- 1983 - IBM announces the IBM Personal Computer XT in New York City. It features a Intel 8088 processor, 10 MB hard drive, eight expansion slots, serial port, 128 kB RAM, 40 kB ROM, keyboard, one double-sided 360 kB floppy drive. Price is US$4995. "XT" stands for eXtended Technology.
- 1991 - Sierra On-Line and Broderbund Software announce their intention to merge companies. New company name is to be Sierra-Broderbund.
- 2000 - Intel announces and begins shipping the 1 GHz Pentium III processor in limited quantities.
- 2000 - Apple Computer settles lawsuits out-of-court against Daewoo, Emachines, and others over computers that Apple claimed copied the look of Apple's iMac.
- 2002 - Sun Microsystems files a private antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in U.S. District Court in San Jose, California. The lawsuit seeks US$1 billion damages, a preliminary injunction requiring Microsoft to ship Java with Windows XP and Internet Explorer, the release of source code for Internet Explorer, and the release of interfaces between Windows and higher-level Microsoft source code.
- 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A personal computer appears, with monitor and keyboard attached to the system unit, but not a portable computer.
- 1928 - The Disney studio completes the 22nd Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Sky Scrappers, and ships it to Winkler Productions.
- 1946 - The Goofy film A Knight for a Day is released to theaters.
- 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring For the Love of Willadean, part one.
- 1967 - Buena Vista releases Disney's animated and live-action feature film The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin to theaters. The film is based on the novel By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman.
- 1970 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Menace on the Mountain, part two.
- 1975 - The NBC TV network airs NBC Nights at the Movies featuring Pollyanna.
- 1986 - The Alice's Tea Party attraction opens in Fantasyland at Tokyo Disneyland.
- 1987 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Bigfoot.
- 1990 - Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 80-millionth guest.
- 1995 - The CBS TV network debuts Disney's TV show The George Wendt Show.
- 2002 - Disney's Pop Century Resort opens at Walt Disney World.
- 2003 - The Le Music-Hall de Mickey show opens in Videopolis at Disneyland Paris.
- 1990 - In Geneva, Switzerland, the Geneva international auto show is held, over eleven days. Carrozzeria Bertone debuts its Nivola LT5. The car is based on a Corvette ZR-1, with the engine mounted behind the driver, and given distinctive Italian styling.
- 1941 - In London, England, Australian Prime Minister Menzies officially releases Britain from deserting naval protection of the Mediterranean to protect Australia, in the event of war in the Pacific, due to the large number of ground forces in the Middle East.
- 1941 - The Soviet government orders 900,000 reservists called to duty between May 15 and October 20.
- 1942 - British Bomber Command sends Boston bombers against Matford factories at Poissy, France.
- 1942 - (evening) British Bomber Command begins an intense three-night attack on Essen, Germany, using the "Gee" aircraft navigation equipment for the first time in active duty. On this first night, 211 bombers attack.
- 1942 - Rangoon, Burma, falls to Japanese forces.
- 1943 - British Bomber Command receives orders to modify Lancaster bombers to carry a special 10 ton mines to be used for breaking dams. The mine is code named "Upkeep", and has to be released from close to the water's surface, allowing it to drop down the face of the dam before exploding.
- 1944 - Adolf Hitler issues Führer Order 11, defining two classes of fortresses on the Eastern front. Fortified Areas are to hold down enemy forces, and counter-attack. Local String-points are to defend against enemy penetrations past Fortified Areas.
- 1945 - (0700 hours) Canadian forces begin an attack for Xanten, Germany.
- 1945 - (1110 hours) A German V-2 rocket hits Smithfield Market on Farringdon Road in the borough of Finsbury, near London, England, killing 110, seriously injuring 123, with 243 suffering lesser injuries.
- 1945 - 300 German Luftwaffe planes fail to destroy the Ludendorff railroad bridge across the Rhine River.
- 1945 - (evening) British bombers make a heavy attack on the Blohm and Voss submarine yards at Hamburg, Germany.
