Personal computer history:

  • 1977 - The First Annual West Coast Computer Faire is held, in San Francisco's Brooks Civic Auditorium, over three days. 12,750 attended the weekend event.
  • 1997 - Samsung Electronics agrees to acquire the remaining 51 percent of AST Research, for US$5.40 per share, worth about US$170 million.
  • 1998 - Intel announces the 266 MHz Celeron processor with 32 kB Level 1 cache. The Celeron is a Pentium II processor with no secondary cache. Name of the processor was chosen with help from Lexicon Branding, Inc. Code-name during development was Covington.
  • 1999 - Bleem releases the bleem! PlayStation game emulator for Windows-based personal computers in the USA. Price is US$24.95 via Web site download.
  • 2010 - Uzbekistan issues a postage stamp depicting personal computers.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - The first issue of the Official Bulletin of the Mickey Mouse Club is published.
  • 1932 - The Mickey Mouse film Barnyard Olympics is released. Pluto also appears.
  • 1938 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Nephews is released to theaters. Huey, Dewey, and Louie make their film debut.
  • 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Disneyland After Dark. The show marks the network TV debut of the Osmond Brothers.
  • 1964 - Disney lawyer Robert Foster leaves New York bound for Florida, to begin land purchases for Disney. He uses the name Robert Price to keep his identity secret.
  • 1971 - The last of 337 concrete beams completes the 6-mile long monorail transportation system for Walt Disney World, and the first Martin-Marietta Mark IV Monorail train is lowered onto the beam.
  • 1973 - The Walt Disney Story attraction and film opens on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1975 - The Flight to the Moon attraction at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1983 - Tokyo Disneyland opens in Urayasu, just outside Tokyo, Japan, operated by the Oriental Land Company under licence from Disney. It includes several themed areas: Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Westernland, and World Bazaar.

  • 1939 - France's Foreign Minister Georges Bonnet suggests an annex be added to the Franco-Soviet pact of 1935 pledging Russian aid to France if attacked by Germany.
  • 1939 - British anbassador in Moscow Sir William Seeds requests Soviet Commissar for Foreign Affairs Maxim Litvinov to declare guarantee of Poland and Romania.
  • 1940 - (1200 hours) In Norway, the six day old Quisling Government comes to an end. On Oslo radio, Vidkun Quisling announces his resignation as head of the government.
  • 1942 - The British George Cross is awarded to the Island Fortress of Malta for their endurance and defiance against enemy forces.
  • 1945 - Adolf Hitler issues an order in the event that Germany is split into northern and southern areas. Admiral Karl Dönitz would be appointed Commander-in-Chief of the north, or General Field Marshal Albert Kesselring would be Commander-in-Chief of the south, with Hitler in charge of the other part.
  • 1957 - Malta issues three postage stamps commemorating the award, in 1942, of the George Cross to Malta for its war effort.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1870 - Last day US silver coins may circulate in Canada at par.
  • 1920 - The new small cent coin is officially released to circulation.
  • 1939 - A Proclamation sets the design and dimensions of the 1939 commemorative dollar coin.
  • 1985 - Royal Canadian Mint officials recommend to a House of Commons committee that the $1 bill be replaced by a new 11-sided, bronze-plated nickel $1 coin. The change could save the government $9 million per year.

USA coin history:

  • 1854 - In San Francisco, California, USA, the branch mint strikes the first "S" mint mark coin, a $20 gold piece.
  • 1974 - Treasury Secretary George Shultz approves regulations prohibiting export or melting of cents.
  • 2008 - In Chicago, Illinois, Bowers and Merena Auctions conducts the Chicago Rarities Sale auction. Some highlights:

  • 1989 - Largest lottery win to date in North America (US$69 million) drawn in Illinois.
  • 1992 - Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx loses its accreditation.
  • 1992 - William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley (Star Trek actors) inducted into National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
  • 1998 - Intel announces the 266 MHz Celeron processor with 32 kB Level 1 cache. The Celeron is a Pentium II processor with no secondary cache, making it cheaper and slightly less powerful, targeting home computer users.
  • 2002 - The Alameda Corridor transportation project in Los Angeles, California opens to rail traffic, ceasing operations of freight trains on the 120-year-old BNSF Harbor Subdivision.
  • 2006 - New York City officially opens the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Cost of construction was US$56 million.
  • 2010 - At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US President Barack Obama announces details of his new policy for the US space agency NASA. New spacecraft with new rocket booster systems are to be built so that by 2025 manned missions can extend beyond the Moon, and to Mars and back by the mid-2030s. New funding would amount to US$6 billion over the next five years.
  • 2013 - Two bombs explode near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, killing 3 and injuring 264 others. Two Chechen Islamist brothers are suspected of planting the explosives.
  • 2014 - Odyssey Marine Explorations recovers over $1 million in gold ingots and US coins from the wreck site of the SS Central America off South Carolina.
