Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Wang Laboratories introduces four new versions of its professional computers compatible with the IBM PC.
  • 1988 - WordPerfect ships the first maintenance release for WordPerfect 5.0.
  • 1997 - Intel releases the Pentium II processor. It features a new 66 MHz bus interface called Slot 1, 200 MHz 32 kB Level 1 cache, MMX instructions, 512 kB Level 2 external cache. CPU speeds available are 233, 266, and 300 MHz. The processor incorporates 7.5 million transistors using 0.35 micron process technology, and performs at 613 MIPS (300 MHz). Prices are US$636 (233 MHz), US$775 (266 MHz), and US$1981 (300 MHz) in 1000 unit quantities. Code-name during development was Klamath.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1924 - Disney ships the fifth Alice Comedy film, Alice's Fishy Story, to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1961 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring "Andrews' Raiders, episode 1: Secret Mission". It is a TV version of the film The Great Locomotive Chase.
  • 1988 - The Disney Channel airs the film Lady and the Tramp, the first time the film is shown on television.
  • 2000 - The ABC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Geppetto.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1979 - Three options are made standard equipment on 1979 Corvettes: air conditioning, power windows, and tilt-telescopic steering column, adding $706 to the base price.
  • 1994 - In France, Reeves Callaway formally introduces the Callaway SuperNatural Corvette. The car features 6.3-liter (384-ci) V-8, and body designed by Paul Deutschmann.
  • 2006 - At the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, the U.S. Sports Car Invitational race is held, round six of the Grand American Rolex Series.
    • Finishing 10th in GT class and 33rd overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Vic Rice, Tommy Riggins, and John Stevenson.
    • Finishing 15th in GT class and 39th overall is the Beachman Racing #56 Corvette, driven by Rick Delamare and Bruce Beachman.

  • 2006 - At the Silverstone circuit in England, the first race of the FIA GT3 European Championship is held. Six Corvette Z06.R cars are entered, three by Team Riverside, three by Team Carsport/Callaway. None finishes in the top three.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - French General Maurice-Gustave Gamelin restores leave for Army soldiers.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler sets May 10 as the date for Operation Sichelschnitt (sickle cut).
  • 1941 - French Deputy Premier Jean Darlan concludes a secret treaty with Germany, allowing German arms shipments across Syria to Iraq.
  • 1942 - (0810 hours) Japanese aircraft sight the US Cruiser Support Group under Rear-Admiral Crace of the British Royal Navy.
  • 1942 - (0815 hours) American aircraft sight two Japanese carriers and four heavy cruisers in the Coral Sea.
  • 1942 - (0830 hours) Japanese carrier Shoho sights American carrier Yorktown.
  • 1942 - (0900 hours) Japanese carrier-based planes attack American warships Sims and Neosho. Inouye orders the invasion fleet to turn away from its Port Moresby destination.
  • 1942 - (0926 to 1030 hours) Yorktown launches planes to attack the Japanese carrier force in the Coral Sea.
  • 1942 - (1100 hours) Planes from US carrier Yorktown sight the carrier Shoho.
  • 1942 - (1135 hours) Torpedo planes from US carrier Yorktown put five torpedoes into Japanese carrier Shoho, sinking it.
  • 1942 - (1358 hours) Land-based Japanese aircraft attack the Cruiser Support Group in the Coral Sea.
  • 1942 - In Canada, the Prime Minister recommends to Cabinet that the National Resources Mobilization Act be amended, to allow conscription for overseas war duty.
  • 1942 - Submarine U-136 shells and sinks Canadian merchant ship Mildred Pauline in the North Atlantic. There are no survivors.
  • 1942 - (2400 hours) the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby is postponed.
  • 1943 - American and British forces capture Tunis and Bizerte in North Africa. 160,000 German and Italian soldiers surrender at Tunis.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-209 under commander Heinrich Brodda is lost with all hands (46 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-447 under commander Friedrich Bothe is lost with all hands (48 dead).
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler gives Erwin Rommel control of three panzer divisions in northern France, the 2nd, 21st, and 116th.
  • 1945 - (0241 hours French time) At Rheims, France, German armed forces sign unconditional surrender, effective from 0001 hours on May 9. Signing for Germany is Chief of Staff of German Army Colonel General Gustaf Jodl. Signing for the Supreme Allied Commander is Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Walter Smith. Signing for France is General François Sevez. Signing for the Soviet Union is General Ivan Susloparoff.
  • 1945 - The Soviet Union's Extraordinary State Commission reports that the German concentration camp of Oswiecim in Poland had systematically killed over four million citizens of the Soviet Union, Poland, France, Belguim, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and others. This is the greatest incidence of mass murder on recorded history.
  • 1945 - American soldiers of the 85th Infantry Division of the US Ninth Army capture a resort hotel near Dobbiaca, Italy, near the Austrian border. The 150-man German garrison surrenders with little fight. Inside are 133 political hostages, intended to be executed if the hotel was captured. Included are former French Premier Léon Blum, Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg, former Hungarian Premier Nicholas von Kallay, former Chief of German General Staff Franz Halder, and Alex von Stauffenberg. Schuschnigg had been held for seven years.
  • 1945 - Japanese totalitarian party head General Jiro Minami declares that Japan never had the "slightest intention" of relying on the assistance of Germany in the Pacific war.
  • 1945 - Nazis in Denmark surrender to Canadian Flying Officer Bob MacDougall, a Halifax bomber tail gunner who had been shot down April 26, and held as a prisoner of war.
  • 1945 - British troops capture Dr. Anton Mussert in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was the leader of Dutch Nazis.
  • 1945 - The US House of Representatives passes a resolution authorizing the US to join the Allies in tracking down war criminals by all means possible.
  • 1945 - About fifty US B-29 bombers make daytime bombing raids on four Kyushu airdromes and industrial areas. Two planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - A German submarine torpedoes Canadian merchant ship Avondale Park.
  • 1945 - The US First Marine Division reaches one mile from Naha, capital of Okinawa.
  • 1945 - Spain severs diplomatic relations with Germany.
  • 1945 - (1030 hours Paris time) The Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force holds a press conference, informing the press of the signing of German armed forces surrender. The information is not to be published until the public announcement 1500 hours May 8.
  • 1945 - (1400 hours) From Flensburg, Germany, German Foreign Minister Count Ludwig Schwerin von Krosigk announces that Karl Donitz had ordered the unconditional surrender of all German forces.
  • 1945 - (evening) The Swedish Foreign Office announces Sweden has broken off diplomatic relations with Germany, and taken over the German Legation, Consulate, and other properties in Stockholm.
  • 1945 - (evening) Soviet Union leader Josef Stalin announces the capture of Breslau, capital of Lower Silesia, after an 84-day siege. 40,000 Germans are captured.
  • 1985 - The German Democratic Republic issues five postage stamps marking the 40th anniversary of liberation.
  • 2005 - Ukraine issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2010 - Falkland Islands issues 8 postage stamps marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1967 - Ralph Baer first tests his circuit for a simple block chase game on a standard television set.
  • 1992 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show. A character says "Let's go to the arcade".
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Mario Party 3 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2004 - Vivendi Universal Games releases the Van Helsing video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - King Gustav Adolf's forces enter Munich.
  • 1945 - Germany capitulates, ending the war in Europe.
  • 1945 - (evening) The Swedish Foreign Office announces Sweden has broken off diplomatic relations with Germany, and taken over the German Legation, Consulate, and other properties in Stockholm.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1987 - At the Royal Canadian Mint's Winnipeg facility, a ceremony is held for the first-striking of the new circulating $1 coin. Minister of Supply and Services Monique Vezina strikes the first coin.
  • 1992 - In Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, the fifth 25c issue in the Canada 125 Coin Program is unveiled. Elizabeth Dulac created the design.
  • 2005 - The Royal Canadian Mint launches the 1945-2005 commemorative 5-cent circulating coin. It features a torch and "V" design similar to the 1943-45 coins, but with a round edge, no morse code, and in nickel-plated steel.
  • 2008 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils a $2 circulating coin for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City. 6 million coins are to be produced. The design was created by Geneviève Bertrand.

