Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - Sinclair Research introduces the Sinclair ZX Spectrum at the Earls Court Computer Fair in London, England. It features 3.54 MHz Zilog Z80A processor, 32x24 text, 256x192 8-color graphics, 1 channel 5 octave sound. Price for 16 kB RAM version is 125 pounds, or 48 kB RAM version for 175 pounds.
  • 1996 - Microsoft releases the Internet Explorer 2.0 web browser for the Macintosh, on systems running System 7.0.1 or higher.
  • 2001 - Intel releases the 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor. Price is US$294 in quantities of 1000.
  • 2001 - Intel releases the 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 processor. Price is US$352 in quantities of 1000.
  • 2007 - The April 23 issue of Business Week magazine shows an office with a computer shown running "SOLITAIRE", a reference to the game included with Microsoft Windows.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1923 - Virginia Davis' parents sign a contract with Laugh-O-gram Films, giving her 5 percent of receipts from showing the film Alice's Wonderland for starring in the film.
  • 1930 - Walt abandons Pat Powers as distributor, agreeing to a US$100,000 settlement to buy back the rights to their cartoon films, and get out of the deal to use the Cinephone system.
  • 1943 - The Donald Duck film Fall Out - Fall In is released to theaters.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the animated short film Two for the Record to theaters. It combines the short films After You've Gone and All the Cats Join In. They were originally released as part of the film Make Mine Music.
  • 1957 - The Midget Autopia ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1961 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the 17th "Texas John Slaughter" episode, Frank Clell's in Town.
  • 1983 - The Fantasy in the Sky event premieres at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1990 - Sierra Leone issues twelve postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Sierra Leone.
  • 1993 - The Walt Disney Company agrees to set aside 8500 acres in Florida for a wilderness preserve, allowing the company to expand on wetland near Walt Disney World.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Indian Summer to theaters in the US.
  • 1997 - Disney Online officially launches the Disney Daily Blast Internet Web site. The site provides a hour's worth of new content daily, targeting 3- to 12-year-old viewers. Following a two-week free trial, subscription price is US$4.95 per month.
  • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character says he loves the sea because "there's no... Apple Dumpling Gangs", a reference to the Disney film The Apple Dumpling Gang.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2006 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Virginia, round five of the Grand American Rolex Series is held.
    • Finishing 6th in GT class and 25th overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Vic Rice, Tommy Riggins, and John Stevenson.
    • Finishing 14th in GT class and 33rd overall is the ASC Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Zach Arnold and Johnny Miller.
    • Finishing 16th in GT class and 35th overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Michael Baughman, John Connolly.
    • Finishing 19th in GT class and 42nd overall is the Banner Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Tim Gaffney and Leighton Reese.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Greece surrenders to Italy.
  • 1942 - (evening) British Bomber Command launches a heavy attack on Rostock, Germany, the first of several nights of concentrated attacks.
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, US General Omar Bradley's 2nd Corps attacks a German division of 8000 men.
  • 1943 - Britain requests Canada commit one Canadian infantry division and one tank brigade to operations based in Tunisia.
  • 1945 - Hans John, brother of Otto John, is killed by the SS.
  • 1945 - Hermann Göring sends Adolf Hitler a telegram suggesting he take over total leadership of the Reich. Hitler has him arrested for high treason.
  • 1945 - (2300 hours) Operation Canada, the battle for Delfzijl, Holland begins, with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division attacking German defenders of the Dutch port.
  • 1955 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 10th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps.
  • 1975 - Italy issues three postage stamps marking the 30th anniversary of the resistance movement.
  • 1993 - Tuvalu issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II in the Pacific.
  • 2010 - The National Bank of Kazakhstan releases a circulating copper-nickel 50-tenge coin marking the 65th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War.
  • 2010 - Tuvalu issues three postage stamps marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show. A convenience store includes two arcade video game systems.
  • 1993 - Hudson releases the Lords of Thunder video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1998 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the Seinfeld TV show in the USA. One of the plot lines revolves around transporting a Frogger arcade machine from a closing-out business, without losing the high score record. The arcade machine is taken across a street, back and forth like playing the game.

