Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Logical International files a trademark infringement suit against Coleco Industries, claiming prior use of the name "Adam" for a computer.
  • 1996 - Compaq Computer announces the Armada line of notebook computers, including the low-end 1100 series, and high-end 4100 series. Compaq also announces three new models in the LTE 5300 line.
  • 1997 - At the PC Expo show, Corel releases the WordPerfect Suite 8, including WordPerfect 8, QuattroPro 8, Presentations 8, CorelCentral, PhotoHouse 1.1, Netscape Navigator 3.0, Envoy 7 viewer, Bitstream Font Navigator 2. Full price is US$395; upgrade price is US$179.
  • 2002 - Microsoft releases the Internet Explorer 5.2 web browser for the Mac OS X. The software is free from Microsoft's Web site.
  • 2008 - Mozilla releases the Firefox 3.0 web browser for download. 8.3 million downlaoads are recorded in the first 24 hours.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - William Banks Levy becomes Disney's representative in England, receiving authority to license Mickey and Minnie Mouse character merchandise.
  • 1933 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Mechanical Man is released to theaters. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1938 - The Donald Duck film Polar Trappers is released. Goofy also appeared.
  • 1971 - At 11:13 AM, Disneyland welcomes its 100-millionth guest, Valerie Suldo of New Jersey.
  • 1972 - The Main Street Electrical Parade premieres at Disneyland. The vehicles feature 500,000 sparkling lights, and 500 miles of wiring.
  • 1984 - Roy Disney and the Brain Trust meet to discuss recent events, and decide on a course of action. They decide to sue Disney to halt the Gibson Greetings deal, and to demand that the acquisition be put to a vote of the shareholders.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs the pilot Appearances.
  • 1996 - Nevis issues eleven postage stamps depicting Disney couples.
  • 2005 - The Disney Channel premieres The Buzz on Maggie TV show.
  • 2008 - Disney releases The Sword in the Stone: 45th Anniversary Special Edition DVD in Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1989 - At the Detroit Grand Prix auction, of Vintage Sports and Racing Cars, CERV I and CERV II are put up at auction. The CERV II is bid up to US$525,000, not high enough for the reserve of US$750,000 set by owners K.D. James and Steve Hendrickson.
  • 1995 - At the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, the 24 Heures du Mans race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT2 class and 9th overall is the Callaway Competition #70 Callaway Corvette, driven by Enrico Bertaggia, Johnny Unser, and Frank Jelinski.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT2 class and 11th overall is the Agusta Racing Team #75 Callaway Corvette, driven by Robin Donovan, Eugene O'Brien, and Rocky Agusta.
    • A third GT2 class Agusta Racing Team #76 Callaway Corvette driven by Thorkild Thyrring, Almo Coppelli, and Patrick Bourdais does not complete the race.
    • A GT1 class ZR-1 Corvette Team USA #30 Corvette ZR-1 driven by John Paul, Jr., Chris McDougall, and James Mero does not complete the race.

  • 2000 - At the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days. For the first time, Chevrolet's Corvette Group officially enters two Corvette C5-R race cars.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTS class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing/Gary Pratt #64 Corvette C5-R driven by Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins, and Franck Freon.
    • Finishing 4th in GTS class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing/Gary Pratt #63 Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows, Chris Kneifel, and Justin Bell.

  • 2001 - At The Raceway at Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan, Round 5 of the Speedvision World Championship - GT is held.
    • Finishing 5th is the Aggregate Industries / McClure Concrete #73 Corvette C5, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 7th is the KAC Technologies #15 Corvette C5, driven by Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 9th is the Lees Stanford Chevrolet / Pirate Racing #01 Corvette C5, driven by Bill Cooper.
    • Finishing 16th is the Grand Sport Racing #08 Corvette C5, driven by Don Sak.
    • Finishing 17th is the D&L Franzen Cons Rohr Corporation #7 Corvette C5, driven by Dennis Petersen.
    • In 18th place, but not finishing the race, is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette C5, driven by David Farmer.
    • In 20th place, but not finishing the race, is the Grand Sport Racing #04 Corvette C5, driven by Bobby Sak.

  • 2006 - At the Circuit de la Sarthe in France, the 74th Michelin 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 4th overall is the #64 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Jan Magnussen.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class and 7th overall is the #72 Corvette C5-R driven by Jéròme Policand, Patrice Goueslard, and Luc Alphond.
    • Finishing 7th in GT1 class and 12th overall is the #63 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Max Papis.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - France requests an armistice with Germany.
  • 1940 - Soviet occupation of Estonia begins.
  • 1940 - Blue Funnel Line ship Teiresias is attacked by German aircraft while evacuating British Expeditionary Force troops from Saint Nazaire. The ship is abandoned when the engine room is flooded.
  • 1940 - (late) Winston Churchill decides Charles de Gaulle should be recognized as speaking for France, not Marshal Pétain.
  • 1940 - (night) British Bomber Command launches 138 aircraft on Germany, primarily on oil targets. Only one plane does not return.
  • 1944 - The 73rd German V-1 bomb reaches England.
  • 1971 - The USA formally ends its military occupation of the Ryukyu Islands, returning the archipelago to Japan.
  • 1992 - Christmas Island issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Eidsvold and Nissa Maru.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Atari grants Centuri exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture and distribute the Tunnel Hunt arcade game.
  • 2003 - Sega releases the Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut video game for the Nintendo GameCube in the US.
  • 2009 - Atari releases the Ghostbusters video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo Wii in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1397 - On Trinity Sunday in Midsummer in Kalmar, at a coronation ceremony, Erik of Pomerania is crowned King of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Members of the three kingdoms meet for four weeks to discuss future relations.
  • 1629 - Swedes battle Polish and Imperial troops at Honigfelde (Stuhm). Swedes are forced to retreat with heavy losses. King Gustav Adolf narrowly escapes capture.
  • 1630 - King Gustav Adolf sails from Stockholm with an army of 13,000.
  • 1709 - King Karl XII is wounded in the foot in a skirmish with Russians.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1969 - The Minister of Finance announces that Richard Taylor has won the design competition for the reverse of the 1970 $1 coin.
  • 1988 - Prior to the Torex coin show auction in Toronto, Ontario, RCMP seize a nickel 50-cent coin with the reverse of a Canadian 1981 $100 gold coin. The Royal Canadian Mint had informed the RCMP that the piece to be auctioned had been illegally produced at the Mint.

