Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - In San Francisco, California, the International Solid State Circuits Conference is held, over three days.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • An issue of "WIRED" magazine shows a desktop computer on the cover.
    • A personal computer is used to access the Internet over 28.8kbps modem.
    • Bill Gates appears, offering to buy out a competing Internet company. Instead of actually buying the company, two of his goons trash the office.

  • 2000 - At the Intel Developer's Forum, Intel demonstrates an upcoming 32-bit processor, code-named Willamette, running at 1.5 GHz.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A fairy refers to the "WANDOS 2.0" operating system, a reference to the Windows operating system.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - M.J. Winkler Productions releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Mysterious Mystery to theaters.
  • 1930 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film Autumn.
  • 1936 - The Mickey Mouse film Orphan's Picnic is released to theaters. Donald Duck also appears.
  • 1948 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Song of the South for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture.
  • 1948 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the song "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" from the film Song of the South for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Song.
  • 1948 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Chip an' Dale for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1948 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Pluto's Blue Note for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1950 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's animated feature film Cinderella to theaters. The film cost US$2.2 million to make.
  • 1954 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Rugged Bear for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.

  • 1988 - Maldives issues nine postage stamps depicting Disney characters and space exploration.
  • 1989 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Beaches for an Oscar Award in the category Art Direction - Set Decoration.

  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A Chinese restaurant is called "Mickey Mao's", a reference to Mickey Mouse.
  • 2005 - Hong Kong Disneyland begins taking reservations. The park cost US$1.8 billion.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Germany announces that all British merchant ships will be treated as warships.
  • 1942 - On Singapore, 130,000 British, Indian, and Australian men surrender to 35,000 Japanese forces, the greatest mass capitulation in British history. Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita accepts surrender of Singapore from British Lieutenant General A.E. Percival.
  • 1943 - The British government protests to the Swedish government regarding Sweden building fishing boats for the Germans to use as minesweepers.
  • 1944 - (about 0945 hours) In Italy, about 230 Allied B-17 bombers based at Foggia drop 257 tons of 500 pound bombs and 59 tons of incendiaries on the monastery atop Monte Cassino.
  • 1944 - (morning) The Japanese commander at Truk, Vice Admiral Siezo Kobayashi, concludes there is no imminent danger to the island, so he grounds reconnaissance planes, defuels planes, removes bombs and torpedoes, sends pilots to quarters on another island.
  • 1944 - (evening) 891 British bombers attack Berlin, Germany. They drop 2645 tons of bombs, inflicting enormous damage. About 43 planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - (morning) In Dresden, Germany, the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) collapses from the extreme heat of the previous night's firestorm bombing.
  • 1945 - 210 American B-17 bombers attack the marshalling yards at Dresden.
  • 1945 - About 300 American B-17 bombers attack Kottbus, 20 miles from Dresden.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Java Sea.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Magnavox settles its television game patent infringement suit against Mattel Electronics and five other companies. Mattel will pay a settlement fee, and be licensed to continue producing and selling its systems.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. On a desert island, one character tells another to "draw up plans for a coconut radio and if possible a coconut Nintendo system".
  • 2008 - At the Tokyo arcade expo in Chiba, Japan, Capcom shows the Street Fighter IV arcade game.
  • 2011 - Capcom releases the Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - LucasArts releases the LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars video game for the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1763 - At the Château de Hubertsburg, the Treaty of Hubertsburg is signed between the King of Prussia and the Empress and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. Allies, including Sweden, sign on to the treaty in March.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2007 - The Desjardins Group of Quebec issues a twelve-page report entitled "Should we stop using the penny?". The report includes a survey of Canadian attitudes toward small coinage. 37 percent say they use the 1-cent piece for purchases; 50 percent use the 5-cent and 10-cent coins. The report recommends the government stop issuance of 1-cent coins, and remove them from circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1814 - President James Madison appoints Adam Eckfelt as chief coiner.
  • 1906 - The Denver Mint strikes its first coin, the quarter dollar.
  • 1937 - Philadelphia coin dealer Israel Switt sells a 1933 gold $20 coin to dealer James Macallister.
  • 2007 - The US Mint releases the first coin of the Presidential $1 Coin Program to circulation, the George Washington dollar.

