Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1986 - Tim Paterson of Falcon Technology writes to Microsoft, indicating an intent to sell its royalty-free DOS license. Microsoft replies indicating a willingness to buy back the license.
  • 1988 - Apple Computer files an 11-page copyright infringement suit in federal court in San Jose, California, accusing Microsoft of stealing visual display features of the Macintosh computer for use in Microsoft Windows 2.0. Apple claims Windows violates 13 different copyrights. Hewlett-Packard is also named as a defendant, for copyright violations in its New Wave software.
  • 1990 - In Washington, D.C., the AmiExpo trade show is held, over three days.
  • 1997 - Microsoft ships Office 97 Small Business Edition, for US$249.
  • 2000 - Dell Computer begins shipping personal computers with 1 GHz Pentium III processors.
  • 2000 - In Iowa, U.S. District Court dismisses a lawsuit by Microware Systems against Apple Computer, which claimed trademark violation by Apple of Microware's OS 9 operating system.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - The Mark Strand Theater in New York City premieres the Mickey Mouse film Plane Crazy, with a soundtrack.
  • 1931 - Columbia Pictures releases the Mickey Mouse film Traffic Troubles to theaters.
  • 1939 - The first Goofy film, Goofy and Wilbur, is released to theaters. Wilbur the grasshopper appears for the first time.
  • 1956 - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards an Emmy award (Best Action or Adventure Series, 1955) to the Walt Disney Studio for the Davy Crockett series on the Disneyland TV show.
  • 1956 - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards an Emmy Award (Best Producer of Filmed Series, 1955) to Walt Disney for the Disneyland TV show.
  • 1962 - The last Merry Menagerie comic strip is published in newspapers.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Kidnapped, part one.
  • 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled The Ranger of Brownstone.
  • 1971 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film The Barefoot Executive to theaters. John Ritter makes his motion picture debut.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Diamonds on Wheels, part two.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network debuts the series Herbie, the Love Bug.
  • 1991 - The World News Center area opens in Communicore East at EPCOT Center.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the film Pinocchio on laserdisc in Japan, for 4841-15450 Yen.
  • 1995 - Disney releases Pinocchio - The Making of a Masterpiece on laserdisc in Japan.
  • 1996 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • An early film character "Itchy the Lucky Mouse" has a name similar to Walt Disney's "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit".
    • A black and white film from 1919 shows a mouse (Itchy) with double circle ears like Mickey Mouse.
    • A film is shown, "Steamboat Itchy" dated 1928, like Steamboat Mickey.

  • 1999 - The Test Track attraction opens in Future World in Epcot.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character eats a page from a childrens' book, then says "Well, it's easier to chew than that Bambi video.", likely referring to the Disney film.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1954 - At the General Motors Training Center in San Fernando, California, Chevrolet dealers in the area learn sales and service information about Corvettes, then drive away 28 1954 model Corvettes to dealership lots.
  • 1973 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the pilot episode of The Magician airs on TV in the USA. The lead character drives a white 1973 Corvette coupe.
  • 1979 - At the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, the Coca-Cola Twelve Hours of Sebring International Grand Prix of Endrance is held, round two of the IMSA GTO championship.
    • Finishing 14th in GTO class and 37th overall is the Jones Ind. Racing #81 Corvette driven by Steve Faul, Herb Jones, Jr., and Fred Lang. The car is not running at the finish.
    • Finishing 18th in GTO class and 53th overall is the Motorcito Racing #03 Corvette driven by Tico Almeida, Rene Rodriguez, and Pepe Romero. The car is not running at the finish, due to engine failure.
    • Finishing 20th in GTO class and 57th overall is the Rick Thompkins #04 Corvette driven by Rick Thompkins and Dave Heinz. The car is not running at the finish, due to engine failure.
    • Finishing 23th in GTO class and 69th overall is the Fillingham Racing #48 Corvette driven by Sam Fillingham. The car is not running at the finish, due to engine failure.

