Personal computer history:

  • 1988 - IBM announces it will license its patents on the Micro Channel architecture to competitors.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. In the opening credits is "Bender's Humor by Microsoft Joke".

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1933 - The Mickey Mouse film Ye Olden Days is released to theaters. Dippy Dog (Goofy) and Minnie Mouse also appear.
  • 1933 - The Silly Symphony film Father Noah's Ark is released to theaters.
  • 1949 - The Donald Duck film Sea Salts is released.
  • 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Von Drake in Spain, with Ludwig von Drake.
  • 1973 - The Walt Disney Story attraction and film opens on Main Street at Disneyland.
  • 1974 - The Treasure Island nature preserve opens to the public at Walt Disney World.
  • 1992 - The Gambia issues five postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in Chicago.
  • 1992 - The Gambia issues ten postage stamps depicting Mickey Mouse as Christopher Columbus.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Holy Matrimony to theaters.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A sitting robotic Abraham Lincoln stands and talks, a reference to Disneyland's Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction.
  • 2002 - Albania issues four postage stamps depicting Bambi and Thumper.
  • 2006 - The Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast attraction opens at Disneyland Paris.
  • 2008 - Disney announces plans for ten new animated films over the next four years.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1989 - The SCCA Corvette Challenge race series begins its second season, at the Dallas Grand Prix, in Texas.
  • 2001 - At the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in Long Beach, California, Round Two of the SCCA - BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st is the G2 Performance Parts #28 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 6th is the Justin Bell GT Motorsports Experience #40 Corvette, driven by Justin Bell.
    • Finishing 8th is the Banner Engineering #66 Corvette, driven by Ken Wilden.
    • Finishing 10th is the Cenweld Corporation #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • Finishing 12th is the TWC Motorsport #8 Corvette, driven by Tom Coleman.
    • Finishing 14th is the Stonier Transportation #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • Finishing 19th is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - (morning) The British government informs Norway that they are mining the leads along the coastal waters off Norway.
  • 1940 - Operation Wilfred begins, as British forces lay mines off the Norwegian coast.
  • 1940 - (about 0800 hours) British destroyer HMS Glowworm sinks German destroyer Bernd von Arnim off the Norwegian coast.
  • 1940 - British destroyer Glowworm rams German heavy cruiser Hipper off the Norwegian coast, putting Hipper out of commission for several weeks for repairs. Glowworm sinks, with 31 survivors of a crew of 149.
  • 1940 - The Argentine government issues a decree for the remaining crew of the Graf Spee to be interned on Martin Garcia Island, eight miles off the coast, due to recent disappearances of the men.
  • 1940 - (afternoon) Two German ships are torpedoed off the Norwegian coast.
  • 1940 - (evening) Norwegian coastal forts open fire on German warships, as a German invasion begins.
  • 1941 - (0800 hours) German tanks enter Salonika.
  • 1941 - The French Foreign Legion seizes the Eritrean port of Massaouah from Italian occupation.
  • 1941 - German 14th Corps under General von Kleist captures Nis, Yugoslavia.
  • 1941 - German forces break through the Metaxas Line in Greece.
  • 1941 - German General Erwin Rommel sends his main force to Mechili, attacking from east and west, forcing the surrender of British forces.
  • 1942 - (0755 hours) A floatplane from the Japanese battleship Haruna reports ships of the British Far Eastern Fleet dispersing 65 miles south of Ceylon.
  • 1942 - (1055 hours) 85 D3A planes of the Japanese naval force off Ceylon (one light carrier and several other ships) attack and sink the British light carrier Hermes. This is the first sinking of an aircraft carrier by ship-based planes.
  • 1942 - (1102 hours) Japanese planes of a naval force off Ceylon sink the Australian destroyer Vampire.
  • 1944 - In Burma, Kohima is surrounded by Japanese forces.
  • 1944 - Soviet forces under Marshal Ivan Konev cross the Pruth into Romania.
  • 1945 - At Flossenburg concentration camp, in Germany, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris is tried in court and found guilty.
  • 1945 - (evening) British bombers make a heavy attack on the Blohm and Voss submarine yards at Hamburg, Germany.
  • 1991 - Guinea issues seven postage stamps depicting World War II battles.

