  • 1982 - Commodore International announces that James Finke will leave the company as president on expiration of his contract on June 30.
  • 1999 - Testimony in the US Justice Department versus Microsoft anti-trust case ends, after eight months.
  • 2002 - Intel introduces the 1.9 and 2 GHz Mobile Pentium 4-M processor. It features 8 kB Level 1 data cache, 12 kB Level 1 instruction cache, 512 kB Level 2 cache, 400 MHz system bus, MMX, SSE, and SSE2 instructions, 64 GB address space, two pipelined FPUs. It incorporates 55 million transistors in a 0.13-micron process. Code-name during development was Northwood. Prices are US$401 (1.9 GHz) and US$637 (2 GHz) in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2002 - Intel introduces the 1.33 to 1.5 GHz Mobile Celeron processor. It features 8 kB Level 1 data cache, 12 kB Level 1 instruction cache, 256 kB Level 2 cache, 400 MHz system bus, MMX, SSE, and SSE2 instructions, 64 GB address space, two pipelined FPUs.   • 2002 - In Tokyo, Japan, Sharp introduces the Zaurus SL-A300 handheld computer. It features Linux operating system, Intel 200 MHz XScale PXA210 processor, 64 MB RAM, 3.5-inch active matrix 320x240 pixel display, Secure Digital slot. Size is 2.7 x 4.4 inches; weight is 4.2 ounces. Price is to be 50,000 yen (about US$411) when released July 12.
  • 2002 - Hewlett-Packard releases the HP iPAQ Pocket PC H3950 handheld computer. It features Pocket PC 2002 operating system, remote control software and infrared port, Secure Digital slot, transreflective display, Intel 400 MHz XScale PXA250 processor, lithium-polymer batteries, 64 MB RAM, 32 MB flash memory. Price is US$649.
  • 2002 - Hewlett-Packard releases the HP iPAQ Pocket PC H3970 handheld computer. It features 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA250 processor, 64 MB RAM, 48 MB flash ROM, remote control software and infrared port, Secure Digital slot, Pocket PC 2002 operating system, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, backlit transreflective TFT color display, lithium-polymer batteries. Weight is 6.6 ounces; size is 5.3 x 3.3 x 0.6 inches; price is US$749.
  • 2002 - Hewlett-Packard releases the HP Jornada 728 Handheld PC. It features 206 MHz Intel SA1110 processor, modem, 64 MB RAM. Price is US$999.
  • 2002 - Sony releases the Clie PEG-T665C handheld computer. It features 66 MHz Dragonball Super VZ processor, 16 MB DRAM, 4 MB Flash memory, 320x320 pixel TFT color display, Palm OS 4.1, Memory Stick port, 16 Sony applications, 18 third-party applications. It includes remote control software and infrared port allowing it to be used s a remote control for home entertainment equipment. Size is 4.75 x 3 x 0.5 inches; price is US$399.99.
  • 2002 - Kyocera announces the Kyocera 7135 handheld computer. It features phone, keypad, color screen, Global Positioning System technology, Secure Digital slot, digital audio player, 16 MB RAM, Palm OS 4.1. Size is 3.97 x 2.43 x 1.17 inches; weight is 6.6 ounces. Price is expected to be about US$500 when released later in the year.
  • 2004 - Intel releases the Celeron D 320, 325, 330, and 335, with speeds 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, and 2.8 GHz respectively. Prices range from US$69 to US$117 in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1949 - The Pluto film Bubble Bee is released.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the animated short film Aquarela do Brasil to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film Saludos Amigos. José Carioca and Donald Duck appear.
  • 1959 - Disney premieres the live-action feature film Darby O'Gill and the Little People to theaters in Dublin, Ireland.
  • 1972 - The Crystal Arts shop opens in Disneyland.
  • 1985 - Disney names John F. Cooke as new president of The Disney Channel.
  • 1987 - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer releases the film Spaceballs to theaters in the USA. "Someone says "Did I miss something? When did we get to Disneyland?".
  • 1993 - The Discoveryland Station of the Euro Disneyland Railroad opens at Euro Disneyland.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures generally releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in the USA. A character sings "It's a Small World after all" to which another character says "No no, anything but that!", a reference to the Disneyland attraction It's a Small World.
  • 1994 - The Electric Umbrella fast-food facility opens in Communicore East in Epcot.
  • 2006 - The Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, hosts the premiere of the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest outdoors.
  • 2006 - The prop ship the Flying Dutchman from the Pirates of the Caribbean films is installed offshore at Castaway Cay island.
  • 2008 - 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment releases the film Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs on DVD in the USA and Canada.
    • A short black and white segment mimics Disney's Steamboat Willie.
    • The title sequence mimics many of the early Disney short films.
    • A character says "You didn't like Country Bear Jamboree either.", a reference to the Disneyland performing audio-animatronic bears attraction.

