- 1986 - Microsoft first sells shares to the public, on the New York Stock Exchange, for US$25.75 per share. The initial public offering raises US$61 million.
- 2002 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon XP 2100+ processor. Price is US$420 in 1000-unit quantities.
- 2003 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the Friends TV show in the USA.
- A laptop computer is used to edit a Web site.
- Someone says "I'm on my way to buy some PhotoShop software...".
- 1928 - Walt Disney leaves New York to return to Hollywood.
- 1937 - The first cels for Snow White and Seven Dwarfs are sent to the camera department.
- 1937 - The Silly Symphony film Woodland Cafe is released to theaters.
- 1947 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Scientific or Technical, Class III) to the Walt Disney Studio Sound Department for innovations in locating noise in sound tracks.
- 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Further Report on Disneyland.
- 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Highway to Trouble, with Donald Duck and his nephews.
- 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Run, Light Buck, Run.
- 1969 - Buena Vista generally releases the live-action feature film The Love Bug to theatres.
- 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Ghost of Cypress Swamp. This is the Disney studio's first made-for-television feature film.
- 1988 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled 14 Going on 30, part two.
- 2001 - Finland issues five postage stamps for the 50th anniversary of Donald Duck Comics in Finland.
- 2002 - Saint Thomas and Prince Islands issues a 15,00d postage stamp of Walt Disney in its "Famous Men" series.
- 2005 - Robert Iger is named next CEO of the Walt Disney Company.
- 1972 - Reynolds Metals Company, under contract to Chevrolet, begins building a body for the XP-895 Corvette prototype, duplicating the steel body in aluminum.
- 1991 - At the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association holds its Spring Fling III event, over four days. Jack Boxstrom enters No. 50 Corvette (early 1970s Corvette raced by John Greenwood) with John Greenwood driving. The car has to be withdrawn after three laps due to problems.
- 1992 - Twentieth Century - Fox Film Corporatrion releases the film My Cousin Vinny to theaters in the USA. Someone explains that the 1960s Corvette was one of three American cars to have independent rear suspension, and "which could never be confused with the Buick Skylark.".
- 2000 - Guyana issues a postage stamp depicting a 1968 Corvette.
- 2005 - In Chicago, Illinois, the Chevy / Vettefest show is held, over two days. Nearly 300 Corvettes are on show, with 40,000 people attending.
- 1941 - Wilhelm Keitel issues a supplement to Directive No. 21, laying down rules for administration of occupied Russia.
- 1942 - (evening) 135 British aircraft attack Cologne, Germany, starting 237 fires, destroying or damaging several factories and over 1500 houses.
- 1943 - While escorting a convoy to Gibraltar, RMS corvette Prescott sinks submarine U-163 in the Bay of Biscay.
- 1943 - In Smolensk, a bomb disguised as two bottles of brandy is put on board Adolf Hitler's personal Focke-Wulf 200 Condor plane. The detonator activates, but due to cold temperature, the plastic explosives do not detonate.
- 1944 - In the North Atlantic, several Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Navy, and United States Navy ships and planes sink German submarine U-575.
- 1944 - (evening) British bombers attack railway targets in Le Mans, France.
- 1945 - 270 American B-29 bombers drop incendiary bombs on Osaka, Japan.
- 1945 - British bombers attack Wuppertal-Barmen, Germany.
- 1945 - A German submarine torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship Tabor Park in a coastal convoy in the North Sea.
- 1946 - British Admiralty reports on British losses on the Murmansk run during the war: 19 British warship sunk, 30 merchant ships sunk, 19 other warships damaged, 8 other merchant ships damaged, 2055 navy men killed, about 525 men of the Merchant Marine killed.
- 1946 - Yugoslav forces capture former War Minister General Draja Mikhailovitch hiding in a mountain cave, guarded by eleven soldiers. He is accused of collaboration with Nazis.
- 1996 - In New York, Apple Computer and Bandai demonstrate the Pippin Atmark multimedia system, to recruit software developers.
- 1631 - Imperial army leader Tilly captures New Brandenburg, defended by 2000 Swedish forces. Only 60 survive.
- 1809 - In Stockholm, General Carl Johan Adlercreutz and six officers arrest King Gustav IV Adolf in his castle.
- 1809 - Duke Karl forms a Regency.
- 1810 - A group favoring the return of Gustav IV Adolf's son calls off a planned coup, due to King Karl XIII refusing to cooperate.
- 1965 - A funeral is held for the late Queen Louise in Stockholm's Great Church in the Old City.
- 2004 - Revenue Minister Stan Keyes says Canada will be the first country to circulate a colored coin, one which will honor war veterans with a red poppy.
- 2006 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 Architectural Treasures coin, second coin in the series. The coin depicts Toronto's CN Tower, marking the 30th anniversary of the structure. The $20 0.9999 silver coin is struck in Proof with a hologram. Mintage limit is 15,000. The design was created by Jianping Yan.
- 1878 - Oxford defeats Cambridge in their first golf match.
- 1911 - Stanley Cup: Ottawa Senators beat Galt (Ontario), 7-4.
