Personal computer history:

  • 1993 - IBM Chairman John Akers submits his resignation as chairman of the company.
  • 1998 - Intel releases the 333 MHz Pentium II processor with MMX instructions, with a 66 MHz bus. It incorporates 0.25 micron CMOS manufacturing process. It is packaged in a Single Edge Contact cartridge for the Slot 1 interface. It contains 512 kB of Level 2 cache, operating at 167 MHz. Code-name during development was Deschutes. Price is US$722 in 1000 chip quantities.
  • 2004 - The British Foreign Office announces that Microsoft's Bill Gates has been selected to receive an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. Gates will become a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Gates was selected because of the impact on the British economy brought on by the transformation of business practices due to Microsoft technology.
  • 2004 - Romania issues four postage stamps depicting a CD-ROM, diskette, laptop computer, and on screen is a user at a desktop computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1945 - The Donald Duck film The Clock Watcher is released to theaters.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the second "Davy Crockett" episode, Davy Crockett Goes to Congress.
  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Bristle Face, part one.
  • 1972 - The TV series The Mouse Factory debuts.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Sky's the Limit, part two.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the educational film The Bones and Muscles Get Rhythm. It is part of the Wonders of Life series.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the educational film The Brain and the Nervous System Think Science. It is part of the Wonders of Life series.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the educational film The Heart and Lungs Play Ball. It is part of the Wonders of Life series.
  • 1991 - The ABC TV network airs Tag Team, a pilot for a series.
  • 1994 - The Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin attraction opens in Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland.
  • 1996 - The first car race is held at the Walt Disney World Speedway, a Formula Ford 2000 support race.
  • 2011 - The Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream cruise ship begins its maiden voyage, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

  • 2007 - In Kissimmee, Florida, the Mecum Corvettes & Muscle auction is held, over two days. Some highlights:
    • 1954 Sportsman Red roadster: US$85,000;
    • 1966 427-ci engine, raced in A Production 1966-68: US$345,000;
    • 1966 Tuxedo Black coupe, 427-ci 425-hp engine, side exhausts, knockoff wheels: US$125,000;
    • 1967 Marina Blue convertible, 427-ci 435-hp engine, 44000 miles: US$195,000;
    • 1967 Ermine White convertible, 427-ci 435-hp engine, both tops, 40,000 miles: US$175,000;
    • 1967 Sunfire Yellow convertible, 427-ci 435-hp engine: US$175,000;

  • 2019 - (to January 27) At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florisa, USA, the Rolex 24 at Daytona race is held, round 1 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 6th in GT Le Mans class and 16th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia, and Mike Rockenfeller.
    • Finishing 8th in GT Le Mans class and 28th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner, Oliver Gavin, and Marcel Fassler.

World War II history:

  • 1934 - Germany and Poland sign a ten-year Declaration of Non-Aggression.
  • 1942 - The first American soldiers arrive in Britain, landing in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  • 1943 - In Canada, the National Research Council receives a $50,000 grant to quickly study the construction of Habbakuk ice ships.
  • 1944 - General Christison's 15th Corps of 5th and 7th Indian Divisions begins its objective of recapturing Akyab island on the Arakan coast of Burma. The 5th Division attacks Razabil, but fails after four days.
  • 1945 - (0725 hours) In Holland, the Canadian 4th Armoured Division launches Operation Elephant, to take Kapelsche Veer on a small island in the Maas River from German occupation.
  • 1945 - American 2nd Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy kills or wounds about fifty German soldiers.
  • 1945 - British Air Ministry head Charles Portal seeks and receives approval from SHAEF Chiefs of Staff and General Spatz for one big air attack on Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, or Chemnitz, where such an attack would hamper German troop movement and evacuation from the eastern front.
  • 1946 - In Genoa, Italy, the Pavia tribunal sentences to death former Fascist Prefect of Genoa Carlo Emanuele Basile.
  • 1994 - Guinea issues twelve postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings.

Video game history:

  • 1987 - In Japan, Enix releases the Dragon Quest II video game for the Famicom.
  • 1999 - Konami releases the Castlevania 64 video game for the Nintendo 64.
  • 2010 - Electronic Arts releases the Mass Effect 2 video game for the Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1947 - Prince Gustaf Adolf dies in an airplane crash at Kastrup.
  • 1956 - (to February 5) The 7th Olympic Winter Games are held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Sweden wins 2 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
  • 2004 - In Stockholm, the Stockholm Genocide Conference is held, over three days. 58 countries are represented; about 1000 delegates attend.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1981 - A & W International changes its name to A & W Restaurants.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1973 - Olympic organizer Louis de Chantigny unveils plans for a proposal to market commemorative Olympic coins for the 1976 Summer Olympic games in Montreal, Quebec. The 4-year series of $5 and $10 silver coins, and $100 gold coins, will be issued to collectors to help fund the Olympic games.
  • 1996 - In Basel, Switzerland, the Basel International Coin Convention is held, over three days. The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the bimetallic $2 circulating coin, and a special collector coin. The collector coin has a gold inner core, and silver/gold outer ring. Mintage limited to 5000, price is $299.95.
  • 2007 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils plans for the 2010 Olympic coin program. Over four years, 17 circulating commemoratives will be released, including circulating $1 2008 Lucky Loonie depicting loon leaving water, and circulating $1 2010 depicting Vancouver Olympic logo.

