Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Garden is released to theaters.
  • 1957 - The Monsanto House of the Future attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1975 - The Walt Disney Story Featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction opens in the Main Street Opera House at Disneyland.
  • 1984 - Roy Disney reports that he now owns 5 percent of Disney stock.
  • 1993 - Four restaurants in the Euro Disney Resort begin serving alcohol.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Six Days, Seven Nights to theaters in the USA.
  • 1999 - Disney premieres the animated feature film Tarzan at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.
  • 2001 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? on videocassette and DVD.
  • 2010 - The film Captain EO re-opens at Disneyland Paris.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1952 - Chevrolet's director of research and development, Maurice Olley, creates a sketch for the new sports car frame, showing locations of radiator, wheels, and body mount points.
  • 1971 - In Paris, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held.
    • The Ecurie Léopard #1 1968 L-88 Corvette driven by Jean-Claude Aubriet and Jean-Pierre Rouget runs as high as 1st in GT and 14th overall, but the driveshaft breaks 15 hours into the race.
    • Henri Greder and Marie-Claude Beaumont race the Greder Racing #2 Corvette until the engine fails.

  • 1976 - In Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days. John Greenwood and Bernard Darniche race the IMSA Camel #76 Corvette until a split fuel tank puts them out of the race.
  • 1977 - At the Portland International Raceway, in Portland, Oregon, the G.I. Joe's Rose Cup Trans-Am Championship - Round 3 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 5th overall is the Bryant Kennedy Drilling #91 Corvette 427, driven by Gene Bothello.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 9th overall is the Vic Hubbard / Mocko #31 Corvette 427, driven by David Mock.
    • Finishing 4th in category I and 10th overall is the Vera Carlen #1 Corvette 350, driven by Gary Carlen.
    • Finishing 5th in category I and 11th overall is the El Camino Auto Parts #22 Corvette 427, driven by Bob Matkovich.

  • 1999 - At the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held, over two days. A Corvette C5-R race car is the official pace car.
  • 2004 - In Le Mans, France, the 72nd annual 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class is the #64 Corvette C5-R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Jan Magnussen.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class is the #63 Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Max Papis.

  • 2005 - At Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen race is held, round six of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 14th in GT class and 34th overall is the ASC Motorsports #55 Corvette, driven by Johnny Miller, Zach Arnold, and Jason Workman.
    • Finishing 19th in GT class and 40th overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Buddy Rice, Tommy Riggins, and Michael Baughman.

  • 2021 - At the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix raceway in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race is held, round 4 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 7th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C8.R driven by Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 8th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C8.R driven by Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Siam and Japan sign a non-aggression pact.
  • 1941 - The first Canadian bomber mission is carried out.
  • 1942 - In Canada, the Chemical Warfare Inter-Service Board develops a set of rules governing use of troops in war gas experiments.
  • 1942 - Convoy SC-85 from Canada arrives off Liverpool, England.
  • 1942 - The first full operational rehearsal for the Operation Rutter raid on Dieppe is held, code named Yukon I. The British Navy lands Canadian soldiers on Dorset coast in morning darkness.
  • 1943 - A British Coastal Command Mosquito plane flies a reconnaissance flight over Peenemünde, Germany. Photos show a large rocket lying on a trailer.
  • 1943 - Pantelleria Island off Sicily surrenders.
  • 1944 - The Canadian Queen's Own Rifles enter Les Mesnil-Patry, in France, but lose 17 of 19 tanks and many men.
  • 1944 - American forces make air attacks on Chichi Jima and Iwo Jima.
  • 1944 - (night) Germany launches the first V-1 flying bombs against Britain. From 55 launch sites, seven are able to launch a total of ten flying bombs during the night, of which three reach England. One destroys a railway bridge.
  • 1944 - (evening) 286 British Lancaster and Mosquito bombers attack the Nordstern synthetic oil plant near Gelsenkirchen, Germany. They drop 1500 bombs, inflicting enormous damage, bringing fuel production to a halt. About 18 planes are shot down.
  • 1992 - Philippines issues five postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II in the Philippines.

