Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Osborne Computer introduces The Osborne Executive portable computer. It features 4 MHz Z80A CPU, 128 kB RAM, 7-inch amber monitor, 24x80 text, detachable keyboard, two 204 kB 5.25-inch disk drives, two serial and one parallel ports, CP/M Plus, UCSD p-System, Wordstar, Supercalc, MBASIC, CBASIC, Personal Pearl. Weighing 28 pounds, it is priced at US$2495.
  • 1983 - Osborne Computer introduces The Osborne Executive II portable computer. It is like the Executive, and adds a coprocessor board with a 4 MHz 8088 running MS-DOS or CP/M-86, and 630x200 graphics. Price is US$3195.
  • 1988 - Dell announces its first PC using IBM's Micro Channel bus.
  • 1989 - Quarterdeck Office Systems is granted a patent by the US Patent Office entitled "An Improved Display System and Memory Architecture and Method for Displaying Images in Windows on a Video Display". The technology allows multiple MS-DOS programs to run simultaneously in separate windows.
  • 2003 - Intel halts the release of the 3 GHz Pentium 4 with 800 MHz bus, due to an anomoly.
  • 2005 - Adobe Systems announces a US$3.4 billion bid to acquire Macromedia.
  • 2005 - Intel releases the 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 840 processor, with dual cores, each with 1 MB level 2 cache. The processor incorporates 230 million transistors. Price is US$999 in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Circus Daze to theaters. This film debuts Lois Hardwick as Alice, the fourth and final actor of the series.
  • 1930 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film Night.
  • 1936 - The Silly Symphony film Three Little Wolves is released to theaters.
  • 1947 - The Donald Duck film Straight Shooters is released. Huey, Dewey, and Louie also appear.
  • 1953 - The Mickey Mouse film The Simple Things is released. Pluto also appears.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel, a cable-TV network, begins broadcasting, at 7:00 AM, with a show called Good Morning, Mickey. The service runs for 18 hours per day.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel begins airing the EPCOT Magazine show.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel begins airing the series You and Me, Kid.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel begins airing the series New! Animal World.

  • 1997 - Joining of the two halves of the Disney Magic cruise ship is complete.
  • 1998 - Disney launches the Toon Disney cable television network.
  • 1998 - The name of the Festival of Foods area in Frontierland at Disneyland is changed back to Big Thunder Barbecue.
  • 1998 - The Hunchback of Notre Dame show in Frontierland at Disneyland closes.
  • 2002 - The Primeval Whirl roller coaster opens in Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama! in DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney's Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World.
  • 2003 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures film Holes to theaters in the US.
  • 2010 - The ABC Family Original Movie Beauty and the Briefcase airs.
  • 2014 - Disney releases the Disneynature film Bears to theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1959 - At the Marlboro Raceway in Maryland, the SCCA President's Cup race is held. Bill Mitchell's red Sting Ray racer makes its racing debut. Richard Thompson races it to fourth place overall, first in class.
  • 1971 - In Danville, Virginia, a 300-mile IMSA race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTO class and 2nd overall is the Or Costanzo #57 1969 Corvette L-88 driven by Dave Heinz.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 18th overall is the #15 Corvette driven by Mel Shaw and Cress Taylor.

