Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - John Sculley holds his first executive staff meeting at Apple Computer.
  • 1987 - The April 13 issue of Business Week magazine features Bill Gates on the cover.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer stops sales of the Power Mac G4 667 computer.
  • 2004 - Microsoft and EEye Digital Security announce a security vulnerability in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASRV.DLL file) of Windows. Microsoft releases a patch to resolve the problem.
  • 2005 - PalmOne releases the Tungsten E2 handheld computer. It features Bluetooth wireless connection, 32 MB nonvolatile flash memory, 200 MHz Intel XScale processor, and color screen. Price is US$249.
  • 2010 - Apple updates its line of high-end MacBook Pro laptops with faster Intel processors, better Nvidia graphics chips and longer battery life (8-10 hours). Prices start at $1199 for the 13-inch model.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - Disney officially announces its film distribution contract with United Artists.
  • 1935 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Kangaroo is released to theaters. Pluto also appears. This is the last black-and-white Disney cartoon.
  • 1980 - The TV show Disney's Oscar Winners airs.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled A Fighting Chance.
  • 1988 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters and Olympic events.
  • 1988 - Grenada Grenadines issues eight postage stamps depicting various Disney characters participating in Olympic events.
  • 1992 - Lesotho issues five postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in Spanish costumes.
  • 1999 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Beloved on videocassette.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US.
    • Inside a human body, a tour guide says "The small intestine is a high-intensity flume ride. People, you will get wet.", a reference to Disneyland's Splash Mountain attraction.
    • Characters visit "Kidneyland", a reference to Disneyland, with a large castle.
    • A man at the park is "Walt Kidney", a reference to Walt Disney.
    • A tiny flying pixie is called "Tinklebell", a reference to Tinkerbell.

  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A child seeks to repress an unwanted memory by saying "I am at Disneyland. Disneyland!".
  • 2008 - The FX Network airs the final episode of the Dirt TV series.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2000 - (to April 16) The National Corvette Museum hosts the Third Annual C5 Birthday Bash, organized by the Official C5 Registry. Through donations, US$40,000 is raised for the museum. Bob McDorman Chevrolet donates a 2000 Magnetic Red Convertible to the National Corvette Museum, for use by the executive director.
  • 2003 - At the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Miami, Florida, the Miami 250 race is held, round two of the Grand-Am Cup series.
    • Finishing 5th in GSI class and 5th overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 6th in GSI class and 6th overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette, driven by Mike Weinberg.
    • Finishing 11th in GSI class and 39th overall is the Silverstone Racing Services #39 Corvette, driven by Larry Huang and Chris Hall.

  • 2003 - At the Downtown Streets of Long Beach circuit, in Long Beach, California, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is held, round two of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
    • Finishing 6th is the Revolution Motorsports #2 Corvette, driven by Stuart Hayner.
    • Finishing 8th is the Revolution Motorsports #10 Corvette, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 10th is the ROH Wheels #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • Finishing 14th is the Derhaag Motorsports #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • Finishing 18th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.

