Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - Xerox introduces the Xerox 8010 Star Information System. It includes a bitmapped screen, WYSIWYG word processor, mouse, laser printer, Smalltalk language, Ethernet, and software for combining text and graphics in the same document. Many features that were developed for the Alto are incorporated.
  • 1995 - The US Department of Justice files a lawsuit to block the merger of Intuit and Microsoft.
  • 2000 - Advanced Micro Devices announces that its upcoming low-cost processor, currently code-named Spitfire, will be called Duron when it is released in June.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character takes a laptop computer to a dude ranch, and asks if there is an Internet connection.
  • 2004 - Corel releases WordPerfect Office 12 for Windows. Included are Wordperfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheet program, and Presentations slide show software. Price is US$300 for full version, or US$150 for upgrade from a previous version.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases updated Power Mac G5 systems. They feature single or dual processors operating at 2 to 2.7 GHz. Starting prices range from US$1499 to US$2999.
  • 2008 - Advanced Micro Devices unveils its first computer brand, AMD Business Class desktop personal computers, initially aimed at the small- and medium-size business market. The desktops include AMD Phenom X3 triple-core, AMD Phenom X4 quad-core, and AMD Athlon X2 dual-core processors.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1951 - The Goofy film Cold War is released.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the special animated film Hooked Bear to theaters. Humphrey the bear and Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore are featured.
  • 1960 - Disney releases the seventeenth and final People and Places film The Danube to theaters.
  • 1980 - The NBC TV network airs the Disney's Wonderful World show, featuring The Secret of Lost Valley, part one.
  • 1984 - The General Store opens in Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1986 - The Disney Channel airs the International Circus Stars of Tomorrow.
  • 1989 - Disney and Eastman Kodak announces a 15-year promotional agreement, including Kodak's use of Disney characters in advertisements, sole supplying of film for Disney's theme parks and commercial use, etc.
  • 1990 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Spaced Invaders to theaters.
  • 1991 - Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3-D film premieres at Walt Disney World.
  • 1992 - The TravelPort attraction in Communicore East at EPCOT Center closes.
  • 2001 - The Rocket Rods attraction at Disneyland closes.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A lawyer tells a character "... don't use A flat or G natural. Those notes are owned by Disney."
  • 2004 - The Disney board expresses complete confidence in Michael Eisner as CEO, and Robert Iger as President.
  • 2008 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. DVD copies of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 are made from manure.
  • 2016 - Disney releases the Marvel Pictures film Captain America: Civil War in theaters in France.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1954 - At the General Motors Training Center in Chicago, Illinois, Chevrolet dealers in the area learn sales and service information about Corvettes, then drive away 44 1954 model Corvettes to dealership lots.
  • 1986 - The IMSA Los Angeles Times Grand Prix of Endurance six-hour race is held at Riverside, California. Doc Bundy in the Hendrick Motorsports Corvette GTP is involved in a crash.
  • 2008 - At the Virginia International Raceway, the Bosch Engineering 250 at VIR race is held, round 4 of the Grand-American Road Racing Championship.
    • Finishing 7th in GT class and 24th overall is Sahlen/Nonnamaker in the #42 Team Sahlen Corvette.
    • Finishing 12th in GT class and 29th overall is Pobst/Gue in the #97 Stevenson Motorsports Corvette.
    • Finishing 15th in GT class and 32nd overall is Nonnamaker/Nonnamaker in the #43 Team Sahlen Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - By mid-day, German panzer tanks enter Athens, Greece.
  • 1942 - In Canada, a national vote is taken on the subject of conscription of soldiers for overseas duty. The response is 64% in favor of conscription, though in Quebec province 76% vote against. The Prime Minister decides that to keep Canada united, he would postpone conscription as long as possible.
  • 1942 - (evening) 43 British Halifax and Lancaster bombers attack the German Tirpitz battleship in Aalsfjord, near Trondheim, Norway. The ship is not hit, and five planes are shot down.
  • 1943 - (evening) 160 British Bomber Command aircraft take off to lay mines. 458 are laid off the French Atlantic ports, and around the Frision Islands. One plane is shot down.
  • 1944 - (night) Operation Tiger takes place, with the Allies practising landing at Slapton Sands on the south coast of England. Several German E-boats (Schnellbootes) sink two LSTs and damage six others, with the loss of over 700 men.
  • 1944 - (evening) 323 British bombers attack Friedrichshafen, Germany. They destroy two-thirds of the Zeppelin works which was building V-2 rocket components.
  • 1945 - The British 30th Corp captures Bremen, Germany.
  • 1945 - Allies capture Milan, Italy.
  • 1945 - (night) Royal Australian Air Force Liberator bombers strike airfields at Surabaya, Java, and the airfield at Malang.
  • 1945 - (night) About 100 Japanese aircraft make suicide and bombing attacks on Admiral Richard Turner's flagship off Okinawa, Japan. One ship is sunk; about 25 planes are shot down.
  • 1993 - Gibraltar issues four postage stamps depicting World War II warships.
  • 1995 - Philippines issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Baguio.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Sid Sheinberg, president of MCA and Universal, meets Arnold Greenberg, president and CEO of Coleco Industries, in Hollywood. Sheinberg says Donkey Kong violates copyright on movie title King Kong.
  • 1991 - NCS releases the Shubibinman 2 video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 2004 - Capcom releases the Onimusha 3: Demon Siege video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2008 - Nintendo releases the Mario Kart Wii video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA and Canada.
  • 2010 - Capcom releases the Super Street Fighter IV video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Ubisoft releases the Outland video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1908 - (to October 31) The 4th Olympic Games are held in London, England. Sweden wins 8 gold, 6 silver, and 11 bronze medals.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1842 - The Currency Act of 1841 comes into effect, making legal tender the British sovereign, and the American eagle ($10), dollar, and half-dollar coins. French crowns and half-crowns are no longer legal tender.
  • 1998 - The Royal Canadian Mint announces the "Create a Centsation" design contest for twelve 25-cent coins for 1999, to commemorate the past 100 years of Canadian history. The contest is scheduled to close August 31, 1998. A second phases of the contest is to design twelve 25c coins for 2000, to speculate on future Canadian progress. This contest is scheduled to close June 30, 1999.
  • 2000 - In Winnipeg, the Mint's new coin plating facility is officially opened.