  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A movie theater is playing "That Darn Cyclops", a reference to Disney's film That Darn Cat.
  • 2011 - Disney releases the Pixar animated film Cars 2 to theaters in the US.
  • 2011 - Disney releases the animated short Hawaiian Vacationto theaters in the USA.
  • 2016 - The Disney Channel premieres the series Bizaardvark.
  • 2016 - The Disney Channel Original Movie Adventures in Babysitting airs.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, an SCCA race is held for C Production class cars.
    • Finishing 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Bark Henry.
    • Finishing 2nd overall is the Corvette driven by Fred Windridge.

  • 1956 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, an SCCA race is held for B, C, and D Modified class cars.
    • Jerry Earl and Richard Thompson debut Earl's #144 Corvette SR-2 in racing. The initial race performance is disappointing, finishing 16th overall. Thompson considers the car overweight and underpowered.
    • Finishing 7th in S5.0 class and 10th overall is the Corvette driven by Max Goldman.

  • 1960 - In Meadowlake, Illinois, an SCCA National race is held. The Sting Ray racer is raced but does not finish, due to a failed water pump.
  • 1977 - At the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington, Illinois, the 5th Annual Bloomington Corvette Corral show is held, over three days.
  • 1978 - At the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington, Illinois, the Bloomington Corvette Corral is held, over two days. New to this year's show is Gold Certification judging.
  • 2002 - The Historic Motorama departs from Flint, Michigan, starting at the Sloan Museum's Annual Auto Fair. One Corvette of each year takes part, including 1983.
  • 2004 - In St. Charles, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA show is held, over four days. The GoldYear display celebrates 1954 Corvette. The Special Collection XX showcases the Corvettes of Reeves Callaway.
  • 2005 - In St. Charles, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold Corvettes USA show is held, three days. The Special Collection XXI features "Great Stories". Included is a 1957 Corvette raced by Chevrolet in late 1956/early 1957. Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers conducts The Gold Auction of 500 Corvettes. Highlight of the auction is a 1969 L-88 Monza Red roadster with removable hard top: US$250,000.
  • 2006 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the EMCO Gears Classic race is held, round ten of the Grand American Rolex Series.
    • Finishing 5th in GT class and 23rd overall is the Banner Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Tim Gaffney and Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 10th in GT class and 28th overall is the Beachman Racing #56 Corvette, driven by Bruce Beachman and Mike Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing 11th in GT class and 29th overall is the ASC Motorsports #55 Corvette, driven by Zach Arnold and Jason Workman.

  • 2006 - At the Huntingdon Racecourse, north of London, England, the Classic Corvette Club of the U.K. holds its 27th annual Nationals, over two days. 250 Corvettes attend.
  • 2007 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the EMCO Gears Classic race is held, round eight of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 7th is the Team Sahlen #43 Corvette driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Wayne Nonnamaker.
    • Finishing 13th is the Stevenson Automotive #57 Corvette driven by Dominic Cicero and Marc Bunting.
    • Finishing 14th is the Beachman Racing #56 Corvette driven by Bruce Beachman and Michael Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing 21st is the Team Sahlen #42 Corvette driven by Joe Sahlen and Will Nonnamaker.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - France signs an armistice with Italy.
  • 1941 - Spanish Foreign Minister Ramón Serrano Suñer encourages Spaniards to volunteer to fight with Germany against Russia. Within days, 18,000 openings for a complete division are filled. Agustin Muñoz Guardes is selected as General.
  • 1942 - The second operational rehearsal for the Operation Rutter raid on Dieppe is held, code named Yukon II.
  • 1942 - Quote by US navy chief antisubmarine warfare expert Captain Wilder D. Baker, to naval commander-in-chief Admiral Ernest J. King: "The Battle of the Atlantic is being lost".
  • 1943 - (evening) 630 British bombers attack Elbefeld, destroying 171 factories, 3000 houses, and 1800 people.
  • 1944 - Allied leaders approve plans to resurrect Operation Anvil, the invasion of southern France.
  • 1944 - (1917 hours) In the English Channel, Canadian, British, and Czech ships and planes sink German submarine U-971.
  • 1944 - Royal Canadian Air Force planes sinks German submarine U-1225.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - At a meeting in Sony headquarters in Japan, president Norio Ohga decides to break from making a Nintendo-compatible 16-bit machine, and "chart our own course".
  • 1994 - NEC releases the PC Engine Duo-RX video game system in Japan. The system is basicly the same as the Duo-R, with a 6-button controller.
  • 1994 - At the Summer Consumer Electronics Show, Nintendo unveils the Donkey Kong Country video game for the Super NES.
  • 1997 - 3DO completes the sale of its hardware business to Samsung, for US$20 million.
  • 1998 - Midway releases the Mortal Kombat 4 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases the Eternal Darkness video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2008 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2008 - 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment releases the film Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs on DVD in the USA and Canada.
    • A wrist-watch version of Pong is played.
    • A video game arcade includes games: Honkey Kong, Coin Vacuum, Exlaxian, Normal Kombat, Ms. Marple Madness, Shovel Command, Extreme Flosser.
    • A Pac-Man board game is played.

