Personal computer history:

  • 1977 - The National Computer Conference is held in Dallas, Texas. For the first time, an area is set up for microcomputer companies.
  • 1983 - Microsoft, Spectravideo, and 14 Japanese computer companies announce the MSX (MicroSoft eXtended BASIC) specifications for low-end, 8-bit home computers systems. The standard consists of: Zilog Z80, TI TMS9918A video processor, General Instruments AY-8910 sound processor, NEC cassette interface chip, Atari joystick interface, 64 kB RAM, Microsoft's 32 kB ROM-based extended BASIC.
  • 1999 - IBM releases the 37.5 GB Deskstar 37GP hard drive, the world's largest personal computer hard drive. It features 5400-rpm motor, five platters, 2 MB cache buffer, ATA-4 interface. Price is US$350.
  • 2000 - Microsoft releases Windows CE 3.0. It includes better real-time and multimedia capabilities, supports more languages, and is more easily broken up for use in pieces.
  • 2005 - Microsoft releases Windows XP N, without Windows Media Player.
  • 2006 - Bill Gates announces he will ease away from Microsoft duties over the next two years. Ray Ozzie is immediately shifted from chief technology officer to chief software architect.
  • 2022 - Microsoft ceases support for Internet Explorer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1957 - Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue food facility opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1959 - The live 90-minute TV special Disneyland '59 airs, introducing new attractions at Disneyland: Submarine Voyage, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Monorail, Motor Boat Cruise, and an enlarged Autopia.
  • 1960 - The Hallmark card shop opens on Main Street at Disneyland.
  • 1961 - The first Disneyland Grad Nite Party is held. About 8500 students attend from 28 Los Angeles schools, the largest high school graduation party ever in the US.
  • 1967 - The Club 33 restaurant opens at 33 Royal Street, in New Orleans Square, in Disneyland.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network airs the sixth and last episode of the TV series Small and Frye.
  • 1984 - The Securities and Exchange Commission begins an investigation of trading in Disney stock on June 11.
  • 1987 - Redonda issues a set of postage stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • 1987 - Sierra Leone issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Canada.
  • 1990 - The stage show Dick Tracy Starring in Diamond Double-Cross begins performances at Videopolis in Disneyland.
  • 1990 - The Patented Pastimes shop opens on Main Street in Disneyland.
  • 1990 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures animated Roger Rabbit film Roller Coaster Rabbit to theaters.
  • 1990 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Dick Tracy to theaters. The film cost US$47 million to produce and US$54 million in marketing.
  • 1991 - The Studio Pizzeria restaurant opens in the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures pre-releases the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film The Lion King to selected theatres in new York and Los Angeles.
  • 1999 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Enemy of the State on videocassette.
  • 2001 - Disney generally releases the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire to theaters in the USA. The film cost US$90 million to produce.
  • 2001 - The Atwater Ink & Paint shop opens on Buena Vista Streey at Disney California Adventure.
  • 2009 - Disney XD Original Series Disney Zeke and Luther premieres.
  • 2012 - The Buena Vista Street area opens at Disney California Adventure.
  • 2012 - The Clarabelle's Hand-Scooped Ice Cream restaurant opens on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure.
  • 2012 - The Big Top Toys shop opens on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure.
  • 2012 - The Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge opens on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure.
  • 2012 - The Cars Land area opens in Disney California Adventure. Attractions: Luigi's Flying Tires, Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, Radiator Springs Racers. Restaurants: Cozy Cone Motel, Flo's V8 Café, Fillmore's Taste-In. Shops: Ramone's House of Body Art, Radiator Springs Curios.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - The Chevrolet R&D Center completes the transformation of Jerry Earl's 1956 Corvette into a racer. It is designated "SR-2", for "Sebring Racer". The SCCA racing number 144 is painted on the car.
  • 1962 - Semon Knudsen approves plans to build 125 special racing Corvettes, 25 for Chevrolet, 100 to be built by outside contractors between July 1962 and June 1963.
  • 1970 - In Paris, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held. Finishing 1st in GT 5000+ class is the Greder Racing #2 Corvette driven by Henri Greder and Jean-Pierre Rouget. Jean-Claude Aubriet and Jacques Bourdon race the Ecurie Léopard #1 1968 Corvette L-88, but crash partway through the race.
  • 1974 - In Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days. Finishing 10th in GT class and 18th overall is the Henri Greder #51 Corvette driven by Henri Greder and Marie-Claude Beaumont.
  • 1975 - At the Portland International Raceway, in Portland, Oregon, Round 3 of the G.I. Joe's SCCA Trans-American Championship series is held.
    • Finishing 1st is the Braun Corvette 427, driven by John Greenwood. Greenwood sets a new race lap record at 92.079 mph.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Stark Enterprises Corvette 427, driven by Rick Stark.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Vic Hubbard - Mocko Corvette 427, driven by David Mock.
    • Finishing 4th is the Samuelsen Corvette 427, driven by Dale Samuelsen.

