Personal computer history:

  • 1999 - Malaysia issues a postage stamp for the Universal Postal Union's 125th anniversary depicting a personal computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - Walt Disney sends a second batch of six Mickey Mouse comic strips to King Features.
  • 1933 - Walt Disney receives an award from Parents magazine for the creation of Mickey Mouse.
  • 1941 - Walt Disney is called to Washington, D.C. to meet with the Treasury Department and the IRS. Walt is asked to provide a film to promote paying taxes, to be completed by the end of February, 1942.
  • 1942 - The Donald Duck film Bellboy Donald is released to theaters.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the ninth "Tales of Texas John Slaughter" episode, Range War at Tombstone.
  • 1960 - The Christmas in Many Lands parade begins this season's performances at Disneyland.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Escape to Paradise, showing portions of the films Swiss Family Robinson and Water Birds.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Disneyland Around the Seasons.
  • 1976 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film The Shaggy D.A. to theaters. The film is a sequel to the 1959 film The Shaggy Dog.
  • 1979 - Buena Vista premieres the film The Black Hole in London, England.
  • 1988 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, entitled Davy Crockett: A Natural Man.
  • 1989 - Sierra Leone issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters in classic cars.
  • 1991 - Disney and Jim Henson Productions sign an agreement for Disney to distribute Henson film productions on home video, for the next five to six years.
  • 1992 - The It's a Small World Toy Shoppe opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1992 - Warner Bros. Finland releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Finland.
  • 1993 - The ABC TV network airs A Musical Christmas at Walt Disney World.
  • 1994 - The Golden Horseshoe Jamboree closes at Disneyland.
  • 1994 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Characters watch film Alive! about surviving a plane crash and cannibalizing the co-pilot, with Spanish accents, similar to Disney's film Alive.
  • 2001 - Disney premieres the film Beauty and the Beast in giant screen theaters.
  • 2001 - Disney releases The Princess Diaries on videocassette.
  • 2007 - The CBS TV network airs the last Cane TV episode.
  • 2009 - The film Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and Abraham Lincoln audio-animatronic re-open in the Main Street Opera House on Main Street USA in Disneyland.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - 22 British Wellington bombers approach several warships at Wilhelmshaven. German forces intercept radio messages and tracked the incoming planes, launching fighters to intercept them. 12 of the bombers are shot down in about an hour.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 21 "Case Barbarossa". German Armed Forces are to be prepared to crush Soviet Russia in a rapid campaign. The final objective is to erect a barrier against Asiatic Russia on a line of Volga to Archangel. Rumania and Finland will give active support on the flanks of the German attack. The operation is named for the conquering 12th century Teutonic Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
  • 1941 - As part of Mediterranean Convoy HG76, British destroyer Blankney sinks German submarine U434.
  • 1941 - As part of Mediterranean Convoy HG76, German submarine U574 torpedoes and sinks British destroyer Stanley. There are 28 survivors.
  • 1941 - Japanese forces begin the invasion of Hong Kong Island, crossing the strait of Lye Mun Passage.
  • 1941 - Japanese submarine I-175 sinks SS Manini near the Hawaiian Islands.
  • 1941 - Six Italian frogmen in two-man submarines from the submarine Scirè enter the harbor entrance at Alexandria. They set three 550-pound explosive charges on the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant, and a tanker.
  • 1941 - (0555 hours) In Alexandria harbor, an underwater explosive blows the stern off a tanker.
  • 1941 - (0605 hours) In Alexandria harbor, an underwater explosion rocks British battleship HMS Valiant.
  • 1941 - (0615 hours) In Alexandria harbor, an underwater explosion rocks British battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth.
  • 1942 - England receives a report from Stockholm, from a Danish chemical engineer who heard a conversation about German rocket development with 5 tons of explosive, and range of 200 KM.
  • 1942 - Convoy JW-51A with fifteen merchant ships leaves Scotland headed for Murmansk, Soviet Union.
  • 1943 - Winston Churchill informs President Franklin Roosevelt that the British War Cabinet favors Bernard Montgomery for commander of the land forces in the invasion of Europe.
  • 1944 - German panzers bypass resistance at St. Vith, France, advancing around the town on the north and south.
  • 1944 - (evening) The German battleship Schleswig-Holstein is sunk.
  • 2000 - St. Vincent issues 18 postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1993 - Enix releases the Dragon Quest I & II Remix video game for the Super Famicom in Japan.
  • 2000 - Wolfson Microelectronics announces that Microsoft has selected the company to provide the WM9709 audio digital-to-analog converter for Microsoft's Xbox video game system.
  • 2001 - Square Electronic Arts releases the Final Fantasy X video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - The History Channel airs two one-hour documentatries: Brothers in Arms: The Road to Hill 30, using simulations created with Ubisoft's Brothers in Arms video game.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1871 - The Ralph Heaton & Sons mint strikes silver coins for the first time. 1000 1871-dated 50c pieces for Canada are made under special supervision of personnel from the Royal Mint.
  • 1937 - An Order in Council continues the prohibition of the export of gold coins, until December 31, 1938.
  • 1950 - A ceremony at the Royal Canadian Mint announces the winning entry for the design of the 5c commemorating the 200th anniversary of the discovery and naming of the element nickel. Stephen Trenka wins $1000 for his design. Four others win $250 for their runner-up designs. The Finance Minister strikes the first coin.

