Personal computer history:

  • 1977 - An attorney for MITS denies Microsoft's charges, claiming MITS is up-to-date on royalty payments, and did not have to license 8080 BASIC to competitors.
  • 1983 - Mattel Electronics introduces the Aquarius computer, with 4 kB RAM, 8 kB ROM, Z80A processor, 40x24 text output to a TV, 80x72 block graphics, in 16 colors. Price is US$160.
  • 1988 - Tandy announces THOR-CD, an erasable re-usable compact disk system for music, video, or data. Delivery of production units is 18 to 24 months away.
  • 1988 - Tandy announces the Tandy 5000MC personal computer, featuring an 80386 processor and IBM's Micro Channel bus. Price is US$4999-6999.
  • 1997 - In the lawsuit of Intel versus Advanced Micro Devices, Advanced Micro Devices agrees to a settlement, agreeing to acknowledge the term "MMX" as an Intel trademark, and receives the right to use it for marketing its K6 processors as "MMX(R) Enhanced".
  • 2003 - Intel releases the 3 GHz Pentium 4 processor with 800 MHz front-side bus. Price is US$417 in 1000-unit quantities. The previously discovered problem is resolved by a software patch.
  • 2006 - Korea issues a postage stamp depicting a personal computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - The Mickey Mouse film Just Mickey is released to theaters.
  • 1944 - The Donald Duck film Contrary Condor is released to theaters.
  • 1983 - The TV special Believe You Can... and You Can! airs, celebrating the opening of the new Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1986 - The PBS TV network airs The Television Academy Hall of Fame. Inductees include Walt Disney.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film While You Were Sleeping to theaters in the USA.
  • 1998 - An opening ceremony is held for Disney's Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer reaches an agreement with Disney's Buena Vista Music Group for Apple's Internet iTunes Music Store to carry soundtrack music titles of many Disney films.
  • 2006 - The United States Postal Service issues four Disney stamps entitled "Art of Disney: Romance" with Mickey and Minnie, Cinderella and Prince, Beauty & Beast, Lady & Tramp.
  • 2008 - The Walt Disney Company announces the launch of a new film label, Disneynature, dedicated to producing wildlife and environmental documentaries.
  • 2011 - The Disneynature documentary film African Cats is released to theaters in Argentina.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - Final changes are made to the specifications of the 1958 Corvette.
  • 1973 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida, the three-hour Daytona Continental race is held. The Leldon Blackwell Racing #94 1968 Corvette L88 has the top qualifying speed of 222mph.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 2nd overall is the Race Enterprise & Developments #5 Corvette driven by Dave Heinz.
    • Finishing 4th in GTO class and 4th overall is the Leldon Blackwell #94 Corvette driven by Bill Bean and Wilbur Pickett.
    • Finishing 6th in GTO class and 7th overall is the John Greenwood Racing #48 Corvette driven by John Greenwood.
    • Finishing 9th overall is the Phil Currin #99 Corvette driven by Phil Currin.
    • Finishing 16th overall is the ALTO Racing? #83 Corvette driven by Bob Farrell and Lou D'Amico.
    • Finishing 18th overall is the #19 Corvette driven by Lamar Mann.
    • Finishing 25th overall is the Performance Associates #3 Corvette driven by Dick Bauer.
    • Finishing 42nd overall is the #38 Corvette driven by Terry Wolters.
    • Placing 49th overall is the #41 Corvette driven by Vic Shinn.

  • 1983 - The 1984 Corvette goes on sale in the US, outside of California.
  • 1996 - Zora Arkus-Duntov dies at age 86, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
  • 2001 - At the Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona, the Sun Automotive 200 race is held. This is Round 3 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 5th in GT class and 15th overall is the Phoenix American Motorsports #32 Corvette, driven by Bill Lester, Stuart Hayner, and John Heinricy.
    • Finishing 1st in AGT class and 16th overall is the Team X-1R #09 Corvette, driven by Craig Conway and Doug Goad.

  • 2002 - At the Phoenix International Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona, the UnitedAuto 200 race is held, Round 4 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 1st in AGT class and 6th overall is the Flis Motorsports #90 Corvette, driven by Paul Menard and James Briody.
    • Finishing 2nd in AGT class and 7th overall is the Flis Motorsports #09 Corvette, driven by Craig Conway and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 4th in AGT class and 13th overall is the Morgan Dollar Motorsports #46 Corvette, driven by Stephen Richards, Andrew Richards, and Rob Morgan.
    • Finishing 6th in AGT class and 19th overall is the ACP Motorsports #19 Corvette, driven by Kerry Hitt and Brad Stout.
    • Finishing 7th in AGT class and 23rd overall is the Dick Greer - Wendy's #82 Corvette, driven by Jack Willes and Dick Greer.

