Personal computer history:

  • 1989 - Compaq Computer introduces the Compaq Deskpro 286e computer in the USA. It features 1 MB RAM, five expansion slots, VGA graphics, and mouse port. Price is US$2699-3599, depending on configuration.
  • 2000 - U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Jackson issues his Conclusions of Law, ruling that Microsoft acted illegally to protect its operating system monopoly, and used its monopoly position to attempt to monopolize the market for Web browser software.
  • 2000 - Bill Gates states that Microsoft will file an appeal of the ruling of Judge Jackson.
  • 2000 - At the close of stock trading, Microsoft stock price is down 15% from the previous day's close.
  • 2002 - Sharp Electronics releases the Zaurus SL-5500 handheld computer in the US. It features the Lineo version of the Linux operating system, Intel 206 MHz StrongARM processor, 64 MB RAM, CompactFlash slot, Secure Digital slot, 320x240 pixel resolution 16-bit color screen, tiny keyboard, lithium-ion battery. Price is US$500; weight is 6.8 ounces.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - Horace Horsecollar is first used in the Mickey Mouse comic strip.
  • 1946 - Disney delivers the film Planning for Good Eating to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
  • 1946 - Disney delivers the educational film Environmental Sanitation to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
  • 1952 - Walt Disney submits a sketch of a "Fairy Land" to the Recreation and Parks commissioners on Riverside Drive between Disney studios and Griffith Park.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Disneyland the Park / Pecos Bill.
  • 1966 - The Midget Autopia attraction in Disneyland closes.
  • 1976 - The TV special America on Parade airs.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Track of the African Bongo.
  • 1983 - The Yong Feng Shangdian shopping gallery opens in the China pavilion in Worldshowcase at EPCOT Center.
  • 1984 - Reliance Group Holdings announces that it now owns 7.3% of Disney shares.
  • 1989 - Newsweek magazine features Mickey Mouse on the cover of its April 3rd issue, for an article on the Disney-MGM Studios park at Walt Disney World.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Straight Talk to theatres.
  • 1994 - Disney President and Chief Operating Officer Frank Wells dies in a helicopter accident.
  • 1997 - Disney buys a one-third share of Starwave, a Web design, content, and management company, for about US$100 million.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1985 - Tony Rudd, of Lotus Engineering, meets with the Corvette Group of the Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada division. They discuss the powertrain for the future Corvette, with the possibility of Lotus creating 4-value twin-cam heads for the L98 engine. The conclusion is that such a 400-hp configuration would not fit in the present Corvette. It is proposed that an entirely new engine be created to meet the desired power and fuel efficiency needs.
  • 2005 - At the St. Petersburg Temporary Circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg race is held, round two of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 3rd is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 8th is the Tom Oates Chevrolet #99 Corvette Z06, driven by Tom Oates.
    • Finishing 14th is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette C6, driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 15th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette Z06, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • In 24th place, but not finishing the race, is the Banner Engineering #6 Corvette C6, driven by Leighton Reese.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Adolf Hitler issues a directive to the Army High Command to prepare for an attack on Poland, code named Fall Weiss (Case White), to be ready to implement by September 1.
  • 1940 - Winston Churchill becomes director of Britain's armed forces.
  • 1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill directs ambassador in Moscow Sir Stafford Cripps to deliver message to Josef Stalin warning of threat of German attack.
  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 26: "Cooperation with our allies in the Balkans". Details are given of operations against Yugoslavia: Hungary will re-take the Babat of Temesvar (lost to Yugoslavia after World War One), Bulgaria will gain the disputed area of Macedonia, Rumania will guard frontiers with Russia and Yugoslavia.
  • 1941 - (night) German 3rd Recon Battalion gains Benghazi from the British.
  • 1944 - Planes of the British Fleet Air Arm attack German battleship Tirpitz in Altenfjord. Fourteen hits are scored, but damage is not serious.
  • 1945 - The Canadian 1st Army crosses the Rhine River into Germany, capturing Zevenaar.
  • 1962 - Poland issues three postage stamps commemorating the millions who died in concentration camps.
  • 1970 - Hungary issues two postage stamps marking the 25th anniversary of liberation.

Video game history:

  • 1990 - Namco releases the Splatterhouse video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1992 - NCS releases the Macross 2036 video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1992 - A United States District Court rules that Accolade infringed Sega Enterprises' copyright in creating Sega Genesis videogame cartridges. This ruling effectively outlaws disassembling computer programs.
  • 2005 - Activision releases the Doom 3 video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A prison inmate has a video game system.
  • 2007 - Konami shuts down online servers for Metal Gear Online.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the DSi in Europe.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Swedish forces storm and quickly capture Frankfort. 3000 of the garrison are killed, in reprisal for New Brandenburg.

