Personal computer history:

  • 1989 - Xerox files a US$150 million lawsuit challenging the validity of Apple Computer's copyrights covering the Lisa and Macintosh computers' graphical user interface. Xerox claims Apple Computer copied the Xerox Star system interface.
  • 1990 - Apogee Software releases Episode one of the Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons game for personal computers, as shareware. The 2nd and 3rd episodes have to be paid for.
  • 1998 - Mattel completes its acquisition of The Learning Company for US$3.6 billion.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1934 - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer releases the film Babes in Toyland to theaters in the USA. A costumed child dressed like Mickey Mouse appears.
  • 1935 - The Silly Symphony film Broken Toys is released to theaters.
  • 1951 - The Donald Duck film Bee on Guard is released.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the fifth "Davy Crockett" episode, Davy Crockett and the River Pirates.
  • 1961 - Buena Vista releases Disney's first live-action musical feature film Babes in Toyland to theaters. The film is based on the operetta by Victor Herbert and Glen McDonough.
  • 1968 - The Board of Directors of the Sierra Club authorizes the filing of a lawsuit against the U.S Forest Service to prevent Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort.
  • 1973 - Buena Vista world premieres the live-action feature film Superdad in selected theaters in Los Angeles.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs NBC Nights at the Movies featuring The Three Lives of Thomasina.
  • 1984 - Disney releases the short film Frankenweenie to theaters in Los Angeles.
  • 1986 - The two hour TV movie The Christmas Star airs.
  • 1986 - The Big Thunder Barbecue restaurant opens in Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1991 - The ABC TV network airs the film Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the Disney Sing Along Songs film compilation The Lion King - Circle of Life on laserdisc in the US, for US$25.
  • 1994 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas as a Deluxe CAV laserdisc Edition, for US$100. It also includes The Making of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Vincent, and Frankenweenie.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Royal Tenenbaums to theaters in the USA.
  • 2004 - Touchstone releases the film Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition on DVD in the USA. Price is US$29.99.
  • 2004 - Disney releases the DisneyToon Studios short film The Cat that Looked at a King on DVD.
  • 2004 - Disney releases the film The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement on videocassette and DVD in the USA.
  • 2008 - Turner Classic Movies airs The Age of Believing: The Disney Live-Action Classics on TV.
  • 2014 - The ABC TV network airs the special Backstage with Disney on Broadway: Celebrating 20 Years.
  • 2017 - The Walt Disney Company announces that it will acquire most of 21st Century Fox, including the 20th Century Fox film studio, for $66 billion.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1955 - At General Motors' Arizona Desert Proving Ground, Zora Arkus-Duntov drives 1955 Corvette test car #5951 X-87 to 155.2mph.
  • 1962 - Chevrolet announces that the Z06 option can now be selected for the model 867 Corvette convertible, as well as the model 837 coupe.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The League of Nations expels the Soviet Union for aggression.
  • 1939 - British submarine Ursula sinks a German cruiser in the mouth of the Elbe River.
  • 1939 - (1700 hours) Norwegian politician Vidkun Quisling meets with Adolf Hitler in Germany. He suggests Germany launch a pre-enptive strike on Norway. Quisling says he would take control of the Norwegian government through a coup.
  • 1939 - (by 1800 hours) Adolf Hitler issues an order that Denmark and Norway be seized and occupied during the upcoming attack on the West, to gain control of Norwegian territorial waters.
  • 1939 - 12 British Wellington bombers attack a German warship near the mouth of the Elbe River. Six planes are lost, with no damage inflicted to the ship.
  • 1941 - (1000 hours) 30 Japanese bombers attack Wake Island, destroying one of two remaining US fighter planes.
  • 1941 - Quote by Adolf Hitler to General Oshima, Japanese Ambassador to Berlin, regarding the sudden Japanese attack on the US: "You gave the right declaration of war, this method is the only proper one.".
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive number 40, for French coastal fortifications to be overhauled, and strengthened as rapidly as possible.
  • 1943 - (0600 hours) In Italy, the Canadian Royal 22nd Regiment begins a one-hour artillery barrage of German positions, in preparation for an attack toward Casa Berardi.
  • 1943 - (about 1400 hours) In Italy, south of Ortona, C Company of the Canadian Royal 22nd Regiment captures Casa Berardi overlooking The Gully at the south-west end, allowing firing on German positions in The Gully.
  • 1944 - A US government report "Reports on the Atom-splitting Bomb" includes a decoded message intercept from Japanese embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, to headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, noting that the "atom-splitting bomb" was first used by the German Army in 1943 against the 19th Infantry Regiment of Russians, 150km southeast of Kursk, a few 5kg bombs wiped them out, and were also previously used versus Russians in the Crimea.