USA coin history:

  • 1882 - Philadelphia Mint superintendent Snowden replies to Treasury Secretary Charles Folger that the Coinage law of 1873 is in error on placement of words on sides, in regard to proposed 5-cent coin design.
  • 1942 - The Second War Powers Act is enacted as Public Law 77-815, authorizing 3-cent silver coins, and composition change for 1-cent coins to remove copper and substitute steel.
  • 1963 - The US Senate approves placement of John Kennedy's portrait on the half dollar coin.
  • 2007 - The US Senate passes H.R. 2764, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008, which includes authority to strike six 2009 quarter dollars to commemorate the District of Columbia and five territories, and another measure to move the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" on Presidential dollars from the edge to the obverse or reverse.

Sports history:

  • 1869 - Canada's Hamilton Foot Ball Club plays its first game.
  • 1894 - Cricket day four 1T Australia versus England; England following on 4-268, 7 in front.
  • 1905 - Cricketer H V Hordern takes 8-81 in second innings of F-C debut (New South Wales versus Queensland).
  • 1930 - Donald Bradman scores 258 New South Wales versus South Australia, 289 minutes, 37 fours.
  • 1932 - The Chicago Bears defeat the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 in the first ever NFL Championship Game.
  • 1935 - Donald Bradman scores 117 in his first Shield cricket match for South Australia.
  • 1936 - Queensland cricket all out for 49 versus Victoria, Leslie Fleetwood-Smith 7-17.
  • 1949 - Philadelphia Eagles beat Los Angeles Rams 14-0 in NFL championship game.
  • 1952 - Ellis W Ryan resigns as Cleveland Indians president.
  • 1956 - Phil Rizzuto signs as New York Yankees radio-TV announcer.
  • 1959 - Sammy Baugh named first coach of New York Titans (AFL).
  • 1961 - For second consecutive year, Associated Press names Wilma Rudolph female athlete of year.
  • 1961 - Wilt Chamberlain of NBA Philadelphia Warriors scores 78 points versus Los Angeles Lakers.
  • 1963 - Clarke runs world record 10km (28:15.6).
  • 1973 - New York Yankees sign Dick Williams as manager, overturned later by American League president.
  • 1977 - Cleveland Cavaliers retire jersey number 42 (Nate Thumond).
  • 1983 - NBA San Diego Clippers end 29-game road losing streak.
  • 1984 - 73rd Davis Cup: Sweden beats USA in Gothenburg (4-1).
  • 1988 - 5th meeting of San Francisco Giants-New York Jets, Jets win and eliminate Giants from playoffs.
  • 1988 - Seattle Seahawks win their first ever division title with 9-7 record.
  • 1990 - National League announces Buffalo, Denver, Miami, Orlando, Tampa-St Petersburg, and Washington DC as six finalist for 1993 expansion (Miami and Denver win).
  • 1993 - Kevin Scott skates world record 1000 metre (1:12.54).
  • 1994 - Norman, Couples and Azinger win LPGA Wendy's 3-Tour Golf Challenge.
  • 1996 - Start of first Test Cricket match between Zimbabwe and England.
  • 2002 - Jeff Kent signs an $18.2 million, two-year contract with the Houston Astros.