Sports history:

  • 1868 - An Hawaiian surfs on highest wave ever, he rides a 50' tidal wave.
  • 1893 - First New South Wales versus Queensland F-C game, at Brisbane Exhibition Ground.
  • 1908 - Frank Gotch wins world heavyweight wrestling championship in two hours.
  • 1923 - Two "Black Sox" sue Chicago White Sox (unsuccessfully) for back salary.
  • 1930 - Stanley Cup: Montreal Canadiens sweep Boston Bruins in two games.
  • 1933 - Then longest North American hockey game requires a 1:44:46 overtime as Maple Leaf Ken Doraty scores to beat Canadiens 1-0.
  • 1935 - Yasuo Ikenada runs world record marathon (2:26:44).
  • 1936 - Al Carr knocks out Lew Massey on one punch, :07 of the first round (shortest boxing bout with gloves).
  • 1948 - First US figure skating championships held.
  • 1948 - US female Figure Skating Championship won by Gretchen Merrill.
  • 1948 - US male Figure Skating Championship won by Richard Button.
  • 1955 - Baltimore Orioles pull their first triple play (3-6-2 versus Kansas City Athletics).
  • 1955 - Louise Suggs wins LPGA Oklahoma City Golf Open.
  • 1962 - Jockey Eddie Arcaro retires after 31 years (24,092 races).
  • 1966 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Venice Ladies Golf Open.
  • 1966 - Tom Seaver signs with the New York Mets for a reported $50,000 bonus.
  • 1967 - 113 East Europeans attending World Amateur hockey championships in Vienna, Austria ask for political asylum.
  • 1976 - Philadelphia Flyers win record-tying 20th straight NHL home game.
  • 1977 - 6th Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Kathy Whitworth.
  • 1977 - Boston Bruins' Jean Ratelle scores his 1,000th NHL point.
  • 1981 - Arnie Boldt of Saskatchewan, Canada, jumps 6 feet 8.25 inches, with one leg.
  • 1982 - Buffalo Sabres' Gil Perrault scores his 1,000th NHL point.
  • 1983 - 12th Nabisco Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Amy Alcott.
  • 1983 - Second NCAA Women's Basketball Championship: Southern California beats Los Angeles Tech 69-67.
  • 1984 - Bombay beats Delhi on first innings to win Ranji Trophy.
  • 1985 - Major League Baseball Players' Association agrees to proposal of the team owners to expand the 1985 League Championship Series from the best-of-five games to best-of-seven.
  • 1987 - Bill Elliott sets NASCAR qualifying record of 212.809 mph at Talladega.
  • 1987 - Chicago Cubs trade Dennis Eckersley to Oakland Athletics for three minor league players.
  • 1988 - 17th Nabisco Dinah Shore Golf Championship won by Amy Alcott.
  • 1988 - 7th NCAA Women's Basketball Champion: Louisiana Tech beat Auburn 56-54.
  • 1988 - Mario Lemieux wins NHL scoring title, stopping Wayne Gretzky's seven-year streak.
  • 1988 - New Jersey Devils beat Chicago Blackhawks, 4-3 in overtime, to clinch their first ever playoff spot.
  • 1989 - 51st NCAA Men's Basketball Championship: Michigan beats Seton Hall 80-79 in overtime.
  • 1989 - New York Mets win 11th consecutive home opener 8-4 over Saint Louis Cardinals at Shea Stadium.
  • 1991 - Bo Jackson signs one-year contract with Chicago White Sox.
  • 1991 - Thomas Bos skates world record 3 km (3:65.16).
  • 1992 - First exhibition game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards; Baltimore Orioles beat New York Mets.
  • 1994 - 13th NCAA Women Basketball Championship: North Carolina beats Louisiana Tech 60-59.
  • 1994 - First roster of Silver Bullets (all-female pro baseball team) announced.
  • 1994 - 6th Seniors Golf Tradition: Ray Floyd.
  • 1995 - 57th NCAA Men's Basketball Championship: UCLA Bruins beats Arkansas 89-78.
  • 1996 - South Australia grab exciting draw versus Western Australia to win Sheffield Shield.
  • 1996 - Saint Francis Fighting Saints scores college baseball run record 71-1.
  • 1998 - World Ice Dance Figure Skating Championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Russians Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsyannikov win.
  • 2005 - Alex Sanchez becomes the first major league baseball player to be publicly identified under baseball's new steroid policy. The Tampa Bay outfielder will be suspended for ten days for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Space exploration history:

  • 1965 - First atomic powered spacecraft (SNAP) launched.
  • 1996 - A Lunar eclipse occurs.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1868 - An Hawaiian surfs on highest wave ever, he rides a 50' tidal wave.
  • 1974 - In the USA, 148 tornadoes are reported over an area covering a dozen states in the east, south and midwest killed approximately 315.
  • 1983 - In Costa Rica, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurs.

  • 1986 - US national debt hits $2 trillion.