Swedish history:

  • 1660 - Sweden concludes peace with Poland at Oliva, near Danzig. The Polish king renounces claims on the Swedish throne, and on Livonia. Brandenburg and Austria agree to evacuate Pomerania.

USA coin history:

  • 1783 - Superintendent of Finance Robert Morris submits examples of pattern 1783 Nova Constellatio coins to Congress.
  • 1918 - The Pittman Silver Coinage Act is approved, mandating the melting of up to 350 million silver dollar coins.
  • 1975 - The US Mint begins coinage of quarter dollars dated 1876-1976 for circulation.
  • 2003 - US President George W. Bush signs legislation authorizing changes to the design of the circulating 5-cent coin through 2005, to commemorate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
  • 2009 - The US Mint announces that it will produce no more 2009-dated nickels and dimes for circulation, due to lack of demand.

Sports history:

  • 1903 - New York Highlanders win their first game beating Washington Senators 7-2.
  • 1919 - US Baseball Major Leagues open a reduced 140-game season.
  • 1921 - Charles Paddock runs world record 100 metre (10.4 seconds).
  • 1940 - New York Yankees dedicate a plaque to Jacob Rupert.
  • 1946 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Ed Head no-hits Boston Braves, 5-0.
  • 1950 - First major league baseball day game completed under lights (Philadelphia Phillies 6, Boston Braves 5).
  • 1950 - 4th NBA Championship: Minneapolis Lakers beat Syracuse Nationals, 4 games to 2.
  • 1950 - NHL Stanley Cup: Detroit Red Wings beat New York Rangers, 4 games to 3.
  • 1951 - Babe Didrikson-Zaharias wins LPGA Richmond Women's Golf Open.
  • 1952 - Bob Cain of Saint Louis Browns and Bob Feller of Cleveland Indians each pitch a one-hitter.
  • 1952 - New York Giants' Hoyt Wilhelm wins his first relief game and hits his only homerun.
  • 1955 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Carrollton Golf Open.
  • 1958 - Gil Hodges hits his 300th homerun and Pee Wee Reese plays in 2,000th game.
  • 1961 - Mary Lena Faulk wins LPGA Babe Didrikson-Zaharias Golf Open.
  • 1962 - New York Mets win their first game ever, after going 0-9, beat Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1.
  • 1964 - Houston Colt 45s' Ken Johnson becomes first major league pitcher to lose a 9-inning no-hitter, Cincinnati Reds win 1-0.
  • 1967 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Raleigh Ladies Golf Invitational.
  • 1969 - ABC Masters Bowling Tournament won by Jim Chestney.
  • 1969 - Los Angeles Lakers' Jerry West scores 53 points.
  • 1972 - Betty Burfeind wins LPGA Birmingham Centennital Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA American Defender Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - Cincinnati Reds' Joe Morgan ends record streak of 91 consecutive errorless games at second base.
  • 1983 - David Hookes scores his only Test Cricket century, 143 versus Sri Lanka.
  • 1985 - Brooklyn College soccer team wins Nepal's invitational.
  • 1986 - Madrid-Nelli Cooman runs world record 60 metre indoor (7 seconds).
  • 1987 - New Jersey Devils' farm team Maine Mariners (AHL) move to Utica (Devils) New York.
  • 1988 - Karolina Szabo runs female world record 25km (1:29:30)/30km (1:47:06).
  • 1989 - Betsy King wins LPGA USX Golf Classic.
  • 1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plays his last game with the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • 1989 - Nolan Ryan blows a no hitter in 9th inning.
  • 1991 - Björn Borg loses 6-2, 6-3 to Jordi Arrese after 8 year lay off.
  • 1991 - Gordon Greenidge scores 223 versus Australia, his last Test Cricket knock at home.
  • 1994 - General Tire World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by Norm Duke.
  • 1995 - Laura Davis wins LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Golf Championship.
