Personal computer history:

  • 1992 - COMDEX/Spring '92 is held, in Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1992 - At the Comdex / Windows World conference, Microsoft unveils Windows 3.1, including scalable TrueType fonts. The software comprises over 3 million lines of code.
  • 1997 - Microsoft announces plans to buy WebTV Networks for US$425 million. The United States Justice Department begins a review of the merger.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A personal computer appears in a school classroom.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - The Mickey Mouse film The Castaway is released to theaters.
  • 1959 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Short Subjects, Live-Action Subjects) for the film Grand Canyon.
  • 1959 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Short Subjects, Documentary) for the film Ama Girls.
  • 1959 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Documentary, Features) for the film White Wilderness.
  • 1960 - Disney releases the sixteenth People and Places film, Japan, to theaters.
  • 1983 - The Disney-produced TV show Zorro and Son first airs on CBS.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled I-Man.
  • 1989 - The Gambia issues ten postage stamps depicting Mickey Mouse through the years.
  • 1989 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences appologizes to Disney for unauthorized use of the Snow White character on their televised Academy Awards show, and states that it would not re-use the filmed segment again.
  • 1990 - The Blue Ribbon Bakery shop opens on Main Street at Disneyland, in place of the Sunkist Citrus House.
  • 1990 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Ernest Goes to Jail to theaters in the US.
  • 1991 - The Disney Channel begins airing the animated series Darkwing Duck.
  • 1993 - The NBC TV network airs the two-hour movie Miracle Child. The film is based on the novel Miracle at Clement's Pond by Patricia Pendergraft.
  • 1994 - Tanzania issues fifteen postage stamps depicting various Disney characters.
  • 2000 - Albania issues four postage stamps depicting Donald Duck.
  • 2001 - Albania issues four postage stamps depicting Goofy.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Just Visiting to theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - At the Denver Auto Show, the Corvette show car #853 is on display.
  • 1956 - Chevrolet issues a bulletin to dealers regarding the 1956 Corvette. The base 210-hp engine with single carburetor is now available, and the 225-hp dual carburetor is now optional.
  • 1970 - The Corvette assembly plant shuts down, due to lack of parts, due to a Teamsters Union workers' strike.
  • 1986 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the IMSA Atlanta Journal/Constitution Grand Prix race is held. Finishing 1st in GTP class and 1st overall is the Hendrick Motorsports #52 Corvette GTP, driven by Sarel Van der Merwe and Doc Bundy. They set a new race average lap record speed of 120.951 MPH.
  • 2001 - At the Sebring International Speedway in Sebring, Florida, the Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring - GT race is held, part of the SCCA - Speedvision World Challenge Series.
    • Finishing 13th is the Flying Tiger Racing #73 Corvette C5, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 15th is the Grand Sport Racing #08 Corvette C5, driven by Paul Brown.
    • Finishing 16th is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette C5, driven by David Farmer.
    • Finishing 27th is the Pirate Racing #01 Corvette C5, driven by Bill Cooper.
    • Finishing 30th is the Grand Sport Speedway #04 Corvette C5, driven by Bobby Sak.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - German armed merchant raider Orion leaves Germany.
  • 1941 - (early) Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union sign a treaty of friendship, providing for "amicable relations" in the event of foreign attack.
  • 1941 - (0500 hours) The first wave of German Stuka bombers cross into Yugoslavia, beginning a three-day bombardment of Belgrade.
  • 1941 - (just after dawn) The German 12th Army under Field Marshal List crosses from Bulgaria into the Macedonia area of Yugoslavia.
  • 1941 - German battle cruiser Gneisenau is hit by a torpedo from British Coastal Command aircraft in Brest Roads, sustaining extensive damage.
  • 1941 - British forces capture Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from Italy.
  • 1941 - German forces invade Greece.
  • 1941 - (night) An ammunition ship in the Greek port of the Piraeus is hit by an air-raid, devastating the town.
  • 1945 - British Bomber Command is directed to discontinue area-bombing unless specifically directed.
  • 1945 - The US Army Air Force makes a successful raid on targets in Leipzig.
  • 1945 - (1520 hours) The Japanese Special Sea Attack Force, including battleship Yamato, cruiser Yahagi, and eight destroyers sail from Tokuyama in search of the American fleet near Okinawa.
  • 1945 - The Japanese navy and the 32nd Japanese Army launch a combined attack on US forces landing on Okinawa. 355 kamikaze planes attack the fleet, the largest such attack of the war.
  • 1945 - 3rd Canadian Division takes Zutphen in north-east Holland.
  • 1965 - Netherlands issues a postage stamp marking the 20th anniversary of liberation, depicting statues to the resistance movement.
  • 1988 - The USSR issues a postage stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the Soviet-Finnish peace treaty.
  • 1991 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia.
  • 2004 - Isle of Man issues twelve postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day.
  • 2005 - Azerbaijan issues a postage stamp for the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Swedish history:

