Personal computer history:

  • 1973 - At Xerox PARC, Bob Metcalfe invents the Ethernet computer connectivity system, describing in a memo how the technology would work. The name "Ethernet" refers to medium-independent transmission of data packets, and is based on a discredited physical theory of an existing "ether" in space allowing transmission of light rays from the sun to the Earth.
  • 1977 - Pertec buys MITS and the Altair line for US$6 million in stock.
  • 1984 - In Atlanta, Georgia, the Comdex/Spring '84 trade show is held, over four days. About 50,000 people attend.
  • 1984 - At the Comdex trade show, Lotus Development introduces the Framework application for the IBM PC.
  • 1984 - At the Comdex trade show, Hewlett-Packard shows the LaserJet laser printer. It is based on the Canon 300 dpi LBP-CX laser printer. Price is US$3500.
  • 1989 - Compaq Computer introduces the Compaq Deskpro 386/33 computer, models 84, 320, and 650. It features 33 MHz 80386DX processor, 64 KB 33 MHz cache, 2 MB RAM. Prices range from US$10499 to US$17999.
  • 1990 - At the Center City Theater at Columbus Circle in New York, Microsoft introduces and ships Microsoft Windows 3.0. This version allows addressing memory above 640 kB. Microsoft spends US$3 million for opening-day marketing, as part of a US$10 million promotional campaign.
  • 1992 - California Superior Court confirms the arbitror's ruling in the arbitration between Intel and AMD.
  • 1996 - Paramount Pictures releases the film Mission: Impossible to theaters in the USA and Canada. A black laptop computer is used to monitor several video cameras. The Netscape Web browsing software appears on a computer. A white desktop computer appears. A Verbatim 230 MB optical disk is used. A small Apple Computer portable computer is used.
  • 1997 - Adobe Systems ships the Illustrator 7.0 software for Windows and Macintosh in Canada and the US. Price is US$595; upgrade price is US$99.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer announces that it will make its Newton Systems Group a subsidiary company, to market the MessagePad 2000 and eMate 3000, with about 130 Apple employees,
  • 1998 - GT Interactive releases the Unreal game for personal computers in the USA.
  • 2001 - Microsoft releases Windows Media Player 7.1 for the Pocket PC.
  • 2002 - Sun Microsystems announces Solaris 9 operating system.
  • 2005 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Geode LX800 processor, intended for small computers. It operates at 533 MHz, consumes 0.9 watts, includes encryption engine and 2D graphics, and is x86 processor compatible. Price is US$45, including companion chipset.
  • 2006 - Microsoft announces FlexGo, software allowing the use of a computer with a pre-paid card number.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1941 - A consent decree officially dissolves the Federation of Screen Cartoonists.
  • 1942 - The Pluto film The Army Mascot is released to theaters.
  • 1955 - ABC camera crews begin rehearsing every Sunday at Disneyland.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Bluegrass Special.
  • 1984 - After two days of discussions, Disney and Bally Manufacturing executives decide there is nothing they can do to help each other.
  • 1984 - The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department give their approval to Saul Steinberg to increase his holdings of Disney stock to 25 percent.
  • 1986 - Dominica issues five postage stamps featuring Disney characters and stamp collecting.
  • 1986 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters playing baseball.
  • 1986 - Lesotho issues five postage stamps depicting various Disney characters.
  • 1986 - Maldives issues ten postage stamps depicting US stamps and Disney portrayals of American legends.
  • 1987 - The NBC TV network airs the TV special Disney's Golden Anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • 1987 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Ernest Goes To Camp to theaters in the US.
  • 1988 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Meet the Munceys. The show is a pilot for a proposed series.
  • 1991 - Dominica issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Japanese costumes.
  • 1992 - Hollywood Pictures releases the live-action feature film Encino Man to theatres.
  • 1998 - Tomorrowland at Disneyland re-opens after extensive remodelling.
  • 1998 - The Rocket Rods attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland. It occupies the old PeopleMover track.
  • 1998 - The American Space Experience exhibit opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1998 - The Astro Orbitor attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1998 - The 3D film Honey, I Shrunk the Audience debuts in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1998 - The Spirit of Refreshment beverage stand opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1998 - DisneyQuest opens at Downtown Disney West Side in Walt Disney World. It provides five stories of high-tech attractions, including Explore Zone, Create Zone, and Replay Zone.
  • 2001 - Disney holds a dedication ceremony at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in Walt Disney World.
  • 2003 - Disney completes the sale of the Anaheim Angels baseball team to Arte Moreno for US$185 million.
  • 2003 - The film Reflections of China debuts in the China pavilion in World Showcase at Epcot in Walt Disney World.
  • 2006 - The ABC TV network ceases airing the Alias show.
  • 2009 - Disney makes a limited release of the film The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story to theaters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and Palm Springs, California.
  • 2015 - At 6AM, the Diamond Celebration begins in Disneyland Resort for the 60th anniversary of Disneyland.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - Work on building Corvette test cars #854 and #855 is ordered terminated, with completed components to be used as spare parts.
  • 1956 - The 1532nd 1956 Corvette is completed. This car is destined to become the second SR-2, for Bill Mitchell.
  • 2005 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, round three of the American Le Mans Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 4th in GT1 class an 8th overall is the Corvette C5-R driven by Ryan Dalziel and Alex Figge.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - At the Reich Chancellory in Berlin, Italian Foreign Minister Count Ciano and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop sign a ten-year political and military alliance, dubbed the Pact of Steel.
  • 1940 - German panzers head north along the coast from Abbéville.
  • 1941 - (0052 hours) British battle cruiser Hood, battleship Prince of Wales, and six destroyers leave Scapa Flow off Scotland, to join the Norfolk and Suffolk cruisers in the Denmark Strait.
  • 1941 - (about 0300 hours) The battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen leave Norwegian waters, heading north-west around Britain.
  • 1941 - British ships attack a convoy of small ships carrying men and supplies to Crete. German Stuka dive-bombers destroy three cruisers and six destroyers, damaging thirteen other ships, including two battleships and the only aircraft-carrier in the Mediterranean fleet.
  • 1942 - Japanese naval intelligence reports on a water problem on "AF". The "problem" is actually a ruse, simply a radio message from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor designed to verify the Japanese code identity of "AF" as Midway.
  • 1942 - Submarine U-158 shells and sinks Canadian merchant ship Frank B. Baird south-east of Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-569 under commander Hans Johannsen is lost with 21 dead of 46 crew.
  • 1946 - Karl Hermann Frank, last Protector of Bohemia, is publicly hanged in Prague.
  • 1992 - Vanautu issues five postage stamps depicting planes of World War II operated by the New Hebrides.
  • 2000 - Bahamas issues five postage stamps for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
  • 2000 - Isle of Man issues eight postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
  • 2000 - Montserrat issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1999 - The television show Mortal Kombat: Conquest last airs in the US. 22 shows aired during the season.
  • 2000 - Nintendo releases the Perfect Dark video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US and England.
  • 2002 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo show is held, over three days. Total attendance is 60,000.
  • 2002 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Game Critics Awards are presented:
    • Best Original Game: Psychonauts.

