  • 1983 - The Japan Microcomputer Show is held at Ryutsu Center in Tokyo.
  • 1995 - At the Sun World conference in San Francisco, California, Sun Microsystems introduces the Java interactive programming language. Code-name during development was Oak.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A personal computer with flat-panel screen is used to edit a newspaper.
  • 2006 - Microsoft releases a Beta 2 test version of Windows Vista.
  • 2006 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2.8 GHz Athlon 64 FX-62 dual-core processor. It features dual 1 MB L2 cache, dual 128 kB L1 cache, 128-bit DDR2 memory controller, 2 GHz HyperTransport link, and 90 nanometre traces. Price is US$1031 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2006 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2.6 GHz Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor.   • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A personal computer appears briefly.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1922 - Walt Disney incorporates Laugh-O-gram Films, using the remaining assets of Iwwerks-Disney Commercial Artists, and US$15,000 from local investors.
  • 1930 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film Frolicking Fish.
  • 1931 - The Silly Symphony film The China Plate is released to theaters.
  • 1941 - Leaflets appear all over Hollywood denouncing Arthur Babbit, Herb Sorrell, and David Hilberman as communists. The authors are identified only as "Committee of 21".
  • 1982 - The syndicated TV show Computers are People, Too! first airs. It includes footage from the film Tron.
  • 1983 - Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its one-millionth guest.
  • 1983 - The syndicated TV special The Fairest of Them All airs.
  • 1986 - NBC TV airs the special Disneyland's Summer Vacation Party featuring Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld.
  • 1995 - The 100th episode of the Home Improvement TV show airs.
  • 1996 - The Walt Disney Company and McDonald's Corporation sign a 10-year multi-national promotional alliance, set to begin in January 1997.
  • 1997 - The Light Magic Streetacular parade debuts at Disneyland.
  • 1997 - The special TV show "Light Magic: A Spectacular Journey" airs.
  • 2005 - The May 23 issue of Business Week magazine shows the mom and baby superheros from the film The Incredibles in an article about renting DVDs from street kiosk machines.
  • 2006 - Disney releases the film High School Musical on DVD in the US.
  • 2009 - The My Little Princess store opens at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel.
  • 2010 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. The opening chalkboard scene reads "END OF "LOST": IT WAS ALL THE DOG'S DREAM. WATCH US.", referring to the Disney/ABC TV series finale.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1971 - In Charlotte, North Carolina, a 3-hour car race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTO class and 1st overall is the Or Costanzo #57 1969 Corvette L-88 driven by Dave Heinz and Or Costanzo.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 7th overall is the #27 Corvette driven by Jim Glazier and Don Haines.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTO class and 13th overall is the #51 Corvette driven by Mike Robbins and John Finger.

  • 2004 - At the Mont-Tremblant raceway in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, the Six Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant race is held, round four of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 3rd in SGS class and 22nd overall is the Powell Motorsport #07 Corvette, driven by Marc-Antoine Camirand and Normand Guidon.
    • Finishing 8th in SGS class and 29th overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Ted Martin, Gary St. Amour, and Mike Yeakle.

  • 2010 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A 1967 red Corvette coupe appears at a car show.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - German Chancellor Adolf Hitler informs his generals of his decision to attack Poland at the first available opportunity. Hitler tells commanders regarding Poland "We cannot expect a repetition of the Czech affair. There will be war."
  • 1940 - (about 0830 hours) German Ju87 Stuka planes attack and sink British destroyer Kashmir during the Battle of Crete.
  • 1940 - (about 0900 hours) British destroyer Kelly is sunk during the Battle of Crete.
  • 1940 - Boulogne, France, falls to German troops.
  • 1940 - German forces set siege to Calais, France.
  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 30: Middle East. Hitler orders support of Iraq against British forces.
  • 1941 - (1200 hours) The battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen enter the Denmark Strait.
  • 1941 - (1922 hours) British cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk sight the battleship Bismarck and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in the Denmark Strait between Iceland minefields and pack-ice of Greenland. Bismarck opens fire on the Norfolk, which escapes. The British trail the German ships with the help of radar.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-752 under commander Karl-Ernst Schroeter is lost with 29 dead of 46 crew.
  • 1943 - (evening) 826 British bombers attack Dortmund, Germany. This attack and the prior one on May 4 destroy over 3000 buildings and kill 1300 people.
  • 1944 - (0459 hours) In Italy, the 1st Canadian Corps begins an attack on the Hitler Line.
  • 1944 - (0630 hours) In Italy, American 3rd Division forces at Anzio break out of German encirclement, and launch a drive on Rome.
  • 1944 - (morning) In Italy, the Carleton and York Regiment of the 1st Canadian Division, with the 25th British Tank Brigade, break through the Hitler Line, one kilometre south of Aquino. Tanks of the Canadian 5th Armoured Division race through the breach toward the Melfa River.
  • 1944 - In Italy, the West Nova Scotia and Royal 22nd regiments of the Canadian 1st Division drive nearly a mile through the Hitler Line, reporting that they have met their division's final objective.
  • 1944 - (1230+ hours) German forces in Italy counterattack the American breakout from Anzio, with eight Tiger tanks.
  • 1944 - (2100 hours) The German counterattack on Americans from Anzio, Italy, is broken up.
  • 1945 - (early) British forces surround Glücksburg, and take Albert Speer prisoner.
  • 1945 - At Flensburg, Germany, the German government of Karl Dönitz is arrested.
  • 1945 - Heinrich Himmler bites a cyanide capsule during examination by a British army doctor and dies.