Video game history:

  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Dr. Mario 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US. Price is US$29.95.

Swedish history:

  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A character says "Don't kill me yet! I'm starting to come down with Stockholm syndrome!".

Sports history:

  • 1920 - LONGA soccer team forms in Tilburg.
  • 1935 - Second Golf Masters Championship: Gene Sarazen wins, shooting a 282.
  • 1939 - ACV soccer team forms in Axes.
  • 1941 - Joe Louis TKOs Tony Musto in 9 for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1943 - Stanley Cup: Detroit Red Wings sweep Boston Bruins in four games.
  • 1956 - 20th Golf Masters Championship: Jack Burke Jr wins, shooting a 289.
  • 1963 - Detroit Tigers claim young pitcher Denny McLain from the Chicago White Sox for US$25,000.
  • 1966 - AFL chooses 36-year-old Al Davis as commissioner.
  • 1969 - First Major League Baseball game in Canada - Montreal Expos beats New York Mets 10-9.
  • 1972 - Alvin Kallicharran scores 100 in his first Test Cricket innings versus New Zealand.
  • 1974 - Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth's record of 714 homers.
  • 1979 - 8th Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Sandra Post.
  • 1979 - People's Republic of China joins International Olympic Committee.
  • 1980 - New York Islanders' Potvin's two shorthanded goals tie NHL record vs Los Angeles Kings and set NHL record of two shorthanded playoff goals in one period.
  • 1981 - New York Islanders score nine goals against Toronto Maple Leafs in playoffs.
  • 1982 - Tracy Caulkins (19) wins her 36th US swimming title.
  • 1984 - 13th Nabisco Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Juli Inkster.
  • 1986 - Facing Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants' rookie Will Clark homers in his first major league at-bat.
  • 1986 - The Seattle Mariners' Jim Presley hits two home runs in the ninth and tenth innings helping Seattle to beat the California Angels, 8-4 in a dramatic comeback victory on Opening Day.
  • 1989 - One-handed pitcher Jim Abbott's debut, but lasts only 4 2/3 innings.
  • 1990 - 54th Golf Masters Championship: Nick Faldo wins, shooting a 278.
  • 1990 - Kris Monaghan wins LPGA Red Robin Kyocera Inamori Golf Classic.
  • 1991 - Jockey Bill Shoemaker paralyzed in a car accident.
  • 1991 - Major League Baseball umpires and baseball reach a 4-year agreement.
  • 1991 - Oakland Athletics Stadium becomes first outdoor arena to ban smoking.
  • 1993 - Cleveland Indians' Carlos Baerga is first to switch hit homeruns in same inning (vs New York Yankees).
  • 1994 - Atlanta Braves' pitcher Kent Mercker no-hits Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-0.
  • 1995 - BPAA US Open won by Dave Husted.
  • 1995 - Oliver McCall beats Larry Holmes in 12 for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1996 - Bruce Seldon TKOs Tony Tucker in 7 to win vacated WBA boxing title.
  • 2006 - Numbersixvalverde, ridden by Niall Madden, wins the Grand National at Aintree.
  • 2007 - Zach Johnson wins the 2007 Masters Tournament.

Space exploration history:

  • 1964 - Unmanned Gemini 1 launched.
  • 1966 - OAO 1, the first orbiting astronomical observatory, is launched.
  • 1993 - STS-56 (Discovery) launches into orbit.
  • 2010 - Europe's Cryosat-2 spacecraft is launched aboard a Dnepr rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan on a mission to map the Earth's ice cover, and successfully deployed into Earth's orbit.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1998 - A Force 5 tornado strikes the western portion of the Birmingham, Alabama area, killing 32.
  • 1999 - In China, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurs. Also felt in southern Hokkaido, northern Honshu and at Tokyo, Japan.
