Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Seventeen American and Japanese companies form a group to support a 3-inch floppy disk and drive, with a capacity of 500,000 bytes.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A laptop computer is shown, with a wireless Internet connection.
  • 1999 - Hitachi announces the HPW-600ET tablet-style handheld computer. It features Windows CE, 7.5-inch color display, Hitachi 128 MHz SH-4 processor, modem. Weight is under 30 ounces; price is US$1199.
  • 1999 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 400 MHz K6-III processor. It features 3DNow! graphics instructions, Direct X 6.0 support, 64 kB Level 1 cache, 256 kB on-chip Level 2 cache. The processor incorporates 21.3 million transistors in a 0.25-micron process. Code-name during development was Sharptooth.
  • 2000 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 550 MHz K6-2 processor. Price is US$189 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2000 - Via unveils the Cyrix III processor, with speeds of 400 and 433 MHz, and system bus speeds of 100, 124, and 133 MHz. Prices are US$89 and US$99. Via expects to begin shipping the processor in April. Code-name during development was Joshua.
  • 2000 - Palm Computer introduces the Palm IIIc handheld computer. It features Palm OS 3.5, 8 MB RAM, 20 MHz Motorola Dragonball EZ processor, 256-color active-matrix TFT 160x160 pixel 2.5x2.5-inch screen, docking station. The rechargeable lithium ion battery gives power for about two weeks. Price is US$449; weight is 7.6 ounces.
  • 2000 - Palm Computer introduces the Palm IIIxe handheld computer, like the Palm IIIx but with 8 MB RAM, for US$249.
  • 2001 - Poland issues a postage stamp depicting a computer mouse.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1924 - Disney ships the third Alice Comedy film, Alice's Spooky Adventure, to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1960 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Sleeping Beauty for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture.
  • 1960 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Noah's Ark for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1960 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Mysteries of the Deep for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Live-Action Subjects.
  • 1960 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Donald in Mathmagic Land for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1964 - The Below Decks Museum attraction opens on the Sailing Ship Columbia attraction in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1972 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks for an Oscar Award in the category Art Direction - Set Decoration.
  • 1972 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Scoring: Adaptation and Original Song Score.
  • 1972 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the song "The Age of Not Believing" from the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Song.
  • 1972 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks for an Oscar Award in the category Costume Design.
  • 1972 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks for an Oscar Award in the category Special Visual Effects.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Scenes from a Mall to theatres.
  • 1992 - The NBC TV network airs the last Walter and Emily show.
  • 1996 - Disney launches the Disney.com web site on the Internet. Primary purpose of the site is to provide travel info on Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and to promote Disney merchandise.
  • 2007 - Disney Cruise Line announces two new cruise ships will be built, scheduled to enter service in 2011 and 2012. The new 122,000 gross ton ships will be two decks taller than the existing Disney ships, and will offer 1250 staterooms each. The ships are to be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.
  • 2009 - The 81st Annual Academy Awards show is held. Director Andrew Stanton wins Best Animated Feature Film award for WALL-E.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Australian Prime Minister Menzies writes to High Commissioner Stanley Bruce in London, England, suggesting it is vital that a German defeat include "soft" peace terms, foreseeing a possible new alignment of nations including Britain, France, Germany, and Italy against Russia.
  • 1941 - German battle cruiser Gneisenau sinks Canadian merchant ship A.D. Huff east of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Two die, and 37 are taken prisoner.
  • 1942 - Submarine U-129 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship George L. Torian off British Guyana in the Caribbean.
  • 1942 - In England, Air Marshal Arthur Travers Harris becomes the new Commander-in-Chief, Bomber Command.
  • 1942 - American British Dutch Australian command is dissolved.
  • 1942 - Japanese paratroops take Penfui airfield, on Timor.
  • 1943 - (afternoon) Near Tunisia, German forces withdraw through Kasserine.
  • 1943 - Near Gibraltar, Royal Canadian Navy corvette Weyburn strikes a mine and sinks.
  • 1945 - In the English Channel, off Falmouth, German submarine U-1004 torpedoes and sinks Canadian corvette HMCS Trentonian, with the loss of six lives.
  • 1946 - In Paris, France, Jean Luchaire is executed by a firing squad. He was convicted January 23 of treason as Delegate for Information and Propaganda in the Vichy government.
  • 1946 - In Yokohama, US 8th Army war crimes commission sentences Captain Shigeru Aono to ten years prison hard labor for maltreating Allied prisoners.
  • 1946 - Spanish Government executes ten former Spanish comrades of French resistance fighters, including Cristino Garcia and Manuel Castro Rodriguez.
  • 1962 - The USSR issues two postage stamps depicting heroes of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 2002 - In Japan, Microsoft releases the Xbox game system. Price is 34,800 yen (about US$263). A special edition with distinct color, adapter for HDTV video and Dolby 5.1 audio, and key chain signed by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is priced at 38,800 yen. Bill Gates hands the first Xbox sold to Atsushi Ishizaka.
  • 2002 - Microsoft releases a Special-Edition Xbox video game system in Japan. The system features smoke-black translucent case, High Definition A/V Pack, and a keychain embossed with Bill Gates signature. Price is 39,800 yen (about US$300).
  • 2002 - Microsoft releases the Nezumix video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Microsoft releases the Project Gotham: World Street Racer video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Microsoft releases the Tenku: Freestyle Snowboarding video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Konami releases the Air Force Delta II video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Konami releases the ESPN Winter X-Games Showboarding 2002 video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Konami releases the Hyper Sports 2002 Winter video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Konami releases the Silent Hill 2: Saigo no Uta video game for the Xbox in Japan.
  • 2002 - Tecmo releases the Dead or Alive 3 video game for the Xbox in Japan.

