Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Texas Instruments cuts the dealer price on the TI 99/4A, dropping the retail price to under US$150.
  • 1999 - Free-PC announces it will give away a free Compaq computer to 10,000 applicants willing to sacrifice a part of the screen's viewing area to advertising.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney signs a contract with Winkler Pictures, allowing the Alice Comedy series to be released by Film Booking Offices, starting in September.
  • 1932 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Grocery Boy. Pluto and Minnie Mouse also appear.
  • 1936 - In England, Odhams Press first publishes Mickey Mouse Weekly. 375,000 copies of the first issue are sold.
  • 1943 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Bambi for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.
  • 1943 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the song "Love is a Song" from the film Bambi for an Oscar Award in the category Music, Best Song.
  • 1943 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Der Fuehrer's Face for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1943 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film The Grain that Built a Hemisphere for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Documentary.
  • 1943 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film The New Spirit for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Documentary.
  • 1952 - Disney releases the animated film Lambert, the Sheepish Lion to theaters.
  • 1953 - Walt Disney appears as a guest on the TV show Toast of the Town.
  • 1956 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Survival in Nature.
  • 1967 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Monkeys, Go Home! to theaters. The film is based on the book The Monkeys by G.K. Wilkinson.
  • 1968 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Blackbeard's Ghost to theaters.
  • 1970 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Smoke, part two.
  • 1980 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Midnight Madness to theaters.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled A Valentine from Disney.
  • 1987 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled The Liberators.
  • 1990 - At a movie industry convention in Las Vegas, Disney announces that beginning in March its theater film licensing agreements will not allow commercials to be shown with its releases.
  • 1997 - Disney previews the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film That Darn Cat at FAO Schwarz in New York City.
  • 2001 - In Anaheim, California, Disney's California Adventure theme park opens, next to Disneyland. The 55-acre site includes three areas: Paradise Pier, Hollywood Pictures Backlot, and the Golden State. The theme park cost US$1.4 billion to build. Admission prices are US$43 for adults, and US$33 for children.
  • 2001 - The Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill restaurant opens at Pacific Wharf in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Corn Dog Castle restaurant opens in Paradise Pier in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Bur-r-r Bank Ice Cream shop opens in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Boudin Bakery attraction opens in Pacific Wharf in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Baker's Field Bakery opens in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Award Weiners restaurant opens in Hollywood Land in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The Avalon Cove restaurant opens at Paradise Pier in Disney's California Adventure. Operated by Wolfgang Puck.
  • 2001 - The California Screamin' roller coaster opens in the Paradise Pier area of Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2001 - The ABC Soap Opera Bistro restaurant opens in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2002 - At the first anniversary of the opening of Disney's California Adventure theme park, Disneyland Resort president Cynthia Harriss and Walt Disney Imagineering senior vice president Barry Braverman announce plans for the park's expansion.
  • 2003 - The Jungle Book Carnival begins at Disneyland Paris, running for a month.
  • 2007 - The name of Buena Vista Games is changed to Disney Interactive Studios.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2006 - MotorWeek magazine awards the Corvette Z06 its Drivers' Choice Award at the Chicago Auto Show.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Bulgaria signs an agreement with Germany for military co-operation. In particular, the German 12th Army is allowed to concentrate along the frontier with Greece.
  • 1942 - Philippine President Manuel Quezon proposes the USA immediately grant Philippines independence, the islands be neutralized, Philippine armydisband, and US and Japanese forces withdraw. US President Franklin Roosevelt refuses.
  • 1942 - (evening) Japanese assault troops cross from Johore and land on Singapore, attacking along an eight-mile stretch.
  • 1943 - In the Mediterranean, Royal Canadian Navy corvette Regina sinks Italian submarine Avorio.
  • 1944 - (evening) Twelve British Lancaster bombers attack Limoges, France. They destroy most of the Gnome et Rhône airplane-engine factory. All planes return to England safely. A 12,000-pound bomb is dropped for the first time.
  • 1945 - (0500 hours) 1334 guns of the British and Canadian armies facing German defenders open fire in advance of Operation Veritable. Over 24 hours, over 500,000 rounds are fired.
  • 1945 - (1030 hours) In Europe, the 1st Canadian Army, plus additional Allied formations, launches Operation Veritable, to clear the Reichswald Forest, break the Siegfried Line, clear the Hochwald Forest defences, and close up the Rhine river.
  • 1945 - (evening) 487 British bombers attack oil targets at Pölitz, Germany.
  • 1946 - At the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Soviet Union prosecutors begin presenting their case. Soviet Lieutenant General Roman Rudenko lists a summary of German property damages against the Soviet Union: complete or partial destruction of 2508 church buildings, 1710 towns, 70,000 villages/hamlets, 31,850 industrial establishments, 40,000 miles of railroad, 4100 railroad stations, 40,000 hospitals, 84,000 schools, and 43,000 public libraries. 7 million horses, and 17 million sheep and goats were slaughtered or driven off. Total damage is estimated at 679 billion rubles.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Walter Day releases the first Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard to the public, recording video game high scores.
  • 1982 - Council of Bradley, Illinois, bars children under 16 from playing video arcade games.
  • 1998 - The Official Video Game and Pinball Book of World Records is published. 984 pages, including records since 1981.
  • 1999 - Nintendo releases the Mario Party video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2000 - CBS Television airs the Judging Amy TV show in the USA. A Nintendo 64 is being played without a cartridge plugged in.

