Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - Paul Allen of Microsoft proposes to Rod Brock of Seattle Computer Products that Microsoft buy all rights to 86-DOS for US$30,000 plus a free license to Microsoft's 8086 macro assembler and linker.
  • 1985 - Microsoft's Bill Gates suggests to Apple Computer's John Sculley that Apple Computer license Macintosh technology to a few significant developers.
  • 1998 - Microsoft releases Windows 98 operting system. It features integrated Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser, and Universal Serial Bus support. Code-name during development was Memphis. Total sales on the first day are 271,000 units.
  • 2001 - Sony releases the Clie PEG-S320 handheld computer. It features monochrome 160x160 display, 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processor, 8 MB RAM, 4 MB flash memory, and Palm OS 4.0. Price is US$200. The unit is to be available in August.
  • 2001 - Sony releases the Clie PEG-N610C handheld computer. It features 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processor, 8 MB RAM, 4 MB flash memory, Palm OS 4.0, and 16-bit color 320x320 resolution screen. Price is US$400. The unit is to be available in August.
  • 2001 - Casio announces the Cassiopeia BE-300 handheld computer. It features 166 MHz NEC processor, 320x240 resolution color screen, Windows CE 3.0 operating system, CompactFlash card slot. Price is US$199.
  • 2003 - Intel releases 2.5 and 2.6 GHz Celeron processors. They feature 218 kB cache, and 400 MHz system bus. Prices are US$89 (2.5 GHz) and US$103 (2.6 GHz) in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the 23rd Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, The Fox Chase, to theaters.
  • 1930 - The Mickey Mouse film The Fire Fighters is released to theaters.
  • 1934 - Milt Kahl begins work at the Disney Studio.
  • 1966 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. to theaters.
  • 1967 - The Circle-Vision 360 theater re-opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland (previously called Circle-Vision). The updated film America the Beautiful is shown.
  • 1980 - Disney releases the animated short film Mickey Mouse Disco to theaters. An album of the music is also released.
  • 1980 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film The Last Flight of Noah's Ark to theaters. It is based on a story by Ernest Gann.
  • 1980 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Herbie Goes Bananas to theaters. The film is the third sequel to the 1969 film The Love Bug.
  • 1995 - The Le Cellier restaurant in the Canada pavilion in World Showcase in Epcot re-opens after being closed for nine months.
  • 1999 - Buena Vista releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Simon Birch to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2010 - A special D23 event is held at the Disney Studio to honor the Walt Disney Archives and founder Dave Smith. The film Archiving the Archives: Forty Years of Preserving the Magic premiers.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1960 - In Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held. Four 1960 Corvettes participate, prepared by Alfred Momo and Chevrolet. Briggs Cunningham enters three white 1960 Corvettes with 283-ci fuel-injected engines, large fuel tanks, Halibrand knock-off wheels, and special oil coolers.
    • In the third hour, after the first pit stop, the Briggs Cunningham #1 Corvette driven by William Kimberly spins off the track in the rain, crashes and burns.
    • The Briggs Cunningham #2 Corvette driven by Richard Thompson and Fred Windridge slides off course into a sand trap; it limps back to the pit area, but in the 17th hour, its engine fails.
    • Finishing 1st in GT 5000 class and 8th overall is the Briggs Cunningham #3 Corvette driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman. The car reached a top speed of 151 mph, and for part of the race, was in 5th place overall. In the last two hours of the race, the radiator cap is accidentally not replaced, leading to a blown head gasket; the car completes the race with ice repeatedly packed in the engine compartment. The engine fails completely after crossing the finish line at about 4AM.
    • Finishing 10th in GT 5000 class and 21st overall (though not completing sufficient distance) is Lloyd Casner's Camoradi USA #4 Corvette driven by Leon Lilley and Fred Gamble.

  • 1978 - At Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Canada, the Molson Trans-Am Championship - Round 4 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 6th overall is the Dead Bear Racing #5 Corvette, driven by Bill Adam.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 8th overall is the Phantom Racing #43 Corvette, driven by Frank Joyce.
    • Finishing 4th in category I and 10th overall is the Apple Valley Racing #9 Corvette, driven by John Huber.
    • Finishing 5th in category I and 11th overall is the Pro-Motor Engineering #73 Corvette, driven by Paul DePirro.
    • Finishing 7th in category II and 12th overall is the Troy Promotions #40 Corvette, driven by Tony DeLorenzo.
    • Finishing 6th in category I and 13th overall is the Metamorphic #80 Corvette, driven by Nick Engels.
    • Finishing 9th in category II and 16th overall is the Pickett Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Greg Pickett.
    • In 12th place in category I and 23rd place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Edwards Racing #72 Corvette, driven by Murray Edwards.
    • In 14th place in category I and 26th place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Babe's Garage #78 Corvette, driven by Babe Headley.