Sports history:

  • 1903 - First New York Highlanders shut-out, Philadelphia Athletics win 6-0.
  • 1908 - (to October 31) The Games of the IV Olympiad are held in London, England. Women compete in the modern Olympics for the first time.
  • 1918 - Brooklyn Dodgers get first victory after worst major league start (0-9).
  • 1935 - New York Yankees pull a first inning triple-play and beat Philadelphia Athletics 9-8.
  • 1944 - Boston Braves' Jim Tobin no-hits Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0.
  • 1947 - Babe Ruth Day celebrated at Yankee Stadium and throughout the US.
  • 1953 - Wrestler Freddie Blassie coins the term "Pencil neck geek".
  • 1956 - Heavyweight champion, Rocky Marciano, retires undefeated from boxing.
  • 1961 - NFL officially recognizes Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
  • 1968 - Baltimore Orioles' player Tom Phoebus no-hits Boston, 6-0.
  • 1968 - Jimmy Ellis beats Jerry Quarry for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1969 - Carol Mann wins LPGA Raleigh Ladies Golf Invitational.
  • 1971 - Curt Flood resigns from Washington Senators after 13 games and departs for Denmark.
  • 1973 - Kansas City Royals' Steve Busby no-hits Detroit Tigers, 3-0.
  • 1975 - Sandra Haynie wins LPGA Charity Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - 14th Mayor's Trophy Game, New York Yankees beat New York Mets 4-3 in 11 innings.
  • 1980 - Barbara Barrow wins LPGA Birmingham Golf Classic.
  • 1983 - Houston Astros' pitcher Nolan Ryan breaks Walter Johnson's 56-year old record by striking out Brad Mills for his 3,509th career strikeout.
  • 1984 - Cleveland Indians beat Detroit Tigers, 8-4, in 19 innings.
  • 1986 - Pat Bradley wins LPGA S&H Golf Classic.
  • 1990 - Los Angeles Dodgers' Orel Hershiser undergoes career-threatening shoulder surgery.
  • 1990 - Villanova's women set a 6,000-metre relay world record of 17:18:10.
  • 1991 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by David Ozio.
  • 1992 - New York Jets finish perfect 5-0 pre-season for first time.
  • 1992 - New York Mets trade David Cone to Toronto Blue Jays for Jeff Kent.
  • 1993 - All 30 members of the Zambia national football team lose their lives in a plane crash off Libreville, Gabon in route to Dakar, Senegal to play a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Senegal (the most tragic incident to date in African football history).
  • 1994 - 7th longest NHL game: New Jersey Devils beat Buffalo Sabres (125 minutes 43 seconds).
  • 1994 - Graeme Obree bicycles world record time (52,713 km).
  • 1994 - Minnesota Twins righty Scott Erickson no-hits Milwaukee Brewers 6-0.
  • 1996 - Brunswick World Tournament of Champions won by Dave D'Entremont.
  • 1997 - Frank Nobilo wins Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic at Forest Oaks.
  • 1997 - Nancy Lopez wins LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Championship.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats San Francisco Giants by score 1-0.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Cleveland Guardians by score 9-5.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Texas Rangers by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Minnesota Twins beats Detroit Tigers by score 5-0.

  • 1861 - US President Abraham Lincoln suspends the writ of habeas corpus.
  • 1863 - Battle of Streight's raid: Tuscumbia to Cedar Bluff, Alabama.
  • 1865 - Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) is chartered.
  • 1865 - The side-wheel steamboat SS Sultana explodes in the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. An estimated 1800 of the 2427 passengers die. The ship was carrying 2000 paroled USA POWs on their way home. 1450 are killed.
  • 1874 - White League, a paramilitary white supremacist organization, forms.

  • 1994 - President Richard Nixon buried in Nixon Library in California.
  • 2002 - The Laughlin, Nevada River Run Riot leaves three dead.
  • 2009 - General Motors announces it will phase out the 82-year-old Pontiac brand by the end of 2010.
  • 2009 - New York residents panic as a large passenger jet flies low over Manhattan, closely pursued by a fighter aircraft; plane is the President's Air Force One, ordered there by the White House for publicity photos.
  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 3 million worldwide, while the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. passes 1 million.