  • 2002 - At the National Corvette Museum, the C5 Birthday Bash is held, over three days. The Museum raffles off a 2002 Electron Blue Z06 Corvette.
  • 2004 - At the Long Beach Street Circuit in Long Beach, California, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach race is held, round one of the Motorock Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 7th is the Hypermax Racing #83 Corvette, driven by Max Lagod.
    • Finishing 9th is the Simms Motorsports #24 Corvette, driven by Philip Simms.
    • Finishing 10th is the Derhag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 12th is the #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • In 13th place, but not finishing the race, is the #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • In 14th place, but not finishing the race, is the Lajas Racing #72 Corvette, driven by Edison Lluch.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - USSR leader Josef Stalin proposes a triple treaty defensive alliance of Great Britain, France, and the USSR against Germany.
  • 1940 - Allies land off Andalsnes, Norway.
  • 1942 - Pierre Laval becomes head of France Vichy Government.
  • 1942 - Japanese patrol boat The Nitto Maru spots US task force with aircraft carrier Hornet carrying bombers for mission over Japan. The boat is sunk, but is assumed to have alerted Japan of the location of the ships.
  • 1942 - The United States Army imposes a blackout of city lights on American east coast cities, to help protect ships from being seen by enemy submarines.
  • 1942 - (about 1215 hours) Sixteen American B-25 bombers lead by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle bomb Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kobe, Japan. The planes were launched from the carrier Hornet 668 miles off Tokyo. 73 of the 80 crew survive as the planes land and crash in China.
  • 1943 - US Navy planes shoot down the Japanese transport plane flying Admiral Isokuro Yamamoto (killing him) from Rabaul to the Solomon Islands. Sixteen American P-38G Lightening attack fighters from their base 430 miles away in Guadalcanal attack the three transport bombers and six Zero fighter planes. All but one P-38G fighter returns to base.
  • 1943 - (evening) 178 British bombers attack La Spezia, Italy, again. One destroyer is sunk, but the target three battleships are unharmed.
  • 1945 - 969 British bombers attack Heligoland island, destroying every building and most of the radar and flak defences.
  • 1945 - About 320,000 German troops in Army Group B surrender in the Ruhr.
  • 1945 - British 30th Corps begins operations against Bremen, Germany.
  • 1945 - Death of Ernie Pyle, war correspondent, on Okinawa, shot by Japanese gun fire.
  • 1990 - The Gambia issues fourteen postage stamps depicting British RAF World War II fighter planes.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1993 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the interception of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.

Video game history:

  • 2002 - Microsoft announces a price drop on the Xbox in the United Kingdom from 299 pounds to 199.99 pounds as of April 26.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - King Gustav Adolf arrives at Ingolstadt, a new fortress with excellent defences, a strong garrison under Tilly's nephew, and the Bavarian army nearby.
  • 1635 - Axel Oxenstierna and French Cardinal Richelieu sign the Treaty of Compiègne in Paris, France. Sweden gains control of the Rhine area from Breisach to Strasbourg, and France accepts Sweden as an equal ally, and agrees to declare war on Spain. Both parties agree to assist Protestants in Germany by force, and not to obtain a separate peace.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2013 - (to April 21) CICF show, Heritage Auction of Nikita Collection of Canadian Coins, Canada 1-cent 1936 with dot, MS-63 PCGS: US$210,000 + 17.5% buyer's fee.

USA coin history:

  • 1831 - The President authorizes coinage of silver dollars again.
  • 1911 - The Denver Mint strikes its first quarter eagles.
  • 2010 - (to April 24) National Coin Week, sponsored by the American Numismatic Association. This year's theme is "Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks".

Sports history:

