- 1958 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the film The Littlest Outlaw, part two.
- 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Sancho the Homing Steer, part two.
- 1965 - Disney releases the live-action short film A Country Coyote Goes Hollywood to theaters.
- 1965 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Those Calloways to theaters. The film is based on the book Swiftwater by Paul Annixter.
- 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Pablo and the Dancing Chihuahua, part one.
- 1979 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Shadow of Fear, part one.
- 1980 - The Industrial Bank of Japan announces it and nearly 30 other Japanese banks have agreed to loan money to the Oriental Land Company to build a US$300 million Disney theme park in Tokyo.
- 1982 - Wally Boag gives his last performance at the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland. He did the show almost continuously since its opening in 1955, putting him in the Guiness Book of Records for the most number of performances of a show.
- 1988 - Groundbreaking for the Dolphin Hotel and Swan Hotel complex begins in Walt Disney World.
- 1997 - The Gambia issues 16 postage stamps depicting scenes from Disney's Monkey King.
- 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A scene in a prison cell is similar to the one in Disney's Aladdin, where an old man helps a younger man escape out of a loose brick in the wall.
- 2006 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Rolex 24 at Daytona 24 Hours race is held, round one of the Grand American Rolex Series.
- Finishing 15th in GT class and 28th overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Ray Mason, Michael Baughman, John Connolly, Frank Del Vecchio, and Bryan Collyer.
- Finishing 18th in GT class and 33rd overall is the Banner Racing #6 1999 Corvette, driven by Tommy Archer, Leighton Reese, Russ Oasis, and Dino Crescentini.
- Finishing 26th in GT class and 49th overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Vic Rice, Tommy Riggins, John Stevenson, Spencer Trenery, and Dominic Cicero II.
- Finishing 27th in GT class and 53rd overall is the WTF Engineering #48 Corvette, driven by Toni Seiler, Robert Dubler, Hans Hauser, Michael DeFontes, and Kurt Thiel.
- Finishing 31st in GT class and 60th overall is the WTF Engineering #55 Corvette, driven by Zach Arnold, Johnny Miller, Eric Koselke, Jay Poscente, and Mark Montgomery.
- 1941 - Vichy France ceases hostilities with Siam.
- 1942 - In Malaya, British troops begin a retreat from the mainland.
- 1945 - American troops regain the front lines against the Germans held on December 16. Allied armies suffered about 83,000 casualties, and lost about 800 tanks. Germany lost over 100,000 men, 800 tanks, and 1000 aircraft.
- 1988 - Atari Games signs an agreement with Nintendo, to become a licensed producer of game cartridges for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
- 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A man asks a boy wearing an electronic glove "What's the PowerGlove for?", a reference to the Mattel PowerGlove controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
- 1638 - In Stockholm Castle, French ballet master Antoine de Beaulieu produces the first ballet ever staged in Sweden, "Le Ballet des Plaisirs de la Vie des Enfants sans soucy".
- 1993 - The demilitarized zone between Norway and Sweden is agreed by the two countries to no longer be needed. It was initiated by the 1905 convention, at 15-km wide on both sides of the border.
- 2002 - Astrid Lidgren dies peacefully in her apartment in Stockholm. About 130 million of her books are in circulation, translated into 86 languages.
- 1987 - A Royal proclamation changes the reverse design of the new dollar coin to a common loon resting on a lake.
- 1993 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the design of the 1993 silver dollar coin, commemorating the 100th anniversary of hockey's Stanley Cup. Stewart Sherwood created the coin's design. Issue price is $23.95 for Proof, $17.50 for brilliant uncirculated.
- 1994 - At the Basel International Coin Fair in Switzerland, the Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 1994 silver dollar coin, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the last dog team patrol of the RCMP. The design was created by Ian Sparkes. The 0.925 fine silver coin is priced at $23.95 in Proof and $17.50 in uncirculated finish.

- 1922 - American Pro Football Association renamed "National Football League".
- 1922 - J E Clair turns Green Bay franchise back to NFL.
- 1929 - Birth of Richard Clement Charles Thomas rugby international/journalist.
- 1930 - Clarence Skelton Wimble cricket (score pair in Test for South Africa), dies.
- 1932 - Birth of W Parry O'Brien California, shot putter (Olympics-2 gold/silver-1952, 1956, 1960, 1964).
- 1934 - Birth of Bill White US, first baseman (Saint Louis Cardinals)/ announcer (New York Yankees)/president (National League).

- 1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defend their NFL Championship, winning their 4th Super Bowl overall with a 55-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most Valuable Player is quarterback Joe Montana of the 49ers.

- 1996 - 84th Australian Men's Tennis: Boris Becker beats Michael Chang (6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2).
- 1996 - Dan Duva, boxing promoter, dies at 44.
- 1996 - The Dallas Cowboys become the first NFL franchise to win three Super Bowls in a span of four seasons, as they defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. It is the Cowboys' 5th Super Bowl championship. Larry Brown, Defensive Back, is named Most Valuable Player.

- 1986 - 25th Space Shuttle mission (51L) - Challenger 10 explodes 73 seconds after liftoff. Killed are: Christa McAuliffe (teacher), Dr Judith Arlene Resnik, USAF Major Ellison S Onizuka Hawaii, USAF Francis R Scobee Washington, payload specialist Gregory B. Jarvis, USN Commander Michael J Smith, Ronald E McNair.
- 1262 - Flemish/Dutch coast ravaged by north western storm.
- 1872 - In Samaxi (Shemakha), Azerbaijan (Azerbaydzhan, Russia), a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurs. 188 killed. Samaxi almost completely destroyed; about 30,000 people left homeless.