  • 2019 - At the Grand Prix of Long Beach raceway in Long Beach, California, USA, the Bubba Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach race is held, round 3 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT Le Mans class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - England and France issue guarantees to Romania.
  • 1940 - (mid-day) British battleship Warspite and nine destroyers including HMS Cossack sink seven German destroyers in the Narvik fjord, including Diether von Roeder, Erich Koellner, and Hermann Kunne. Aircraft from carrier Furious support the ships, with one plane sinking German submarine U64.
  • 1940 - (1415 hours) Off Narvik, Norway, British destroyer Cossack and German destroyer Bruno Heineman battle, with British destroyer Foxhound firing the shot that sinks Bruno Heineman. Cossack runs aground, but remains in working order.
  • 1940 - Off Narvik, Norway, British destroyers Eskimo, Forester, and Hero, force German destroyer Georg Thiele to run aground, and sink.
  • 1940 - Off Narvik, Norway, British destroyers corner and sink German destroyers Hans Ludemann, Wolfgang Zenker, and Bernd von Arnim.
  • 1940 - (evening) British Hampden planes begin minelaying in Danish and German waters. Code name of this operation is Gardening.
  • 1941 - The Yugoslav capital of Belgrade is occupied by German forces.
  • 1941 - Japan and the Soviet Union sign a five-year non-aggression pact.
  • 1942 - American destroyer USS Roper sinks German submarine U-85 off Nags Head, North Carolina. This is the first American surface ship to sunk a submarine.
  • 1943 - Beginning of Warsaw ghetto uprising.
  • 1943 - (evening) 211 British bombers attack La Spezia, Italy, especially the naval base with three battleships in port. Four Lancaster bombers are shot down. The battleships are unharmed.
  • 1944 - The American government requests Sweden to unconditionally stop exporting ball bearings and special steel machinery to Germany.
  • 1945 - The Soviet Red Army occupies Vienna, Austria.
  • 1995 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Katyn Forest Massacre.
  • 2005 - Russia issues a postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Vienna, Austria, by Soviet troops.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Atari signs a long-term agreement with Williams Electronics, giving Atari first refusal rights to Williams' coin-operated games for home video games and computer games.
  • 1992 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. An Asteroids arcade video game appears.
  • 2010 - Ubisoft releases the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction video game for the Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1633 - Axel Oxenstierna concludes a treaty establishing the League of Heilbronn, joining the Swabian, Franconian, and Upper and Lower Rhenish, mostly in south-west Germany.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 2004 - A & W Restaurants is granted a registered trademark of a drawing with text "THICKSTER" as applied to sandwiches.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1957 - A Proclamation sets the design of the dollar coin, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the gold rush and creation of British Columbia as a Crown colony.
  • 1982 - The Supply and Services Minister announces that the commemorative nickel dollar would be struck in circulation quality only.

USA coin history:

  • 1904 - US Congress authorizes Lewis and Clark Expo $1 gold coin.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes 1936 Long Island Tercentenary commemorative half dollar.
  • 2011 - The US Mint launches the 2011 Glacier National Park quarter dollar in Columbia Falls, Montana.

Sports history:

  • 1908 - Groundbreaking on Philadelphia's Shibe Park (home of Philadelphia Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies).
  • 1911 - Polo Grounds grandstand and left field bleachers go up in flames.
  • 1914 - First US Federal League baseball game: Baltimore Terrapins beat Buffalo Blues3-2.
  • 1923 - Army wins the first college three-weapon fencing championship.
  • 1926 - At age 41, Walter Johnson pitches his 7th opening day shutout.
  • 1927 - NHL Stanley Cup: Ottawa Senators beat Boston Bruins, in two games and two ties.
  • 1933 - NHL Stanley Cup: New York Rangers beat Toronto Maple Leafs, three games to one.
  • 1940 - Cornelious Warmerdam becomes the first man to pole vault 15 feet, Berkeley, California.
  • 1940 - Stanley Cup: New York Rangers beat Toronto Maple Leafs, 4 games to 2.
  • 1944 - NHL Stanley Cup: Montreal Canadiens sweep Chicago Blackhawks in four games.
  • 1946 - Eddie Klepp, a white pitcher signed by defending Negro League champion Cleveland Buckeyes, is barred from field in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • 1949 - Third NBA Championship: Minneapolis Lakers beat Washington Capitals, 4 games to 2.
  • 1949 - Minneapolis beats Washington, 4 games to 2, for the NBA championship.
  • 1953 - First game of Milwaukee Braves, they beat Cincinnati Reds 2-0.
  • 1954 - Baltimore Orioles' first game, lose to Detroit Tigers in Detroit 3-0.
  • 1957 - 11th NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat Saint Louis Hawks, 4 games to 3.
  • 1962 - Stan Musial scores his 1,869th run, a new National League record.
  • 1963 - Pete Rose triples for his first major league base hit.
  • 1963 - Pittsburgh Pirates' Bob Friend balks four times in a game.
  • 1969 - 33rd Golf Masters Championship: George Archer wins, shooting a 281.
  • 1970 - 34th Golf Masters Championship: Billy Casper wins, shooting a 279.
  • 1970 - Oakland Athletics use gold-colored bases during the club's home opener; Rules Committee subsequently bans this innovation.
  • 1972 - First baseball players' strike ends after 13 days.
  • 1975 - 39th Golf Masters Championship: Jack Nicklaus wins, shooting a 276.
  • 1976 - First NBA playoff game for Cleveland Cavliers, they lose 100-95 to Washington Bullets.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees defeat Chicago White Sox 4-2 in home opener on Reggie Candy Bar Day; Jackson slugs a three-run homerun in the first inning, and the field is showered.
  • 1979 - Longest doubles ping-pong match ends after 101 hours.
  • 1980 - 44th Golf Masters Championship: Seve Ballesteros wins, shooting a 275.
  • 1980 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA American Defender/WRAL Golf Classic.
  • 1980 - Soviet news agency TASS denounces US boycott of the Moscow Summer Olympics.
  • 1984 - India beats Pakistan by 58 runs to win first Asia Cricket Cup in Sharjah.
  • 1984 - On the same date he got his first major league hit 21-years earlier, Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos makes hits 4000th hit.
  • 1985 - Katrin Dörre wins first female World Cup marathon (2:33:30).
  • 1986 - 50th Golf Masters Championship: Jack Nicklaus wins, shooting a 279.
  • 1986 - Boston Celtics end season with a 40-1 home win record.
  • 1986 - Patty Sheehan wins LPGA Kyocera Inamori Golf Classic.
  • 1986 - Spanish Grand Prix decided by 0.014 of a second.
  • 1987 - First three San Diego Padres' players hit homeruns off San Francisco Giants starter Roger Mason.
  • 1990 - Fourth largest NBA crowd (45,458) see Orlando Magic play at Minneapolis Timberwolves.
  • 1990 - New York Rangers beat New York Islanders 6-5, Rangers win preliminary, 4-1.
  • 1990 - The first sellout in Seattle Mariners' history occurs when 54,597 fans attend the season opener at the Kingdome.
  • 1991 - BPAA US Open won by Pete Weber.
  • 1992 - Longest two undefeated baseball teams to meet (New York Yankees 5-0 vs Toronto Blue Jays 6-0); New York Yankees score 3 in top of 9th to win 5-2.
  • 1992 - Lou Conaseca retires as coach of Saint John's basketball team.
  • 1994 - United Arab Emirates' first official ODI, losing to India.
  • 1995 - New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 2-0.
  • 1996 - Ottawa Senators eliminate Stanley Cup champions New Jersey Devils from playoff.
  • 1997 - First time since 1961 that two doubleheaders are played in the same city - San Francisco Giants versus New York Mets and Oakland Athletics vs New York Yankees in New York.
  • 1997 - 48th time opposing pitchers hit homeruns, Carlos Perez (Mon)/Darren Holmes.
  • 1997 - In Augusta, Georgia, 21-year-old Eldrick "Tiger" Woods wins the 61st Golf Masters Tournament by a record 12 strokes (total 270; 18 under par), his first victory in one of golf's four major championships, the greatest performance by a professional golfer in more than a century, and the youngest golfer to win the Masters.
  • 1997 - Hartford Whalers last NHL game.
  • 1997 - NHL Pittsburgh Penguins' player Mario Lemieux's last NHL regular game.
  • 1997 - Travis Fryman homers off R Hernandez in both games of double header.
  • 2004 - At SBC Park in San Francisco, Barry Bonds hits his 661st career homer to move up to third on the all-time homer run career list.
  • 2008 - In Augusta, Georgia, the final round of the U.S. Masters golf tournament is held. Trevor Immelman wins by three shots over Tiger Woods, with a score of 75, the first South African to win the U.S. Masters in 30 years.
  • 2019 - At the Grand Prix of Long Beach raceway in Long Beach, California, USA, the Bubba Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach race is held, round 3 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 1796 - First elephant arrives in US from Bengal, India.
  • 1860 - First Pony Express mail delivery reaches Sacramento, California.
  • 1861 - After 34 hours of bombardment, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrenders Fort Sumter in South Carolina to Confederates.
  • 1863 - Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled in New York is first orthopedic hospital.
  • 1863 - Battle of Irish Bend, Louisiana (Fort Bisland).
  • 1865 - Battle of Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • 1870 - Metropolitan Museum of Art forms in New York City.
  • 1873 - Colfax Massacre in Grant Parish, Los Angeles (60 blacks killed).
  • 1902 - JC Penney opens his first store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA.