  • 1992 - At the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold / Corvettes USA show is held, over four days. Over 32,500 people attend. The Special Collection IX display includes 33 1967 Corvettes, including CERV III, Sting Ray III, and a recently restored 1967 Corvette L-88, originally raced by the Sunray DX Motorsports team at Sebring in 1967 to first in GT class. Some auction highlights:
    • 1955 automatic, 265-ci, 195-hp, Bloomington Gold-certified $50,500;
    • 1966 convertible, 4-speed, 427-ci, 390-hp, both tops, air-conditioning, knockoff wheels, $48,000;
    • 1967 convertible, 4-speed, 427-ci, 390-hp, air-conditioning $41,000.

  • 1993 - At the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold / Corvettes USA show is held, over four days. 32,000 people and 1800 Corvettes attend. The Special Collection is titled "Motorama Gold", with 29 show Corvettes including 1953 Corvette EX-122, three 1963 styling Corvettes, Mako Shark, Astro-Vette, Callaway twin-turbo ZR-1 Speedster, and ZR-1 Spyder show car.
    • At auction, a mint restored 1955 Gypsy Red convertible with 3-speed manual and 265-ci 195-hp engine sells for US$53,000.
    • A 1967 Rally Red convertible with L-89 427-ci 435-hp engine and side pipes sells for US$55,000.

  • 2005 - At the Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio, the Champ Car Grand Prix of Cleveland race is held, round three of the Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 1st is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Tony Ave Racing #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • Finishing 7th is the Derhaag Motorsports #78 Corvette, driven by Hima Maher.
    • Finishing 9th is the Hypermaz Engineering #83 Corvette, driven by Max Lagod.
    • In 2nd place in GT1 class and 10th overall, but not finishing the race, is the Ruman Racing #23 Corvette, driven by Amy Ruman.
    • In 12th place, but not finishing the race, is the Simms Motorsports #24 Corvette, driven by Philip Simms.

  • 2006 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, the Dodge Save Mart 350 race is held, round five of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 10th is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 11th is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #26 Corvette C6, driven by Claudio Burtin.
    • Finishing 12th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette C6, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • Finishing 13th is the WIT Motorsports #67 Corvette C5, driven by Kevin Chambers.
    • Finishing 16th is the WIT Motorsports #68 Corvette C5, driven by Keith Videtto.
    • Finishing 18th is the Whelen Motorsports #30 Corvette C5, driven by Peyton Sellers.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Southwest Racing #40 Corvette C6, driven by Greg Weirick.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - (0135 hours) Official cease fire between France and Germany goes into effect.
  • 1940 - At New York's Hotel Commodore, a fund-raising lunch of the Emergency Rescue Committee raises US$3500. The committee compiles a list of 200 people to rescue from France.
  • 1940 - While en route from St-Jean-de-Luz, France, to Plymouth, England, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Fraser collides in the Bay of Biscay with British cruiser Calcutta, and sinks, killing 47 men.
  • 1942 - British General Sir Claude Auchinleck takes over command of the British 8th Army from Neil Ritchie, and withdraws the main Allied force a further 110 miles east of Mersa Matruh to El Alamein, 60 miles from Alexandria.
  • 1942 - (evening) 1004 British bombers attack Bremen, Germany, concentrating on the Focke-Wulf fighter plane factory, the Deschim AG submarine ship yard, and the AG Weser ship yard. 59 aircraft attack fighter airfields. The main targets are hit, and 6500 houses are damaged or destroyed. This is the last operational use of the Manchester bomber.
  • 1943 - (evening) 603 British bombers attack Cologne, Germany. About 50 military and industrial buildings are destroyed, along with 15,000 other buildings. 4377 people are killed, and 230,000 are made homeless.
  • 1944 - (2148 hours) The German general commanding the defences of Cherbourg surrenders, though he does not issue a cease-fire order.
  • 1945 - Japanese General Headquarters announces the end of the Okinawa campaign. 1885 aircraft were lost.

Video game history:

  • 2006 - Namco Bandai Games releases the Tekken: Dark Resurrection video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2007 - The value of Nintendo stock hits US$53.06 billion, slightly higher than Sony.
  • 2007 - 2K Games releases The Darkness video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2009 - Electronic Arts releases the Fight Night Round 4 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2017 - Supergiant Games releases the Pyre video game for the PlayStation 4 in the USA.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2009 - At the coin auction at the Torex coin show, a $1 1945 MS-66 sells for $60,375.
  • 2010 - A Canadian $1 million 100-kg gold Maple Leaf coin, the world's largest gold coin, sells at auction in Austria for 3.27 million euros (CDN$4.18 million), the melt value of the gold.

