Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - The Roxy Theatre in New York City premieres the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Empty Socks.
  • 1950 - The first Disney TV special, One Hour in Wonderland airs on NBC, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company (cost US$100,000). Walt Disney and several Disney cartoon characters make their TV debut. Walt's daughter Sharon also appears. The show previews portions of the film Alice in Wonderland. About 20 million viewers watch the show.
  • 1951 - The CBS TV network airs the special, The Walt Disney Christmas Show, sponsored by the Johnson and Johnson Company.
  • 1953 - Disney releases the Goofy film How to Sleep to theaters.
  • 1953 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Canvas Back Duck to theaters. Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Pete also appear.
  • 1955 - The Mike Fink Keel Boats ride opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1955 - Buena Vista releases the animated short film Johnny Appleseed to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film Melody Time.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the seventh People and Places film, Samoa, to theaters.
  • 1957 - Disney releases the tenth People and Places film, Portugal, to theaters.
  • 1957 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action film Old Yeller to theaters. The film is based on the book by Fred Gipson.
  • 1958 - Disney releases the fourteenth People and Places film Seven Cities of Antarctica to theaters.
  • 1958 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Tonka to theaters. The film is based on the novel Comanche by David Appel.
  • 1963 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Sword in the Stone to theaters. The film is based on the book by T.H. White.
  • 1969 - The live arena show Disney on Parade debuts in Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1975 - Disney releases the animated film The Madcap Adventures of Mr. Toad. The film was originally released as part of the film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
  • 1975 - Buena Vista test screens the live-action feature film Ride A Wild Pony in the Fine Arts Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1982 - Disney re-releases the film Peter Pan to theaters in the US.
  • 1983 - The ABC TV network airs Walt Disney World's Very Merry Christmas Parade for the first time. Walt Disney World buys TV time for the first time to air the show.
  • 1984 - The ABC TV network airs the two hour show Walt Disney World's Very Merry Christmas Parade.
  • 1985 - The Disney Channel airs Walt Disney World's Very Merry Christmas Parade.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Tombstone to theaters in the US.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book to theaters.
  • 1996 - Buena Vista Pictures premieres the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Evita in select theaters in the US.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film Mr. Magoo to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Kundun to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - The Hollywood Pictures film An American Werewolf in Paris is released to theaters.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Mighty Joe Young to theaters in the USA.
  • 1998 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures / Paramount Pictures live-action feature film A Civil Action to theaters in Los Angeles and New York in the USA.
  • 1999 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Play it to the Bone to theaters in the USA.
  • 1999 - Buena Vista generally releases the Touchstone Pictures film Cradle Will Rock to theaters in the USA.
  • 2002 - IMAX Corporation and Disney release the film The Lion King to IMAX and other large screen theaters in France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
  • 2005 - Disney makes a limited release of the Touchstone Pictures film Casanova to thesters in the USA.
  • 2005 - The British Broadcasting Corporation airs the television show Doctor Who in the United Kingdom. The Doctor says "From the day they arrive on the planet... more to do than... no hold on, sorry that's The Lion King".
  • 2008 - Disney releases the film Bedtime Stories to theaters in the USA.
  • 2021 - The ABC TV network in the USA airs the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade hosted by Juliana and Derek Hough at Walt Disney World.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - The Soviet Attaché in Berlin passes on to Moscow Hitler's Directive 21 of December 18, the operational order for Barbarossa.
  • 1941 - The Canadian Royal Rifles attack Japanese forces on Hong Kong Island.
  • 1941 - Japanese forces capture Jolo.
  • 1941 - US General MacArthur occupies the Corregidor island fortress.
  • 1941 - (1500 hours) The British commander of forces in Hong Kong gives an order to cease fire.
  • 1941 - (1515 hours Hong Kong) Hong Kong, with Canadian and British troops, surrenders to Japan. Nearly 2000 died in the fight.
  • 1943 - German battle cruiser Scharnhorst sails to attack convoy JW-55B.
  • 1944 - German forces launch an all-out attack on Bastogne, France.
  • 1944 - US forces complete the capture of Leyte Island in the Philippines.
  • 1944 - US General George Patton shifts his main attack in France to the Neufchâteau-Bastogne road.
  • 1944 - US 7th Corps recaptures Celles, France.
  • 1952 - German former army commander Wilhelm List is pardoned and freed from captivity.
  • 1953 - The United States returns control of the Amami Islands, north of Okinawa, to Japan.

Video game history:

  • 2003 - 20th Century Fox releases the film Cheaper by the Dozen to theaters in the USA and Canada. A Nintendo GameCube video game system appears in one scene.
  • 2006 - A hacker releases a custom 3.02 firmware for the PlayStation Portable allowing any PlayStation game to be played from a Memory Stick.

