Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - Borland International unveils the Delphi software development tool.
  • 1997 - US Robotics begins shipping new 56 kbps modems.
  • 1999 - At the Intel Developer's Forum in Palm Springs, California, Intel demonstrates a Pentium III processor operating at 1002 MHz, the fastest standard desktop processor speed to date.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A cowboy's house includes a personal computer encased in leather.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Disney ships the 49th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Three Bad Eggs, to Winkler Pictures.
  • 1939 - The animated film The Practical Pig is released to theaters.
  • 1950 - Disney releases the Goofy film How to Ride a Horse to theaters. The film was originally part of the film The Reluctant Dragon.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Chips Ahoy to theaters. Chip 'n Dale also appear.
  • 1960 - Buena Vista premieres Disney's live-action feature film Kidnapped in selected theaters. The film is based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Banner in the Sky: The Killer Mountain. It is the second part of the film Third Man on the Mountain.
  • 1964 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film The Sword in the Stone for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Scoring of Music - Adaptation or Treatment.
  • 1969 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1975 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film The Island at the Top of the World for an Oscar Award in the category Art Direction - Set Decoration.
  • 1975 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too for an Oscar Award in the category Short Films, Animated.
  • 1983 - Card Walker resigns as chief executive officer; Ron Miller is elected as new CEO of Walt Disney Productions. Ray Watson is named vice-chairman, to become full chairman on May 1 when Card Walker retires the position.
  • 1985 - The Disney Clothiers shop opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1996 - The Spirit of Pocahontas show gives its last performance at the Disney-MGM Studios.
  • 1997 - Michael Eisner and Steve Jobs announce that the Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios have agreed to jointly produce five movies over the next ten years. Costs, profits, and logo credit will be split 50/50. Disney will purchase one million shares of Pixar common stock at US$15 per share, and may acquire up to 5 percent of the company.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - The Greek government agrees to allow the British Army to enter the country for defense against Germany.
  • 1941 - British War Cabinet decides to carry out plan to help defend Greece.
  • 1941 - (evening) The British twin-engined Avro Manchester bomber makes its debut in active service. First mission is against warships at Brest.
  • 1942 - In Canada, an order-in-council, under the War Measures Act, authorizes the relocation of Japanese Canadians to internment camps.
  • 1942 - Bombers and fighters from US carrier Enterprise make their first attack on Wake Island. No planes are lost.
  • 1942 - Russian forces encircle the entire II Corps of German 16th Army near Staraya Russa.
  • 1944 - Over the day, the US 8th Air Force launches bomber attacks on Gotha, Rostock, and Schweinfurt.
  • 1944 - In the North Atlantic, Royal Canadian Navy frigate Waskesiu sinks German submarine U-257.
  • 1944 - (evening) 734 British bombers attack Schweinfurt, Germany.
  • 1950 - A British court sentences German former army commander Erich von Manstein to 18 years imprisonment.
  • 1983 - A US Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians releases a 467-page report, saying relocation and internment of 120,000 Japanese-American citizens was a "grave injustice". The report criticizes Congress, the Supreme Court, the press, and wartime president Roosevelt.

Video game history:

  • 2008 - Electronic Arts makes a hostile bid of US$2 billion for Take-Two.

Swedish history:

  • 1389 - A decisive battle is fought at Åsle (Falan), east of Falköping, in Västergötland, between the forces of King Albrekt and Queen Margareta. General Henrik Parow, leader of the Queen's forces, is killed, but Albrekt's forces are defeated. The King and his son Erik are taken captive, ending Mecklenburg rule in Sweden.
  • 1543 - Peder Pedersen leads a Danish army of about 1500 soldiers and legionaries into Småland.
  • 1645 - At Jankov, south-east of Prague, Lennart Torstenson's army of 15,000 nd 60 field guns defeats the Imperial army of 15,000 and 26 field guns. The Imperial army loses half its men.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1992 - The Finance Minister announces that the government is beginning a review of the Royal Canadian Mint to determine if it should be privatized.
  • 2006 - The Canadian Coinoisseur conducts coin auctions in conjunction with the TOREX coin show in Toronto, Ontario. Some highlights (including fees):
    • 50 cents 1921 ICCS VG-8: $29,990;
    • $1 1947 ML PCGS MS-66: $14,400.