  • 2011 - Atlus releases the Radiant Historia video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2011 - Atari releases the Driver: San Francisco video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2011 - Electronic Arts releases the Bulletstorm video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Killzone 3 video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2012 - Sony releases the PlayStation Vita handheld video game system in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1717 - At Arnhem, Netherlands, Baron Freiherr von Görtz, chief member of the Swedish Purchasing Deputation, is arrested and imprisoned, by request of King George I of England.
  • 1946 - King Gustaf removes Prince Carl Johan from succession to the throne and from Swedish royal family for marrying a commoner.

USA coin history:

  • 1793 - (estimated day) First trial strikes of copper cents are made.
  • 1922 - US Congress authorizes Grant Memorial $1 gold coin.
  • 1979 - Last ever meeting of annual Assay Commission at US Mint in Philadelphia.

  • 1882 - With 120 miles James Saunders wins New York City's 24-hour race and $100 prize.

  • 1958 - Australian swimmer Jon Konrads sets six world records in two days.
  • 1959 - First Daytona 500 auto race; Lee Petty wins (135.521 MPH).
  • 1962 - Wilt Chamberlain sets NBA record with 34 free throw attempts.
  • 1967 - Sling-shot goal post and 6-feet wide border around field are standard in NFL.
  • 1969 - First female US thoroughbred pari-mutuel jockey win (Barbara Jo Rubin).
  • 1976 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Bent Tree Golf Classic.
  • 1979 - Billy Martin named manager of Oakland Athletics.
  • 1980 - The United States Olympic Hockey Team defeats the Soviet Union 4-3 in the semifinals of the XIII Olympic Winter Games. The Soviet team had been undefeated in Olympic hockey since 1968.
  • 1981 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA Bent Tree Ladies Golf Classic.
  • 1983 - Vladimir Salnikov (USSR) sets 1500 metre freestyle swimming record.
  • 1984 - Brothers Anton and Peter Stastny score 8 points each for NHL Québec Nordiques.
  • 1987 - Bruno Marie-Rose runs world record 200 metre indoor (20.36 seconds).
  • 1988 - Bonnie Blair skates world record 500 metre (39.10 seconds).
  • 1990 - First day India versus New Zealand cricket at Auckland New Zealand 5-78 at lunch, 9-387 stumps.
  • 1991 - Test Cricket debut of Sanath Jayasuriya, versus New Zealand at Hamilton.
  • 1992 - Lisa Walters wins LPGA Itoki Hawaiian Ladies Open Golf Tournament.
  • 1993 - Vinod Kambli scores 224 versus England at Bombay, 411 balls, 23 fours.
  • 1997 - Annika Sorenstam wins LPGA Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open.
  • 1998 - XVIII Olympic Winter Games close at Nagano, Japan.