  • 2001 - At the Sebring International Speedway in Sebring, Florida, the Exxon Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring race is held. This is round two of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 7th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R driven by Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins, and Franck Fréon.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTS class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Chris Kneifel.
    • Placing 16th in GT class and 29th overall is the Trinkler Racing, LLC #17 Corvette C5 driven by Owen Trinkler, Andy Lally, B. J. Zacharias. The car is not running at the finish, due to steering problems.

  • 2006 - At the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring race is held, round one of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 6th is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #87 Corvette C6, driven by Doug Peterson.
    • Finishing 7th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette Z06, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • Finishing 11th is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #26 Corvette C6, driven by Claudio Burtin.
    • Finishing 19th is the EG Braswell Construction #32 Corvette Z06, driven by Ed Braswell.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • In 27th place, but not finishing the race, is the Southwest Racing #40 Corvette C6, driven by Greg Weirick.
    • In 29th place, but not finishing the race, is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette C6, driven by Tony Gaples.

  • 2007 - At the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, the 55th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring race is held, round one of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in LMGT1 class and 7th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Max Papis.
    • Finishing 2nd in LMGT1 class and 8th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6.R driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, and Jan Magnussen.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - German submarine U-99 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship J.B. White south-west of the Faeroes Islands. Two die, 38 survive.
  • 1941 - British Convoy HX 112 on the Atlantic is attacked by German submarines. British destroyers Walker and Vanoc sink German submarine U-100, killing captain Joachim Schepke, responsible for sinking 200,000 tons of merchant shipping.
  • 1941 - British destroyers Walker and Vanoc sink German submarine U-99, capturing captain Otto Kretschmer, responsible for sinking 200,000 tons of merchant shipping.
  • 1942 - In Australia, American General Douglas MacArthur issues a message to the Filipino people: "I have come through, and I shall return.".
  • 1942 - Several ships in Göteborg, Sweden, loaded with special steels for Britain, are declared by the Swedish Supreme Court free to leave.
  • 1943 - Near Tunisia, the US 1st Infantry Division launches an attack on Gafsa, quickly driving out the Italian defenders without a fight.
  • 1945 - American forces complete the capture of Iwo Jima. Americans suffer 26,038 casualties, include 6821 dead. Of the 21,000 Japanese defenders, only 1083 survive.
  • 1945 - In the Bay of Biscay off France, German submarine U-878 torpedoes and sinks Canadian minesweeper HMCS Guysborough.
  • 1945 - Chinese forces capture Hsipaw on the Burma Road.
  • 1945 - (evening) British bombers attack Witten, Germany, in the Ruhr.
  • 1945 - (evening) British bombers attack Hanau, Germany, east of Frankfurt.
  • 1946 - Soviet troops begin leaving the Danish Bornholm island.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - Sega releases the Sonic Drift 2 video game for the Game Gear in the US.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A video arcade machine is used on board a space ship for blasting other ships.
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version video games for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2009 - Rockstar releases the Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars video game for the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2009 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Resistance: Retribution video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1792 - Jakob Johan Anckarström is arrested, and later executed.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1983 - At the Chicago Coin Fair in Chicago (over three days), Illinois, Action Coins purchases a 1916c gold sovereign, which came from England.
