Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - The Spring COMDEX trade show is held, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
  • 1984 - Motorola introduces the 16 MHz 68020 processor, a 32-bit version of the 68000, in CMOS, with on-board cache. Estimated performance is 2-3 MIPS. Price is US$487 each.
  • 1984 - Epson America introduces the Geneva PX-8 laptop computer. It features Z80 processor, 64 kB RAM, 32 kB ROM, flip-up LCD screen with 80x8 text screen, 480x64 graphics, built-in microcassette tape drive, CP/M 2.2, MicroPro's ROM-based WordStar/Calc/Scheduler, and Microsoft BASIC. Price is US$995; weight is 4-5 pounds.
  • 1998 - Unit sales of Windows 98 in its first four days: 530,000.
  • 2000 - Intel announces that the processor code-named "Willamette" will formally be called Pentium 4.
  • 2000 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A laptop computer appears, used to write a romance novel.
  • 2001 - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upholds the ruling that Microsoft maintained its operating system monopoly by illegal means, but rejects the claim that Microsoft attempted to extend its monopoly to the Web browser market, removes Judge Thomas Jackson from the case, and rejects his order calling for the company to be broken up. The court asks the trial court to revisit the issue of tying the browser to Windows.
  • 2004 - At Apple Computer's Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple debuts the Mac OS X 10.4 operating system. A major new feature is systemwide search technology "Spotlight". Code-name during development was Tiger.
  • 2004 - Intel releases the 32/64-bit Xeon processor, with 800 MHz system bus. Speeds and prices are 3.6 GHz (US$851), 3.4 GHz (US$690), 3.2 GHz (US$455), 3 GHz (US$316), 2.8 GHz (US$209) in 1000-unit quantities. Code-name during development was Nocona.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Plow Boy introducing Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1940 - Disney's first Pluto film, Bone Trouble, is released to theaters. Butch, the bulldog, debuts.
  • 1946 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Double Trouble is released to theaters. Daisy Duck also appears.
  • 1974 - Disney holds a press debut of the America Sings attraction in the carousel theater in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1984 - The Disney Channel premieres the series Big Bands at Disneyland.
  • 1988 - Disney's Grand Floridian Beach Resort hotel opens in Walt Disney World, on the west shore of Seven Seas Lagoon. It includes Flagler's restaurant, 1900 Park Fare restaurant, M. Mouse Mercantile shop, Narcoossee's restaurant, Victoria and Albert's restaurant, Commander Porter's shop, and Grand Floridian Cafe restaurant.
  • 1989 - Sotheby's auction house in New York City holds its first contemporary animation auction, based on Disney's film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 600 animation cels from the film are sold.
  • 1991 - The Mickey's Star Traders shop opens in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1995 - The Main Street Athletic Company shop opens on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1974 - The Corvette assembly plant closes due to a labor dispute.
  • 1985 - At the Nelson Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville, Ohio, the Quaker State Oil's Longest Day of Nelson '85, 6th annual 24-Hour Endurance Race for Showroom production Cars is held, over three days. Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Morrison-Cook Motor Sports #98 1986 Corvette, driven by Jim Cook and Ron Grable.
  • 1992 - At the Watkins Glen raceway in New York, round 4 of the IMSA Bridgestone Potenza Supercar series race is held. Finishing 5th is the Quaker State / Boy's Town Corvette LT1, driven by Shawn Hendricks.
  • 2003 - At the Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA show, Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers conducts the auction of over 300 Corvettes. 70 percent sell. Some highlights:
    • Roger Judski of Roger's Corvette Center in Maitland, Florida, pays US$640,000 for a 1967 L88 red coupe with only 12 miles on it. This is a world record for any production Corvette.
    • 1963 Styling Car US$216,000,
    • 1963 Z06 Coupe US$150,000,
    • 1969 coupe US$97,500.
    • The 1954/55 Arizona Proving Grounds Corvette test car with the first Duntov camshaft is bid to US$225,000 but not accepted.

  • 2003 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta race is held, round five of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 5th is the 3R Racing #73 Corvette Z06, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 9th is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette Z06, driven by David Farmer.
    • Finishing 12th is the Courtesy Chevrolet #5 Corvette Z06, driven by Don Campbell.
    • Finishing 14th is the Tiger Racing #99 Corvette Z06, driven by Thomas Oates.
    • In 21st place, but not finishing the race, is the Popeyes/Stunt Driving Academy #52 Corvette Z06, driven by Henry Gilbert.
    • In 22nd place, but not finishing the race, is the Black Dog Racing #25 Corvette, driven by Tony Gaples.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Rathmann Chevy #16 Corvette Z06, driven by Jim Rathmann.

  • 2003 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic race is held, round seven of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTS class and 6th overall is the Dick Greer Racing - Wendy's #82 Corvette, driven by John Fergus and Dick Greer.
    • Finishing 15th in GTS class and 23rd overall is the Silverstone Racing Services #39 Corvette, driven by Larry Huang and Chris Hall.

  • 2003 - In Flint, Michigan, the Solid Axle Corvette Club holds its 2003 National Convention, over three days. A record twenty-six 1953 Corvettes are present.