  • 2007 - At the JAGFlo Speedway at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas, the Lone Star Grand Prix race is held, round four of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in LMGT1 class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6.R driven by Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen.
    • Finishing 2nd in LMGT1 class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler decides to attack Crete, to remove it as a base of British operations. Code name for the plan is Operation Mercury.
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, the British 8th Army ceases its attack on Enfidaville due to losses.
  • 1945 - The Soviet government concludes a treaty of alliance with the Lublin administration of Poland.
  • 1945 - Soviet forces first enter Berlin, Germany.
  • 1970 - Netherlands issues a postage stamp marking the 25th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1994 - Wallis and Futuna Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, France.
  • 1995 - Malta issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.
  • 2000 - Japan issues four postage stamps with World War II related themes, part of a series on the Millenium.
  • 2005 - Nauru issues eleven postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Kiribati issues eleven postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Solomon Islands issues eleven postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 2000 - SonicTeam is founded in Tokyo, Japan.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Nintendo DS handheld video game system in Japan in two new case colors: Turquoise Black and Candy Pink.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Nintendogs video game for the Nintendo DS in Japan.

Swedish history:

  • 2008 - 3000 nurses walk off jobs, seeking higher wages.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1985 - The first A & W restaurant opens in Indonesia, in Melawi township, Jakarta.

USA coin history:

  • 1787 - Congress authorizes James Jarvis & Co. to coin 300 tons of copper cents.
  • 1835 - US special diplomatic agent Edmund Roberts receives 1834 Proof set to take to King of Siam.
  • 1838 - The Dahlonega Branch Mint begins striking its first coins, 1838 Classic Head half eagles, first US coins with a "D" mint mark.
  • 1862 - Congress establishes the Denver Assay Office.
  • 2022 - The Commission of Fine Arts recommends designs for the 2023 Native American dollar and five 2023 American Women quarter dollars. All designs are those recommended by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Comittee.

Sports history:

  • 1898 - Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher Bill Duggleby hits a grand slam on first at bat.
  • 1910 - Cleveland Naps play first game at League Park, lose to Detroit Tigers 5-0.
  • 1921 - Ottawa Senators beat Vancouver Millionaires three games to two for hockey's Stanley Cup.
  • 1934 - Moe Berg, Washington Senators' catcher, plays American League record 117th consecutive errorless game.
  • 1940 - Netherlands beats Belgium 4-2 in soccer.
  • 1944 - NFL Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers merge (dissolves on December 3).
  • 1948 - Second NBA Championship: Baltimore Bullets beat Philadelphia Warriors, 4 games to 2.
  • 1951 - 5th NBA Championship: Rochester Royals beat New York Knicks, 4 games to 3.
  • 1951 - NHL Stanley Cup: Toronto Maple Leafs beat Montreal Canadiens, 4 games to 1.
  • 1955 - Brooklyn Dodgers win record 10th straight game since beginning of a season.
  • 1957 - Marlene Hagge wins LPGA Babe Didrikson-Zaharias Golf Open.
  • 1963 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Sunshine Women's Golf Open.
  • 1964 - Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs combine for nine homeruns, Pirates win 8-5.
  • 1967 - Los Angeles Dodgers first rain-out in Los Angeles (after 737 consecutive games).
  • 1968 - Carol Mann wins LPGA Lady Carling Golf Open.
  • 1969 - Record 1,152 starters compete in Boston Marathon.
  • 1969 - 73rd Boston Marathon won by Yoshiaki Unetani of Japan in 2:13:49.
  • 1970 - Sportscaster Curt Gowdy receives the George Foster Peabody Award for achievement in radio and television, the first sports broadcaster to receive the honor.
  • 1974 - Third Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Jo Ann Prentice.
  • 1975 - 4th Boston Women's Marathon won by Liane Winter of Federal Republic of Germany in 2:42:24.
  • 1975 - 79th Boston Marathon won by Bill Rodgers of Massachusetts in 2:09:55.
  • 1977 - Billy Martin pulls New York Yankees line-up out of a hat, beats Toronto Blue Jays 8-6.
  • 1980 - 84th Boston Marathon won by Bill Rodgers of Massachusetts in 2:12:11.
  • 1980 - 9th Boston Women's Marathon won by Jacqueline Gareau of Canada in 2:34:28; Rosie Ruiz disqualified as women's champion; she hadn't run entire course.
  • 1982 - Atlanta Braves win their 13th straight game.
  • 1984 - Franz Weber of Austria skis downhill at a record 209.8 km/h.
  • 1984 - Montreal Expos' David Palmer no-hits Saint Louis Cardinals, 4-0 in a perfect five-inning game.
  • 1985 - Ingrid Kristiansen wins the London Marathon in a record 2:21:06.
  • 1985 - Patty Sheehan wins LPGA J&B Scotch Pro-Am Golf Tournament.
  • 1986 - 15th Boston Women's Marathon won by I Kristiansen of Norway in 2:24:55.
  • 1986 - 90th Boston Marathon won by Rob de Castella of Australia in 2:07:51.
  • 1986 - Bob Hering sets Formula One power boat record (165.338 mph, Arizona).
  • 1987 - Milwaukee Brewers lose, ending American League season-opening winning streak at 13 games.
  • 1987 - Richard Hadlee makes highest Test Cricket score of 151 (versus Sri Lanka).
  • 1988 - First four-day games in County Cricket Championship commence.
  • 1990 - Cincinnati Reds win, running their record to 9-0, best start in club history.
  • 1990 - National League umpire is arrested for stealing baseball cards.
  • 1991 - 52nd PGA Seniors Golf Championship: Jack Nicklaus wins.
  • 1991 - Greatest extra-inning comeback, Pittsburgh Pirates score 6 in bottom of 11th erasing 5 run Chicago Cubs lead, Pirates also trailed 7-2 in bottom of 9th.
  • 1991 - Jakov Tolstikov wins fourth World Cup marathon (2:09:17).
  • 1991 - Rosa Mota wins fourth World Cup female marathon (2:26:14).
  • 1994 - Eddie Murray sets record for switch hit homeruns in a game (11 times).
  • 1995 - Boston Celtics final game at Boston Gardens, New York Knicks win 98-92.
  • 1996 - 57th PGA Seniors Golf Championship: Hale Irwin.
  • 1996 - Barb Mucha wins LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Golf Championship.
  • 1996 - Matabeleland beats Mashonaland Country District to win Logan Cup.
  • 1997 - 101st Boston Marathon won by Lameck Aguta of Kenya in 2:10:34.
  • 1997 - 26th Boston Women's Marathon won by Fatuma Roba of Ethopia in 2:26:23.
  • 2008 - Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya wins his fourth Boston Marathon, with a time of 2:07:46. In the Woman's Marathon, Dire Tune of Ethiopia finishes in 2:25:25, beating Alevtina Bittimirova by two seconds, in the closest finish in the history of the race. Each winner earned a prize of US$150,000, the biggest in major marathon history.
  • 2008 - In Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a riot following the Montreal Canadiens' Game 7 win over the Boston Bruins breaks out on Ste-Catherine Street West, resulting in sixteen police cruisers torched a dozen stores vandalized, and sixteen arrests.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Seattle Mariners by score 8-6.
  • 2022 - At Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Pittsburgh Pirates beats Chicago Cubs by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, USA , Major League Baseball regular season game: Miami Marlins beats Saint Louis Cardinals by score 5-0.
  • 2022 - At Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Washington Nationals by score 4-3.