- 1912 - Stanley Cup: Québec Bulldogs sweep Moncton (New Brunswick) in two games.
- 1915 - Brooklyn Dodgers manager Wilbert Robinson tries to catch a baseball dropped from an airplane, but the pilot substituted a grapefruit.
- 1918 - First NHL Championship: Montreal Canadiens beat Toronto Arenas, outscoring them 10-7 in a two game set.
- 1922 - NHL Championship: Ottawa Senators outscore Toronto Saint Patricks, 5 to 4, in two games.
- 1925 - NHL Championship: Montreal Canadiens sweep Toronto Arenas in two games.
- 1929 - Bradman scores 123 Australia versus England at Melbourne Cricket Ground, his second Test Cricket ton.
- 1943 - Baseball approves official ball (with cork and balata).
- 1948 - 10th NCAA Men's Basketball Championship: Kentucky beats Baylor 58-42.
- 1949 - US Ladies Figure Skating Championship won by Yvonne C Sherman.
- 1949 - US Men's Figure Skating Championship won by Richard Button.
- 1954 - Atlanta Braves' Bobby Thomson breaks his ankle, he is replaced by Hank Aaron.
- 1955 - Patty Berg wins LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship.
- 1956 - New Zealand bowls out West Indies for 77 at Eden Park to score their first Test Cricket win.
- 1960 - Fay Crocker wins LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship.
- 1960 - NFL's Chicago Cardinals move to Saint Louis.
- 1960 - Chicago White Sox unveil new road uniforms with players' names above number.
- 1961 - Floyd Patterson knocks out Ingemar Johansson in six rounds to retain heavyweight boxing title.
- 1966 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Lagunita Golf Invitational.
- 1967 - Frank Worrell, West Indian cricketer, dies.
- 1974 - Glenn Turner scores twin tons for New Zealand's first win against Australia.
- 1977 - Dennis Lillee takes 6-26, England all out 95 in Centenary Test.
- 1978 - Ghulam Mustafa Guard, cricketer (3 wickets in two Tests for India), dies.
- 1979 - New York Islanders' Mike Bossy's 5th career hat trick.
- 1980 - Eric Heiden skates world record 1000 metre (1:13.60).
- 1981 - NCAA Saint Joseph's upsets top seed DePaul.
- 1982 - World Ice Dance Championship in Copenhagen won by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (Great Britain).
- 1982 - World Ice Pairs Figure Skating Championship in Copenhagen won by Sabine Baess and Tassilo Thierbach (German Democratic Republic).
- 1982 - World Ladies Figure Skate Championship in Copenhagen won by Elaine Zayak (USA).
- 1982 - World Men's Figure Skating Championship in Copenhagen won by Scott Hamilton (USA).
- 1983 - First USFL overtime game-Birmingham Stallions beat Oakland Invaders 20-14.
- 1983 - Louison Bobet, French cyclist (Tour de France 1953-55), dies at age 58.
- 1984 - Western Australia beats Queensland by four wickets to win the Sheffield Shield.
- 1984 - Dick Whitington, journalist/cricketer (South Australia and AIF bat), dies.
- 1984 - Last day of first-class cricket for G Chappell, R Marsh, B Laird.
- 1985 - Michael Secrest (US) begins 24 hour ride of 516 miles, 427 yards.
- 1987 - Washington Capitals score five goals against Toronto Blue Jays in 3 minutes and 3 seconds.
- 1994 - Donna Andrews wins LPGA Ping Welch's Golf Championship.
- 1995 - Leon Day, baseball pitcher (Negro Leagues), dies of heart failure at 78 (born 1916).
- 1996 - Sri Lanka beats India in World Cup semi-final as riots stop play.
- 1998 - Death of Risen Star, American racehorse (born 1985).
- 2007 - Death of Arnold Skaaland, American wrestler (born 1925).
- 607 - Twelfth recorded perihelion passage of Halley's Comet.
- 1759 - 27th recorded perihelion passage of Halley's Comet.
- 1781 - Sir William Herschel sees "comet" (really discovered Uranus).
- 1930 - Clyde Tombaugh announces discovery of Pluto at Lowell Observatory.
- 1969 - Apollo 9 returns to Earth.
- 1986 - Soyuz T-15 carries two cosmonauts to Soviet space station Mir.
- 1989 - 27th US space shuttle mission, STS-29, Discovery 8, launched; first woman to do the countdown.
- 1961 - Landslide in USSR kills 145.
- 1989 - A geomagnetic storm causes the collapse of the Hydro-Quebec power grid. Six million people are left without power for nine hours. Some areas in the northeastern U.S. and in Sweden also lose power, and auroras are seen as far south as Texas.
- 1992 - In eastern Turkey, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurs. At least 498 people killed, 2,000 injured, 2,200 houses heavily damaged.
- 1993 - The Great Blizzard of 1993 strikes the eastern U.S., bringing record snowfall and other severe weather all the way from Cuba to Québec; it is reported to have killed 184.
- 2009 - The Galeras volcano in southern Colombia erupts, blanketing the area with ash, forcing evacuation of 3000 people.