World War II history:

  • 1919 - In Versailles, France, the peace Treaty of Versailles is signed. Germany returns Alsace-Lorraine to France. The Polish Corridor is created. Germany agrees to pay US$5 billion in gold marks, first installment of reparations. Germany is not allowed to have tanks and military aircraft.
  • 1919 - In Versailles, France, British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau sign the Treaty of Guarantee. The treaty calls for Great Britain and the USA to come to France's immediate aid if Germany makes an unprovoked assault on the country.
  • 1940 - The British Dominions Secretary informs the Australian Government that with Italy in the war and France out, Britain could not send a fleet to the Far East. Britain asks Australia for divisions of troops and two squadrons of aircraft for the defence of Malaya.
  • 1940 - Soviet troops occupy Bessarabia and north-east Bukovina.
  • 1940 - The British Government recognizes Charles de Gaulle as leader of Free Frenchmen.
  • 1942 - The German offensive Plan Blue begins on the eastern front. Army Group South begins its attack into southern Russia. 4th Panzer Army attacks east from Kursk, aiming to capture Voronezh.
  • 1942 - In North Africa, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's forces capture Mersa Matruh, taking 6000 prisoners.
  • 1942 - German submarine U-126 shells and sinks Canadian merchant ship Mona Marie in the Caribbean.
  • 1944 - All of the Cotentin peninsula in Northern France is under US control.

Video game history:

  • 1972 - Atari Inc. is formed by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney.
  • 2000 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat: Special Forces video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2011 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1709 - In the early morning, about 22,000 Swedes attack the Poltava defenders of about 45,000 Russians. By mid-day, the fighting ends. The Swedes are defeated, with some 7,000 killed and 2,500 captured. The King and the remaining army of about 15,000 retreat south-west to Perevolotjna.

USA coin history:

  • 1834 - Congress reduces gold in dollar from 27 grains to 25.8, and fineness to 0.899225, and changes the silver to gold ratio from 15-to-1 to 16.002-to-1. This sets the value of gold at $20.689 per ounce.
  • 1902 - US Congress authorizes Louisiana Purchase Expo $1 gold coin.
  • 1935 - First striking of Hudson commemorative half dollar.
  • 1937 - Congress authorizes 1936 Norfolk, Virginia, Bicentennial commemorative half dollar.

Sports history:

  • 1887 - Philadelphia Phillies make most lopsided shut-out, beating Indianapolis 24-0.
  • 1892 - Philadelphia Phillies tie club record of 16 straight victories.
  • 1919 - Carl Mazes pitches a complete double-header against New York Yankees.
  • 1923 - Brooklyn Dodgers lose 7-0 lead, as Philadelphia Phillies score 8 in bottom of 9th.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees hit 13 home runs, sweep Philadelphia Athletics 23-2 and 10-0.
  • 1961 - Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants set then record longest night game (5:11) 7-7 15-inning tie.
  • 1971 - Philadelphia Phillies' Rick Wise hits two home runs and no-hits Cincinnati Reds.
  • 1973 - Lawsuit in Detroit, Michigan, challenges Little League's "no girls" rule.
  • 1975 - Golfer Lee Trevino is struck by lightning at Western Open (Illinois).
  • 1987 - Don Baylor sets career hit-by-pitch mark at 244 (Pitcher Rick Rhoden).
  • 1988 - Mike Tyson sues to break contract with manager Bill Cayton.
  • 2009 - In Poland, round 8 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Mikko Hirvonen.
  • 2009 - Brazil wins the FIFA Confederations Cup final, defeating the USA 3-2 in South Africa.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Baltimore Orioles by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Detroit Tigers by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats San Diego Padres by score 7-6.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago White Sox beats Los Angeles Angels by score 11-4.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 7-4.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Kansas City Royals by score 8-3.
  • 2022 - At Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cincinnati Reds beats Chicago Cubs by score 5-3.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1924 - Tornado strikes Sandusky and Lorain in Ohio, USA, killing 93.
  • 1975 - Golfer Lee Trevino is struck by lightning at Western Open (Illinois).
  • 2007 - In the aftermath of Greece's worst heatwave in a century, at least eleven people are reported dead from heatstroke, approximately 200 wildfires break out nationwide, and the country's electricity grid nearly collapses due to record breaking demand.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Charleston, South Carolina repulses British sea attack.
  • 1778 - Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey.
  • 1834 - Congress reduces the weight and fineness of standard gold coins, and changes the silver/gold ratio to 16 to 1.

  • 2007 - The US Fish and Wildlife Service announces it would remove the bald eagle from the endangered species list.
  • 2010 - The US Supreme Court rules 5-4 that a ban on handgun ownership in the city of Chicago was unconstitutional, ruling that the US Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of self-defence.
  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 10 million worldwide. The U.S. continues to report the highest number of any country as it reaches 2.5 million, a quarter of all cases globally. The global death toll from COVID-19 exceeds 500,000.

Other history:

  • 1914 - Assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria, Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo by a Serbian Nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. This incident precipitates a war with Serbia, eventually starting the First World War.
  • 1919 - Treaty of Versailles ending WW I is signed.
  • 2004 - Canadian election: The Liberal Party, led by Paul Martin, is reduced to a minority government, after holding a majority since November 1993.