Sports history:

  • 1916 - New York Yankees buy Frank Baker AKA Home Run Baker from the Philadelphia Athletics for US$37,500.
  • 1921 - Arthur Mailey completes 9-121 versus England, Australian Test Cricket record.
  • 1930 - Weona beats Toluca in Illinois Basketball Tournament in ten overtimes.
  • 1931 - Spring training site of New York Yankees in Saint Petersburg is renamed Miller Huggins Field in honor of the team's late manager.
  • 1932 - III Olympic Winter Games close at Lake Placid, New York.
  • 1932 - Australia beats South Africa in cricket by an inning in 5 hours 53 minutes playing time.
  • 1932 - US bobsled team member Eddie Eagan becomes only athlete to win gold in both Summer and Winter Olympics (1920 boxing gold).
  • 1936 - Sonja Henie, Norway, wins third consecutive Olympics figure skating gold.
  • 1956 - Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Athletics cancel an exhibition game in Birmingham, Alabama, because of local ordinance barring blacks from playing against whites.
  • 1958 - Ice Dance Championship at Paris won by June Markham/Courtney Jones of Great Britain.
  • 1958 - Ice Pairs Championship at Paris won by Barbara Wagner/Rob Paul of Canada.
  • 1958 - Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Paris won by Carol Heiss of USA.
  • 1958 - Men's Figure Skating Championship in Paris won by David Jenkins of USA.
  • 1959 - Louise Suggs wins LPGA Saint Petersburg Golf Tournament.
  • 1961 - Australia beats West Indies 2-1 in one of best Test Cricket series ever.
  • 1961 - Entire US figure skating team of 18 dies in Belgian Sabena 707 crash.
  • 1963 - First US female world figure skating champion (Tenley Albright).
  • 1964 - Bill Bradley scores 51 points for Princeton.
  • 1966 - Kees Verkerk becomes world champion all-round skater.
  • 1968 - Anaheim Amigos' Les Salvage scores ten three-point baskets in ABA game versus Denver Nuggets.
  • 1970 - Ard Schenk becomes world champion all-round skater.
  • 1970 - Carol Mann wins LPGA Burdine's Golf Invitational.
  • 1972 - Bill Torrey becomes first New York Islanders' General Manager.
  • 1973 - Friendsville Academy (Tennessee) ends 138-game basketball losing streak.
  • 1976 - XII Olympic Winter Games close at Innsbruck, Austria.
  • 1976 - Joanne Carner wins LPGA Orange Blossom Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - England all out 64 for first loss to New Zealand in cricket player (Boycott Captain).
  • 1978 - Leon Spinks beats Muhammad Ali in 15 rounds for world heavyweight crown.

  • 1987 - Craig Stadler disqualified from Andy Williams Open for kneeling on a towel to make a shot.
  • 1987 - Karlstad skates world record 10km (14:03.92).
  • 1987 - Nikolai Guljajev becomes world champion skater.
  • 1990 - A lockout begins as Major League Baseball owners refuse to open spring training camp without reaching a new Basic Agreement with the players.
  • 1991 - Troy State sets NCAA Division II record with 103 points in second half routing DeVry Institute 187-117.
  • 1995 - Dublin - Republic of Ireland versus England football match in Lansdowne Road abandoned due to violence and rioting.
  • 1997 - US female Figure Skating championship won by Tara Lipinski.
  • 1997 - US male Figure Skating championship won by Todd Eldridge.
  • 1998 - Dale Eggeling wins Los Angeles Women's Golf Championship.
  • 1998 - In Dayton Beach, Florida, Dale Earnhardt wins the Daytona 500 in his 20th try, after many unsuccessful attempts.
  • 2006 - Jeff Weaver agrees to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim worth $8,325,000.
  • 2007 - Baseball commissioner office approves a one-year contract worth $15.8 million for Barry Bonds with the New York Giants.
  • 2009 - In the NBA's annual All-Star Game, West beats East 146-119.
  • 2009 - In Norway, round 2 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Sébastien Loeb.
  • 2022 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oiler beats Los Angeles Kings by score 5-2.
  • 2022 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Colorado Avalanche by score 4-1.

  • 1992 - Jeffrey Dahmer found by court to be sane and guilty of killing 15 boys.
  • 1992 - The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation opens the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, with financing from Malaysian billionaire Lim Goh Tong.
  • 1994 - US asks Aristide to adopt a peace plan from Haiti.
  • 1995 - Kevin Mitnick is arrested by the FBI and charged with breaking into some of the United States' most "secure" computers systems.
  • 2007 - In Ohio, USA, a meteor streaks across the sky, creating a sonic boom.
  • 2008 - In New York, Wal-Mart Stores announces it will exclusively sell high-definition DVDs in the Blu-Ray format. Sales of HD DVD systems and drives will be phased out until June.
  • 2008 - Cook County Circuit Court in Chicago, Illinois, declares missing millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett legally dead, five months after the airplane he was flying disappeared over Nevada.
  • 2010 - Norwegian fertilizer-maker Yara agrees to buy American firm Terra for US$4.1 billion, extending Yara's lead as world's biggest maker of nitrogen-based fertilizer.