  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A character says "We've lost power to the forward Game Boy, Mario not responding!" and uses a Nintendo NES controller.

Swedish history:

  • 1523 - Stockholm castle surrenders to King Gustav's forces.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1997 - A & W Restaurants moves its world headquarters from Livonia to Farmington Hills, in Michigan, USA.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1949 - Distribution of 1949 silver dollars commences. The obverse design of the silver dollar commemorates the entry of Newfoundland into the Confederation. Dollars dated 1949 are produced in 1949 and 1950.

USA coin history:

  • 1816 - The Philadelphia Mint begins using steam power for the strip rolling mills.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes 1937 Roanoke Island commemorative half dollar.
  • 1967 - US Congress passes an Act to Authorize Adjustments of Outstanding Silver Certificates and Other Purposes. This allows the Treasury to write off amounts of silver certificates destroyed and remaining in collectors hands, and to cease redemptions in silver one year from adoption of the act.
  • 1967 - Congress approves legislation restoring mint marks to coins.
  • 1968 - Last day of redeeming US silver certificates for silver, in any form.
  • 1976 - The last 40 percent silver Bicentennial coins are struck.

Sports history:

  • 1882 - US Baseball's National League expells umpire Richard Higham for dishonesty.
  • 1894 - Decision is made to begin modern Olympics every four years.
  • 1908 - New York Yankees replace Clark Griffith with Kid Elberfeld as manager.
  • 1911 - John McDermott becomes first American to win US Open golf tournament.
  • 1922 - AFPA changes name to NFL, Chicago Staleys become Chicago Bears.
  • 1936 - Joe DiMaggio becomes 5th to hit two home runs in one inning, New York Yankees beat Saint Louis Browns 18-4.
  • 1950 - New York Giants' Wes Westrum hits three home runs and a triple.
  • 1955 - Harmon Killebrew hits his first home run (off Billy Hoeff).
  • 1968 - Canadian Sandra Post becomes first non-US and first rookie LPGA winner.
  • 1968 - Jim Northrup hits two grand-slammers to help Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland Indians 14-3.
  • 1968 - Joe Frazier TKOs Manda Ramos for world heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1970 - Bobby Murcer ties record of four consecutive home runs.
  • 1980 - Affirmed wins $500,000 Hollywood Cup, first horse to win $2 million.
  • 1983 - Don Sutton becomes 8th pitcher to strikeout 3,000 batters.
  • 1984 - Joe Morgan sets career home run mark for second basemen with number 265.
  • 1988 - Cleveland Indians' pitcher Doug Jones sets record of 14 consecutive saves.
  • 1995 - The New Jersey Devils sweep the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings to win their first Stanley Cup in the lock-out shortened season.
  • 2010 - American tennis player John Isner defeats Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4 3-6 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-3) 70-68 in their first-round encounter at Wimbledon. The longest match in history took 11 hours and five minutes over three days. The game broke the previous records for the longest match, the longest set, the most games in a set and a match, the most aces in a match and the most aces by a player.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cincinnati Reds beats San Francisco Giants by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Philadelphia Phillies by score 1-0.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Detroit Tigers beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Los Angeles Angels by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago Cubs beats Saint Louis Cardinals by score 3-0.

  • 2012 - Shenzhou 9, a Chinese spacecraft carrying three Chinese astronauts, docks manually with orbiting module Tiangong 1, first time for the country, making them as the third country to successfully perform the mission.

  • 1897 - Hail injures 26 in Topeka, Kansas, USA.

  • 1813 - Battle of Beaver Dam: British and Indian forces defeat US forces.
  • 1841 - Saint John's College opens in the Bronx, New York.
  • 1861 - Tennessee becomes eleventh state to secede from USA.
  • 1897 - Hail injures 26 in Topeka, Kansas, USA.

  • 1915 - 800 die as excursion steamer Eastland capsizes in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

  • 2007 - A wildfire starts in South Lake Tahoe eventually destroying 254 homes in the area.
  • 2021 - A portion of the Champlain South Towers condominium building collapses in Surfside, Florida, United States, leaving 98 people dead.
  • 2022 - The US Supreme Court overturns the 1973 decision in Roe v Wade which considered abortion a right protected by the Constitution. The overturning decision moves the regulation of legality of abortions back to the individual states.

  • 1314 - Battle of Bannockburn; Scotland regains independence from England.
  • 1497 - John Cabot claims eastern Canada for England.
  • 1509 - Henry VIII crowned King of England.
