million.
  • 2010 - Rafael Nadal wins his second Wimbledon men's tennis title and his eighth career Grand Slam singles title, defeating Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
  • 2010 - Liam Broady and Tom Farquharson beat Lewis Burton and George Morgan 7-6, (7-4), 6-4 in the all-British mens' doubles final at Wimbledon.
  • 2020 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida, USA, the IMSA WeatherTech 240 at Daytona race is held, round 2 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 1997 - NASA's Pathfinder space probe lands on the surface of Mars.
  • 2005 - NASA's "Copper bullet" from Deep Impact spacecraft hits Comet Tempel 1, creating a crater for scientific studies.
  • 2006 - Space Shuttle Discovery is launched to the International Space Station. It returns safely on July 17.
  • 2016 - NASA's Juno spacecraft enters orbit around Jupiter and begins a 20-month survey of the planet.

  • 1956 - US most intense rainfall (1.23 inches in one minute) at Unionville, Maryland.

USA history:

  • 1776 - In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and its king. Twelve colonies adopt the declaration.
  • 1789 - First US tariff act.
  • 1802 - US Military Academy officially opens (West Point, New York).
  • 1817 - Construction on Erie Canal begins with ground-breaking in Utica, New York, USA. The canal will run 350 miles between Buffalo and Albany.
  • 1827 - Slavery is abolished in New York.
  • 1828 - Construction begins on B and O (Baltimore-Ohio), first US passenger railroad.
  • 1829 - The cornerstone is laid by US President Andrew Jackson for the Mint building at the corner of Chestnut and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1832 - Song "America" is first sung publicly.
  • 1840 - President Martin Van Buren signs into law the Independent Treasury Act, allowing the federal government to control its own money.
  • 1845 - Texas Congress votes for annexation to US.
  • 1848 - In Washington, D.C., construction begins on a 24,500-pound block of white marble monument to President George Washington.
  • 1861 - US President Abraham Lincoln asks Congress for $400 million and 400,000 men to suppress the Southern insurrection.
  • 1863 - Boise, Idaho is founded (later becomes capital of Idaho).
  • 1863 - USA Major General Ulysses S. Grant captures Vicksburg, Mississippi.