  • 1992 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases the first coins in the International Olympic Committee Centennial Coin Program, a 22K gold coin with face value $175, and two 0.925 fine silver coins with value $15.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - National Association of Professional Base-Ball players organized.
  • 1876 - First record high jump over 6 feet (Marshall Jones Brooks).
  • 1877 - Bill Midwinter completes Test Crickets' first 5-wkt haul, 5-78 versus England.
  • 1897 - British boxer Robert James Fitzsimmons knocks out American James Corbett in 14 rounds for the world heavyweight championship.
  • 1900 - Stanley Cup: Montréal Shamrocks sweep Halifax Crescents in 2.
  • 1902 - Stanley Cup: Montréal AAA beat Winnipeg Victorias, two games to 1.
  • 1906 - Stanley Cup: Montréal Wanderers beat Ottawa Silver 7, although both winning a game, Montréal outscores Ottawa 12-10.
  • 1908 - Quickest world heavyweight title fight (Tommy Burns knocks out Jem Roche in 88 seconds).
  • 1910 - DHC soccer team forms in Delft Netherlands.
  • 1917 - First exclusively women's bowling tournament begins in Saint Louis.
  • 1918 - US Ladies Figure Skating Championship won by Rosemary Beresford.
  • 1918 - US Men's Figure Skating Championship won by Nathaniel Niles.
  • 1951 - Test Cricket debut of Brian Statham, England versus New Zealand Christchurch.
  • 1953 - Bill Veeck says he will sell his 80 percent of Saint Louis Browns for US$2.475 million.
  • 1955 - NHL hockey player Maurice "Rocket" Richard is suspended, sparks 7-hour riot in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
  • 1961 - New York district attorney arrests professional gamblers who implicate Seton Hall players.
  • 1963 - Bob Cousy plays his last NBA game.
  • 1968 - Kathie Whitworth wins LPGA Saint Petersburg Orange Blossom Golf Open.
  • 1969 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Orange Blossom Golf Open.
  • 1970 - Peter O'Malley becomes CEO of Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • 1974 - Jane Blalock wins LPGA Bing Crosby Golf Classic International.
  • 1975 - Valeri Muratov skates world record 1000 metre (1:16.92).
  • 1976 - Malikov skates world record 1000 metre (1:15.76).
  • 1977 - Australia wins cricket Centenary Test by 45 runs, same result as 1877.
  • 1978 - Cincinnati Reds don green uniforms for Saint Patrick's Day.
  • 1979 - World Ice Dance Championship at Vienna won by N Linichuk and G Karponosov (USSR).
  • 1979 - World Ice Pairs Figure Skating Championship at Vienna won by Tai Babilonia and R Gardner (USA).
  • 1979 - World Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Vienna won by Linda Fratianne (USA).
  • 1979 - World Men's Figure Skating Championship in Vienna won by Vladimir Kovalev (USSR).
  • 1981 - FC Lisse, Dutch soccer team, forms.
  • 1983 - 70th hat trick in New York Islanders' history-Mike Bossy.
  • 1985 - Jane Blalock wins LPGA Women's Kemper Golf Open.
  • 1985 - Matti Nykanen of Finland set a world ski jump record of 623 feet.
  • 1987 - Sunil Gavaskar ends his Test career with an inning of 96 versus Pakistan.
  • 1988 - Highest scoring NCAA basketball game: Loyola-Marymnt 119, Wyoming 115.
  • 1990 - PBA National Championship Won by Jim Pencak.
  • 1991 - Penny Hammel wins Desert Inn LPGA Golf International.
  • 1994 - It is announced there is no smoking in Cleveland Indians' new ballpark.
  • 1996 - Aravinda De Silva gets 107 and 3-42 in cricket World Cup victory.
  • 1996 - Liselotte Neumann wins LPGA Ping/Welch's Golf Championship.
  • 1996 - Mike Tyson beats Frank Bruno in third round to gain Heavyweight title.
  • 1996 - Montreal Canadiens play first game in their new arena.
  • 1996 - Sri Lanka wins the Cricket World Cup by storming to a Seven wicket victory against the tournament favourite Australia.
  • 1998 - USA Women's Hockey Team beats Canada for first Olympic Gold medal.
  • 2005 - During over 11 hours of the Committee on Government Reform hearing concerning major league player use of steroids, Mark McGwire refuses to talk about the past and does not deny taking performance enhancing drugs.
  • 2009 - Martin Brodeur, goalie for the NHL's New Jersey Devils, wins his 552nd game, breaking the former NHL record.

Space exploration history:

  • 1958 - Navy launches Vanguard 1 into orbit (second US satellite), measures Earth shape.
  • 1992 - Russian manned space craft TM-14, launches into orbit.
  • 2009 - Space shuttle Discovery docks with the International Space Station, delivering the last set of solar wing panels.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1963 - Eruptions of Mount Agung Bali kills 1,500 Balinese.
  • 1973 - In Luzon, Philippine Islands, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurs. 78 buildings destroyed in Lopez and Calauag.
  • 1985 - Near the coast of Central Chile, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurs.
