Personal computer history:

  • 1978 - Fortune magazine publishes an article on ComputerLand.
  • 1984 - At the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Apple Computer unveils the Apple IIc with an intense publicity extravaganza. It features a 1 MHz 65C02A processor, 128 kB RAM, 16 kB ROM, 3.5-inch floppy drive, 63-key keyboard, carrying handle, optional 9-inch monitor. Weight is 7.5 pounds. The operating system supports 40- or 80-column screens, and allows both QWERTY and Dvorak keyboard layouts. Priced at US$1300, 2,000 dealers place orders for more than 52,000 units on the day of its introduction.
  • 1984 - Steve Jobs announces at the Apple IIc unveiling that 60,000 Macintosh computers have been shipped to date.
  • 1984 - Apple Computer ceases development of the Apple III and Apple III+
  • 1990 - At the Palladium in New York City, Commodore hosts Multimedia Live!, and announces the Amiga 3000 computer. The system features a Motorola 16 or 25 MHz 68030, 68881 or 68882 math coprocessor, new Enhanced Chip Set, Zorro III bus, 2 MB RAM, 40 or 100 MB hard drive, AmigaDOS v2.0, and AmigaVision authoring system. Prices are US$3299 (16 MHz, 40 MB), US$3999 (25 MHz, 40 MB), US$4699 (25 MHz, 100 MB).
  • 1995 - In Atlanta, Georgia, the Comdex/Spring show is held, over four days. The Windows World '95 conference is also held.
  • 1997 - Advanced Micro Devices announces that Digital Equipment will use the K6 processor in a business desktop computer line.
  • 2006 - Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy says he will step down, with Jonathan Schwartz taking over his position.
  • 2006 - Intel announces a new personal computer platform: vPro, with security and management features built into the hardware.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring an expanded version of the film The Wetback Hound.
  • 1984 - Anguilla issues ten postage stamps depicting Mickey Mouse participating in Olympic decathlon events.
  • 1987 - Disney releases the film Tough Guys to theaters in the UK.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel begins airing another new The New Mickey Mouse Club series.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel begins airing the Teen Angel show.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Passed Away to theatres.
  • 1996 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film The Aristocats on videocassette in the USA.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures makes a preview screening of the film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion in select theaters in New York City.
  • 1997 - Disney announces it has combined Buena Vista Home Video and its international counterpart Buena Vista Home Entertainment into one unit, Buena Vista Home Video Worldwide.
  • 1998 - The WB Television Network airs the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch TV show in the USA. A teacher says "Class trip to Florida!" to which a student says "We're going to Disney World!". Part of the show takes place on location in Disney's Animal Kingdom. Someone asks where the cat is; the reply is "He's probably upstairs watching Regis", referring to Disney-ABC's Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.
  • 2002 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps depicting Mickey Mouse.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2002 - Chevrolet announces a special Commemorative Edition 2004 Corvette to celebrate Corvette Racing's Le Mans victories.
  • 2003 - In Bowling Green, Kentucky, the National Corvette Museum and the Official C5 Registry co-host the 6th Annual C5 Birthday Bash, over three days. Team Corvette from Chevrolet unveils the Commemorative Edition 2004 Corvette, and the 2004 coupe, convertible, and Z06. The Museum draws the winning raffle ticket for a 2003 50th Anniversary Pace Car Corvette.
  • 2010 - At the Virginia International Raceway the Grand-Am Virginia race is held, round 4 of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT class and 14th overall is the Banner Racing #07 Corvette, driven by Edwards/Russell.
    • Finishing 17th in GT class and 29th overall is the LG Motorsports #28 Corvette, driven by Collins/Lux.