USA coin history:

  • 1796 - Presidential proclamation reduces weight of half cents.
  • 1876 - Mint Director H.R. Linderman examines a proposed site for a branch mint in Columbus, Ohio.
  • 1926 - US Representative John Miller introduces H.R. 8306 to create an Oregon Trail commemorative half dollar coin.
  • 1984 - Mint Director Donna Pope changes name of Bureau of the Mint to U.S. Mint.
  • 2004 - The US Mint releases the 2004 Michigan State quarter dollar coin to circulation.
  • 2009 - The US Mint releases the District of Columbia quarter dollar to circulation.
  • 2010 - (to January 27) Stack's conducts the Americans coin auction at the Florida United Numismatists convention. Some highlights:
    • 1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief, Roman Numerals gold $20, Proof-68 NGC: $230,000.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - British Rugby Union forms.
  • 1913 - Jim Thorpe relinquishes his 1912 Olympic medals for being a professional player.
  • 1921 - Soccer team GVAV of Groningen Netherlands forms.
  • 1921 - Hockey's Toronto Saints' Pat Corb Denneny scores six goals versus Hamilton Tigers.
  • 1924 - Charles Jewtraw, US 500m skater, takes first Winter Olympics gold medal.
  • 1934 - Donald Bradman scores 128 New South Wales versus Victoria, 96 minutes, 17 fours 4 sixes.
  • 1951 - Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1956 - (to February 5) The VII Olympic Winter Games are held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
  • 1956 - Hank Greenberg and Joe Cronin are elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1957 - Joseph F Cairnes succeeds Lou Perini as president of Milwaukee Braves.
  • 1958 - Marlene Hagge wins LPGA Lake Worth Open Golf Invitational.
  • 1960 - Danny Heater scores 135 points in basketball game (Boys' High School).
  • 1960 - Oakland enters the AFL.
  • 1960 - Pete Rozelle elected NFL commissioner on the 23rd ballot.
  • 1963 - Major League Rules Committee votes to expand strike zone.
  • 1966 - Ard Schenk skates world record 1500m (2:06.2).
  • 1976 - 6th NFL Pro Bowl: NFC beats AFC 23-20.
  • 1977 - Soviet figure skaters Sergei Shakrai and Marine Tcherkasova are first to perform a quadruple twist lift, in Helsinki, Finland.
  • 1980 - Mary Decker runs a mile in under 4.5 minutes.
  • 1980 - New York Islanders and Hartford Whalers play a NHL penalty-free game.
  • 1981 - Sandeep Patil scores memorable 174 versus Australia at Adelaide Oval.
  • 1982 - New York Islanders score four goals within 1:38, five within 2:37 versus Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • 1984 - Quebec Nordiques' Michel Goulet scores on 9th penalty shot against New York Islanders.
  • 1986 - Hein Vergeer becomes European skating champ.
  • 1986 - Super Bowl XX: Chicago Bears beat New England Patriots, 46-10 in New Orleans, Louisiana; Most Valuable Player: Richard Dent, Defensive End.

  • 1991 - Houston Rockets' guard Vernon Maxwell is fourth NBA player to score 30 points in a quarter.
  • 1991 - Jan Stenerud becomes first pure placekicker to make NFL Hall of Fame.
  • 1992 - 80th Australian Mens Tennis: Jim Courier beats Stefan Edberg (6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
  • 1992 - The Washington Redskins defeat the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI football at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • 1993 - West Indies defeats Australia by one run in fourth Test at Adelaide.
  • 1997 - 85th Australian Mens Tennis: Pete Sampras beats Carlos Moya (6-2, 6-3, 6-3).
  • 1997 - Brunswick World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by John Gant.
  • 1997 - The Green Bay Packers win the NFL Championship for the first time since 1967, defeating the New England Patriots 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

  • 2009 - Kansas City Royals' pitcher Zack Greinke agrees to a four-year contract worth US$38 million.

  • 2000 - At the Desert Inn casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cynthia Jay-Brennan wins $34,959,458.56 on a Megabucks slot machine, the world's largest payout. She had entered a total of $27.
  • 2005 - Two trains derail, killing 11 and injuring 200, in Glendale, California near Los Angeles.
  • 2008 - In South Carolina, USA, the Democratic caucuses choose Barack Obama as candidate for the presidential election on November. The Republican caucuses choose John McCain.
  • 2009 - The world's largest drug company, Pfizer of New York, announces it will acquire rival Wyeth for US$68 billion.
  • 2009 - The US Senate confirms Tim Geithner as Treasury Secretary.
  • 2010 - Dutch auto group Spyker signs a deal to buy Sweden's Saab from General Motors for US$74 million in cash, $100 million from Saab operating capital, and $326 million in deferred shares of Saab Spyker Automobiles.

Other history:

  • 1531 - Lisbon, Portugal, hit by Earthquake; about 30,000 die.
  • 1926 - Television is first demonstrated, by John Baird, in London, England.
  • 1950 - India becomes a republic, ceasing to be a British dominion.