Video game history:

  • 1989 - NEC Home Electronics announces it will begin selling a new home video game system in the fall, for about US$200.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A brief scene takes place in a video game arcade.
  • 2006 - Majesco releases the Jaws Unleashed video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2006 - Eidos releases the Rogue Trooper video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2010 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario Galaxy 2 video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1878 - Stockholm University opens.
  • 1996 - Swede Göran Kropp reaches the summit of Mt. Everest. He is the first to do so without oxygen bottle or sherpa guide.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1901 - The Ottawa Mint Act receives Royal Assent, with the signing of the Governor General of Canada.

USA coin history:

  • 1857 - The chief coiner of the Philadelphia Mint delivers the first batch of small cents, 2.8 million pieces.
  • 1883 - T. Harrison Garrett purchases the O.H. Berg specimen of the 1804 Draped Bust dollar from John W. Haseltine for $765.
  • 1916 - US Mint Director Robert W. Woolley notifies Hermon Atkins MacNeil that his designs have been accepted for the quarter dollar.
  • 1990 - A Gallup Poll shows that 62 percent of Americans want to retain the Lincoln cent in circulation.
  • 2003 - US coin dealer Paul Montgomery announces a $1 million bounty for the missing 1913 Liberty Head nickel.

Sports history:

  • 1876 - First National League no-hitter (Joe Borden, Boston Red Stockings).
  • 1883 - 9th Kentucky Derby: William Donohue aboard Leonatus wins in 2:43.
  • 1884 - 12th Preakness: S Fisher aboard Knight of Ellerslie wins in 2:39.5.
  • 1901 - 35th Belmont Stakes: H Spencer aboard Commando wins in 2:21.
  • 1922 - Harry Greb gives Gene Tunney his only professional boxing defeat.
  • 1926 - Hack Wilson is first to hit a homerun off Chicago's Wrigley Field scoreboard.
  • 1941 - Joe Louis beats Buddy Baer on disqualification in 7 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1941 - Rudolf Harbig runs world record 1000m (2:21.5).
  • 1944 - Polo Grounds host first New York City night game since 1941.
  • 1948 - Joe DiMaggio hits three consecutive homeruns.
  • 1953 - 79th Preakness: Eric Guerin aboard Native Dancer wins in 1:57.8.
  • 1962 - Joe Pepitone is second New York Yankees player to hit two homeruns in one inning (Joe DiMaggio was first).
  • 1963 - NBC purchases 1963 AFL championship game TV rights for US$926,000.
  • 1964 - Dale Greig runs female marathon world record (3:27:45).
  • 1965 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Dallas Civitan Golf Open.
  • 1968 - AC Milan wins 8th Europe Cup II in Rotterdam.
  • 1970 - San Diego Padres beat San Francisco Giants 17-16 in 15 innings.
  • 1971 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Suzuki Golf Internationalionale.
  • 1976 - Amy Alcott wins '76 LPGA Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - American League approves transfer of Boston Red Sox to Jean Yawkey for US$15 million.
  • 1979 - First edition of Wisden Cricket Monthly.
  • 1979 - Borussia Mönchengladbach wins 8th UEFA Cup at Düsseldorf.
  • 1980 - ABC Masters Bowling Tournament won by Neil Burton.
  • 1982 - Cathy Morse wins LPGA Chrysler-Plymouth Charity Golf Classic.
  • 1984 - Detroit Tigers win 16th straight road game, tying American League record.
  • 1984 - Anderlecht wins 13th UEFA Cup at London, England.
  • 1990 - A C Milan wins 35th Europe Cup 1 at Vienna, Austria.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees hit six homeruns to beat Minnesota Twins 12-0.
  • 1991 - Philadelphia Phillies' Tommy Greene no-hits Montreal Expos, 2-0.
  • 1991 - San Diego Sockers win fourth consecutive Major Soccer League championship.
  • 1992 - New York Yankees play in their fourth straight extra inning game.
  • 1993 - Val Skinner wins LPGA Lady Keystone Golf Open.
  • 1999 - Canadian professional wrestler Owen Hart dies after falling 90 feet as he was being lowered into the ring for the "Over the Edge" sports entertainment event in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • 2001 - Bayern München wins the UEFA Champions League.
  • 2002 - Irish Football Captain Roy Keane is sent home from the Training Camp in Saipan by Manager Mick McCarthy, after an argument over training arrangements.
  • 2007 - A.C. Milan beats Liverpool F.C. 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League 2006-07 final at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.
  • 2010 - The Czech Republic hockey teams wins gold in Cologne, Germany, with a 2-1 win over Russia in the final of the IIHF World Hockey Championship. Sweden defeats Germany 3-1 for the bronze medal.
  • 2022 - At Enterprise Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, NHL Western Conference 2nd Round, game 4: Colorado Avalanche beats Saint Louis Blues by score 6-3, leading series 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL Eastern Conference 2nd Round, game 4: Tampa Bay Lightning defeats Florida Panthers by score 2-0, winning series 4-0.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New Yorks Mets beats San Francisco Giants by score 13-3.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Oakland Athletics by score 7-6.

  • 1949 - Federal Republic of [West] Germany proclaimed.
  • 2008 - At a summit in Brazil, the leaders of 12 South American nations sign a treaty creating the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), a regional body aimed at boosting economic and political integration in the region. The Unasur members are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
