  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A cyber-cafe shows several color-cased computers, a reference to the Apple Computer iMac computers.
  • 2000 - In Canada, Corel announces that the proposed merger with Inprise has been cancelled.
  • 2001 - Microsoft officially releases Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. The update fixes over 500 software bugs.
  • 2005 - Apple computer releases Mac OS X 10.4.1.
  • 2006 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor, models 4200+ energy efficient, 4400+ energy efficient, 4600+ energy efficient, and 4800+ energy efficient. Prices are US$417, US$514, US$601, and US$671 respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Three Bad Eggs to theaters.
  • 1928 - Walt Disney applies for a trademark for "Mickey Mouse", for use in motion pictures.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1993 - Marv Silverman donates his red 1981 Greenwood Daytona Turbo Coupe Corvette, serial number 1 of four built, to the National Corvette Museum. Value of the car is estimated at US$200,000.
  • 2003 - At the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, the Barber 250 at the Park race is held, round four of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT class and 10th overall is the Silverstone Racing Services #39 Corvette, driven by Larry Huang and Chris Hall.

World War II history:

  • 1935 - Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union sign a five-year Treaty of Mutual Assistance.
  • 1939 - In Halifax harbor, Nova Scotia, Canada, gold from two British warships is transferred to trains for delivery to Ottawa.
  • 1940 - (about 0000 hours) Greece rushes troop reinforcements to the frontier with Italian-occupied Albania.
  • 1940 - British forces launch three counterattacks on a railroad station on the eastern edge of Louvain, successfully retaking the position.
  • 1940 - Allies forces attempt a landing near Narvik, Norway, but are repulsed by German defenders.
  • 1940 - United States President Franklin Roosevelt asks Congress to approve a program of US$1.2 billion in defense spending, including 50,000 warplanes. The program is approved.
  • 1940 - German troops enter The Hague and Amsterdam, Netherlands.
  • 1940 - The United States State Department announces a warning to Americans in the British Isles to move to Ireland.
  • 1940 - French Premier Paul Reynaud tells the Chamber of Deputies: "Chancellor Hitler must win in two months; if not he is beaten, and knows it."
  • 1940 - A Swiss fighter plane shoots down a German bomber over Swiss territory, which lands north-east of Zurich. Three crewmen surrender.
  • 1940 - British King George designates May 26 as a day of prayer for peace throughout the United Kingdom.
  • 1940 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill provides an extra ten fighter squadrons to help France, with six operating out of Kent.
  • 1940 - By nightfall, German panzers in France reach Marle and Dercy, 55 miles from Sedan.
  • 1940 - (evening/night) British forces in Belgium retreat to west of Brussels.
  • 1940 - (night) German artillery batteries shell the library of the University of Louvain in Belgium until it is set afire and burned out.
  • 1941 - Convoy HX-127 departs Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, destined for England.
  • 1943 - Nine British Lancaster bombers fitted with dam-busting mines take off from Scampton, England, headed for the Möhne and Eder dams in Germany. After four unsuccessful tries, the fifth plane succeeds in breaching the Möhne dam. Six planes with three bombs head over to the Eder dam. The third hit breaches the dam 30 feet below the top. Five planes return to home base. Two more waves of bombers attack other dams, causing a small breach in the Sorpe dam. In total, 19 aircraft take off, and 11 return. 34 awards are given out. Extensive damage is done by the flooding and loss of hydroelectric power. 1000 houses are destroyed or damaged, 125 factories destroyed/damaged, 1294 people killed, 2822 hectares of farmland ruined, 6316 animals killed, 35 road bridges destroyed/damaged, etc. Germans add more defenses to other dams. Manpower is diverted from the West Wall to repair the dams.
  • 1943 - Jewish resistance in Warsaw ghetto crushed.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-182 under commander Asmus Nicolai Clausen is lost with all hands (61 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-463 under commander Leo Wolfbauer is lost with all hands (57 dead).
  • 1944 - In Germany, Adolf Eichmann gives Joel Brand of the Zionist Relief and Rescue Committee a ransom demand to convey to British and American governments: 1 million European Jews would be released in exchange for food and 10,000 trucks for use on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler issues a Führer Order for the employment of long-range weapons against England to commence mid-June. The weapons include Fzg. 76 (later known as the V-1 bomb) directed at London, long-range artillery directed at British towns, and bomber planes.
  • 1944 - In Italy, the 1st Canadian Corps receives orders to advance on the Hitler Line.
  • 2005 - Nevis issues ten postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is held, over three days. Total attendance is 55,000.
  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A handheld video game resembling the original Nintendo Game Boy is used on an airplane, interfering with the plane's controls.
  • 2001 - Microsoft announces the launch date of November 8 for the Xbox in the US, with a price of US$299.
  • 2001 - Nintendo shows off the GameCube system in Los Angeles, California, and announces the launch dates of September 14 in Japan and November 5 in North America.
  • 2001 - Sony CEA announces plans to bring Internet functions to the PlayStation 2, such as Web browsing, email, streaming media, and instant messaging. Sony also announces add-on accessories to be available in November: Ethernet/modem PlayStation 2 Network Adapter, 40 GB Hard Disk Drive, LCD monitor, USB keyboard, and mouse.
  • 2002 - Square releases the Final Fantasy XI video game for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. Price is 7800 yen (about US$61).
  • 2005 - At Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Sony unveils a prototype PlayStation 3 video game system. It features 3.2 GHz Cell processor delivering up to 218 gigaflops of performance, 550 MHz Nvidia RSX graphics processor, wireless Bluetooth 2.0 for up to seven controllers, Blu-Ray disc player, Internet browser, detachable hard drive, Wi-Fi connectivity to the PlayStation Portable, 512 KB Level 2 cache, 3.2 GHz 256 MB XDR main RAM, 700 MHz 256 MB GDDR3 video RAM,six USB 2.0 ports, Memory Stick port, SecureDigital port, Compact Flash Type I, II port, Ethernet port, screen size up to 1080 lines, two HDMI video out ports for 32:9 aspect on two HD monitors.   • 2006 - Nintendo releases the New Super Mario Bros. video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.

