Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Apple Computer introduces the Macintosh Office, with the first two products being the Appletalk network, and the LaserWriter laser printer. A US$50 kit will be available for connecting a Macintosh to the 230 kbps Appletalk network. The LaserWriter is priced at US$6995.
  • 1985 - Apple Computer officially renames the Lisa 2/10 computer as the Macintosh XL. Price is US$3995.
  • 1996 - Sun Microsystems ships the Java 1.0 development kit.
  • 1997 - In Dallas, Texas, Texas Instruments announces it will sell its notebook computer business to Acer Group of Taiwan.
  • 2001 - Microsoft and Sun Microsystems settle their Java lawsuit. Microsoft will pay Sun US$20 million, and is permanently prohibited from using the "Java compatible" trademark on its products. The Sun-Microsoft licensing agreement will be terminated, but Microsoft is permitted to use a version of Java in its products for the next seven years.
  • 2001 - Transvirtual Technologies releases the PocketLinux operating system for a variety of handheld computers.
  • 2003 - NEC introduces the VersaPro Tablet PC in Japan. It features 10.4-inch screen, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, 933 MHz Intel Pentium III processor, 256 MN RAM, 20 GB hard drive, 802.11b wireless communications. Weight is 2.2 pounds; size is 0.5 inches thick. Price is 296,000 yen (about US$2500) in Japan.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Neck 'n' Neck to theaters.
  • 1931 - The Silly Symphony film Birds of a Feather is completed.
  • 1942 - Disney delivers the film The New Spirit to the War Activities Committee of Motion Pictire Industry.
  • 1948 - The Goofy film They're Off is released.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Our Friend the Atom.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the fourth "Tales of Texas John Slaughter" episode, Showdown at Sandoval.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Moon Pilot, part two.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled Donald and Jose, Olé!. It includes segments from the films The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos.
  • 1992 - The Eagle Pines golf course and Bonnet Creek Golf Club open at Walt Disney World.
  • 1995 - Sierra Leone issues eleven postage stamps depicting Disney characters and Christmas themes.
  • 1995 - Sierra Leone issues twelve postage stamps depicting Donald Duck paintings inspired by old masters.
  • 2000 - In Los Angeles, Phil Collins wins a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, for the song "You'll Be in My Heart", from the film Tarzan.
  • 2006 - The Disney board of directors turns down Michael Eisner's plea to not buy Pixar Animation Studios for US$7.4 billion.
  • 2006 - The Walt Disney Company names its headquarters building in Burbank, California, after former chairman Michael Eisner.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1999 - The Corvette assembly plant builds 20 sets of racing components for C5 Corvettes, and sells them to GM Performance Parts. From there, they will be sold to a group of private individuals around the country.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - British carrier Illustrious sets sail from Malta, headed to the United States for repairs.
  • 1941 - Five Norwegian ships transport 25,000 tons of special steel products from Sweden to Britain, in a move called Operation Rubble. All five ships make it through German-controlled water, to Royal Navy escort to Kirkwall, Scotland.
  • 1942 - British aircraft spot German battleship Tirpitz near Trondheim, Norway.
  • 1943 - A German plan for the systematic destruction of Le Panier, Marseille, France, commences. 25,000 people are ordered out, 804 Jews arrested (none survive). Over the next two weeks, the area is packed with explosives.
  • 1943 - In North Africa, British 8th Army forces capture Tripoli.
  • 1943 - The United States 8th Air Force flies its first bombing mission over Germany, against Wilhelmshaven.
  • 1944 - A German Hs 293 guided aerial bomb damages British destroyer Jervis.
  • 1945 - German Dr. Hans Gisevius crosses from Germany into Switzerland, after hiding since July 20, 1944.
  • 1946 - In Paris, France, the Court of Justice condemns Jean Luchaire to death for collaborating with Germans for personal gain.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Japanese taking Rabaul.

Video game history:

  • 1997 - In Tokyo, Japan, Sega Enterprises and Bandai announce they will merge companies in a US$1.08 billion stock swap. The combined company name is to be Sega Bandai Limited, based in Tokyo.
  • 1999 - Sony Computer Entertainment introduces the PocketStation handheld video game system in Japan. Games are downloaded from the PlayStation in a new format. Price is about US$25.
  • 2002 - Sony begins selling a PS One with plug-in LCD screen, for US$200.

