Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - The Macintosh XL (formerly called Lisa) is dropped from Apple Computer's product line.
  • 1994 - Commodore International and Commodore Electronics (two of the many international components of Commodore Business Machines) file for voluntary liquidation.
  • 1996 - Power Computing releases the PowerTower line and the PowerCenter line of Macintosh-compatible computers. All systems use the PowerPC 604 processor, and range in price from US$1895 to US$4195.
  • 1997 - Larry Ellison calls off his takeover of Apple Computer.
  • 2002 - Apple Computer announces the Apple eMac computer, for the educational market only. It features 700 MHz G4 processor, 128 MB CDROM, 40 GB hard drive, CD-RW drive, 17-inch monitor, nVidia GeForce2 MX video card, five USB ports, two FireWire ports, built-in speakers and microphone, keyboard, mouse, OS X 10.1.5. Price is US$1099.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases Mac OS X 10.4 operating system. New features include Spotlight search, Dashboard with 14 mini-apps, 64-bit memory addressing, iChat, QuickTime 7. Price is US$129 for single user, or US$199 for a five-user license. Price in the UK is 89 pounds. Code-name during development was Tiger.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney ships the Alice Comedy film Alice Charms the Fish to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1949 - The Pluto film Pluto's Sweater is released. Figaro and Minnie Mouse also appear.
  • 1957 - Walt Disney officially opens the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walk-Through attraction in Disneyland, showing a 3-D portrayal of the story of Sleeping Beauty.
  • 1983 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Something Wicked This Way Comes to theaters in the US. The film is based on the novel by Ray Bradbury.
  • 1988 - The Bebop Hop shop opens in Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film Danny, the Champion of the World.
  • 1990 - The Pendleton Woolen Mills Dry Goods Store in Frontierland at Disneyland closes.
  • 1990 - The One Man's Dream show gives its last performance at the Videopolis in Disneyland.
  • 1991 - The Disney Development Company unveils plans for Celebration, Florida, to have 20,000 people living in four villages.
  • 1994 - The Surf's Up unit of the All-Star Sports Resort hotel opens at Walt Disney World.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures makes a limited release of the film When a Man Loves a Woman to theaters.
  • 1995 - The ABC TV network airs the Disney TV movie Escape to Witch Mountain. It is a different movie than the 1975 film.
  • 1997 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film The Preacher's Wife on videocassette.
  • 2000 - Michael J. Fox adds his handprints to the collection at the Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1962 - At the Virginia International Raceway, in Virginia, an SCCA National race for A-, B-, and C-Production classes is held.
    • Finishing 1st in A-Production class and 1st overall is the #11 Corvette driven by Dick Thompson.
    • Finishing 2nd in A-Production class and 2nd overall is the #18 Corvette driven by Ben Moore.
    • Finishing 3rd in A-Production class and 3rd overall is the #58 Corvette driven by Dick Lang.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 4th overall is the #12 Corvette driven by Don Yenko.
    • Finishing 4th in A-Production class and 5th overall is the #41 Corvette driven by Robert Ryan Brown.
    • Finishing 5th in A-Production class and 7th overall is the #47 Corvette driven by Roy Kumnick.
    • Finishing 3rd in B-Production class and 8th overall is the #31 Corvette driven by Grady Davis.
    • Finishing 4th in B-Production class and 12th overall is the #42 Corvette driven by George McKean.
    • Finishing 6th in A-Production class and 15th overall is the #8 Corvette driven by Hank Mergner.