  • 2005 - The bat Pete Rose used to hit his 159th career home run in 1985 is acquired by GoldenPalace.com for $103,631.91 during Lelands Winter 2005 Auction. The on-line casino plans to saw the bat in half to determine if the bat is corked as is widely believed.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Seattle Kraken by score 5-3.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats New Jersey Devils by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Los Angeles Kings by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Philadelphia Flyers beats Ottawa Senators by score 4-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1839 - First celestial photograph (the moon) made in US, John Draper, New York City, New York.
  • 1849 - William Bond obtains first photograph of Moon through a telescope.
  • 1958 - First test project of Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment.
  • 1965 - Borman and Lovell splash down in Atlantic; ends two-week Gemini VII mission.
  • 1966 - Richard L. Walker discovers Saturn's moon Epimetheus.
  • 1973 - Soyuz 13 launched into Earth orbit for 8 days.
  • 1999 - NASA launches into orbit the Terra platform carrying five Earth Observation instruments: ASTER, CERES, MISR, MODIS and MOPITT.
  • 2019 - The CHEOPS space telescope, whose mission is to study the formation of extrasolar planets and determine their precise radius, likely density and internal structure, is launched.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1879 - The Tay Bridge in Scotland blows over in a great storm, taking evening mail train to Dundee and 76 passengers and crew.
  • 1944 - US Destroyers Hull, Spence, and Monaghan sink in typhoon off Philippines, 790 killed.

USA history:

  • 1777 - First US national Thanksgiving Day, commemorating Burgoyne's surrender.
  • 1787 - New Jersey is third state to ratify US Constitution.
  • 1796 - First US newspaper to appear on Sunday (Baltimore Monitor).
  • 1799 - George Washington's body interred at Mount Vernon.
  • 1813 - British take Fort Niagara in the War of 1812.

  • 1859 - South Carolina declares itself an "independent commonwealth".
  • 1862 - Battle at Lexington, Tennessee, CSA (Forrest's Second Raid).

  • 1922 - (10:20 AM) Federal Reserve pickup truck takes delivery of $200,000 in $5 Federal Reserve Notes from storage at the US Mint at Denver, Colorado. Four armed robbers steal the money, with one robber and one guard killed in shoot-out.
  • 1923 - US Senate confirms Robert J. Grant as Mint director.

  • 1991 - General Motors announces the closing of 21 plants.
  • 1996 - American TV industry executives agree to adopt a ratings system.
  • 1999 - NASA launches into orbit the Terra platform carrying five Earth Observation instruments: ASTER, CERES, MISR, MODIS and MOPITT.
  • 2009 - The UN climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, ends with a only compromise climate deal, and a vow to work out the details later. Leaders of the following countries sign on to the deal: Canada, USA, China, India, Brazil and South Africa. The agreement offers money to developing nations to help them fight global warming. The agreement is not binding and does not set new greenhouse-gas reduction targets.
  • 2019 - The U.S. House of Representatives approves two articles of impeachment against President Trump, making him the third president to be impeached in the nation's history.
  • 2020 - The United States approves Moderna's vaccine for emergency use, the second brand available there.

  • 1935 - Edward Benes becomes President of Czechoslovakia.
  • 1958 - Niger gains autonomy within French Community (National Day).
