Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring Man and the Moon.
  • 1982 - Attendance at Walt Disney World reaches a high of 123,000 for the day.
  • 1998 - Azerbaijan issues a postage stamp for the World Rapid Chess Championship, depicting Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
  • 2005 - Early in the day, a six-story tall plastic Christmas tree catches fire in Disneyland's Grand Californian Hotel.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - Production of 1954 model Corvettes begins, in St. Louis.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - A Halifax aircraft takes off from Tangmere with three commando units, destined for Czechoslovakia, on a mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich.
  • 1941 - The first formal American meeting on biological warfare is held, in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive 47, regarding command and defence measures in the South-east, including Crete, German and Italian bases in the Aegean Sea, and the Balkan peninsula.
  • 1943 - Adolf Hitler issues orders forbidding withdrawal of personnel or material from France, Belgium, or Holland areas.
  • 1943 - With the Canadian 1st Division close to Highway 16 northwest of Ortona, Italy, German defenders withdraw from the city.
  • 1945 - A Canadian military court in Aurich, Germany, finds German Major-General Kurt Meyer responsible for the murder of 18 Canadian prisoners of war, though not guilty of giving the order. The sentence is execution by firing squad.
  • 1967 - Poland issues two postage stamps depicting memorials to the 1939-45 struggle.
  • 1990 - Malagasy issues a 100-franc postage stamp depicting Charles de Gaulle and the 1944 liberation of Paris.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Tom Bundy scores a world record 4,787,665 on the Kickman arcade game.

USA coin history:

  • 1912 - First San Francisco Mint nickel enters circulation, as San Francisco Mayor James J. Rolph Jr. pays the fare for the San Francisco Municipal Railway.
  • 1915 - Treasury announces coin design competition for silver fractional coins.
  • 1977 - Stella Hackel, attorney from Vermont, is sworn in as US Mint Director.

Sports history:

  • 1887 - Sir John Layton Jarvis becomes first British race horse trainer to be knighted.
  • 1902 - First indoor pro football game, Syracuse beats Philadelphia 6-0 (Madison Square Garden, New York City).
  • 1905 - Intercollegiate Athletic Association of US founded (becomes NCAA in 1910).
  • 1905 - New South Wales all out for 805 versus Victoria in cricket, win by innings and 253.
  • 1926 - Arthur Mailey takes 4-362 off 64 overs (no maidens) New South Wales versus Victoria in cricket.
  • 1926 - Bill Ponsford scores 352 and Ryder 295 in cricket against New South Wales.
  • 1938 - Paul Gibb scores 106 on Test Cricket debut versus South Africa.
  • 1940 - Arthur Morris scores 111 in second innings of first game after 148.
  • 1947 - Chicago Cardinals beat Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in NFL championship game.
  • 1952 - Detroit Lions beat Cleveland Browns 17-7 in NFL championship game.
  • 1954 - 43rd Davis Cup: USA beats Australia in Sydney (3-2).
  • 1955 - 44th Davis Cup: Australia beats USA in New York (5-0).
  • 1957 - CBS states it won't broadcast baseball where minor league games are on.
  • 1968 - 57th Davis Cup: USA beats Australia in Adelaide (4-1).
  • 1969 - Dallas Cowboys' kicker Mike Clark, attempting an on-side kick against Cleveland Browns, misses the ball.
  • 1975 - "Hail Mary Pass" - Dallas Cowboys beat Minnesota Vikings 17-14 on last second pass.
  • 1975 - Gary Cosier scores 109 versus West Indies at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Test Cricket debut.
  • 1975 - Red Army beats New York Rangers 7-3 at Madison Square Garden, New York.
  • 1978 - 30th hat trick in New York Islanders' history (Mike Bossy).
  • 1983 - 72nd Davis Cup: Australia beats Sweden in Melbourne (3-2).
  • 1983 - Gavaskar achieves his 30th century, beating Donald Bradman's 29.
  • 1983 - Warren Cromartie signs three year US$2.5 million contract with Yomiuri Giants.
  • 1986 - Pat Davis, ranked 412th among world tennis competitors, wins Davis Cup.
  • 1990 - Blockbuster Bowl 1: Florida State beats Pennsylvania State, 24-17.
  • 1991 - Eight are crushed to death at a RAP basketball game at City College, New York City, New York.
  • 1991 - Blockbuster Bowl 2: Alabama beats Colorado, 30-25.
  • 1993 - John Maclean passes Kirk Muller as all-time New Jersey Devils scorer (521 points).
  • 1994 - Boon completes his 20th Test Cricket century (131 versus England, Melbourne Cricket Ground).
  • 1996 - India all out for 66 at Durban after making 100 in cricket first inning.
  • 1997 - Sting beats Hollywood Hogan for WCW Championship.
  • 2005 - The Chicago White Sox and Jon Garland sign a three-year, US$29 million contract.
  • 2008 - The Detroit Lions end the football season with no wins, sixteen losses, the worst losing record in NFL history.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Arizona Coyotes by score 8-4.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Los Angeles Kings by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Montreal Canadiens by score 5-4.

Space exploration history:

  • 1612 - Galileo Galilei becomes the first astronomer to observe the planet Neptune, although he mistakenly catalogues it as a fixed star.
  • 1973 - Comet Kohoutek at perihelion.

USA history:

  • 1816 - American Colonization Society organizes.
  • 1832 - John Calhoun becomes first US Vice-President to resign (differences with President Andrew Jackson).
  • 1846 - Iowa admitted as 29th state of the USA.
  • 1861 - New York bankers unanimously decide to suspend specie payments on December 30.
  • 1861 - US government suspends specie payments (gold) for paper money.
  • 1864 - Battle of Egypt Station, Mississippi.
  • 1869 - William Finley Semple of Mount Vernon, Ohio, USA, patents chewing gum.
  • 1877 - John Stevens, Wisconsin, applies for a patent on his flour rolling mill.
  • 1898 - US President William McKinley proclaims US currency will circulate in Puerto Rico as of January 1, 1899.
  • 1912 - The first municipally-owned streetcars take to the streets in San Francisco, California.
  • 1933 - US President Franklin Roosevelt orders private holders of gold certificates to deliver them to the US Treasurer.
  • 1939 - The Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber prototype first flies.
  • 1945 - US Congress officially recognizes "Pledge of Allegiance".
  • 1966 - Thirteen die in a train crash in Everett, Massachusetts, USA.
  • 1968 - 100,000 attend Miami Pop Festival, Florida.
  • 1969 - Neil Simon's Last of the Red Hot Lovers premieres in New York City, New York.
  • 1976 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1980 - México terminates fishing agreements with US.
  • 1983 - US says they will leave UNESCO on December 31, 1984.

  • 1987 - In Arkansas, USA, R Gene Simmons kills two, later bodies of 14 of his relatives are found at his home near Dover.
  • 1988 - US second Circuit Court of Appeals affirms Yonkers is guilty of racism.
  • 1990 - Two die in a New York City subway accident.
  • 1991 - Ted Turner is named Time magazine Man of the Year.
  • 2000 - U.S. retail giant Montgomery Ward announces it is going out of business, after 128 years.