Video game history:

  • 1993 - Nintendo releases the Fire Emblem video game for the Super Famicom in Japan, the first 24-Megabit cartridge.
  • 1999 - Sega of America and Excite@Home announce a partnership to build Sega's Dreamcast Network, an Internet gaming portal.
  • 2001 - Panasonic releases the SLGC-10 video game system in Japan. The system, also known as "Q", is a special GameCube which can play audio/video CD/DVD discs. Price is 39,800 yen (about US$305).
  • 2001 - In Australia, the government bans the sale of Grand Theft Auto III in the country. The Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to rate the game due to its graphic violence.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Advance system with Orange or Black cases in Japan. They also include improved brighter display screens.
  • 2001 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil Gaiden video game for the Game Boy Color in the US.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. At a shopping mall, a child plays an educational video game where the players blast the state capitals on a map of the USA.
  • 2004 - Spike TV holds its annual video game awards in California. Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Best Action Game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Best Soundtrack: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Best Performance by a Human Male: Samuel L. Jackson in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Best First-Person Action Game: Halo 2. Designer of the Year: Jason Jones and Bungie Studios (Halo 2). Best Performance by a Human Female: Brooke Burke in Need for Speed Underground 2. Best Driving Game: Burnout 3: Takedown. Best Song: "American Idiot" by Green Day in Madden NFL 2005. Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat: Deception. Hottest Video CyberVixen: BloodRayne in BloodRayne 2. Best Game Based on a Movie: The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay. Best Sports Game: Madden NFL 2005. Best Military Game: Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Best New Technology: Nintendo DS. Best RPG: Fable.

Swedish history:

  • 1988 - Lisbet Palme, widow of murdered Olof Palme, identifies Christer Pettersson as the murderer in a videotaped police line-up.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1981 - Nickle Arts Museum announces the resurfacing of the original 1858 double set of coins of the Province of Canada.
  • 2010 - The Canadian Senate Committee on National Finance releases a report recommending the Royal Canadian Mint cease production of the 1-cent coin and withdraw it from circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1870 - House Resolution 2525 is introduced in the House of Representatives, calling for redemption of all copper, bronze, and copper-nickel coins previously authorized by law.
  • 1899 - The US Mint produces all 50,026 examples of the 1900 Lafayette commemorative silver dollar.
  • 1910 - The US Senate confirms George E. Roberts as Mint director for a second term.
  • 1973 - The design competition for the 1976 bicentennial coins closes.
  • 2006 - US Mint implements regulations to limit export or melting of 1-cent and 5-cent coins.
  • 2010 - President Barack Obama signs into law H.R. 6162 the Modernization, Oversight, and Continuity Act of 2010, allowing the US Mint to test new metals for coinage.

Sports history:

  • 1894 - Day One first Test Cricket Australia versus England; Australia 5-346 (Giffen 161, Gregory 85).
  • 1894 - Test Cricket debut of Joe Darling, Ernie Jones, Archie MacLaren.
  • 1901 - First table tennis tournament is held at the London Royal Aquarium.
  • 1903 - Reg Foster completes 287 England versus Australia on Test Cricket debut.
  • 1915 - Jack Johnson becomes world heavyweight boxing champion.
  • 1920 - Heavyweight Jack Dempsey knocks out Bill Brennan in 12 for heavyweight boxing title in New York City, New York.
  • 1928 - Second Test Cricket Australia versus England starts with Donald Bradman 12th man.
  • 1930 - New York Giants defeat Notre Dame 22-0 in a charity game.
  • 1935 - Test Cricket debut of Leslie "Chuck" Fleetwood-Smith versus South Africa, Durban.
  • 1938 - American League permits Cleveland and Philadelphia to play night baseball games.
  • 1938 - Major leagues agree on standard ball.
  • 1938 - Baseball major leagues disagree on increasing rosters from 23 to 25.
  • 1938 - Will Harridge is elected to a 10-year-term as American League (baseball) president.
  • 1941 - First NFL division playoff, Chicago Bears beat Green Bay Packers 33-14.
  • 1947 - Cleveland Browns beat New York Yankees 14-3 in AAFC championship game.
  • 1950 - Baseball owners choose Lou Perini (Boston Braves), Phil Wrigley (Chicago Cubs), Del Webb (New York Yankees), and Ellis Ryan (Cleveland Indians) to select new commissioner.
  • 1952 - R H Shodhan scores 110 on Test Cricket debut versus Pakistan, Calcutta.
  • 1953 - Brooklyn Dodgers signs pitcher Sandy Koufax.
  • 1960 - Australia versus West Indies first Test Cricket at the Gabba ends in a tie.
  • 1960 - Washington Senators baseball team joins American League.
  • 1969 - Bishen Bedi takes 7-98 (career-best) versus Australia at Calcutta.
  • 1974 - New York Islanders' Glenn Resch's first shut-out opponent-Los Angeles Kings 3-0.
  • 1974 - Viv Richards scores first Test Cricket ton 192 versus India 20 fours 6 sixes.
  • 1977 - Boston Red Sox trade Fergie Jenkins to Texas Rangers for John Poloni and cash.
  • 1977 - Test Cricket debut of Abdul Qadir, versus England at Lahore.
  • 1980 - Anders Kailur scores on 6th New York Islanders' penalty shot.
  • 1980 - Minnesota Vikings pass for 456 yards against Cleveland Browns, winning 28-24.
  • 1980 - Nancy Lopez/Curtis Strange win LPGA J C Penney Golf Classic.
  • 1980 - New Orleans Saints end 14-game losing streak, beat New York Jets 21-20.
  • 1982 - Marcel Dionne, Los Angeles, California, becomes 9th NHL player to score 500 goals.
  • 1984 - Sports announcer Howard Cosell retires from Monday Night Football.
  • 1987 - Allan Border scores 205 versus New Zealand to become Australia's top rungetter.
  • 1988 - CBS' US$1.1 billion bid wins exclusive 1990-94 Major League Baseball rights.
  • 1988 - NBA's Miami Heat wins first game ever, 89-88 (Los Angeles Clippers), after 17 losses.
  • 1991 - 57th Heisman Trophy Award: Desmond Howard, Michigan (world record).
  • 1992 - Lennox Lewis given WBC title, when Riddick Bowe refuses to fight him.
  • 1996 - 62nd Heisman Trophy Award: Danny Wuerffel, Florida (quarterback).
  • 1997 - Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper win LPGA Diners Club Matches.
  • 1997 - Phoenix Coyotes player Mike Gartner is 5th NHL player to score 700 goals.
  • 2007 - (to December 24) FAI World Grand Prix Gliding Championship at Omarama, New Zealand.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Seattle Kraken beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Vancouver Canucks beats Columbus Blue Jackets by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Edmonton Oilers by score 5-1.

  • 2009 - NASA launches the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite on a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite is designed to uncover hidden cosmic objects.
  • 2013 - Chinese spacecraft Chang'e 3, carrying the Yutu rover, becomes the first spacecraft to "soft"-land on the Moon since 1976 and the third ever robotic rover to do so.

  • 2005 - Shakidor Dam fails in Pakistan due to heavy rain.

USA history:

  • 1782 - Charleston, South Carolina, evacuated by British.
  • 1793 - First state road in US authorized, Frankfort, Kentucky to Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • 1798 - David Wilkinson of Rhode Island patents a nut and bolt machine.
  • 1799 - George Washington, first President of the USA (1789-97), dies at Mount Vernon, Virginia, at age 67.
  • 1819 - Alabama admitted to the United States as the 22nd state.
  • 1853 - US Assay Office at San Francisco is discontinued.
  • 1863 - Battle of Bean's Station - Confederacy repulses USA in Tennessee.
  • 1889 - American Academy of Political and Social Science is organized, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

  • 1987 - Chrysler pleads no contest to selling driven vehicles as new.
  • 1988 - US agrees to talk to Palestine Liberation Organization (first time in 13 years).
  • 1994 - A Learjet piloted by Richard Anderson and Brad Sexton misses an elementary school and crashes into an apartment complex in Fresno, California, killing both pilots and injuring several apartment residents.
  • 1999 - Algerian Ahmed Ressam is arrested while crossing the United States-Canada border at Port Angeles, Washington, when United States Customs finds explosives in the trunk of his automobile. The arrest causes fears of a terrorist attack in the United States, and is a major factor in the cancellation of a public New Year's celebration in Seattle, Washington. Ressam is later convicted in a plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport on New Year's Eve.
  • 2020 - The United States removes Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
  • 2020 - The United States places sanctions on Turkey in retaliation for their purchase of a S-400 missile system from Russia, making the first time they have sanctioned a NATO ally.
  • 2020 - The United States and Canada begin mass vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

  • 1287 - Zuider Zee seawall in Holland collapses with loss of 50,000 lives.
  • 1819 - Alabama admitted to the USA as the 22nd state.
  • 1825 - Uprising in Russia against Tsar Nicholas I begins.
  • 1911 - South Pole first reached, by Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
  • 1927 - Iraq gains independence from Great Britain, but British troops remain.
  • 1981 - Israel annexes Golan Heights (seized from Syria in war of 1967).
  • 2004 - The world's tallest bridge, the Millau bridge over the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains, France, is opened by President Jacques Chirac.