  • 1869 - First international cricket match, held in San Francisco, is won by a Californian.
  • 1899 - John McGraw, at age 36, makes managerial debut as Baltimore Orioles' manager.
  • 1908 - Tommy Burns knocks out Jewy Smith in five for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1918 - Cleveland Indians' center fielder Tris Speaker turns an unassisted double play.
  • 1922 - Netherlands soccer team defeats Denmark 2-0.
  • 1923 - 74,000 (62,281 paid) on hand for opening of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, USA.
  • 1935 - General Sarazen's double eagle on the 15th wins him his second Masters tournament of golf.
  • 1942 - Stanley Cup: Toronto Maple Leafs beat Detroit Red Wings, 4 games to 3.
  • 1944 - 48th Boston Marathon won by Gerard Coté of Canada in 2:31:50.4. This is his second straight and third career win.
  • 1946 - Jackie Robinson debuts as second baseman for the Montreal Royals.
  • 1950 - First opening night-game, Saint Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-2.
  • 1950 - New York Yankees win 15-10 after trailing Boston Red Sox 9-0 in 6th inning.
  • 1954 - Louise Suggs wins LPGA Babe Didrikson-Zaharias Golf Open.
  • 1958 - National League single-game attendance record of 78,682, San Francisco Giants lose to Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5, in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1959 - NHL Stanley Cup: Montreal Canadiens beat Toronto Maple Leafs, 4 games to 1.
  • 1962 - 16th NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat Los Angeles Lakers, 4 games to 3.
  • 1963 - Stanley Cup: Toronto Maple Leafs beat Detroit Red Wings, 4 games to 1.
  • 1964 - Sandy Koufax is first to strike out the side on 9 pitches.
  • 1968 - First ABA basketball championship begins.
  • 1971 - Gavaskar makes 220 in second inning versus West Indies after 124 in first.
  • 1971 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Raleigh Golf Classic.
  • 1976 - Judy Rankin wins LPGA Karsten - Ping Golf Open.
  • 1977 - 6th Boston Women's Marathon won by Miki Gorman of California in 2:48:33.
  • 1977 - 81st Boston Marathon won by Jerome Drayton of Canada in 2:14:46.
  • 1977 - Baltimore Orioles' Eddie Murray hits his first homerun.
  • 1981 - A Minor League baseball game between the Rochester Red Wings and the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, becomes the longest professional baseball game in history: 8 hours and 25 minutes/33 innings (the 33rd inning is not played until June 23).
  • 1982 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA CPC Women's Golf International.
  • 1982 - Atlanta Braves win record 11th straight opening game (beat Houston Astros).
  • 1983 - 12th Boston Women's Marathon won by Joan Benoit Samuelson in 2:22:43.
  • 1983 - 87th Boston Marathon won by Greg Meyer of Massachusetts in 2:09:00.
  • 1987 - Bob Land wins his 6th straight Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race.
  • 1987 - Mike Schmidt hits 500th home run (vs. Robinson-Pittsburgh Pirates).
  • 1987 - Pat Knauff, France sets one-leg downhill ski speed record (115.012 mph).
  • 1988 - 17th Boston Women's Marathon won by Rosa Mota of Portugal in 2:24:30.
  • 1988 - 92nd Boston Marathon won by Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya in 2:08:43.
  • 1990 - Birmingham Fire issued an original franchise in the WLAF.
  • 1991 - John Stockton breaks his own NBA season assist record at 1,136.
  • 1991 - A sellout crowd of 42,191 watch the Chicago White Sox play their first game at new Comiskey Park and sees the home team get crushed by the Detroit Tigers, 16-0.
  • 1992 - Start of South Africa's first Test Cricket since 1970 (versus West Indies Bridgetown).
  • 1993 - 54th PGA Seniors Golf Championship: Tom Wargo.
  • 1993 - Trish Johnson wins LPGA Atlanta Women's Golf Championship.
  • 1994 - 23rd Boston Women's Marathon won by Uta Pippig of Germany in 2:21:45.
  • 1994 - 98th Boston Marathon won by Cosmas Ndeti of Kenya in 2:07:15.
  • 1994 - Brian Lara scores 375 for West Indies versus England to beat Sobers' world record.
  • 1995 - Quarterback Joe Montana announces his retirement from football.
  • 1999 - "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky plays his final National Hockey League game.
  • 2010 - Kevin Martin defeats Brad Gushue 8-7 at the Grey Power Players' Championship curling event, in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada.
  • 2021 - Twelve football clubs, including three from La Liga and leading clubs from the Premier League and Serie A, agree to join a new breakaway European Super League, prompting international condemnation.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Atlanta Braves by score 7-4.

  • 1846 - R.E. House of New York City receives a US patent for the telegraph ticker.
  • 1853 - US Vice President William King dies a month after his inauguration.
  • 1861 - Union forces marching from Pottsville, Pennsylvania to Washington DC encounter hostile crowd of Southern supporters in Baltimore. Oliver Christian Bosbyshell is hit by a brick, first Union injury of the war.
  • 1861 - Battle of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
  • 1861 - Colonel Robert E Lee turns down offer to command US armies.
  • 1862 - Union ships begin assault on New Orleans, beginning with mortar shelling of forts Saint Philip and Fort Jackson.

  • 1906 - At 5:13 a.m., an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over a segment about 275 miles long. An estimated 3,000 people die from the quake and fires. Almost 30,000 buildings are destroyed, including most of the city's homes and nearly all the central business district.

  • 2022 - The US government announces a unilateral moratorium on antisatellite missile tests.
