Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - MGM/UA Entertainment releases the film WarGames to theaters in the USA. The main character uses his IMSAI 8080 computer at his house to connect to a mainframe computer by using his phone.
  • 1984 - The Summer Consumer Electronics Show is held, in Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1984 - Commodore International announces the Commodore Plus/4, formerly called the Commodore 264. It will now feature four built-in programs, not just one. Release price should be around US$300.
  • 1984 - Commodore International announces the Commodore 16 at the Consumer Electronics Show. Former name was TED-16. The machine looks like the VIC-20 and Commodore 64, but has 16 kB of RAM, and is expected to sell for around US$100, and marketed as "The Learning Machine".
  • 1984 - At the Summer CES, Commodore International announces the MPS 803 dot matrix printer, designed for use with the Commodore 16.
  • 1984 - At the Summer CES, Commodore announces the DSP 1101 letter-quality daisywheel printer, designed for the Plus/4.
  • 1984 - At the Summer CES, Commodore announces the MPS 802 dot matrix printer.
  • 1984 - At the Summer CES, Commodore shows the 1531 Cassette Unit.
  • 1984 - At the Summer CES, Amiga demonstrates a new computer, code-named "Lorraine".
  • 1993 - Casio introduces the Zoomer personal digital assistant, developed jointly with Tandy. It features 7.4 MHz 8086-compatible processor, 4 MB ROM, 1 MB RAM, GeoWorks Geos operating system, PCMCIA flash memory cards. The system operates for about 100 hours on three AA batteries. Price is US$900.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1924 - Disney ships the Alice Comedy film Alice and the Dog Catcher to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1949 - The Donald Duck film Winter Storage is released. Chip 'n' Dale also appear.
  • 1960 - The Puffin Bakery shop in Disneyland closes.
  • 1964 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film The Three Lives of Thomasina to theaters. The film is based on the book Thomasina by Paul Gallico.
  • 1980 - Donn Tatum retires as chairman and chief executive officer of Walt Disney Productions, becoming chairman of the executive committee.
  • 1980 - Card Walker is elected chairman of Walt Disney Productions.
  • 1980 - Card Walker names Ron Miller as president and chief operating officer of Walt Disney Productions.
  • 1980 - Walt Disney Productions announces the creation of new divisions: Walt Disney Motion Picture and Television Production Division, Walt Disney Outdoor Recreation Division, and Walt Disney Marketing Division.
  • 1984 - The Bistro de Paris restaurant opens in the France Pavillion in World Showcase in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film Looking for Miracles in the USA.
  • 1990 - The Fine Tobacco shop on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland closes.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Renaissance Man to theaters.
  • 1996 - Disney premieres the film The Rock on Alcatraz Island.
  • 1996 - The Lifetime TV network premieres the Debt TV show.
  • 2001 - The Disney Channel commences the third season of the Bug Juice TV show.
  • 2001 - Disney premieres the film Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California.
  • 2003 - At the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, Disney premieres the film Destino.
  • 2007 - The Lifetime TV network premieres the ABC Studios TV show Army Wives.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1962 - At Bridgehampton, an SCCA race for A-, B-, and C-production classes is held.
    • Finishing 1st in A-Production class and 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Richard Thompson.
    • Finishing 2nd in A-Production class and 2nd overall is the Corvette driven by Robert Ryan Brown.
    • Finishing 3rd in A-Production class and 3rd overall is the Corvette driven by Frank Dominianni.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 6th overall is the Corvette driven by Don Yenko.

  • 1979 - At the Westwood Motorsports Park in British Columbia, Canada, the Trans-Am Championship - Round 2 race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in category I and 5th overall is the #92 Corvette 427, driven by Gary Carlen.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 6th overall is the FEMSA/Kennedy #91 Corvette, driven by Gene Bothello.
    • In 5th place in category II and 7th place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Automotive Enterprise #27 Corvette, driven by Rich Sloma.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 8th overall is the Round Table Racing #14 Corvette, driven by Peter Brallier.

