Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1980 - Xerox, Digital Equipment, and Intel jointly announce the Ethernet network specification.
  • 1997 - IBM unveils the ThinkPad 380 notebook computer. It features CD-ROM drive, hard disk, and floppy drive all as standard built-in drives. Prices range from US$2199 to US$3899.
  • 1997 - Digital Equipment files a lawsuit against Intel, claiming infringement in Intel's Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors of ten Digital Equipment patents related to the Alpha RISC processor.
  • 1997 - Cyrix files a lawsuit against Intel, alleging Intel copied power management and pipeline techniques protected by Cyrix patents.
  • 1999 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is held, over three days. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences presents Sid Meier the Hall of Fame award.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US.
    • In the year 3000, a celebrity's personality is downloaded from the Internet, and stored on a blank robot. The robot came from a large box shaped like a 3.5-inch diskette box, with label on the box saying "10 BLANK ROBOTS / MAC FORMATTED".
    • Later, a personal computer appears, looking just like the original 1984 Apple Computer Macintosh, with built-in monitor, keyboard, and diskette drive.
    • In the year 3000, a 3.5-inch diskette is still being used as a backup disk.

  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A personal computer appears, looking like the Apple Computer iMac.
  • 2003 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon XP 3200+ desktop processor. It features 400 MHz system bus. Price is US$464 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A desktop personal computer with keyboard and mouse appears. A snake sees the computer mouse transform into a real mouse, and it tries to eat the entire computer. "Clippy", the electronic paperclip mascot of Microsoft Office appears, asking the snake if it needs help.
  • 2009 - The European Commission slaps a record 1.06 billion euro (US$1.45 billion) fine on Intel for antitrust violations, and orders it to halt illegal efforts to squeeze out Advanced Micro Devices. The antitrust fine, imposed after an eight-year investigation, is the biggest the European Union's executive Commission has imposed on a company.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1933 - The Mickey Mouse film The Mail Pilot is released to theaters.
  • 1955 - Disney re-releases the animated short film Pedro to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film Saludos Amigos.
  • 1979 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Sky Trap.
  • 1992 - The Fantasmic! outdoor music and pyrotechnics show debuts in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures generally releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film When a Man Loves a Woman to theaters.
  • 1997 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Ransom on videocassette.
  • 1997 - The complete hull of the Disney Magic cruise ship floats for the first time.
  • 2000 - Disney premieres the animated feature-length film Dinosaur in Hollywood.
  • 2001 - The TV show The Wonderful World of Disney shows the two-hour movie Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A professor uses "Flubber" on his shoes to jump high, a reference to Disney's The Absent Minded Professor film.
  • 2003 - Buena Vista releases the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on DVD for US$29.99, and videocassette in the US.
  • 2012 - The ABC TV network airs the final episode of the Desperate Housewives TV show.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1962 - At Cumberland, Maryland, an SCCA race for A- and B-Production classes is held.
    • Finishing 1st in A-Production class and 1st overall is the Corvette driven by Richard Thompson.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 8th overall is the Corvette driven by Ralph Salyer.