  • 1984 - At the Riverside Raceway in California, the IMSA Los Angeles Times / Nissan Grand Prix 6 Hours of Endurance race is run. Walt Bohren and Rod Millen race #47 Corvette GTP in GTO class. They are out at 2.5 hours of the six-hour race.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Forty tons of gold of fifty total are loaded on HMS Glasgow at Åndalsnes, Norway, along with the Norwegian royal party, headed initially to Tromso.
  • 1944 - (0417 hours) In the English Channel, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Athabaskan is hit by a torpedo from German destroyer T-24.
  • 1944 - (0418 hours) In the English Channel, Canadian destroyers Athabaskan and Haida score a hit on a German destroyer.
  • 1944 - (0420 hours) In the English Channel, Canadian destroyers Athabaskan and Haida score a second hit on a German destroyer.
  • 1944 - (about 0425 hours) In the English Channel, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Haida forces German destroyer T-27 to run aground on Ile de Vierge.
  • 1944 - (0427 hours) Canadian destroyer Athabaskan suffers a second explosion, possibly from a torpedo hit, and sinks in the English Channel. 128 men die, 83 taken prisoner, 44 rescued.
  • 1945 - American 1st Armored Division enters Milan, Italy.
  • 1945 - Operation Manna begins, as British Bomber Command begins dropping food in four pre-approved drop zones in western Holland. By the end of the day, 239 Lancaster bombers have dropped 500+ tons of food.
  • 1945 - A tentative agreement is made with the Swedish Government for German forces in Norway to be disarmed and interred in Sweden.
  • 1945 - US 7th Army takes Admiral Nicholas Horthy, Regent of Hungary, into protective custody.
  • 1945 - In Moscow, USSR, it is announced that Karl Renner has established a provisional government of Austria, under Soviet auspices.
  • 1945 - 429 American and British former prisoners-of-war are released by Japanese retreating from Rangoon. Some had been held since the fall of Singapore.
  • 1945 - (about 1300 hours) American 42nd and 45th Divisions capture Dachau concentration camp in Germany, liberating 32,000.
  • 1945 - (1415 hours) In Caserta, Italy, surrender documents are signed by a German lieutenant colonel and a major, for all German forces in Italy.
  • 1945 - The last parts of French soil, on the Alpine front, still held by Germans are liberated by French forces.
  • 1945 - Adolf Hitler writes his last will and testament, and final instructions for his staff. He places sole responsibility for all the deaths on the Jews. He appoints Karl Dönitz as Reich President, Joseph Goebbels as Chancellor, Martin Bormann as Party Minister, and Arthur Seyss-Inquart as Foreign Minister.
  • 1945 - American escort carriers attack Sakishima Islands, 145 miles south-west of Okinawa, Japan.
  • 1945 - (evening) Canadian forces secure Leer, Netherlands.
  • 1945 - (Tokyo time) American 27th Army Infantry captures Machinato airfield on Okinawa, Japan.
  • 1946 - Poland issues a postage stamp depicting the Majdanek concentration camp, 1941-44.
  • 1975 - Netherlands issues a postage stamp marking the 30th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1985 - The Grenadines of St. Vincent: Bequia issues eight postage stamps depicting World War II warships.
  • 1995 - France issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.
  • 2005 - Armenia issues a postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Canada issues a postage stamp marking the Battle of the Atlantic.

Video game history:

  • 2008 - Take-Two Interactive Software releases the Grand Theft Auto IV video game for the PlayStation III and Xbox 360 in the USA and UK. First day sales in the UK: 609,000, a record. 3.6 million copies (US$310 million) are sold in the first 24 hours, a new record.

USA coin history:

  • 1816 - Congress approves legal tender status for French silver 5-franc coins, and orders assays of British and Portuguese coins.
  • 1948 - US Mint Nellie Ross introduces the 1948 Franklin half dollar to 200 invited guests at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
  • 2006 - Heritage Auctions sells the Floyd Star specimen of the 1792 half disme, graded SP-67 PCGS, for $1,322,000.
  • 2009 - (to May 1) Heritage Numismatic Auctions conductions coin auctions at the Central States Numismatic Society convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some highlights:
    • US 1804 Draped Bust dollar, Adams-Carter specimen, Class III, PR-58 PCGS: US$2.3 million;
    • 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, AU-55 NGC: US$345,000;
    • 1795 Draped Bust, Small Eagle, Centered Bust dollar, MS-65 PCGS US$253,000;