  • 2006 - At the Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen race is held, round nine of the Grand American Rolex Series.
    • Finishing 15th in GT class and 37th overall is the Banner Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Tim Gaffney, Leighton Reese, and Randy Tolsma.
    • Finishing 16th in GT class and 38th overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Michael Baughman.
    • Finishing 20th in GT class and 45th overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Vic Rice, Tommy Riggins, and Dominic Cicero II.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - British Winston Churchill writes in Collier's magazine: "Unless some change of heart or change of regime takes place in Germany she will deem it in her interest to make war, and this is more likely to happen in the present year than later on."
  • 1940 - Norwegian foreign minister Halvdan Koht and Swedish foreign minister Christian Günther sign an agreement at Luleå, for Sweden to take control of the Narvik area of Norway with the withdrawal of Norwegian and German troops. The plan had the approval of Germany's Hermann Göring and the British government.
  • 1940 - German forces in France move south toward Paris.
  • 1942 - (0904 hours) Ensign Jack Reid, flying a PBY Catalina flying boat out of Midway, spots three Japanese ships about 470 miles from Midway. He reports this to Midway.
  • 1942 - (0925 hours) An American air patrol 700 miles west of Midway spots the main body of Japanese ships.
  • 1942 - (1040 hours) An American air patrol pilot reports sighting six large ships west of Midway Islands.
  • 1942 - (1100 hours) An American air patrol pilot reports sighting eleven ships west of Midway Islands, headed east.
  • 1942 - Two Japanese aircraft carriers in Alaskan waters launch planes against Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands.
  • 1942 - Canadian Prime Minister William King coments in his diary that "BC [British Columbia] is pretty much today as Singapore", referring to vulnerability to Japanese attack.
  • 1942 - (1230 hours) Nine American B-17 bombers, each with four 600-pound bombs, take off from Midway to bomb approaching Japanese ships.
  • 1942 - (1600 hours) Nine American B-17 bombers from Midway attack Japanese ships 570 miles from Midway, but score no hits.
  • 1942 - (2030-2145 hours) American B-17 bombers return to base on Midway Island.
  • 1942 - (2115 hours) Four PBY Catalinas are launched from Midway, equipped with torpedoes.
  • 1942 - (evening) 170 British aircraft attack Bremen, doing heavy damage to the town and docks.
  • 1944 - Dwight Eisenhower briefs French general Charles de Gaulle on Operation Overlord, the first De Gaulle has heard of it.
  • 1944 - (evening) 135 British bombers attack coastal gun batteries at Wimereux and Calais in France.
  • 1961 - In Ottawa, Canada, a memorial is unveiled recording the names of 128 Canadian officers who died while serving voluntarily with British forces in 1944-45.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - MGM/UA Entertainment releases the film WarGames to theaters in the USA. A scene takes place in an arcade; Galaga is prominently featured, and we also see Ms. Pac-Man.
  • 1990 - Nintendo sues Lewis Galoob Toys to try to prevent the Game Genie from being sold.
  • 1993 - In Chicago, Illinois, the 1993 International Summer Consumer Electronics Show is held, over four days. Nintendo unveils a new configuration Nintendo Entertainment System, with top-loading cartridge slot. Price is US$49.95, including one Controller.
  • 1994 - Acclaim releases the Mortal Kombat video game for the Sega CD in Japan.
  • 2008 - Codemasters releases the Grid video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1940 - Norwegian foreign minister Halvdan Koht and Swedish foreign minister Christian Günther sign an agreement at Luleå, for Sweden to take control of the Narvik area of Norway with the withdrawal of Norwegian and German troops. Canadian coin history:

  • 1963 - Chester Krause of Wisconsin publishes the first issue of Canada Coin News newspaper, edited by Cale B. Jarvis.
  • 1968 - The Finance Minister announces the replacement of silver in coins with nickel, beginning in August.

USA coin history:

  • 1936 - Gilroy Roberts begins work at the US Mint as assistant engraver.
  • 1965 - US President Lyndon Johnson proposes to Congress to authorize replacing silver in circulation coins with cheaper base metals.
  • 2004 - Heritage Auction Galleries sells at public auction a US 1856-O Coronet double eagle gold coin Proof for US$542,800.
  • 2010 - The US Mint officially launches the 2010 Yellowstone National Park quarter at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.
  • 2010 - Heritage Numismatic Auctions sells a 1944-D Lincoln cent struck on zinc-plated steel planchet graded AU-55 by NGC for US$60,375.