  • 1794 - New York City formally declares coast of Ellis Island publically owned, so they can build forts to protect New York City from British.
  • 1828 - Noah Webster publishes first American dictionary.
  • 1838 - The Dahlonega Branch Mint in Georgia, USA begins striking its first coins, 1838 Classic Head half eagles, first US coins with a "D" mint mark.
  • 1856 - First railroad bridge across Mississippi River, from Rock Island, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa.
  • 1862 - US Congress establishes the Denver Assay Office in Colorado.
  • 1874 - President Ulysses Grant vetoes a bill to increase greenbacks in circulation by $100 million.
  • 1878 - The ship Azor leaves Charleston, South Carolina, with 206 blacks for Liberia.
  • 1892 - Black longshoremen strike for higher wages in Saint Louis, Missouri.
  • 1914 - US marines occupy Vera Cruz, México (they stay six months).
  • 1919 - The US Victory Liberty Loan offers $4.5 billion in bonds.
  • 1930 - Fire (set as part of an escape attempt) at Ohio State Penitentiary kills 320.
  • 1945 - US 7th Army occupies Neurenberg, Germany.

  • 1954 - In the Foley Square U.S. Courthouse in New York, a congressional subcommittee begins a three-day televised investigation of the causes of juvenile delinquency. The comic-book industry is vilified, leading to laws in several states restricting comic sales, and industry self-censorship.
  • 1962 - (to October 12) The Century 21 Exposition is held in Seattle, Washington, USA.
  • 1965 - New York World's Fair re-opens for second and final season.
  • 1968 - 22nd Tony Awards: Rosencranz and Guilderstern and Hallelujah Baby! win.
  • 1976 - Swine Flu vaccine, for non-epidemic, enters testing.
  • 1981 - US furnishes US$1 billion in arms to Saudi Arabia.
  • 1982 - Dutch Queen Beatrice addresses US Congress.
  • 1983 - Scandal-plagued Jackie Presser is elected president of the Teamsters.
  • 1984 - Centers for Disease Control says virus discovered in France causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
  • 1986 - Geraldo Rivera opens Al Capone's secret vault on live TV show The Mystery of Al Capone's Vault and finds nothing inside.
  • 1987 - Dow Jones Industrial Average soars 664.7; second biggest one-day gain in history.
  • 1992 - Robert Harris, murderer, executed in California's gas chamber at age 39.
  • 1995 - FBI arrests Timothy McVeigh and charges him with Oklahoma City bombing.
  • 2008 - Bank of America, the largest American retail bank, reports a 77 percent decline in the quarter ending March 31, the third straight quarterly loss. The loss included over US$5 billion in write-downs and credit-related costs.