  • 1974 - Music group Abba wins the Eurovision Song Festival with the song "Waterloo".

Canadian coin history:

  • 1937 - A Proclamation sets the designs of 1937 coins, to be current as of May 12. The obverse design by T. Humphrey Paget is used.
  • 1992 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 1992 0.925 fine silver dollar coin, commemorating the 175th anniversary of the Stagecoach service between Kingston and York. The design was created by Karsten Smith. Price is $23.95 for Proof quality, and $17.50 for uncirculated.
  • 1992 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 1992 $100 14k gold coin, commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Montreal. The design was created by Stewart Sherwood. Issue price is $239.85; mintage is limited to 55,000.

Sports history:

  • 1893 - Andy Bowen and Jack Burke box 7 hours 19 minutes to no decision in Saint Louis (111 rounds, longest bout in boxing history).
  • 1896 - First modern Olympic games begin in Athens Greece, as the Games of the I Olympiad are staged; 60,000 spectators welcome 280 athletes from 13 nations to the international competition of 43 events. James Connolly of the USA wins first Olympic gold medal in modern history.
  • 1900 - James J Jeffries knocks out Jack Finnegan in one for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1926 - Stanley Cup: Montréal Maroons beat Victoria Cougars (WHL), three games to 1.
  • 1935 - H Levitt sinks 499 basketball free throws, misses and sinks 371 more.
  • 1936 - Third Golf Masters Championship: Horton Smith wins, shooting a 285.
  • 1941 - 8th Golf Masters Championship: Craig Wood wins, shooting a 280.
  • 1947 - 11th Golf Masters Championship: Jimmy Demaret wins his second Masters golf tournament, shooting a 281.
  • 1949 - Stanley Christopherson, cricketer (1884, MCC President during WWII), dies.
  • 1952 - 16th Golf Masters Championship: Sam Snead wins his second Masters golf tournament, shooting a 286.
  • 1954 - NHL's Montreal Canadiens score three goals in 56 seconds in playoff game against Detroit Red Wings.
  • 1958 - Arnold Palmer wins first major golf tournament-the Masters.
  • 1968 - Firestone World Tournament of Champions won by Dave Davis.
  • 1973 - Roberto Clemente Day, Pittsburgh Pirates retire his number.
  • 1973 - New York Yankees' Ron Blomberg becomes first designated hitter, he walks.
  • 1974 - Firestone World Tournament of Champions won by Earl Anthony 11/16.
  • 1974 - New York Yankees' first home game at Shea Stadium, beat Cleveland Indians 6-1.
  • 1975 - Fastest hat trick by a Washington Capitals' player: 3 minutes 26 seconds (Stan Gilbertson).
  • 1978 - Karnataka beat Uttar Pradesh by inning and 193 to win Ranji Trophy.
  • 1979 - M Marie Widlow, softball pitcher (Hall of Fame 1957), dies at age 61.
  • 1980 - 9th Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Donna Caponi Young.
  • 1980 - Gordie Howe completes a record 26th hockey season.
  • 1982 - Largest crowd ever to see a baseball game in Minnesota 52,279.
  • 1985 - Bombay beats Delhi by 90 runs to win the Ranji Trophy final.
  • 1986 - 15th Nabisco Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Pat Bradley.
  • 1986 - Soccer ball juggled non-stop for 14:14 hours.