  • 2006 - Activision releases the X-Men: The Official Game video game for the Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2007 - Sony reports its games division lost US$1.9 billion during the fiscal year.
  • 2017 - Sony Interactive Entertainment releases the Farpoint video game for the Sony PSVR in the USA.
  • 2017 - Focus Home Interactive releases The Surge video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the USA.

  • 1808 - Swedish troops force Russian Admiral Bodisko on Gotland to capitulate without a fight.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1976 - At the Ontario Numismatic Association convention in Toronto, the 1911 silver pattern dollar is sold at auction to Douglas Robins of Oregon, for $110,000. The piece is from the John McKay-Clements collection. This price is tied for 8th highest paid for a coin in the world. Douglas Robins also buys a choice uncirculated 1921 5c for $5,200, and a choice uncirculated 1921 50c for $21,000.
  • 2002 - In Toronto, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the new circulating 2002 50c coin commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

USA coin history:

  • 1866 - US Congress authorizes copper-nickel 5-cent piece, legal tender up to $1, with redemption level set at $100 in lawful money.
  • 2008 - Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano ceremonially strikes the first 2008-D Arizona state quarter at the Denver Mint in Colorado.

  • 1869 - Cincinnati Reds play their first baseball game, win 41-7.

  • 1997 - U.S. President Bill Clinton issues a formal apology to the surviving victims of the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male and their families, 25 years after the 40-year "study" was exposed by reporter Jean Heller.
  • 1998 - First Global Street Party, with events in Czech Republic, Netherlands, Finland, Germany, USA, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, England. Total of 30 Reclaim The Streets events are held in 20 countries, on sections of public roads, by hundreds or thousands of people.
  • 2005 - George Galloway appears before a U.S. Senate committee, to answer allegations of making money from the Iraqi Oil-for-Food Programme.
  • 2009 - In Baltimore, Maryland, USA, the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes is held. The philly Rachel Alexandra wins, ridden by Calvin Borel, the first win for a philly since 1924.