USA coin history:

  • 1838 - The New Orleans Branch Mint begins operations, striking 1838 Seated Liberty dimes, first US coins with a "O" mint mark. After striking 30 dimes for special purposes, the press breaks down.
  • 1849 - Chief Engraver James Longacre completes master dies for the Coronet gold dollar coin.
  • 1981 - US Treasurer Angela Buchanan announces in a congressional hearing a reversal in Treasury policy, removing the government's objections to the production of U.S. commemorative coins.

Sports history:

  • 1907 - Charles Collier wins first Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Race (38.22 mph).
  • 1910 - 35th Preakness: R Estep aboard Layminster wins in 1:40.6.
  • 1917 - Boston Red Sox' Babe Ruth beats Washington Senators' Walter Johnson, 1-0.
  • 1921 - 47th Kentucky Derby: Charles Thompson on Behave Yourself wins 2:04.2.
  • 1922 - Belgian soccer team defeats Netherlands, 2-1.

  • 1932 - At the Churchill Downs racecourse near Louisville, Kentucky, the 58th Kentucky Derby horse race is held. Eugene James aboard Burgoo King wins in 2:05.2. Total legal betting on the race: US$277,000.
  • 1938 - 64th Kentucky Derby: Eddie Arcaro aboard Lawrin wins in 2:04.8.
  • 1945 - Branch Rickey announces formation of the US Negro Baseball League.
  • 1949 - 75th Kentucky Derby: Steve Brooks aboard Ponder wins in 2:04.2.
  • 1951 - International Olympic committee allows Russia to participate in 1952 Olympics.
  • 1955 - 81st Kentucky Derby: Bill Shoemaker aboard Swaps wins in 2:01.8.
  • 1956 - New York Giants' Bill White homers in his first at bat.
  • 1957 - Cleveland Indians' pitcher Herb Score is hit in the face by a line drive off Gil McDougald.
  • 1959 - "Roy Campanella Night" Largest baseball crowd (93,103 in Los Angeles Coliseum) sees Los Angeles Dodgers' Sandy Koufax beat New York Yankees 6-2 in exhibition.
  • 1960 - 86th Kentucky Derby: Bill Hartack on Venetian Way wins in 2:02.4.
  • 1960 - Los Angeles Dodgers' Norm Sherry's 11th homerun wins the game for brother Larry.
  • 1961 - Ruth Jessen wins LPGA Peach Blossom Golf Open.

  • 2010 - The opening match of the 2010 world hockey championship between Germany and the United States is viewed by a world record crowd of 77,803 (validated by a representative of the Guinness World Book of Records) at the Veletins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Germany defeats the USA 2-1 in overtime.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Tampa Bay Rays beats Seattle Mariners by score 8-2.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Washington Nationals beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-3.