Swedish history:

  • 1984 - (to February 19) The 14th Olympic Winter Games are held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Sweden wins 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
  • 1992 - (to February 23) The 16th Olympic Winter Games are held in Albertville, France. Sweden wins 1 gold and 3 bronze medals.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1968 - Bill S23, "An Act to amend the Currency, Mint and Exchange Fund Act and the Criminal Code" passes. The Act removes silver from the specifications of coins for circulation, prohibits melting of any Canadian coin, allows the Royal Canadian Mint to operate facilities outside of Ottawa, and allows the Royal Canadian Mint to make coins for other countries.

USA coin history:

  • 1980 - The General Services Administration begins accepting orders for about 923,000 Carson City-minted silver dollars, one to 500 coins per request, $65 for 1883-CC, $60 for 1884-CC, and $45 for a mixed date (1878-85, 1889-93).
  • 1996 - US Secret Service seizes the Farouk-Fenton specimen of the 1933 gold double eagle from British coin dealer Stephen Fenton and and American dealer Jay Parrino in a sting operation in New York City.
  • 2007 - The George Washington Presidential dollar coin is released early in Nebraska.

Sports history:

  • 1896 - Western Conference forms of Midwestern University, later renamed Big 10 Conference.
  • 1916 - American baseball's National League votes down Charlie Ebbets proposal to limit 25-cent seats.
  • 1935 - First NFL draft; Jay Berwanger of University of Chicago is first pick (by Philadelphia Eagles); he never plays in the NFL.
  • 1936 - First ski jumping tournament, Red Wing, Minnesota, USA.
  • 1936 - First successful Toronto Maple Leafs penalty shot, Conacher versus New York Rangers.
  • 1947 - Jan van der Hoorn wins 8th Dutch 11-cities skating race (10:51).
  • 1948 - V Olympic Winter Games close at Saint Moritz, Switzerland.
  • 1953 - Betty Jameson wins LPGA Serbin Golf Open.
  • 1960 - Boston Celtics' Bill Russell becomes first NBA player with 50 rebounds (51).
  • 1963 - AFL's Dallas Texans become Kansas City Chiefs.
  • 1967 - Longest losing streak in Toronto Maple Leaf history (ten games).
  • 1972 - Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard selected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1973 - Mushtaq and Asif Iqbal make 350 stand for fourth wicket versus New Zealand.
  • 1975 - The Washington Capitals get only one shot in a period against the New York Islanders.
  • 1976 - Jan Stephens wins LPGA Sarah Coventry Naples Golf Classic.
  • 1976 - Largest crowd at Cleveland Coliseum (Cleveland Cavaliers vs Washington Bullets - 21,130).
  • 1981 - Sally Little wins LPGA Elizabeth Arden Golf Classic.
  • 1981 - US female Figure Skating championship won by Elaine Zayak.
  • 1981 - US male Figure Skating championship won by Scott Hamilton.
  • 1982 - The longest-playing infield foursome is broken up as the Los Angeles Dodgers trade Davey Lopes to the Oakland Athletics for minor leaguer Lance Hudson. The second baseman had played with Steve Garvey, Ron Cey and Bill Russell since 1974.
  • 1983 - Champion thoroughbred Shergar kidnapped in Ireland; never found; Lloyds of London pays US$10.6 million insurance.
  • 1983 - Wayne Gretzky sets NHL all star record of four goals in one period.
  • 1983 - 35th NHL All-Star Game: Campbell beats Wales 9-3 at New York Islanders.
  • 1983 - Baseball orders Mickey Mantle to sever ties with Claridge Casino.
  • 1984 - Oakland Athletics take New York Yankees' pitcher Tim Belcher as Type A free agent compensation.
  • 1984 - (to February 19) The XIV Olympic Winter Games are held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
  • 1985 - First-class cricket debut of Jimmy Adams (age 17), Jamaica versus Barbados.
  • 1985 - Bruce Morris, Marshall University, makes a 92-foot 5.25-inch basketball shot.
  • 1985 - Michael Gross swims world record 800 metre freestyle (7:38.75).
  • 1986 - Spud Webb (5 feet 7 inches tall) of Atlanta Hawks wins NBA Slam Dunk Competition.
  • 1986 - US male Figure Skating championship won by Brian Boitano.
  • 1987 - 37th NBA All-Star Game: West beats East 154-149 (overtime) at Seattle, Washington.
  • 1987 - Nancy Lopez wins LPGA Sarasota Golf Classic.
  • 1991 - Roger Clemens signs record $5,380,250 per year Boston Red Sox contract.
  • 1992 - (to February 23) XVI Olympic Winter Games are held in Albertville, France.
  • 1994 - Kapil Dev sets world record for Test Cricket wickets with 432.
  • 1996 - NFL and Cleveland allows Art Modell to move his NFL franchise to Baltimore but he has to leave the Browns' name behind.
  • 1998 - First female ice hockey game in Olympics history: Finland beats Sweden 6-0.
  • 1998 - 48th NBA All-Star Game East beats West 135-114 at New York City.
  • 1998 - NHL stops season until February 24th to accommodate the Olympics.
  • 2006 - Wayne Krivsky is selected as the Cincinnati Reds' general manager, replacing Dan O'Brien.
  • 2009 - First baseman Ryan Howard and the Philadelphia Phillies agree to a three-year, US$54 million contract.
  • 2022 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Vancouver Canucks beats Arizona Coyotes by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Edmonton Oilers by score 4-0.
  • 2022 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Minnesota Wild by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Washington Capitals by score 5-4.

  • 1993 - General Motors sues NBC, after Dateline NBC allegedly rigged two crashes showing that some GM pickups can easily catch fire if hit in certain places.