  • 1996 - At the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, the 24 Heures du Mans race is held. The GT2 class Agusta Racing Team #74 Callaway Corvette driven by Patrick Camus, Rocky Agusta, and Almo Coppelli does not finish.
  • 2001 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway, the Lime Rock - GT race is held, part of the SCCA - Speedvision World Challenge Series.
    • Finishing 4th is the A&W Plumbing / Grand Sport Racing #04 Corvette C5, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 5th is the KAC Technologies #15 Corvette C5, driven by Eric Curran.

  • 2001 - At the Circuito do Estoril raceway in Europe, Round 3 of the European Le Mans Series is held. Finishing 10th in GT class and 14th overall is the #68 Atomic Kitten Racing Corvette C5, driven by Roger Walters and Tom Bellamy.
  • 2001 - In Le Mans, France, the annual Parade des Pilotes takes place before the Le Mans 24 Hours race. 20 Corvettes of the C5 Registry from the US also participate.
  • 2002 - In Le Mans, France, the 70th 24 Hours of Le Mans in held, over two days.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #63 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 13th overall is the Corvette Racing #64 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins, and Franck Freon.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Soviet forces occupy Lithuania.
  • 1940 - In England, the decision is made to bring home the remaining British Expeditionary Force in France. 136,963 British and 38,500 Allied troops are transported across the English Channel.
  • 1940 - In convoy HX-48, eastbound across the Atlantic ocean, German submarine U-38 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship Erik Boye near Land's End, the south-west tip of England. There are no casualties. This is the first Canadian merchant ship sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic.
  • 1941 - In North Africa, British forces launch Operation Battleaxe, an attack on Halfaya Pass. Twelve of thirteen British Matilda tanks are destroyed.
  • 1943 - German General Heinz Guderian tells Adolf Hitler that the new Panther tanks are not ready for battle.
  • 1944 - American forces begin landing on Saipan in the Marianas Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
  • 1944 - American B-29 Super Fortress bombers based in China begin bombing the Japanese home island of Northern Kyushu.
  • 1944 - Over 220 British bombers attack Boulogne, France. Combined with the previous day's attack on Le Havre, about 130 vessels are knocked out. Two planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - The wartime Coalition Government in England is ended.
  • 1974 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 30th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1994 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of American Marines landing on Saipan.
  • 2005 - Antigua & Barbuda issues 8 postage stamps for the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - New York state Supreme Court justice Thomas Galligan rules that New York City could limit locations of video game arcades, saying that the games are not protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
  • 1989 - Federal District Judge Fern Smith grants Nintendo's request, and issues a preliminary injuction blocking Tengen from selling its Tetris video game cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System, effective June 21.
  • 1994 - Sony announces that LSI Logic will build a custom processor for its upcoming PlayStation game system. The processor will incorporate a 34 MHz MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a graphics coprocessor, video decompression logic, and system logic.
  • 2001 - Paramount Pictures releases the live-action feature film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider to theaters in the US. The film is based on the popular video game series.
  • 2003 - Sega releases the Sonic Pinball Party video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US. Price is US$29.95.
  • 2004 - Atari releases the Shadow Ops: Red Mercury video game for the Xbox in the USA.
  • 2006 - In Louisiana, Governor Kathleen Blanco signs bill HB1381 into law, imposing fines of US$100-2000 and up to one year in prison for selling games with violent content to minors.
  • 2007 - Microsoft releases the special commemorative Halo 3 Zune through GameStop stores. The system comes in a black case with Halo graphics, preloaded with Halo videos. Price is US$246.
  • 2010 - Microsoft unveils a slimmer Xbox 360, with built-in Wi-Fi and 250GB hard drive.
  • 2010 - (to June 17) The Electronic Entertainment Expo is held in Los Angeles, California.
  • 2010 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo unveils the Nintendo 3DS handheld device that can play games and show movies in 3D without glasses. The device comes with a touch screen and a regular screen, and three built-in cameras, enabling the machine to snap digital photos in 3D.
  • 2010 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony introduces the Move wand-like motion-sensitive controller for the PlayStation 3.

