Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Tramel Technology Ltd., headed by Jack Tramiel, buys a controlling interest in the Atari home computer and video game division from Warner Communications, for US$240 million in long-term notes. Warner retains Atari's coin-operated game division and home communications venture Ataritel.
  • 1991 - Apple Computer and IBM sign a technology sharing agreement, to integrate the Mac into IBM's enterprise systems, to allow future RISC-based Macs to use IBM's Power PC chip, to work together on common multimedia standards, and to co-operatively produce a new object-oriented operating system.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer halts production of its Power Mac G4 Cube, due to slow sales.
  • 2003 - In Oakland, California, a pre-trial hearing is held in a patent dispute case of InterTrust versus Microsoft. The judge rules against Microsoft on all 33 disputed issues. InterTrust claims patent infringement of digital security technology in Windows XP, Office XP Suite, Windows Media Player, Xbox, .NET platform, and more.
  • 2006 - Trinidad and Tobago issues a postage stamp depicting a personal computer keyboard.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - The Pluto film The Sleepwalker is released to theaters.
  • 1957 - Disney releases the ninth People and Places film, Lapland, to theaters.
  • 1957 - Disney releases the live-action short film Alaskan Sled Dog to theaters.
  • 1988 - The TV special Walt Disney World 4th of July Spectacular airs.
  • 1989 - Disney releases the film The Writing Process: A Conversation with Mavis Jukes for educational use.
  • 1993 - The NBC TV network airs the last episode of Almost Home.
  • 1996 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Phenomenon to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network airs the last show of the series Vital Signs.
  • 1998 - Innoventions opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1998 - The Lifetime TV network airs the last episode of the Debt TV show.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Six Days, Seven Nights to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2001 - Disney's Electrical Parade begins nightly performances at Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2008 - New Mark VII Monorail Red engine at Disneyland begins transporting guests.
  • 2009 - The Hall of Presidents officially re-opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, with new speeches by Barack Obama and George Washington.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1952 - General Motors and Chevrolet management teams initiate work orders for two Motorama fiberglass bodies of the sports car, one test body, and two full-size passenger cars for development and testing of the sports car drivetrain.
  • 1984 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida, the Paul Revere 250 / SCCA Budweiser Trans-Am Championship - Round 6 race is held.
    • Finishing 6th is the DeAtley Budweiser #3 Corvette, driven by Darin Brassfield.
    • Finishing 12th is the #95 Corvette, driven by Phil Currin.
    • Finishing 14th is the #38 Corvette, driven by Ricardo Londono.
    • Finishing 18th is the Kings Inn of Daytona #21 Corvette, driven by Gary Baker.

  • 2003 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Paul Revere 250 race is held, round eight of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 5th in GTS class and 11th overall is the Silverstone Racing Services #39 Corvette, driven by Larry Huang and Chris Hall.

  • 2016 - At the Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, USA, the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen race is held, round 6 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 14th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 7th in GT Le Mans class and 17th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.

  • 2022 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the 2:40 hour SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 8 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series. Finishing 2nd in GTD Pro class and 12th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C8.R driven by Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The Japanese army launches a powerful surprise attack against Soviet forces at Bain-Tsagan Mountain.
  • 1940 - British troops seize French ships in British harbors.
  • 1940 - A British naval group arrives at Oran and Mers-el-Kebir in Algeria, requesting the surrender of the French fleet. The French refuse, and the British ships open fire. Battleship Bretagne blows up, Dunquerque is run aground, battleship Provence is beached, and torpedo cruiser Magador explodes. 1300 French sailors die.
  • 1941 - Soviet Prime Minister Josef Stalin tells the Soviet people to "scorch the earth" in their retreat from advancing German forces.
  • 1942 - In North Africa, Axis forces attack the defensive line before El Alamein, but halt again by strong British fire.
  • 1942 - Off Georges' Bank, Nova Scotia, Canada, British warship HMS Le Tigre sinks German submarine U-215.
  • 1943 - (evening) 653 British bombers attack Cologne, Germany. 72,000 people are made homeless.
  • 1944 - Troy Middleton leads the US 8th Corps in a drive down the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, but fails.
  • 1969 - The USSR issues a postage stamp marking the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Byelorussia.
  • 1984 - The USSR issues a postage stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Byelorussia.
  • 1990 - Grenada issues two postage stamps marking the 25th anniversary of the US Airborne divisions.
  • 1990 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Mers-el Kebir.
  • 1994 - Belarus issues three postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Soviet areas.