  • 1986 - The NBC television network airs the 10th episode of the series Stingray. This is the last episode for this season.
  • 1991 - Production of ZR-1 Corvettes resumes at the Bowling Green plant.
  • 1998 - Sony releases the Gran Turismo video game for the PlayStation in the US. Players can race a Corvette car.
  • 2000 - The eight-day One Lap of America race finishes. A 600-hp C5 entered by Chuck Mallett finishes Third. Fifth is a Lingenfelter ZR-1, and 7th is a Lingenfelter twin-turbo C5.
  • 2003 - Nevis issues five postage stamps that mark the 50th anniversary of Corvette. Four $2 stamps depict model years 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974. A $5 stamp depicts a 1997 Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - US Congress passes the $1.156 billion Naval Expansion Bill.
  • 1940 - (0400-0427 Greenwich time) Amsterdam, Netherlands, is hit by over fifty aerial bombs.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler awards the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Iron Cross to Captain Koch and seven others for the successful attack of the Eben Emael Fort near Liége, Belgium, and bridges over the Albert Canal.
  • 1940 - The German Luftwaffe concentrates an attack on the city center of Rotterdam, Netherlands, without regard for civilian casualties. About 1000 civilians are killed.
  • 1940 - German 9th Panzer Division breaks through the frontier with Netherlands, and rushes to bridges in the Dordrecht - Moerdijk - Rotterdam area, cutting the Netherlands in two.
  • 1940 - German units passing through Luxembourg advance into Belgium through the Ardennes forest, crossing River Ourthe, heading to River Semoy.
  • 1940 - German forces bypass Liége forts in Belgium, capturing Liége itself.
  • 1940 - A German mechanized column clashes with Allied armored forces near St. Trond, 22 miles northwest of Liége.
  • 1940 - The Holland America freighter Blommersdyk arrives at Hoboken, New York, USA, with a large shipment of gold for safe-keeping at the New York Federal Reserve bank.
  • 1940 - German 7th Panzer Division lead by General Erwin Rommel crosses the Meuse River at Dinant.
  • 1940 - At Bjerkvik, Norway, seven miles north of Narvik, three battalions of French alpine troops and a Norwegian battalion land, capturing the town, and prepare for an assault on Narvik.
  • 1940 - The governments of Great Britain, Netherlands, and France assure Japan that no change of control of the Netherlands Indies is intended.
  • 1940 - The German government warns Great Britain, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands that for any German parachute soldier shot contrary to international law, ten surrendered French soldiers would be shot.
  • 1940 - (afternoon) French artillery and Allied air bombs destroy part of the Istein railroad tunnel, five miles north of the Swiss border, cutting off a section of vital army rail transportation to part of the German Westwall fortifications.
  • 1940 - (afternoon) Netherlands forces regain control of Rotterdam north of the Maas River, and Noorder Island.
  • 1940 - (about 1600 hours) German 1st Rifle Regiment of 19th Armored Corps crosses the Meuse River at Sedan, under cover of continuous light Luftwaffe attacks on defenders. Engineers complete a bridge across the river by daybreak.
  • 1940 - (1200 hours) Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands escapes to London, England, on British destroyer Hereword.
  • 1940 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill makes a speech in the House of Commons, including "... I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. If you ask me, what our war aim is, I give you only one answer: Victory! Victory whatever the cost!".
  • 1940 - (evening) The Netherlands government and others embark British destroyer Windsor for England.
  • 1940 - (evening) Munich, Germany, radio station reports Adolf Hitler saying Germany possesses a "death-dealing" wave or ray, obtained from splitting atoms, which can exterminate any living creature within a 1000-foot radius, for which no known protection has yet been discovered.
  • 1940 - (late) Grand Duchess Charlotte, ruler of Luxembourg, arrives in Paris.
  • 1941 - Four Soviet armies of the high command reserve are ordered to move from the interior to the Western and Kiev army groups.
  • 1942 - The British Chiefs of Staff approve Operation Rutter, the amphibious attack on Dieppe, France, for early July.
  • 1943 - In the North Atlantic, German submarine U-753 is sunk by combined efforts of Royal Canadian Navy corvette Drumheller, Royal Navy frigate Lagan, and British and Canadian aircraft. U-753 under commander Alfred Manhardt von Mannstein is lost with all hands (47 dead).
  • 1943 - In Tunisia in North Africa, German Afrika Korps commander General Dietloff Juergen von Arnim surrenders 275,000 troops.
  • 1945 - A Japanese Kamikaze airplane hits the US aircraft carrier Enterprise, off Okinawa.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 1998 - Sony CEA releases the Gran Turismo video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1999 - Interact Accessories releases the Sharkwire Online kit for Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. The kit includes a modem cartridge, keyboard, telephone cord, and Spyglass Device Mosaic Web browser. Users can then access the Internet to send and receive email and browse Web sites.
  • 1999 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is held, over three days. Total attendance is 55,000.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. When a child is asked what he likes to play, he says "Pokémon", likely referring to the video game.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. In an effort to keep people from entering a room, a character says "There's uh, a guy going for the Tetris world record in there!".
  • 2002 - Nintendo announces it will begin selling a network adaptor for the GameCube this fall, as well as a dial-up modem. Each will be priced at US$35.
  • 2003 - Sony announces a new handheld video game system, the PlayStation Portable. It features two 333 MHz 32-bit MIPS R4000 processors, 128-bit system bus, 8 MB eDRAM memory, 480x272 pixel 4.5-inch diagonal backlit LCD screen, Universal Media Disc optical disc reader (60-mm diameter, 1.8 GB capacity), MPEG 4 video playback, built-in stereo speakers, USB 2.0 port, IrDA and wireless 802.11 LAN ports, Sony Memory Stick data storage slot, and rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. The system is expected to be available at the end of 2004.
  • 2003 - Sony introduces the Eye Toy accessory for the PlayStation 2. It is a camera that connects to the game system via the USB port.
  • 2003 - Sony announces worldwide shipments to date of the PlayStation: 96.4 million, PlayStation 2: 51 million, Xbox: 13 million, GameCube 9.4 million.
  • 2003 - Sony reduces the price of its current PlayStation 2 inventory in the U.S. to US$179, with new systems in June to include the Network Adaptor for US$199. The updated PlayStation 2 system will support rewritable DVDs and include a quieter fan.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A character tells another to clean up the garbage, and "... if you need me, I'll be in my room playing video games.".
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. Three children play a video game called "Battle for Uranus" on a "V CUBE" video game system.