Sports history:

  • 1879 - National Archery Association formed, Crawfordsville Indiana.
  • 1902 - Winnipeg Victorias sweep Toronto Wellingtons in two for the Stanley Cup.
  • 1943 - Detroit Red Wings scores NHL record 8 goals in one period.
  • 1944 - Detroit Red Wings score 15 goals against New York Rangers and NHL record 37 points, also most consecutive goals and most lopsided game 15-0.
  • 1948 - Bradman scores 201 in 272 minutes versus India, 21 fours 1 six.
  • 1948 - Test debut of Neil Harvey, versus India at Adelaide.
  • 1950 - AP picks "Miracle Braves" of 1914 as greatest sports upset.
  • 1950 - NFL rule changes open way for two-platoon system (offense and defense).
  • 1953 - Bobby Simpson makes first-class debut for New South Wales at age 16 years 357 days.
  • 1953 - NFL Dallas Texans become Baltimore Colts (later Indianapolis Colts).
  • 1953 - NFL's National and American conferences become Eastern and Western conferences.
  • 1954 - Longest undefeated streak in Toronto Maple Leaf history (18 games).
  • 1955 - Babe Didrikson-Zaharias wins LPGA Tampa Golf Open.
  • 1958 - Hanif Mohammad completes 337 in 970 minutes versus West Indies.
  • 1962 - Bob Feller and Jackie Robinson elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1965 - BPAA All-Star Tournament won by Dick Weber.
  • 1965 - Boston Celtics' center Bill Russell misses all 14 shots in loss to Philadelphia Warriors led by Wilt Chamberlain.
  • 1967 - Stan Musial is named general manager of Saint Louis Cardinals.
  • 1968 - Joe Medwick elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1971 - 4th ABA All-Star Game: East 126 beats West 122 at Carolina.
  • 1972 - Ard Schenk becomes European all-round skating champ.
  • 1972 - Second NFL Pro Bowl: AFC beats NFC 26-13.
  • 1973 - 23rd NBA All-Star Game: East beats West 104-84 at Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1975 - Ralph Kiner elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.
  • 1976 - Ian Redpath hits his only two sixes in Cricket Tests, versus West Indies Adelaide.
  • 1976 - Washington Capitals end 25-game winless streak (0-22-3) beating New York Rangers 7-5.
  • 1978 - 8th NFL Pro Bowl: NFC beats AFC 14-13.
  • 1979 - Willie Mays elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1981 - Mike Bossy becomes first in NHL to score 50 goals in 50 games.
  • 1981 - Boston Red Sox trade Fred Lynn to California Angels for Frank Tanana and Joe Rudi.
  • 1983 - Houston Rockets is first NBA team to be held scoreless in an overtime Portland Trail Blazers out-score them 17-0 and win 113-96.
  • 1983 - Schöne skates ladies world record 5 km (7:40.97).
  • 1984 - Greatest unpaced one-hour bicycle distance, F Moser (Italy), 51.15 km.
  • 1984 - Buffalo Sabres win NHL record 10th straight road game.
  • 1988 - 62nd Australian Women's Tennis: Steffi Graf beats Chris Evert (6-1, 7-6).
  • 1988 - Bob Benoit bowls first 300-point game in a televised title match.
  • 1989 - NBA New Jersey Nets begin a 32+ game road losing streak.
  • 1990 - Dean Jones scores twin Test tons versus Pakistan at Adelaide Oval.
  • 1993 - Graham Gooch scores his 100th 100, on tour at Cuttack.
  • 1993 - US female Figure Skating championship won by Nancy Kerrigan.
  • 1994 - Bernie Kosar is second quarterback to throw touchdown passes in AFC and NFC Championship games.
  • 1996 - Chris Cairns scores 120, 96 balls, 10x4, 9x6 in Test New Zealand versus Zimbabwe.

Space exploration history:

  • 1930 - Clyde Tombaugh photographs planet Pluto.
  • 1970 - Australia's first amateur radio satellite (Oscar 5) launched (from California).
  • 1970 - US launches second generation weather satellite, ITOS 1.
  • 1983 - Russian radioactive satellite falls into Indian Ocean.
  • 1986 - Columbia returns to Kennedy Space Center via Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
  • 2003 - Communication ends between Earth and Pioneer 10.
  • 2008 - At the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, New York, Virgin Galactic unveils the design of its next generation of space vehicles, named White Knight Two, and SpaceShipTwo, intending to take paying passengers into space on a regular basis next year.
  • 2009 - Japan launches an H-2A rocket carrying eight satellites into space; one satellite is to monitor greenhouse gases over the Earth's surface.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1556 - In Shensi Province, China, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurs. Worst death toll in history: 830,000 deaths.
  • 1812 - In New Madrid Area, Missouri, a magnitude 7.0 - 7.8 earthquake occurs, one of the largest earthquakes in the United States.
  • 1855 - In Wellington, New Zealand, a magnitude 8.0 - 8.2 earthquake occurs. Four people died, one in Wellington and three in Wairarapa.
  • 1971 - Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska, (north of Fairbanks) reaches a US record low temperature of -80 degrees F.
  • 1973 - Helgafell, island of Heimaey Iceland erupts for first time in 7,000 years.
  • 1981 - In Sichuan Province, China, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurs. One hundred fifty people killed, 300 injured and extensive damage in the Dawu area.

Other history:

  • 1988 - Experimental airplane Voyager, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, complete the fist nonstop, round-the-world flight without landing for refueling.
  • 2002 - Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is kidnapped in Pakistan, accused of being a CIA agent by his captors.