  • 2007 - Atlus releases the Odin Sphere video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1525 - The Hjortsberga provincial assembly confirms the peace treaty of May 18.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1868 - An Act of Canadian Parliament receives royal assent regarding the manufacture or import of copper/brass coins/tokens, making it illegal to do so unless issued under lawful authority.
  • 1868 - An Act of Canadian Parliament receives royal assent regarding currency in Canada. Provided the Congress of the USA agrees to adopt the standards set in the International Monetary Conference, then denominations of currency in Canada would be set as pounds, shillings, pence, dollars, cents, and mills, and copper/silver/gold coins of the UK, USA, France and other countries would be legal tender in Canada. This Act also sets the value of the Canadian dollar at 1/4 of the British pound.

USA coin history:

  • 1877 - A US patent is granted to William Wheeler Hubbell for the gold-silver alloy goloid, for coinage.
  • 1933 - US Congress declares all currency in circulation legal tender.
  • 2000 - The US Mint releases the 2000 South Carolina State quarter dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1877 - Third Kentucky Derby: Billy Walker aboard Baden-Baden wins in 2:38.
  • 1884 - One-armed pitcher Hugh Daily fans 13 batters.
  • 1885 - 13th Preakness: Jim McLaughlin aboard Tecumseh wins in 2:49.
  • 1893 - Montréal Athletic Association beats Ottawa Generals 2-1, in first Stanley Cup hockey game.
  • 1902 - 36th Belmont Stakes: John Bullman aboard Mastermam wins in 2:22.6.
  • 1906 - 10th anniversary of modern Olympics celebration is held in Athens, Greece.
  • 1906 - 31st Preakness: Walter Miller aboard Whimsical wins in 1:45.
  • 1907 - Albert Trott takes two hat-tricks in an innings, Middlesex versus Somerset.
  • 1911 - Atlanta Braves' pitcher, Cliff Curtis, loses his 23rd game in a row.
  • 1927 - Brooklyn Dodgers beat Philadelphia Phillies, 20-4.
  • 1930 - New York Yankees "Bronx Bombers" hit 14 homeruns in a game. Babe Ruth hits three consecutive homeruns (8th-10th of 60 in 1930).
  • 1946 - New York Yankees turn triple-play and defeat Detroit Tigers' 5-3.
  • 1953 - New York Yankees' player Irv Noren hits into a triple-play, New York Yankees beat Washington Senators 12-4.
  • 1954 - 80th Preakness: Johnny Adams aboard Hasty Road wins in 1:57.4.
  • 1957 - Boston Red Sox set American League record by smashing four homeruns in 6th inning in 11-0 win.
  • 1962 - New York Yankees' Roger Maris walks five times (record four intentionally) in a 9-inning game.
  • 1963 - A C Milan wins 8th Europe Cup 1 at London, England.
  • 1963 - Mickey Mantle hits a ball off Yankee Stadium's facade.
  • 1966 - Shirley Englehorn wins LPGA Babe Didrikson-Zaharias Golf Open.
  • 1968 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Willie Stargell hits three homeruns, a double and a single.
  • 1970 - Mel Stottlemyre sets record by walking 11, but wins 2-0.

  • 1973 - At Xerox PARC, Bob Metcalfe invents the Ethernet computer connectivity system, describing in a memo how the technology would work. The name "Ethernet" refers to medium-independent transmission of data packets, and is based on a discredited physical theory of an existing "ether" in space allowing transmission of light rays from the sun to the Earth.

  • 1998 - A federal judge rules that United States Secret Service agents can be compelled to testify before a grand jury concerning the Lewinsky-Clinton scandal.
  • 1999 - The television show Mortal Kombat: Conquest last airs in the US. 22 shows aired during the season.
  • 2002 - In Washington, DC, Chandra Levy's remains are found in Rock Creek Park.
  • 2002 - A jury in Birmingham, Alabama convicts former Ku Klux Klan member Bobby Frank Cherry of the 1963 murders of four girls.