USA coin history:

  • 1973 - The US Mint begins sales of miniature bags of 1-cent and 5-cent coins, from each of the three mints, in miniature Federal Reserve bags. Issue price is $2 for 5 bags.
  • 2004 - Whitman Publishing releases the 2005 edition of the Guide Book to United States Coins.

Sports history:

  • 1876 - First to hit two home runs, and score five runs in 9-inning National League game (George Hall, Philadelphia Athletics).
  • 1948 - Joe Cronin pinch hit home runs in both ends of a doubleheader.
  • 1960 - Ted Williams hits his 500th home run.
  • 1962 - Brazil beats Czechoslovakia in soccer's 7th World Cup at Santiago.
  • 1978 - Ron Guidry sets New York Yankees' record with 18 strike-outs.
  • 1989 - US beats Guatemala 2-1, in third round of 1990 world soccer cup.
  • 1994 - The 1994 FIFA World Cup soccer competition begins in the United States.
  • 2001 - A.S.Roma wins the scudetto (Italian championship).
  • 2008 - The Boston Celtics win a record 17th NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 131-92 in Game Six.
  • 2009 - Ivan Rodriguez, back catcher for the Houston Astros, catches his 2,227th game, beating the old record in Major League Baseball.
  • 2010 - The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics 83-79 in the decisive seventh game of the NBA finals and secure back-to-back titles.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Los Angeles Angels by score 8-1.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Minnesota Twins by score 7-2.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Oakland Athletics by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats San Diego Padres by score 10-4.
  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Chicago White Sox by score 13-3.
  • 2022 - At Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Detroit Tigers by score 7-0.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats Saint Louis Cardinals by score 6-5.

  • 1882 - Tornado kills 130 in Iowa, USA.

USA history:

  • 1775 - British forces attack American militiamen at Breed's Hill; they initially retreat, British Major John Pitcairn is killed by a musket ball, but the British clear the hill.
  • 1850 - Paddle-wheeler G P Griffith burns off Mentor, Ohio (206 die).
  • 1856 - Republican Party opens its first national convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1863 - Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford chartered (first accident insurer).
  • 1863 - Battle of Aldie; Confederates fail to drive back the USA in Virginia.
  • 1882 - Tornado kills 130 in Iowa, USA.
  • 1885 - Statue of Liberty arrives in New York City aboard French ship Isere.

  • 1946 - SouthWest Bell innaugurates mobile telephone commercial service, Saint Louis, Missouri. USA.
  • 1947 - First round-the-world civil air service leaves New York City.
  • 1950 - First kidney transplant (Chicago, Illinois, USA).
  • 1950 - Julius Rosenberg is arrested in the US on suspicion of espionage, accused of heading a spy ring that passed top-secret information concerning the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union.
  • 1957 - Tuskegee boycott begins (blacks boycott city stores).
  • 1960 - Fire consumes the El Rancho Vegas casino resort, on the Las Vegas Strip.
  • 1963 - US Supreme Court rules against Bible reading/prayer in public schools.
  • 1965 - 28.14 cm (11.08 inches) of rainfall, Holly, Colorado (state 24-hour record).

  • 1986 - US Chief Justice Warren Earl Burger resigns; Antonin Scalia nominated.
  • 1988 - Microsoft releases MS DOS 4.0.
  • 1991 - U.S. President Zachary Taylor is exhumed to discover whether or not his death was caused by arsenic poisoning, instead of acute gastrointestinal illness; no trace of arsenic is found.
  • 1992 - A 'Joint Understanding' agreement on arms reduction is signed by U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Russian President Boris Yeltsin (this is later codified in START II).
  • 2005 - A 6.7 aftershock, which followed a 5.3 earthquake the previous day, hits California, making it the fourth earthquake since June 12 in California.
  • 2005 - Because of "quadruple-witching" options and futures expiration, the New York Stock Exchange sees the heaviest first-hour trading on record. 704 million shares are traded between 9:30-10:30 A.M. (1.92 billion shares for the day).
  • 2008 - The Boston Celtics win a record 17th NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 131-92 in Game Six.
  • 2009 - Former American HealthSouth chief executive Richard Scrushy is ordered to pay US$2.9 billion after a judge found him responsible for an accounting fraud that nearly bankrupted the hospital chain.

  • 1967 - China becomes world's fourth thermonuclear (Hydrogen-bomb) power.