Sports history:

  • 1888 - Casey at the Bat is published in the San Francisco Examiner.
  • 1932 - Lou Gehrig hits four consecutive home runs; New York Yankees beat Philadelphia Athletics 20-13.
  • 1933 - Philadelphia Athletics score 11 runs in 2nd inning, New York Yankees score 10 in 5th and win 17-11.
  • 1968 - New York Yankees turn 21st triple-play in their history, but lose 4-3 to Minnesota Twins.
  • 1971 - Chicago Cubs' Ken Holtzman second no-hitter beats Cincinnati Reds, 1-0.
  • 1972 - New York Yankees score eight times in 13th beating Chicago White Sox 18-10.
  • 1977 - Baltimore Orioles pull their 6th triple play (9-6-4-6-6 versus Kansas City Royals).
  • 1980 - ESPN begins televising college World Series games.
  • 1984 - Patty Shoehan wins LPGA by a record 10 strokes.
  • 1987 - Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros tie Baltimore Orioles' and Texas Rangers' record of three grand slams in a game.
  • 1989 - Houston Astros beat Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, in 22 innings (7:14:09).
  • 2017 - At the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race is held, round 5 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 #10 Cadillac DPi driven by Jordan Taylor and Ricky Taylor.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype Challenge class and 8th overall is the Performance Tech Motorsports #38 ORECA FLM09 driven by Patricio O'Ward and James French.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 11th overall is the Meyer Shank Racing #93 Acura NSX GT3 driven by Andy Lally and Katherine Legge.

  • 1921 - A sudden cloudburst kills 120 near Pikes Peak, Colorado, USA.
  • 1980 - A series of deadly tornadoes strikes Grand Island, Nebraska, causing over $300m in damage, killing 5 people and injuring over 250.

USA history:

  • 1775 - The Continental Congress approves the first domestic loan.
  • 1781 - Jack Jouett rides to warn Thomas Jefferson of British attack.
  • 1847 - The first US postage stamps are delivered to the post Office Department in Washington DC.
  • 1861 - First land battle of the War Between the States: USA defeats Confederacy at Philippi, Virginia.
  • 1888 - Casey at the Bat is published in the San Francisco Examiner.
  • 1889 - The first long-distance electric power transmission line in the United States is completed, running 14 miles between a generator at Willamette Falls and downtown Portland, Oregon.
  • 1916 - Reserve Officers' Training Corps is established by Act of US Congress.
  • 1918 - US Supreme Court rules child labor laws unconstitutional.

  • 1965 - Gemini 4 launched; second US two-man flight (McDivitt and White).
  • 1965 - US President Lyndon Johnson proposes to Congress to authorize replacing silver in circulation coins with cheaper base metals.
  • 1966 - Gemini 9 launched; 7th US two-man flight (Stafford and Cernan).
  • 1976 - US presented with oldest known copy of Magna Carta.
  • 1980 - U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy wins several primaries, including California, on 'Super Tuesday', but not enough to overtake President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic Party nomination. Jimmy Carter wins enough delegates for renomination as US President.
  • 1980 - A series of deadly tornadoes strikes Grand Island, Nebraska, causing over $300m in damage, killing 5 people and injuring over 250.
  • 2004 - Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet tenders his resignation, citing "personal reasons". John E. McLaughlin, US Central Intelligence Agency Deputy Director, becomes the acting Director until a permanent Director is chosen and confirmed by Congress.
  • 2008 - US Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama wins the support of a group of uncommitted delegates, giving him more than the required 2118 to win the party's nomination.
  • 2019 - (to June 5) U.S. President Donald Trump makes a state visit to the United Kingdom, meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May. Trump also attends D-Day commemorative ceremonies.
  • 2020 - SpaceX successfully launches and deploys 60 Starlink satellites into a low Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, bringing the total number of Starlink satellites in orbit to 482.

Other history:

  • 2006 - Montenegro declares independence after a May 21 referendum. The state union of Serbia and Montenegro is dissolved on June 5 leaving Serbia as the successor state.
