Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1979 - Intel introduces the 4.77 MHz 8088 microprocessor. It was created as a stepping stone to the 8086, as it operates on 16 bits internally, but supports an 8-bit data bus, to use existing 8-bit device-controlling chips. It contains 29,000 transistors, using 3-micron technology, and can directly address 1 MB of memory. Speed is 0.33 MIPS.
  • 1983 - Atari announces a consolidation of its home computer and video game divisions into one division.
  • 1986 - The Summer Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held in Chicago.
  • 1993 - U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker rules against Apple Computer in its 63-month legal suit against Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. The judge rules that ninety percent of the elements in Windows are covered by Microsoft's 1985 license from Apple Computer. Apple Computer files an appeal.
  • 1999 - Apple Computer releases the Power Macintosh G3/350, /400, and /450 computers, with updated PowerPC G3 processors. All include Mac OS 8.6.
  • 2004 - Intel releases Pentium 4 mobile processors, models 518 (2.8 GHz), 532 (3.06 GHz), and 538 (3.2 GHz). They feature Hyper-Threading Technology, 1 MB Level 2 cache.
  • 2004 - Intel releases 1.5 GHz Celeron M 340 mobile processor. It features 512 kB Level 2 cache, 400 MHz system bus.
  • 2004 - At the Computex trade show in Taiwan, ATI releases the Radeon X300, X600, and X800 graphics chips. The chips use the high-speed PCI Express data bus to communicate with the main processor.
  • 2004 - Sony announces it will halt production of all Clié devices for the US market for the rest of the year, to re-evaluate the PDA market.
  • 2004 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon 64 3500+, 3700+, and 2.4 GHz 3800+ processors. They feature 512 kB level 2 cache. The processors are manufactured in a 0.13-micron process. Prices are US$500, US$710, and US$720, recpestively, in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2008 - Algeria issues a 15d postage stamp depicting a personal computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1924 - Walt Disney contacts Ubbe Iwwerks in Kansas City, and asks him to come work with him in Hollywood. Ubbe initially turns down the US$40 per week offer, as he is already making US$50 per week at the Kansas City Film Ad company.
  • 1924 - M.J. Winkler Productions releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Fishy Story to theaters.
  • 1934 - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer releases the film Hollywood Party to theaters. An animated Mickey Mouse argues with Jimmy Durante, and plays a piano. This is the first feature film appearance of Mickey Mouse. The film also includes a Disney-animated sequence entitled "The Hot Chocolate Soldier".
  • 1935 - The Ingersoll-Waterbury Company reports that it produced 2.5 million Mickey Mouse watches during its 2-year association with Disney.
  • 1961 - The Disneyland Monorail re-opens, extended to the Disneyland Hotel, crossing over West Street. This extends the line from 0.8 to 2.5 miles. A third train is added. All engines are replaced by Mark II versions.
  • 1981 - The EPCOT Preview Center in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World begins showing the film A Dream Called EPCOT.
  • 1982 - At Walt Disney World, the monorail line is extended from the Ticket and Transportation Center to EPCOT Center.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network resumes airing Small & Frye.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of Zorro and Son. Only five episodes were aired.
  • 1984 - Stanley Gold meets with Ray Watson and Ron Miller to discuss what it would take to get Roy Disney back on the board of directors. Gold proposes that Roy and others be allowed to join the board.
  • 1984 - A Federal court rules in Disney's favor over Reliance Group Holdings, allowing the Arvida purchase to go through.
  • 1987 - The If You Had Wings attraction in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1989 - Typhoon Lagoon water park opens at Walt Disney World, covering 56 acres.
  • 1993 - The Splashdown Photos shop opens at the Splash Mountain exit in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1995 - The Space Mountain: de la Terre à la Lune attraction opens at Disneyland Paris.
  • 2002 - The Journey Into Imagination with Figment attraction re-opens in Epcot Center at Walt Disney World.
  • 2009 - The Treehouse Villas opens at Disney's Sarasota Springs Resort and Spa in Florida, part of Disney's Vacation Club.
  • 2010 - The name of Cinderella's Golden Carrousel in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is changed to Prince Charming Regal Carrousel.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - A car race is held at Lime Rock. Finishing 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Bark Henry.
  • 1975 - At the Pocono International Raceway in Pocono, Pennsylvania, Round 1 of the Purolator SCCA Trans-American Championship series is held. The race was scheduled for May, but was postponed due to weather.
    • Finishing 1st is the CAR Corvette 427, driven by John Greenwood. Greenwood started the race in last place, due to switching drivers since qualifying. Greenwood set a record fastest race lap at 105 mph.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Babe's Garage Corvette 427, driven by Milton Headley.
    • Finishing 4th is the Texas Instruments Corvette 460, driven by Alex Davidson.
    • Finishing 5th is the Panzarella Corvette 427, driven by Frank Panzarella.
    • Finishing 6th is the Schott Corvette 454, driven by Dan Schott.