Video game history:

  • 1999 - In Weirs Beach, New Hampshire, over six hours Billy Mitchell plays a "perfect" game of the arcade game Pac-Man, achieving the highest score that the game allows: 3,333,360. This can only be accomplished by guiding Pac-Man to eat every dot, fruit, and ghost in all 256 levels without dying.

Swedish history:

  • 1542 - King Gustav issues a royal letter to the commons of Kalmar County, calling Dacke's people "forest thieves".

Canadian coin history:

  • 1976 - Publisher Offset Make-Up releases the first issue of Canadian Coin News newspaper, formerly called Coin, Stamp, Antique News.

USA coin history:

  • 1852 - US Congress authorizes branch mint in San Francisco, California.
  • 1891 - Compiled results of a public design competition for the 10-cent piece are delivered to the Treasury Secretary. None of the submitted designs is considered suitable.
  • 1925 - The US Mint begins sales of the Stone Mountain Memorial half dollar coins.
  • 1975 - The US Mint ceases production of 25-cent, 50-cent, and $1 coins dated 1974.

Sports history:

  • 1888 - New York Giants' pitcher Rube Marquard ties record of 19 game win-streak.
  • 1911 - Ty Cobb hits in his 40th straight game.

  • 1932 - First Sunday game at Fenway Park, New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 13-2.
  • 1939 - Lou Gehrig day; baseball player Gehrig makes "luckiest man" speech.

  • 1965 - Philadelphia Phillies' Dick Allen and Frank Thomas get into a fight during practice.
  • 1966 - Atlanta Braves' pitcher Tony Cloninger is first National League player to hit two grand slams in a game.
  • 1968 - Cleveland Indians' Luis Tiant strikes out 19 Minnesota Twins players.
  • 1970 - California Angels' Clyde Wright no-hits Oakland Athletics, 8-0.
  • 1973 - Brothers Jim and Gaylord Perry face each other for only time, Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland Indians 5-4, as Gaylord loses.
  • 1982 - Martina Navratilova defeats Chris Evert Lloyd at Wimbeldon.
  • 1983 - Calvin Smith of US becomes fastest man alive (9.93 seconds for 100 metre dash).
  • 1983 - John McEnroe regains men's singles title at Wimbledon.
  • 1989 - Peter Koech of Kenya sets 3k steeplechase record (8:05.39) in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • 2008 - The NBA's Seattle SuperSonics basketball team announces they will move to Oklahoma City next season.
  • 2009 - Brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin re-sign with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks for five-year deals worth US$30.5 million each.
  • 2010 - Spain beats Paraguay with a lone goal in the quarter-finals of soccer's 2010 World Cup, to advance to the semi-finals for the first time.
  • 2010 - American Serena Williams defeats Russian 21st seed Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2, to win a fourth women's singles tennis Wimbledon and 13th Grand Slam title.

USA history:

  • 1775 - George Washington takes command of the Continental Army as commander-in-chief at Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • 1778 - British forces massacre 360 men, women and children in Wyoming, Pennsylvania.
  • 1814 - Americans capture Fort Erie, Canada.
  • 1839 - First state normal school in US opens, Lexington, Massachusetts, with three students.
  • 1852 - US Congress authorizes America's second mint, in San Francisco, California.
  • 1863 - On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate General George Pickett leads a 15,000-man column a mile toward USA positions at Cemetery Ridge, after an hour-long cannon bombardment. But USA artillery and infantry survive, and devastate the attacking force, killing or wounding 7,000 within an hour.
  • 1884 - The Customer's Afternoon Letter first publishes Charles Dow's American stock average, containing eleven railroad and industrial stocks: Chicago & North Western, Delaware Lackawanna & Western, Lake Shore, Louisville & Nashville, Missouri Pacific, New York Central, Northern Pacific pfd., Pacific Mail, St. Paul, Union Pacific, and Western Union.