Video game history:

  • 2008 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2008 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Online video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1969 - A seven-judge panel appointed by the Minister of Finance unanimously agrees on the design for the reverse of the 1970 Manitoba Centennial $1 coin. The winning design was submitted by Raymond Taylor, who receives $3500 for his work. Three awards of $500 each are made for runner-up designs.

USA coin history:

  • 1908 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1908-dated eagles (no motto).

Sports history:

  • 1839 - First baseball game played in America.
  • 1880 - First baseball perfect game-John Richmond of Worcester Ruby Legs beats Cleveland Blues.
  • 1907 - New York Yankees commit 11 errors and lose 14-6 to the Detroit Tigers.
  • 1922 - Saint Louis Browns get record ten hits in a row and beats Philadelphia Phillies 14-8.
  • 1931 - Cricket player Charlie Parker equals J.T. Hearne's record for the earliest date to reach 100 wickets.
  • 1939 - Baseball Hall of Fame opens in Cooperstown, New York.
  • 1947 - Babe Didrikson is first American to win British Women's Amateur Golf Championships.
  • 1948 - Eddie Arcaro becomes first jockey to win the triple crown twice.
  • 1954 - Milwaukee Braves' Jim Wilson no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0.
  • 1957 - Paul Anderson of US back-lifts a record 2850kg (6,270 pounds).
  • 1959 - San Francisco Giants' Mike McCormick no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 3-0 in five-inning game.
  • 1967 - Washington Senators beat Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in 22 innings.
  • 1970 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Dock Ellis no-hits San Diego Padres, 2-0.
  • 1981 - Major League Baseball goes on strike, forcing the cancellation of 38 percent of the schedule.
  • 1989 - Ben Johnson, Canadian Olympian, admits using steroids.
  • 1990 - New York Mets beat Chicago Cubs 19-8 at Wrigley Field; Chicago Cubs outfielder Doug Dazcenzo pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' reliever Dave Righetti becomes 9th to record 200 saves.
  • 1990 - Oakland Athletics' Rickey Henderson becomes second to steal 900 bases.
  • 1991 - The Chicago Bulls win their first NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the best-of-7 series 4 games to 1.
  • 2002 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the New Jersey Nets four games to zero to win the 2002 NBA Finals.
  • 2009 - The Pittsburgh Penguins win the NHL's Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 7.
  • 2014 - (to July 13) The 2014 FIFA World Cup is held in Brazil, and is won by Germany.

  • 1994 - Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman are murdered outside the Simpson home in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1996 - In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a panel of federal judges blocks a law against indecency on the internet. The panel says that the 1996 Communications Decency Act would infringe upon the free speech rights of adults.
  • 1997 - The United States Department of the Treasury unveils a new $50 bill, meant to be more counterfeit-resistant.
  • 1998 - A jury in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, convicts 17-year-old Luke Woodham of killing two students and wounding 7 others at Pearl High School.
  • 1999 - Texas Governor George W. Bush announces he will seek the Republican Party nomination for President of the United States.
  • 2008 - Representative Ron Paul of Texas withdraws his candidacy for President of the US.
  • 2016 - 49 people shot dead in Orlando night club Pulse. Lone suspect Omar Mateen is shot dead by police.
  • 2017 - American student Otto Warmbier returns home in a coma after spending 17 months in a North Korean prison.
  • 2018 - The 2018 North Korea-United States summit is held in Singapore. It is the first summit between a United States President and the North Korean leader.

Other history:

  • 1897 - Possibly most severe earthquake in history strikes Assam India. Estimated magnitude 8 on Richter scale. About 1500 killed.
  • 2008 - A public vote in Ireland on the European Union's Lisbon treaty results in a "no" decision, by 53.4 percent to 46.6. All members of the European Union must ratify the treaty for it to take effect.
