Personal computer history:

  • 2003 - Sony announces the Sony Clié PEG-TG50 handheld computer, to be available for sale later this month in the US. It features built-in keyboard, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, voice recorder, Palm OS 5 operating system, 320x320 backlit color screen. Price is about US$400; weight is 6.2 ounces; size is 4.9 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2003 - Sony announces the Sony Clié PEG-SJ33 Limited Edition handheld computer. It is available in orange or blue case. Price is US$300.
  • 2003 - Sony announces the Sony Clié PEG-SJ22 handheld computer, similar to and replacing the SJ30. Price is US$200.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1938 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Short Subjects, Cartoons) to Disney for the film The Old Mill.
  • 1938 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Scientific or Technical, Class II) to Disney for the design and application of the multi-plane camera.
  • 1944 - The Goofy film How to Play Golf is released to theaters.
  • 1955 - U.S. President Eisenhower calls Walt Disney to tell him how good the film Man in Space was, and to ask for a copy of it to show the generals in the Pentagon.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Horse with the Flying Tail.
  • 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Wild Heart.
  • 1970 - The NBC TV network airs Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Diamonds on Wheels, part one.
  • 1978 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Return to Witch Mountain to theaters. The film is a sequel to the 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Roommates to theaters in the USA.
  • 2000 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Mission to Mars to theaters in the USA.
  • 2002 - The ABC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.
  • 2006 - Disney releases the live-action feature film The Shaggy Dog to theaters in the USA.
  • 2009 - The Walt Disney Company announces the creation of the D23 official Disney fan club.
  • 2009 - The Walt Disney Company releases the first issue of Disney Twenty-three magazine.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2005 - On Amelia Island, Florida, the 10th Annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is held, over four days. The Chevrolet Small Block Race Car Class is won by a 1960 Briggs-Cunningham Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Adolf Hitler orders a plan for the military occupation of Austria.
  • 1939 - Josef Stalin makes a speech to the Eighteenth Party Congress in Moscow. He says Russia would look after her own affairs, not fight anyone else's battles.
  • 1941 - (evening) The British four-engined Handley Page Halifax Mk II aircraft makes its operational debut. The first mission is against docks and shipping targets at Le Havre, France.
  • 1942 - (evening) 126 British bombers attack Essen. After three nights of bombing, the armament works of Krupps remains essentially undamaged. This is also the first bombing operation using the four-engined Avro Lancaster bomber.
  • 1944 - In the North Atlantic, while escorting convoy SC-154, Royal Canadian Navy ships HMCS St. Laurent and HMCS Swansea and a British Royal Navy destroyer surface and sink German submarine U-845.
  • 1945 - American forces land on Mindanao, Philippines.
  • 1945 - Field Marshal Albert Kesselring ceases to be Commander-in-Chief Armed Forces South (Mediterranean).

Video game history:

  • 1994 - 3DO announces that Goldstar and Samsung Electronics have been licenced to manufacture 3DO Interactive Multiplayer video game machines.
  • 1994 - Sega releases the Mega Jet video game system in Japan. The 16-bit system includes four titles, can accept plug-in cartridges, must hook to TV, uses 6-button controller.
  • 2000 - At the Game Developers' Conference in San Jose, California, Bill Gates announces plans for Microsoft's X-Box video game console. The system will feature a 600+ MHz custom Intel Pentium III processor, 8 GB hard drive, 64 MB RAM, DVD movie playback, special nVidia graphics processor, 64-channel 3D audio, and high-speed Internet connectivity.
  • 2003 - THQ releases the Red Faction II video game for the GameCube in the US. Price is US$49.99.
  • 2005 - At the Game Developers Conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata shows footage of a new Legend of Zelda video game for the GameCube, and gives some details of Nintendo's next-generation console, code-name Revolution. The system will use free wireless play, touchscreen controllers, and play GameCube games. The system will include a DVD player, and a virtual console to play all prior Nintendo console games. The core processor is supplied by IBM, code named Broadway; the graphics chipset is supplied by ATI, code named Hollywood. Iwata also demonstrates Nintendogs and ElectroPlankton for the Nintendo DS.
  • 2008 - Microsoft reduces the price of the Xbox in Europe by 80 euros, to 200 euros for the Arcade version, and 370 euros for the Elite version.
  • 2008 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2009 - In England, the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) video game awards ceremony is held.

  • 2009 - Sega releases the Madworld video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA
  • 2010 - Sony unveils the "Move" motion-controlled video game controller for the PlayStation 3. The system is used with the Eye gaming webcam.