  • 2007 - In Toronto, Ontario, the Torex coin show is held. Moore Numismatic Auctions conducts the auction. A 1921 50-cent coin grading ICCS VG-8 sells for $28,750.

Sports history:

  • 1896 - Victoria all out for 43 versus South Australia, Jones 6-15 Jarvis 4-27.
  • 1917 - Boston Red Sox sell Smokey Joe Wood, his arm dead at age 26, to Cleveland for $15,000.
  • 1924 - Johnny Weissmuller, swims 100 metre record (57:2/5 seconds).
  • 1932 - Malcolm Campbell drives record speed (253.96 mph) at Daytona.
  • 1951 - Ice Pairs Championship at Milan won by Ria Baran and Paul Falk of Germany.
  • 1951 - Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Milan won by Jeanette Altwegg of Great Britain.
  • 1951 - Men's Figure Skating Championship in Milan won by Richard Button (USA).
  • 1952 - Betty MacKinnon and Sam Snead win LPGA Orlando Mixed Golf Tournament.
  • 1960 - US beats Germany in Olympics hockey finals round, 9-1.
  • 1970 - Heintje Simons (14) wins 7 gold records.
  • 1974 - Atje Keulen-Deelstra becomes world champion all-round skater.
  • 1978 - Kevin Porter, New Jersey Nets, sets NBA record with 29 assists in a game.
  • 1980 - Joanne Carner wins LPGA Bent Tree Golf Classic.
  • 1980 - New York Rangers score five power-play goals against New York Islanders.
  • 1980 - USA Olympic hockey team beats Finland (4-2) and wins gold medal.
  • 1982 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers scores his 77th goal of the National Hockey League season, breaking the previous record of 76.
  • 1985 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA Circle K Golf Open Tucson.
  • 1985 - Jim Kelly (Houston USFL) passes for pro football record 574 yards.
  • 1987 - Los Angeles Lakers' Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scores his 36,000th NBA point.
  • 1988 - Matti Nykanen becomes winter Olympics first triple gold medalist.
  • 1989 - Harold E Ballard sells Canadian Football League team Hamilton Tiger-Cats to David Braley.
  • 1990 - Beth Daniel wins LPGA Orix Hawaiian Ladies Golf Open.
  • 1991 - End of World League of American Football's (WLAF) first draft.
  • 1994 - Scoreboard is unveiled at new Cleveland Indians' park (Jacobs Field).
  • 1996 - Meg Mallon wins LPGA Cup o' Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Golf Open.
  • 1998 - NHL resumes season since February 8th to accommodate the Olympics.

Space exploration history:

  • 1949 - V-2/WAC-Corporal first rocket to outer space, White Sands, New Mexico, 400km.
  • 1961 - Explorer 10 fails to reach Earth orbit.
  • 1968 - First pulsar discovered (CP 1919 by Jocelyn Burnell at Cambridge).
  • 1986 - Voyager 2, first Uranus fly-by.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1892 - In Imperial Valley, California, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurs. At the old Carrizo station in San Diego County, all adobe buildings were destroyed.
  • 1970 - 29 Swiss Army officers die in avalanche (Reckingen, Switzerland).
  • 1981 - In Greece, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurs. Sixteen people killed, more than 400 injured, and considerable damage in the Athens-Corinth area.
  • 2004 - A 6.5 Richter scale earthquake in Northern Morocco hits in the Rif mountains near the city of Al Hoceima, killing 400. Ait Kamara is destroyed; 517 are killed.

Other history:

  • 1821 - Mexico gains independence from Spain.
  • 2008 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences holds its 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. Best Movie: No Country For Old Men, Best Director: No Country For Old Men.