- 1946 - British agents in Germany capture Rudolf Hoess, former commandant of the Oswiecim concentration camp.
- 1992 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Japanese taking Rangoon, and landing on New Guinea.
- 1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 video game for the Genesis in the US.
- 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A department store has a "Video Games" section.
- 1994 - A & W Concentrate Company's image with the oval A & W logo, old stylized "Root Beer" under it, "FROSTY MUG TASTE" on a small banner, and a generic mug is registered as a trade-mark.
- 1975 - The branch mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba, begins producing Canada's circulation coins.
- 2006 - The Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post issue a coin and stamp set, featuring a Sable Island horse. The set includes one $5 0.9999 silver coin, one cancelled $5 stamp, and one mint $5 stamp. No more than 25,555 sets will be produced, with price $49.95.
- 1900 - National League decides to go with eight teams; they exclude Baltimore, Cleveland, Louisville and Washington (in 1953 Boston Braves move to Milwaukee).
- 1904 - Hugh Trumble takes a hat-trick in his final Test Cricket match.
- 1906 - Stanley Cup: Ottawa Silver 7 sweep Smiths Falls (Ontario) in two games.
- 1913 - Federal League organizes with six teams.
- 1930 - Babe Ruth signs two-year contract for $160,000 with New York Yankees general manager Ed Barrow, wrongly predicts "No one will ever be paid more than Ruth".
- 1941 - First baseball player drafted into WWII (Hugh Mulcahy, Philadelphia Phillies).
- 1943 - US Ladies Figure Skating Championship won by Gretchen Merrill.
- 1943 - US Men's Figure Skating Championship won by Arthur Vaughn.
- 1951 - International Table Tennis Federation bans Egypt (for refusing to play Israel).
- 1953 - Patty Berg wins LPGA Jacksonville Golf Open.
- 1954 - Herb McKinley sets 1/4 mile record of 6.8 seconds in Melbourne, Australia.
- 1958 - Silky Sullivan comes from 40 lengths back to win by three at Santa Anita.
- 1959 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Jacksonville Golf Open.
- 1966 - Casey Stengel elected to US baseball Hall of Fame.
- 1967 - New Orleans Saints begin selling season tickets (20,000 sold first day).
- 1968 - Six-year-old Tommy Moore scores hole-in-one in golf (Hagerstown, Maryland).
- 1971 - Joe Frazier beats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden (New York City, New York) in 15 rounds, retains heavyweight boxing title.
- 1971 - Milwaukee Bucks win their 20th straight NBA game (team record).
- 1980 - Greg Chappell 235 and Yallop 172, for 217 stand at Faisalabad.
- 1981 - Nancy Lopez wins LPGA Arizona Copper Golf Classic.
- 1986 - Martina Navratilova is first tennis player to earn US$10 million.
- 1987 - David Hookes (306) Wayne Phillips make 462 stand for South Australia.
- 1987 - Jane Geddes wins LPGA GNA/Glendale Federal Golf Classic.
- 1987 - Nelli Cooman becomes world champion 60 metre indoor.
- 1992 - Judy Dickinson wins LPGA Inamori Golf Classic.
- 2006 - In the first round of the World Baseball Classic, a Canadian team beats the highly-favored Team USA, 8-6.
- 1976 - 1,774kg (largest observed) stony meteorite falls in Jilin, China.
- 1979 - First extraterrestrial volcano discovered (Jupiter's satellite Io).
- 1979 - Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) transported 38 miles overland from Palmdale.
- 1986 - Japanese spacecraft Suisei flies by Halley's Comet, studying its ultraviolet hydrogen corona and solar wind.
- 1991 - Near the east coast of Koryakskiy Avtonomnyy Okrug, Russia, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurs. Believed to be the largest earthquake ever in this area.
- 2010 - In eastern Turkey, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake kills at least 51 villagers. Pver 40 aftershocks are recorded at up to 5.5 magnitude.