Swedish history:

  • 2007 - At the Melodi festivalen '07 grand finale, winner is The Ark, with song "The Worrying Kind".

USA coin history:

  • 1870 - The Carson City Mint begins striking gold double eagles for circulation, striking 1332 pieces.

Sports history:

  • 1888 - Heavyweight Boxing champion John L Sullivan draws Charlie Mitchell in 30 rounds.
  • 1896 - After Bob Fitzsimmons knocks out much larger Jim Corbett to win world heavyweight championship he says, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall".
  • 1903 - Stanley Cup: Ottawa Silver Seven sweep Montréal AAA in two games.
  • 1909 - Jack Johnson fights Victor McLaglen to no decision in six for boxing title.
  • 1913 - Stanley Cup: Québec Bulldogs sweep Sydney Miners in two games.
  • 1913 - William Knox becomes first in American Bowling Congress to bowl 300.
  • 1920 - NHL's Québec Bulldogs' Jim Malone scores six goals versus Ottawa Senators.
  • 1934 - Longest undefeated streak in Toronto Maple Leafs history (18 games).
  • 1934 - US Ladies Figure Skating Championship won by Suzanne Davis.
  • 1934 - US Men's Figure Skating Championship won by Roger Turner.
  • 1941 - Larry MacPhail, Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager, predicts all players will wear batting helmets.
  • 1949 - Detroit Tigers' pitcher Art Houtteman is critically injured in an auto accident but recovers to win 15 games in 1949.
  • 1951 - FBI director J Edgar Hoover declines post of baseball commissioner.
  • 1957 - Thousands of soccer fans riot in Italy.
  • 1959 - Dorothy Comiskey Rigney sells 54 percent of Chicago White Sox to Bill Veeck.
  • 1962 - Due to its no black policy, Philadelphia Phillies leave Jack Tar Harrison Hotel and move to Rocky Point Motel, 20 miles outside Clearwater, Florida.
  • 1963 - Pete Rose debuts with hits in his two first at bats in spring training.
  • 1963 - Wilt Chamberlain of NBA San Francisco Warriors scores 70 points versus Syracuse.
  • 1966 - Five-time Horse of the Year, Kelso, retires.
  • 1970 - South Africa complete 4-0 series drubbing of Australia.
  • 1973 - BPAA US Open won by Mike McGrath.
  • 1974 - Carol Mann wins LPGA S&H Green Stamp Golf Classic.
  • 1974 - Lawrence Rowe completes 302 versus England Bridgetown, 36 fours 1 six.
  • 1982 - Salim Malik scores 100 in second inning of Test Cricket debut (v SL).
  • 1982 - Travis Jackson and Happy Chandler elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1983 - Walter Alston, Los Angeles Dodgers manager, elected to Hall of Fame.
  • 1985 - Bonnie Lauer wins Uniden LPGA Golf Invitational.
  • 1985 - Dallas Mavericks' coach Dick Motta is fourth NBA coach to win 700 games.
  • 1985 - India beats Pakistan to win "World Championship of Cricket".
  • 1985 - World Ice Dance Championship in Tokyo won by Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Bukin (USSR).
  • 1985 - World Ice Pairs Figure Skating Championship in Tokyo won by Elena Valova and Oleg Vasiliev (USSR).
  • 1985 - World Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Tokyo won by Katarina Witt (German Democratic Republic).
  • 1985 - World Men's Figure Skating Championship in Tokyo won by Alexandr Fadeev (USSR).
  • 1986 - Ernie Lombardi, National League Most Valuable Player in 1938, and Bobby Doerr, elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1988 - New York Islanders celebrate Mike Bossy night.
  • 1990 - World Ice Dance Championship in Halifax won by Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko (USSR).

  • 1992 - Sandra Seuser, Katrin Schreiter, Annet Hesselbarth, and Grit Breuer walk female indoor world record 4x400 metre (3:07.22).
  • 1995 - Citing the labor unrest as the reason, former Chicago Bulls' great Michael Jordan announces he is leaving baseball to return to the NBA.
  • 2006 - In the World Baseball Classic, Netherlands rout Panama, 10-0. The game is called after seven innings because of the mercy rule: a 10-run lead after seven innings.
  • 2022 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Los Angeles Kings by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Tampa Bay Lightning by score 4-1.
  • 2022 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats Anaheim Ducks by score 4-1.