USA coin history:

  • 2008 - The US House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services passes H.R. 6184 "America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008".
  • 2008 - Stack's auctions the Husky Collection. Some highlights:
    • 1792 half disme MS-63 NGC: US$402,500;
    • 1795 Capped Bust Small Eagle gold $5 half eagle MS-65 PCGS: US$586,500;
    • 1796/5 Capped Bust Heraldic Eagle half eagle MS-64 NGC: US$316,250;

Sports history:

  • 1903 - New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox end game deadlocked at 6-6 in 18 innings.
  • 1921 - Jack Hutchinson becomes first American to win golf's British Open.
  • 1928 - New York Giants' Fred Lindstrom ties record of 9 hits in a doubleheader.
  • 1934 - New York Yankees' pitcher John Broaca ties record by striking out five times.
  • 1935 - Joe Louis defeats Primo Carnera in boxing at Yankee Stadium, New York.
  • 1937 - Chicago Cubs' Augie Galan becomes first player to switch hit home runs in a game.
  • 1948 - Joe Louis knocks out Jersey Joe Walcott in 11 rounds to retain championship.
  • 1961 - Baltimore Orioles and California Angels use a record 16 pitchers in a game (8 each) in 14 innings.
  • 1962 - New York Yankees' Jack Reed's 22nd inning home run wins a 7-hour game, 9-7 over Detroit Tigers.
  • 1968 - Bobby Bonds hits a grand slam in his first major league game (San Francisco Giants).
  • 1969 - Longest tennis match in Wimbeldon history, Pancho Gonzalez beats Charles Pasarell in 112 game marathon (5 hours 12 minues).
  • 1973 - Udo Beyer of German Democratic Republic puts the shot a record 20.47m.
  • 1978 - Argentina defeats the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time to win the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
  • 1983 - Udo Beyer of German Democratic Republic sets record for shot put, 22.22m.
  • 1983 - India wins the Prudential Cup (Cricket World Cup).
  • 1988 - The Netherlands defeats the Soviet Union 2-0 to win Euro 88.
  • 1999 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New York Knicks 78-77 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to take home the title in a strike-shortened season.
  • 2010 - Edwin Jackson throws 149 pitches in a no-hitter, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Philadelphia Phillies beats San Diego Padres by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Detroit Tigers beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 6-3.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Marines beats Los Angeles Angels by score 5-3.

  • 2007 - In England, following the wettest June on record, Sheffield and South Yorkshire are affected by flooding. Much of Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham is flooded when the River Don breaches its banks.

USA history:

  • 1788 - Virginia becomes 10th state to ratify US constitution.
  • 1798 - US passes Alien Act allowing president to deport dangerous aliens.
  • 1862 - Day one of the Seven Days begins with fighting at Oak Grove.
  • 1867 - Barbed wire is patented by Lucien Smith of Kent, Ohio, USA.
  • 1868 - Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina re-admitted to US.
  • 1876 - US Army General George Custer attacks the Lakota and Cheyenne village.
  • 1876 - Native American forces led by Chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull defeat the U.S. Army troops of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in a bloody battle near southern Montana's Little Bighorn River.
  • 1888 - Republican Convention, in Chicago, nominates Benjamin Harrison as presidential candidate.
  • 1929 - President Herbert Hoover authorizes building of Boulder Dam in Colorado.
  • 1938 - US federal minimum wage law guarantees workers 40 cents per hour.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt issues Executive Order 8802 forbidding discrimination.
  • 1948 - US military governor for Germany, General Lucius D. Clay, orders all available transport planes to fly food and supplies into Berlin, beginning Operation Vittles.
  • 1951 - CBS transmits the first commercial color TV broadcast, an hour-long special hosted by Arthur Godfrey, from New York to Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington DC.
  • 1962 - US Supreme Court rules New York school prayer unconstitutional.
  • 1973 - John Dean begins testimony before US Senate Watergate Committee.
  • 1977 - Former US president Lyndon Johnson denies report he had a cancer during his presidency.
  • 1982 - US Secretary of State Alexander Haig Junior resigns, replaced by George Schultz.
  • 1982 - The Institute for Puerto Rican Policy is founded in New York City to research and advocate for Puerto Rican and Latino community issues.
  • 1985 - Fireworks factory near Hallett, Oklahoma explodes (21 die).
  • 1998 - The United States Supreme Court rules that the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 is unconstitutional.