Swedish history:

  • 1525 - Lübeckers attack Visby, plunder it, and burn a portion of it. Denmark is re-established as having authority over the island of Gotland.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1954 - A Proclamation sets the composition and design of the 5c coin in nickel.

USA coin history:

  • 1785 - The Continental Congress committee reports on plans for a coinage.
  • 1942 - The US Mint begins trial strikings of the Jefferson 5-cent coin in silver alloy composition.
  • 1965 - The Denver Mint begins trial strikings of the Peace silver dollar, dated 1964.

Sports history:

  • 1845 - Over 50,000 attend a horse race at Union course in Queen's County, New York, seeing Peytona of Tennessee beat Fashion, champ of the North.
  • 1887 - 15th Preakness: William Donohue aboard Dunboyne wins in 2:39.5.
  • 1890 - 18th Preakness: W Martin aboard Montague wins in 2:36.75.
  • 1891 - 17th Kentucky Derby: Isaac Murphy aboard Kingman wins in 2:52.25.
  • 1905 - James J Jeffries retires as boxing champion.
  • 1911 - 37th Kentucky Derby: George Archibald aboard Meridian wins in 2:05.
  • 1911 - New York Giants' Fred Merkle is first to get six RBIs in an inning (first).
  • 1916 - 42nd Kentucky Derby: Johnny Loftus aboard George Smith wins in 2:04.
  • 1922 - 48th Kentucky Derby: Albert Johnson aboard Morvich wins in 2:04.6.
  • 1933 - 59th Preakness: Charley Kurtsinger aboard Head Play wins in 2:02.
  • 1939 - 65th Preakness: George Seabo aboard Challedon wins in 1:59.8.
  • 1942 - Pitcher Jim Tobin belts three homeruns in a game.
  • 1944 - 70th Preakness: Conn McCreary aboard Pensive wins in 1:59.2.
  • 1946 - Sarwate and Banerjee add 249 for 10th wicket for Indians versus Surrey.
  • 1952 - Minor-league Bristol pitcher Ron Necciai strikes out 27 in 9-innings.
  • 1953 - New York Giants' Willie Mays and Darryl Spencer each hit two homeruns and a triple.
  • 1954 - Robin Roberts gives up a homerun then retires the next 27 men in a row.
  • 1955 - Mickey Mantle hits three consecutive homeruns of at least 463 feet.
  • 1958 - Stan Musial is 8th Major League Baseball batter to get 3,000 hits.
  • 1960 - Philadelphia Phillies lose third consecutive 1-0 game.
  • 1962 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Western Golf Open.
  • 1967 - New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle hits career homerun #500 off Baltimore Orioles' Stu Miller.
  • 1967 - Octagonal boxing ring is tested to avoid corner injuries.
  • 1972 - Milwaukee Brewers beat Minnesota Twins, 4-3, in 22 innings (started May 12).
  • 1973 - Judy Rankin wins LPGA Lady Carling Golf Open.
  • 1973 - Tennis hustler Bobby Riggs, age 55, beats Margaret Smith Court 6-2, 6-1 in a Mother's Day match at San Diego Country Estate in California, USA. Riggs wins a $5000 bet that he could win.
  • 1975 - NHL Stanley Cup: Philadelphia Flyers beat New York Islanders 4-3.
  • 1976 - Ninth and final ABA championship: New York Nets beat Denver Nuggets, 4 games to 2.
  • 1978 - Henry Rono of Kenya sets record for 3,000 metre steeplechase (8:05.4).
  • 1979 - Sandra Post wins LPGA Lady Michelob Golf Tournament.
  • 1980 - Cincinnati Reds' Ray Knight hits two homeruns in 5th inning versus New York Mets.
  • 1981 - Dinamo Tbilisi wins 21st Europe Cup II.
  • 1982 - Chicago Cubs win their 8,000th baseball game (beat Houston Astros).
  • 1983 - Reggie Jackson is first major league player to strike out 2,000 times.
  • 1984 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA United Virginia Bank Golf Classic.
  • 1985 - Carlton Fisk becomes the 5th catcher to steal 100 bases.
  • 1985 - Trailing 8-0, the New York Yankees rally to beat the Minnesota Twins 9-8.
  • 1987 - Ajax wins 27th Europe Cup II.
  • 1989 - Minnesota Twins' Kirby Puckett becomes the 35th to hit four doubles in a game.
  • 1989 - Trinidad and Tobago ties US 1-1, in third round of 1990 world soccer cup.
  • 1990 - Dottie Mochrie wins LPGA Crestar Golf Classic.
  • 1992 - Ajax wins 21st UEFA Cup.
  • 1992 - Concrete foundation for ballpark at Gateway (Jacobs Field) is poured.
  • 1993 - Kansas City Royals' player George Brett hits his 300th homerun.
  • 1995 - New Zealand beats US for the America's Cup.
  • 1997 - Eddie Murray is sixth baseball player to play in 3,000 games.
  • 2006 - Liverpool F.C. defeat West Ham United F.C. on penalties in the 2006 FA Cup Final following a 3-3 draw after extra time.
  • 2022 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL Western Conference 1st Round, game 6: Dallas Stars beats Calgary Flames by score 4-2, series tied 3-3.
  • 2022 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL Eastern Conference 1st Round, game 6: Florida Panthers defeats Washington Capitals by score 4-3, winning series 4-2.
  • 2022 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL Eastern Conference 1st Round, game 6: New York Rangers defeats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 5-3, series tied 3-3.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1930 - Farmer killed by hail in Lubbock, Texas, USA; this is the only known fatality due to hail.
  • 1975 - Hail stones as large as tennis balls hit Wernerville, Tennessee.
  • 1996 - Severe thunderstorms and a tornado in Bangladesh kill 600.