World War II history:

  • 1926 - Germany and the Soviet Union sign the Treaty of Berlin. If one country is attacked, the other is to remain neutral.
  • 1940 - German General Nickolaus von Falkenhorst is appointed Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces Norway.
  • 1941 - The Greek government surrenders to Germany.
  • 1942 - (evening) British Bomber Command launches a second attack on Rostock, Germany.
  • 1944 - In the mid-Atlantic, a Royal Canadian Air Force Sunderland plane from 423 Squadron extensively damages German submarine U-672.
  • 1944 - (evening) 627 British bombers attack targets in Karlsruhe, Germany. Little damage is done.
  • 1944 - (evening) 260 British bombers attack targets in Munich, Germany. 30,000 people are made homeless.
  • 1945 - (0100 hours) Heinrich Himmler meets with Swedish Count Folke Bernadotte in Lübeck, Germany. With Adolf Hitler in poor health in Berlin and surrounded by Soviet forces, Himmler considers himself responsible for Germany's future. He asks Bernadotte to pass on an offer of surrender to British, American, or Swedish troops. The surrender would include German armies only on the Western Front, and in Norway and Denmark.
  • 1945 - 482 British bombers make a massive raid on Wangerooge.
  • 1945 - British bombers make an aerial attack on rail targets at Bad Oldesloe, Germany.
  • 1945 - German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop flees Berlin.
  • 1945 - Canadian forces begin crossing River Leda, to capture Leer, Netherlands.
  • 1945 - (2300 hours Swedish time, 1700 hours Eastern War Time) The Swedish Foreign Minister informs British and American representatives of Heinrich Himmler's surrender offer.
  • 1965 - Italy issues six postage stamps marking the 20th anniversary of the resistance movement.
  • 1967 - The USSR issues three postage stamps honoring partisan heroes of the war.
  • 2007 - Italy issues a 60 cent postage stamp depicting Duccio Galamberti, World War II resistance leader.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Hudson releases the Star Parodia video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 2006 - Electronic Arts releases the 2006 FIFA World Cup video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2007 - Vivendi Universal releases the F.E.A.R. video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1961 - The Vasa warship is pulled to the surface for the first time since 1628.
  • 1997 - The United States Postal Service issues a 32-cent commemorative stamp honoring Raoul Wallenberg.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2001 - In Regina, Saskatchewan, the Prince of Wales unveils the design of a Canadian 10c coin commemorating the International Year of Volunteers. The coin is to be minted for general circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1906 - An Act of Congress is signed, providing for the branch mints to produce minor coinage (previously only allowed at Philadelphia Mint.
  • 1911 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1911-dated half eagles.
  • 1938 - Feliz Schlag is announced as winner of 5-cent design competition.

Sports history:

  • 1880 - Amateur Athletic Association, governing body for men's athletics in England and Wales, is founded in Oxford, England.
  • 1894 - French cyclist Henri Desgrange rides 100km in world record 2:39:18.
  • 1894 - Philadelphia Phillies' Lave Cross hits for the cycle versus Brooklyn Dodgers.
  • 1901 - First American League baseball game, Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland Blues 8-2; three other games are rained out.
  • 1905 - First-class Cricket debut of Jack Hobbs, Surrey versus Gentlemen (18 and 28).
  • 1905 - Washington Senators execute a triple-play and beat New York Yankees 4-3.
  • 1909 - Harry Hillman and Lawson Robertson run 100 metre 3-legged race in 11 seconds.
  • 1915 - Pittsburgh Rebels' Frank Allen no-hits Saint Louis Terriers (Federal League), 2-0.
  • 1917 - New York Yankees' left-handed pitcher George Mogridge no-hits Boston Red Sox 2-1 at Fenway Park.
  • 1933 - First major league player to get four consecutive doubles in 9 innings (Dick Bartell).
  • 1945 - Albert B "Happy" Chandler is named second baseball commissioner.
  • 1946 - Eleven players (Tinker, Evers, Chance, Burkett, McCarthy, Waddell, Plank, Walsh, Chesbro, Griffith, and McGinnity) are named to Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame.
  • 1951 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Sacramento Women's Golf Invitational Open.
  • 1956 - American League umpire Frank Umont is first to wear glasses in a regular season game.
  • 1957 - Chicago Cubs' pitchers walk National League record nine Cincinnati Reds in 5th inning.
  • 1958 - Lee Walls hits three homeruns, as Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles Dodgers 15-2.
  • 1960 - Louise Suggs wins LPGA Civitan Golf Open.
  • 1960 - Record four grand slams hit today.
  • 1962 - Sandy Koufax's second 18-strikeout game.
  • 1963 - 17th NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat Los Angeles Lakers, 4 games to 2.
  • 1963 - Boston Celtics' Bob Cousy retires.
  • 1965 - New York Mets' Casey Stengel wins his 3,000th game as manager.
  • 1966 - Atlanta Braves win National League-record 18 straight home games (17 in Milwaukee).
  • 1966 - Carol Mann wins LPGA Peach Blossom Golf Invitational.
  • 1967 - 21st NBA Championship: Philadelphia 76ers beat San Francisco Warriors, 4 games to 2.
  • 1968 - ABC Masters Bowling Tournament won by Pete Tountas.
  • 1974 - Dutch women's hockey team becomes world champion.
  • 1974 - NFL grants franchise to Tampa Bay (Buccaneers).
  • 1977 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA American Defender Golf Tournament.
  • 1978 - California Angels' Nolan Ryan strikes out 15 Mariners, 20th time he has 15 in game.
  • 1981 - San Antonio Spurs blocks 20 Golden State Warriors' shots to set NBA regulation game record.
  • 1981 - Bill Shoemaker wins his 8000th race, 2000 more than any other jockey.
  • 1982 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by Mike Durbin.
  • 1982 - Saint Louis Cardinals win 12th game in a row; 7-4 over Philadelphia Phillies.
  • 1983 - Hollis Stacy wins LPGA S&H Golf Classic.
  • 1984 - Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky is third to score on a Stanley Cup penalty shot.
  • 1988 - Rosie Jones wins LPGA USX Golf Classic.
  • 1992 - George Steinbrenner drops his lawsuits against baseball.
  • 1993 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by George Branham.
  • 1994 - David Robinson scores ties 7th highest total in the NBA - 71.
  • 1994 - New York Rangers sweep New York Islanders in NHL playoffs.
  • 1996 - Highest scoring baseball game in 17 years - Minnesota Twins 24, Detroit Tigers 11.
  • 2022 - At Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Milwaukee Brewers beats Philadelphia Phillies by score 1-0.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 6-2.

  • 1897 - First reporter, William Price (Washington Star), is assigned to the White House.
  • 1898 - Spain declares war on US rejecting ultimatum to withdraw from Cuba.
  • 1898 - US fleet under commodore Dewey sails from Hong Kong to Philippines.

  • 1981 - US ends grain embargo against USSR.
  • 1984 - In Morgan Hill, California, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurs.
  • 1990 - Security law violator Michael Milken pleads guilty to six felonies.
  • 1991 - 26th Academy of Country Music Awards: Garth Brooks wins.
  • 1995 - Package bomb, linked to Unabomber, blows up killing lobbyist Gilbert B Murray in Sacramento, California.
  • 1996 - 31st Academy of Country Music Awards: Shania Twain wins.
  • 2010 - The U.S. Coast Guard discovers that an estimated 1000 barrels per day of oil is leaking from the damaged well underneath the rig that exploded off Louisiana's shore on April 20.
  • 2013 - At the Central States Numismatic Society 74th Annual Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois, Heritage Auctions conducts the Platinum Night sales.
    • $1000 Treasury note, Series 1891, EF45 Premium Paper Quality PCGS Currency: $2,585,000.
    • $1000 Treasury note, Series 1890, "Grand Watermelon" AEF34? PCGS Currency: $1,527,500.
    • $100 gold certificate, Series 1863, 1 of 3 known, AEF40 PCGS Currency: $2,115,000.
    These are the highest prices ever realized at auction for US papar money.