  • 1981 - Production of Corvettes begins at a new plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The first Corvette is a two-tone Beige over Dark Brown 1981 model. The car is driven by Kentucky Governor John Brown, accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Martha Layne Collins. The second car off the line is given to the National Corvette Museum to raffle off.
  • 1990 - David Browning, David Francis, and Charles Gilbert donate 32.8 acres of land adjacent to the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to the National Corvette Museum.
  • 1991 - The Corvette plant in Bowling Green celebrates its 10th anniversary over four days. About 1800 Corvettes are in attendance. 43,590 people tour the plant. Personalities on hand include Miss America, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Dave McLellan, and Larry Shinoda. The National Corvette Homecoming celebrates the 30th, 20th and 10th year anniversaries, with a display of 88 Corvettes.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - (0500+ hours) Off Dunkirk, France, German aircraft bomb and sink British destroyers Basilisk, Keith, and Havant.
  • 1941 - Evacuation of Crete ends; the remaining 9,000 British and 1,000 Greek soldiers surrender. Total losses of manpower in the fight for the island: British army 12,000; navy 2,000; Greek 5,000; German 6,000.
  • 1941 - The regent Abd al-Ilah is restored to the throne of Iraq.
  • 1941 - The Newfoundland Escort Force is established by the Canadian and British navies, based in St. John's, Newfoundland. Canadian navy ships will escort merchant ships to Iceland, then turn them over to British escorts.
  • 1941 - (evening) German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen takes refuge in Brest harbor, France.
  • 1942 - The Midway garrison is placed on full alert.
  • 1942 - (evening) 956 British aircraft are sent against Essen, Germany. Due to clouds, few bombs hit their targets, but eleven other towns in the Ruhr area are hit.
  • 1943 - (about 1230 hours) German Luftwaffe shoots down British Overseas Airways Corporation Flight 777 airliner en route from Lisbon, Portugal, to London, England.
  • 1944 - German Colonel Claus Count von Stauffenberg is appointed Chief of Staff of the Replacement Army.
  • 1945 - The American Interim Committee recommends using the atomic bomb on Japan without warning.
  • 1945 - In Greece, a court sentences General George Tsolakoglou to death for signing a truce with Germany.
  • 1954 - Italy issues a postage stamp marking the 10th anniversary of the resistance movement.
  • 2004 - Sierra Leone issues 54 postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Video game history:

  • 1981 - Imagic is formed by William Grubb and other former executives of Mattel Electronics and Atari, with US$2 million in venture capital.
  • 1991 - At the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, Illinois, Nintendo announces the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES). The 16-bit system will use new game cartridges, and compact discs using a CD-ROM drive developed with Philips N.V. The system is to be available for sale in September.
  • 1991 - Sega drops the price of the Genesis in the US from $189 to $149.
  • 1998 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Camera in the US. Price is US$49.95.
  • 1998 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Printer in the US. Price is US$59.95.
  • 1999 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Pinball video game for the Game Boy in the US.
  • 2004 - Vivendi Universal releases The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - In Yokohama, Japan, Namco celebrates its 50th anniversary. David Hawksett, science and technology editor at Guinness World Records, presents an official Guinness plaque to Namco founder Masaya Nakamura and "Pac-Man" creator Toru Iwatani. The game was recently listed in the record book as the "most successful coin operated game" in history.
  • 2010 - Sega releases the Alpha Protocol video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1638 - The Council authorizes crown land sales of 200,000 riksdaler to pay for war expenses. In future, the King will have the option to buy it back.
  • 1676 - A Danish-Dutch fleet defeats a Swedish fleet off Öland. The Swedish ship Kronan turns too quickly, keels over, capsizes, explodes, and sinks, killing about 800 on board, with 42 surviving.
  • 1937 - Finland issues a postage stamp marking the 300th anniversary of the colonization of Delaware on the coast of North America by Swedes and Finns.
  • 1988 - Grenada issues two postage stamps depicting a 1955 Volvo PV444, and a 1963 Saab 96.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2000 - In Markham, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Harmony 25c Millenium coin. The design was provided by Haver Demirer.

USA coin history:

  • 1787 - Authority is granted for a New Jersey coinage.
  • 1918 - Congress authorizes the 1918 Illinois Centennial silver half dollar.
  • 1984 - Heritage Capital launches the Numismatic Certification Institute coin grading service.
  • 2010 - The US Mint releases the 2010 Yellowstone National Park quarter dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1918 - New York Yankees turn triple-play, beat Detroit Tigers 5-4.
  • 1923 - New York Giants beat Philadelphia Phillies, 22-5.
  • 1935 - New York Yankees set solo home run record with six, beating Boston Braves 7-2.

  • 2002 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Sacramento Kings 112-106, to win Game 7 of the National Basketball Association's 2002 Western Conference Finals.
  • 2019 - At the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race is held, round 5 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in DPi class and 1st overall is the ACURA TEAM PENSKE #6 Acura DPi driven by Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya.

  • 2008 - A large fire ravages a theme park at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California, destroying a King Kong attraction and a set from the film Back to the Future. Over 300 firefighters fought the blaze.
  • 2008 - At the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles, California, the 17th annual MTV Movie Awards are announced. Some winners:

  • 2009 - American car-maker General Motors files for bankruptcy, the third-largest in U.S. history and the largest ever in U.S. manufacturing. The U.S. government will provide US$30 billion of additional taxpayer funds to restructure.
  • 2009 - New USA requirement goes into effect for passports or other approved identification to be shown at all entry points.
  • 2017 - The U.S. announces its decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement in due time.