Sports history:

  • 1888 - First indoor baseball game played at fairgrounds in Philadelphia.
  • 1894 - First midwestern football team to play on west coast, University of Chicago defeats Stanford 24-4 at Palo Alto, California.
  • 1928 - Christmas Day attendance at cricket Melbourne Cricket Ground (Victoria versus New South Wales) 14,887.
  • 1928 - New South Wales (versus Victoria) go from 8-74 to 9-113 to be 9-367 at stumps.
  • 1929 - Clarrie Grimmett takes 6-146 in cricket for South Africa, Queensland all out 380; Crowd 5,390.
  • 1930 - First US bobsled run open to the public (Mount Van Hoevenberg bobsled run at Lake Placid, New York).
  • 1930 - Slinger Nitschke scores 142 South Africa versus Queensland at Adelaide before 5,422.

  • 1931 - Leslie Fleetwood-Smith takes 5-69 Victoria versus Tasmania at Hobart.
  • 1933 - Another Christmas Day five-wicket haul by Clarrie Grimmett.
  • 1933 - Stan Smith takes 8-33 for Victoria versus Tasmania at Hobart.
  • 1934 - Four centuries for South Africa as they make 7-644 versus Queensland before 6,180.
  • 1936 - Ron Hamence scores 104 for South Africa versus Queensland before 4,865.

  • 1971 - Longest NFL game (3 hours 21 minutes) as Miami Dolphins beat Kansas City Chiefs 27-24.
  • 1972 - England beats India by six wickets in the first Test Cricket at Delhi.
  • 1979 - Opening day of fourth Test Cricket, India 8-112 versus Pakistan at Kanpur.
  • 1982 - Mudassar Nazar scores century, then Imran rips through Indians.
  • 1984 - NBA's Bernard King scores 60 points.
  • 1991 - Last day of a washout Pakistan versus Sri Lanka at Gujranwala.

Space exploration history:

  • 1758 - Halley's comet first sighted by Johann Georg Palitzsch during return.
  • 1968 - Apollo 8 performs the first successful Trans Earth Injection (TEI) maneuver, sending the crew and spacecraft on a trajectory back to Earth from Lunar orbit.
  • 2003 - Beagle 2 is scheduled to land on Mars, but nothing is heard from the lander.
  • 2021 - NASA, the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency and the Space Telescope Science Institute launch the James Webb Space Telescope from French Guiana aboard a European Ariane 5 rocket.

  • 1717 - Floods ravage Dutch coast provinces, 1000s killed.
  • 1974 - Cyclone Tracy virtually destroys Darwin, Australia.
  • 2004 - An historic and unprecedented snowfall occurs over portions of southern Texas during the early morning hours. Daily totals include 1.5 inches at Brownsville, 3.5 inches at McAllen, 4.4 inches at Corpus Christi, and 12.1 inches at Victoria.

USA history:

  • 1775 - British Crown Post last day in American colonies.
  • 1831 - Louisiana and Arkansas are first US states to observe Christmas as holiday.
  • 1837 - Battle of Okeechobee: US forces defeat Seminole Indians.
  • 1847 - Lansing is established as the capital of Michigan.
  • 1848 - New Haven Railroad opens.
  • 1868 - Despite bitter opposition, US President Andrew Johnson grants unconditional pardon to all persons involved in the Southern rebellion (the Civil War).
  • 1896 - "Stars and Stripes Forever" written by John Philip Sousa.
  • 1899 - In Hemet-San Jacinto, California, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurs.
  • 1914 - Germans and Allies across the trenches cease firing and participate in an informal Christmas Truce.

  • 1931 - New York's Metropolitan Opera broadcasts an entire opera over radio.
  • 1939 - Montgomery Ward introduces Rudolph the 9th reindeer.

  • 1990 - Tim Berners-Lee creates the WorldWideWeb software browser for the NeXT computer, the first Web browser.
  • 1990 - The first successful communication between a client and server via the Internet is established.
  • 1997 - For first time US movie box office receipts pass US$6 billion.
  • 2004 - An historic and unprecedented snowfall occurs over portions of southern Texas during the early morning hours. Daily totals include 1.5 inches at Brownsville, 3.5 inches at McAllen, 4.4 inches at Corpus Christi, and 12.1 inches at Victoria.
  • 2007 - An escaped tiger at the San Francisco Zoo kills one person and injures two others.
  • 2009 - A Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, tries to ignite powder and liquid explosives on Northwest Airlines plane Flight 253 from Nigeria via Amsterdam as it is preparing to land in Detroit. The man is subdued and the plane lands safely with no injuries.

  • 597 - England adopts Julian calendar.
  • 800 - Pope Leo III crowns Charles the Great (Charlemagne), Roman emperor.
  • 1066 - William the Conqueror, crowned king of England.
  • 1818 - First known Christmas carol ("Silent Night, Holy Night" by Franz Joseph Gruber and Joseph Mohr) sung (Austria).
  • 1926 - Hirohito becomes emperor of Japan (1926-1989).