USA history:

  • 1785 - The Continental Congress committee reports on plans for a coinage.
  • 1828 - US passes Tariff of Abominations.
  • 1846 - US declares war on México, two months after fighting began.
  • 1861 - Queen Victoria announces England's position of neutrality in the War Between the States.
  • 1864 - Junius Daniel, Confederate Brigadier-General, dies at age 35.
  • 1864 - Atlanta Campaign - Battle of Resaca, Georgia.
  • 1865 - Central Pacific Railroad Company completes section of track from Roseville to Auburn, California.
  • 1865 - South Brownsville, Texas, (Palmito Ranch) final engagement of American Civil War; Private John J Williams of 34th Indiana is last man killed.
  • 1884 - Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is founded.
  • 1916 - First observance of Indian (Native American) Day in the USA.
  • 1918 - First US airmail stamps issued (24 cents).
  • 1938 - US Congress passes the $1.156 billion Naval Expansion Bill.
  • 1942 - Helicopter makes its first cross-country flight.
  • 1945 - US troops conquer Dakeshi, Okinawa, Japan.
  • 1946 - US convicts 58 camp guards of Mauthausen concentration camp to death.
  • 1947 - US Senate approves the Taft-Hartley Act limiting the power of unions.
  • 1954 - US performs atmospheric nuclear test at Enwetak.
  • 1958 - Rioters attack US Vice President Richard Nixon in Venezuala.

  • 1966 - US Federal education funding is denied to 12 school districts in the South because of violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
  • 1975 - Hail stones as large as tennis balls hit Wernerville, Tennessee.
  • 1981 - Pope John Paul II is shot and seriously wounded while passing through Saint Peter's Square in Rome, in an open car. Four shots are fired by Mehmet Ali Agca, two striking the Pope, the other two wounding American Ann Odre and Jamaican Rose Hill.
  • 1982 - Terri Lea Utley, age 20, of Arkansas, crowned 31st Miss USA.
  • 1985 - Laura Elena Martinez-Herring, age 21 of Texas, crowned 34th Miss USA.
  • 1985 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Mayor Wilson Goode orders police to storm the radical group MOVE's headquarters to end a stand-off. The police drop an explosive device into the headquarters, killing 11 MOVE members and destroying the homes of 61 city residents in the resulting fire.
  • 1991 - Apple releases Macintosh System 7.0 operating system.
  • 1995 - Chelsi Smith, 21, of USA, crowned 44th Miss Universe; Shanna Lynn Moakler, (age 19, Miss New York), replaces Chelsi Smith as Miss USA.
  • 2005 - The United States Department of Defense issues a list of bases to be closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process (BRAC 2005).

Other history:

  • 1643 - Heavy earthquake strikes Santiago, Chile, kills one-third of population.
  • 1981 - Pope John Paul II shot, wounded by assailant in St Peter's Square.
  • 2008 - In Jaipur, India, seven bombs explode in the crowded streets of the walled quarter, killing 61 people and wounding 216. An 8th bomb explodes outside a nearby Hindu temple.
