Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Apple Computer announces 1200 job layoffs, one-fifth of the company.
  • 1999 - Intel releases first processors made with 0.18 micron manufacturing process, 400 MHz Pentium II and Celeron processors.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US.
    • A character accesses the Internet on a personal computer.
    • The software says "You've got nothing!", and later "You've got tons of mail!", and "You've got committment!", references to America Online software's "You've got mail!" message.

  • 2008 - In London, England, David and Richard Darling are made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for their "services to the computer games industry". The brothers co-founded Galactic Software in 1982, and co-founded Codemasters in 1986.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - A theater in Los Angeles previews the 55th Alice Comedy film, Alice the Beach Nut.
  • 1958 - The Sailing Ship Columbia attraction opens in Disneyland. It is a full-scale replica of the original Columbia, the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, in 1787. Disney's ship cost US$300,000 to build.
  • 1958 - The dock in Frontierland along the southwest side of the Rivers of America is named Fowler's Harbor.
  • 1958 - The Alice in Wonderland ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1959 - The Disneyland monorail trains are first hoisted by crane onto their track.
  • 1959 - The Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System begins operation in Tomorrowland at Disneyland. It represents the first urban monorail system in the USA. US Vice President Richard Nixon helps with the dedication.
  • 1959 - The Matterhorn Mountain with its Matterhorn Bobsleds ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland. It is the first thrill ride at Disneyland, and the first ride to use cylindrical rails and urethane wheels. The mountain is 147 feet high, 1/100th the height of the real Matterhorn mountain, and uses 2175 steel girders. Final cost of the attraction is US$1.5 million. First riders are Walt Disney, his family, and US Vice President Richard Nixon.
  • 1959 - The Submarine Voyage attraction at Disneyland is officially dedicated.
  • 1971 - The All American College Band first performs at Disneyland.
  • 1974 - The Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue opens in Pioneer Hall at Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World, as a summer workshop program.
  • 1975 - The America on Parade parade begins in Disneyland.
  • 1985 - The Card Corner shop opens on Main Street at Disneyland, sponsored by Gibson Greetings.
  • 1994 - The ABC TV network airs The Lion King: A Musical Journey.
  • 1997 - The animated feature film Hercules world premieres at the New Amsterdam theater in Times Square, in New York City.
  • 1999 - The fifth and final "Disneyland" marquee is removed, to make room for an expanded Disneyland Resort.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1969 - In France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held. The Swiss racing team of Georges Filipinetti enters two 1968 Corvette L-88s. The Scuderia Filipinetti #1 Corvette driven by Henri Greder and Reine Wisell leads the GT class until the transmission dies after 15 hours.
  • 1975 - In Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days. Alain Cudini and Henri Greder race the Henri Greder #42 Corvette until an oil pump failure puts them out of the race.
  • 1981 - At the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, the G.I. Joe's Rose Cup / CRC Chemicals Trans-Am Championship - Round 2 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Swiss Chalet #94 Corvette, driven by Eppie Wietzes.
    • Finishing 5th is the B.C. Auto Body #41 Corvette, driven by Bill Craine.
    • Finishing 13th is The Last Hurrah #71 Corvette, driven by Jeff Weymouth.
    • Finishing 14th is the Peter Shutts #72 Corvette, driven by Peter Shutts.
    • Finishing 18th is the #83 Corvette, driven by Earl Pearson.
    • In 24th place, but not finishing the race, is the #9 Corvette, driven by Jerry Brassfield.
    • In 25th place, but not finishing the race, is the Diablo #92 Corvette, driven by Ron Maccario.
    • Finishing 28th is the FEMSA/Clausie #91 Corvette, driven by Gene Bothello.
    • In 29th place, but not finishing the race, is the #3 Corvette, driven by Tony Brassfield.
    • In 31st place, but not finishing the race, is the Full-Time #99 Corvette, driven by Phil Currin.
    • In 33rd place, but not finishing the race, is the #73 Corvette, driven by Dan Pearson.

  • 1993 - Corvette program manager Russ McLean and chief engineer Dave Hill meet with the General Motors Strategy Board, including General Motors' president John Smith, to get approval for Concept Initiation of the 1997 Corvette program. The plan is approved.
  • 2007 - (to June 17) At the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold Corvette show is held. Mecum High Performance Auctions conducts the auction. Some sales:
    • 1955 Pennant Blue: $170,000;
    • 1957 Venetian Red 283-ci 283-hp fuel-injected engine, 4-speed transmission: $150,000;
    • 1963 Riverside Red coupe, 327-ci 360-hp fuel-injected engine: $133000;
    • 1967 black convertible, hardtop, 427-ci 435-hp engine, optional wheels, side exhausts, 28,000 miles: $445,000.