  • 1987 - Al Campanis appears on Niteline saying blacks may not be equipped to be in baseball management, sparking a racial controversy.
  • 1987 - Sugar Ray Leonard upsets Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
  • 1988 - New Jersey Devils' first playoff game; lose to New York Islanders 4-3 (overtime) in first round.
  • 1991 - Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona suspended for 15 month by Italian League for testing positive for cocaine use.
  • 1991 - Bill Ponsford, cricketer (Test average 48 22, first-class average 65 18), dies.
  • 1991 - New York-New Jersey Knights first home game (Giants Stadium) lose to Frankfurt 27-17.
  • 1992 - First game at Camden Field, Baltimore Orioles beat Cleveland Indians 2-0.
  • 1992 - 54th NCAA Men's Basketball Championship: Duke beats Michigan 71-51.
  • 1992 - Duke beats Michigan 71-51 for NCCA basketball championship.
  • 1992 - Oriole Park at Camden Yards opens, Baltimore Orioles beat Cleveland Indians 2-0.
  • 1993 - Florida Marlins first loss ever (4-2 to Los Angeles Dodgers).
  • 1994 - First scheduled Cleveland Indians night game at Jacobs Field is rained out.
  • 1996 - Albert Belle shows off his arm by hitting Sports Illustrated photographer Tony Tomsic in the hand prior to a game.
  • 1996 - Major League Soccer kicks off in the USA in front of an overflow crowd of 31,683 packed in Spartan Stadium to witness the historic first game. San Jose Clash forward Eric Wynalda scores the league's first goal in a 1-0 victory over D. C. United.
  • 1997 - 9th Seniors Golf Tradition: Gil Morgan wins.
  • 1997 - Annika Sorenstam wins LPGA Longs Drugs Challenge.
  • 1997 - Brad Faxon wins Freeport-McDermott Golf Classic.
  • 1997 - Jack Kent Cooke, NFL owner (Washington Redskins), dies at age 84.
  • 1997 - Twelve Bridges LPGA Classic.
  • 2009 - North Carolina Tar Heels overwhelms Michigan State Spartans 89-72 in the final of the NCAA Tournament.

Space exploration history:

  • 1965 - Intelsat 1 ("Early Bird") launched; first commercial geosynchronous communications satellite.
  • 1973 - US launches Pioneer 11 to Jupiter and Saturn.
  • 1982 - Space shuttle Columbia returns to Kennedy Space Center from White Sands.
  • 1984 - 11th Space Shuttle Mission (41-C)- Challenger 5 is launched; first time 11 people in space.
  • 1985 - US space shuttle Atlantis (OV-104) rollout at Palmdale.
  • 1997 - Progress M-34 Launch (Russia).

Extreme weather history:

  • 1936 - Tornado kills 203 and injures 1,800 in Gainesville Georgia.
  • 1977 - In Iran, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurs, about 800 kilometers northwest of Bandar Abbas. At least 348 killed, and damage over an area of approximately 150 square kilometers.
  • 1982 - A blizzard unprecedented in size for April dumps 1-2 feet of snow on the northeastern U.S., closing schools and businesses, snarling traffic, and canceling several major league baseball games.
  • 2009 - An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale in central Italy kills 281, injures 1500, and leaves about 17,000 homeless. The quake flattened houses, ancient churches and other buildings in 26 cities and towns. The damage is estimated at US$4 billion.