Swedish history:

  • 1626 - A Swedish fleet of about 125 vessels and 14,000 men land near Pillau, and begin an attack on Prussia.
  • 2001 - A European Union Summit meeting is held in Göteborg, over three days. Protesters from several nations ransack the city, causing damage of about 400 million kronor. 600 demonstrators are taken into custody, with over 50 charged with offences.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1975 - Gordon Hunter, master of the Royal Canadian Mint, retires.

USA coin history:

  • 1915 - The San Francisco Mint makes a ceremonial striking of 100 octagonal Panama-Pacific International Exposition gold $50 coins.
  • 1933 - Congress authorizes Texas Independence Centennial commemorative half dollar program, up to 1.5 million coins.
  • 1950 - Abe Kosoff of Numismatic Gallery conducts the Adolphe Menjou collection of coins formed by Charles M. Williams in Los Angeles. A unique 1873-CC dime without arrows sells for high bid of $3650.
  • 1972 - The ANA Certification Service opens for business, offering to certify the authenticity of submitted coins.
  • 2022 - The US Senate votes to approve Deputy US Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson as Mint Director for a five-year term.

Sports history:

  • 1869 - Mike McCoole (US) defeats Tom Allen (England) in bare-knuckle bout.
  • 1894 - Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati Reds, 21-8.
  • 1902 - Justin Clark of Corsicana, Texas minors hits 8 home runs in one game.
  • 1918 - 50th running of Belmont Stakes (Johren wins).
  • 1938 - First night game at Brooklyn Ebbets Field (Cincinnati Reds 6, Brooklyn Dodgers 0) as Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second consecutive no hitter.
  • 1947 - First night game at Detroit Briggs Stadium (Detroit Tigers 4, Philadelphia Athletics 1).
  • 1951 - Joe Louis scores his last knock-out victory.
  • 1957 - New York Yankees trade Billy Martin and Ralph Terry for Ryne Duran.
  • 1962 - Philadelphia Phillies score ten runs in an inning against Cincinnati Reds en route to 13-8 win.
  • 1963 - San Francisco Giants' Juan Marichal no-hits Houston Colt 45s, 1-0.

  • 1980 - Jorge Orta of Cleveland Indians gets six hits in a baseball game.
  • 1984 - Thomas Hearns knocks out Roberto Duran.
  • 1989 - Baltimore Orioles pull their 9th triple play (versus New York Yankees).
  • 2001 - The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers 4-1 to win their second straight NBA Title. They also finish with the best overall record in playoff history, 15-1.
  • 2003 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets to win the 2003 NBA Finals, 4-2.
  • 2004 - The Detroit Pistons upset the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2004 NBA Finals, four games to one.
  • 2022 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL Stanley Cup Final, game 1: Colorado Avalanche beats Tampa Bay Lightning by score 4-3, leading series 1-0.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 4-1.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Colorado Rockies by score 7-5.

  • 1846 - The dispute between the US and Great Britain over the Oregon country is settled by treaty, establishing the boundary at the 49th parallel.
  • 1851 - Jacob Fussell, Baltimore dairyman, sets up first ice-cream factory.
  • 1859 - On San Juan Island, south of Vancouver Island, an area of border dispute between the USA and British Columbia, an American farmer shoots an invading pig in his garden.
  • 1860 - First White settlement in Idaho (Franklin).
  • 1864 - Battle for Petersburg begins as General Ulysses Grant assaults Confederate line.
  • 1864 - Robert E Lee's home area (Arlington, Virginia) becomes a military cemetery.
  • 1896 - Off Sanriku, Japan, a magnitude 8.5 earthquake occurs. 28,000 people are killed and 170 miles of coastline are destroyed by the resulting 25-metre (80-foot) tsunami. In Hawaii, wharves are demolished. In California, a 9.5-foot wave is observed.
  • 1904 - Side-wheeler ship General Slocum burns in New York's East River (1,031 die).
  • 1915 - US government mints first $50 gold coins, for Panama Pacific Expo.

  • 1999 - George Morber Senior and Carolyn Frederick are murdered by Angel Maturino Resendiz in Gorham, Illinois (his 8th and 9th victims, in his 7th and final incident).

  • 1991 - Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupts for nine hours, discharging 15-30 millions of tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Within two hours, the ash plume reaches 34 km high. The aerosol cloud reaches around the planet.