  • 1901 - 27th Kentucky Derby: Jimmy Winkfield on His Eminence wins in 2:07.75.
  • 1918 - Tris Speaker ties career outfield record of four unassisted double plays.
  • 1922 - First official International Weightlifting Federation Champion (Tallinn, Estonia).
  • 1930 - 123 runs are scored in 7 Major League Baseball games.
  • 1931 - Cleveland Indians' Wes Ferrell no-hits Saint Louis Browns, 9-0.
  • 1934 - Pittsburgh is last Major Baseball League city to play a home game on a Sunday.
  • 1936 - First pro baseball game in Japan is played; Nagoya defeats Daitokyo, 8-5.
  • 1948 - Donald Bradman scores 107 Australia versus Worcestershire, 152 minutes, 15 fours.
  • 1953 - Joe Adcock is first to homer into Polo Grounds' center field bleachers.
  • 1956 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Peach Blossom Golf Open.
  • 1961 - ABC-TV debuts ABC's Wide World of Sports, hosted by Jim McKay.
  • 1962 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship.
  • 1973 - Gloria Ehret wins LPGA Birmingham Golf Classic.
  • 1979 - Jane Blalock wins LPGA Otey Crisman Golf Classic.
  • 1981 - Philadelphia Phillies' Steve Carlton is first lefty to strike out 3,000 batters.
  • 1984 - Betsy King wins LPGA Freedom/Orlando Golf Classic.
  • 1985 - Ranger Larry Parrish is 5th to hit three homeruns in a game in both leagues.
  • 1985 - Tony Tubbs TKOs Greg Page in 15 for heavyweight boxing championship.
  • 1986 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox sets the record for the most strikeouts in a nine inning Major League Baseball game, striking out 20 Seattle Mariners' players.
  • 1987 - Chicago Cubs' Andre Dawson hits for the cycle.
  • 1988 - Baltimore Orioles beat Chicago White Sox 9-0 for first 1988 win after 21 losses.
  • 1990 - Dan Quisenberry (all-time American League save king, 238) announces his retirement.
  • 1995 - Kansas City Royals' player John Nonely is 70th to homerun on his first time at bat.
  • 1996 - New York Mets' pitcher John Franco becomes the first left-hander to record 300 saves.
  • 1997 - Kansas City Royals' player Chili Davis is 75th to hit 300 homeruns.
  • 2006 - Trevor Hoffman appears as a pitcher in his 803rd game for the San Diego Padres establiishing a new record for games pitched for any one team.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Washington Nationals beats San Francisco Giants by score 14-4.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Detroit Tigers by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Oakland Athletics by score 9-8.

  • 1861 - Maryland's House of Delegates votes against seceding from USA.
  • 1862 - 100,000 federal troops prepare to march into Corinth, Mississippi, CSA.
  • 1863 - Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia (Fredericksburg, Wilderness Tavern).
  • 1864 - Skirmish at Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, begins.
  • 1894 - Commonwealth of Christ (Coxey's Army) arrives in Washington DC, 500 strong to protest unemployment; Coxey arrested for trespassing at Capitol.
  • 1912 - 108 degrees F (42 degrees C), Tuguegarao, Philippines (Oceania record high).
  • 1926 - France and US reach accord on repayment of WWI.
  • 1939 - Whitestone Bridge connecting Bronx and Queens opens (New York).
  • 1943 - US 34th Division occupies Hill 609, North Tunisia.

The verdict results in several days of riots in Los Angeles and smaller riots around the country, leading to 53 deaths and US$1 billion in damage.
  • 1993 - In western Arizona, USA, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurs.
  • 2003 - The United States announces the withdrawal of troops stationed in Saudi Arabia, and the redeployment of some at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
  • 2004 - The last Oldsmobile car rolls off of the assembly line in the USA, ending 107 years of production.
  • 2004 - In Washington, D.C., the National World War II Memorial opens on 7.4 acres of land.
  • 2006 - Massive anti-war demonstrations and a march down Broadway in New York City mark the third year of war in Iraq.