  • 2008 - (to June 15) At the Circuit de la Sarthe in France, the 76th 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class is the #63 Corvette C6-R driven by Jan Magnussen, Johnny O'Connell, and Ron Fellows.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class is the #64 Corvette C6-R driven by Olivier Beretta, Oliver Gavin, and Max Papis.
    • Finishing 5th in GT1 class is the #72 Corvette C6-R driven by Alphand, Moreau, and Policand.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - German forces cross the Maginot Line into France.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 15, ordering the Army to prevent the withdrawal of enemy forces from the Paris area, and prevent the establishment of a new front on the lower Seine. A second objective is to destroy forces facing Army Groups A and C, and see to the collapse of the Maginot Line.
  • 1940 - Paris is evacuated, as German troops enter the city.
  • 1940 - Soviet Premier Josef Stalin sends an ultimatum to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, making territorial demands.
  • 1940 - In Brest, France, British General Alan Brooke orders Canadian forces to withdraw from France. Much of the Canadian equipment and 216 vehicles are destroyed, to prevent their use by German forces.
  • 1940 - Spain sends a 3,000-man force to occupy the former international city of Tangier, a port of Morocco.
  • 1942 - (0030 hours) The Royal Navy's Second Support Group of six fast modern sloops/destroyers, commanded by Johnnie Walker, complete a battle sinking German submarine U-202 in the Bay of Biscay.
  • 1942 - (morning) Allies withdraw from the Gazala line in North Africa.
  • 1944 - French General Charles de Gaulle debarks at Courseulles, France, ready to take control of a Provisional Government of France.
  • 1944 - 221 British Lancaster bombers attack Le Havre, France, killing about 1000 German sailors, and inflicting much damage to naval craft. This is Bomber Command's first major daylight raid since May 1943.
  • 1944 - (evening) 337 British heavy bombers attack German troops and vehicles at Aunay and Evreay.
  • 1945 - German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop is arrested by British in Hamburg.
  • 1952 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 10th anniversary of the defense of Bir-Hacheim.
  • 1985 - Philippines issues a postage stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Bessang Pass.

Video game history:

  • 1974 - Paramount Pictures releases the film The Parallax View in the USA. The arcade game Pong appears.
  • 1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat 3 video game for the PlayStation in Japan.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A character plays a "CosBox" video game system hooked up to a television.
  • 2004 - Midway releases the Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Killer 7 video game for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube in the US.
  • 2010 - Microsoft reveals final details of its Xbox 360 hands-free motion control system, called Kinect, with facial and voice recogmition capabilities. Code name during development was Project Natal.
  • 2011 - 2K Games releases the Duke Nukem Forever video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1853 - The Currency Act, 1853, receives royal assent, allowing coins in denominations of dollars and cents to be struck for Canada, as well as shillings and pence.
  • 1983 - In Walden, Ontario, Inco's Canadian Alloys rolling mill plant begins producing 25c blanks for use by the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • 1985 - The House of Commons Standing Committee on Miscellaneous Estimates recommends that the government issue a new circulating dollar coin, and withdraw the one dollar bank note. The new coin should be 11-sided, 26.5-mm diameter, weigh 7-grams, and be yellow-gold in color. The one dollar note should be withdrawn over a three-year period.

USA coin history:

  • 2011 - The US Mint launches the 2011 Olympic National Park quarter dollar in Port Angeles, Washington.

Sports history:

  • 1870 - All-pro Cincinnati Red Stockings suffer first loss in 130 games.
  • 1876 - Philadelphia Athletics' George Hall becomes first major league baseball player to hit for the cycle.
  • 1934 - Max Baer knocks out Primo Carnera in 11 rounds for heavyweight boxing championship in Long Island City.
  • 1953 - New York Yankees sweep Cleveland Indians 6-2, 3-0 before 74,708; win streak at 18 straight.
  • 1965 - Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Jim Maloney no-hits New York Mets but loses in 11, 1-0.
  • 1970 - Cincinnati Red Stockings loses first game after winning 130 straight.
  • 1976 - 12th Mayor's Trophy Game: New York Yankees beat New York Mets 8-4.
  • 1978 - Down 9-7 in 10th with two outs, New York Yankees Paul Blair hits a three-run home run.
  • 1987 - Los Angeles Lakers win NBA title with a 106-93, victory over the Boston Celtics.
  • 1989 - Nolan Ryan becomes second pitcher to defeat all 26 teams.
  • 1989 - Detroit Pistons sweep Los Angeles Lakers for NBA title, Kareem Abdul Jabber's final NBA game.
  • 1990 - Detroit Pistons beat Portland Trail Blazers, four games to one for NBA championship.
  • 1991 - Leroy Burrell of USA sets the 100m record (9.90) in New York City.
  • 1992 - The Chicago Bulls win their second NBA championship by defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in the best-of-seven series four games to two.
  • 1994 - The New York Rangers defeat the Vancouver Canucks at Madison Square Garden in New York in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in 54 years.
  • 1996 - Cal Ripken sets a new consecutive games world record by playing in his 2,216th consecutive baseball game.
  • 1998 - The Chicago Bulls win their 6th NBA title in 8 years when they beat the Utah Jazz, 87-86 in Game Six. This is also Michael Jordan's last game as a Chicago Bulls player.
  • 2005 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners becomes the third fastest major league player to reach the 1000-hit mark, in his 696th game. Suzuki also holds the record in Japan for being quickest player to attain a 1,000 hits, in his first 757 games.
  • 2007 - The San Antonio Spurs sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the 2007 NBA Finals.
  • 2009 - In Catalunya, Spain, round 6 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.
  • 2009 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Orlando Magic 99-86 to win their 15th NBA championship in five games. Lakers coach Phil Jackson wins his record 10th title.
  • 2009 - Three-time heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis is inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Lewis retired in 2003 with a record of 41-2-1, including 32 knockouts.
  • 2009 - In Greece, round 7 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Mikko Hirvonen.
  • 2009 - Anna Nordqvist finishes at 15-under-par 273 to win the LPGA Championship in Havre de Grace, Maryland, USA.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Minnesota Twins by score 5-0.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Kansas City Royals by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cincinnati Reds beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Colorado Rockies by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Chicago Cubs by score 12-5.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Texas Rangers by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 9-1. Yadier Molina breaks the record for most putouts by a catcher, 14,685, breaking the record held by Ivan Rodriguez.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats Oakland Athletics by score 6-1.
  • 2022 - At Citi Field in New York City, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 4-0.
  • 2022 - At Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago White Sox beats Detroit Tigers by score 5-1.

USA history:

  • 1775 - The Continental Congress adopts the New England army as the Continental Army, and votes to raise ten companies of riflemen.
  • 1777 - The American Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that "the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white" and that "the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
  • 1834 - Hardhat diving suit patented by Leonard Norcross, of Dixfield, Maine, USA.
  • 1834 - Sandpaper patented by Isaac Fischer Junior, in Springfield, Vermont, USA.
  • 1850 - Fire destroys part of San Francisco.
  • 1863 - Battle of second Winchester, Virginia.
  • 1864 - Battle of Pine Mount, General Leonidas Polk is killed in action.
  • 1877 - In the USA, the first Flag Day observance is held on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes.
  • 1881 - Player piano is patented in USA by John McTammany, Junior, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • 1917 - US General John Pershing and his headquarters staff arrive in Paris, France.
  • 1922 - US President Warren Harding is first US president to use radio, dedicating the Francis Scott Key memorial in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • 1923 - Ralph Peer of Okeh Records records Fiddlin' John Carson doing "The Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane", the beginning of the country music recording industry.
  • 1928 - Republican National Convention in Kansas City nominates Herbert Hoover for US President.
  • 1941 - Ground broken for Boeing Plant II (ex-AFLC Plant 13) Wichita, Kansas.
  • 1942 - First bazooka rocket gun produced, in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
  • 1951 - First commercial computer, Reminton Rand UNIVAC 1, enters service at US Census Bureau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1952 - Keel laid for first nuclear powered submarine the USS Nautilus.
  • 1954 - US President Dwight Eisenhower signs order adding words "under God" to the Pledge.

  • 1989 - Ground-breaking begins in Minnesota on the world's largest mall.
  • 2008 - The space shuttle Discovery returns to Earth after a 14-day mission, landing at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Among the returning is Garrett Reisman, after 95 days in space.
  • 2020 - The US Supreme Court rules 6-3 on Bostock v. Clayton County that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits firing workers on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • 2022 - New York's highest court rules an elephant is not legally considered a person.

  • 1841 - First Canadian parliament opens in Kingston, Ontario.
  • 1982 - Argentina surrenders to Britain on Falkland Island, ending 74-day conflict.
