Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - Microsoft agrees to pay royalties to Spyglass of close to US$1 per Web browser shipped for Windows 3.1 and the Macintosh OS.
  • 1995 - (near midnight) Microsoft and Sun Microsystems agree on terms for Microsoft to license Java for its Web browser software.
  • 2000 - Infogrames of France acquires Hasbro Interactive of the USA for US$5 million cash and US$95 million in stock.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1940 - Walt Disney asks Art Babbit to reconvene the Cartoonists Federation union.
  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Big Red, part one.
  • 1974 - Disney releases the animated and live-action featurette film Man, Monsters and Mysteries to theaters in South Africa.
  • 1976 - The TV special Christmas in Disneyland with Art Carney airs, featuring Sandy Duncan and Glen Campbell.
  • 1987 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Student Exchange, part two.
  • 1992 - The Fox TV network airs the last episode of the series Woops!.
  • 1992 - The Tinker Bell Toy Shop in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is renamed Tinker Bell's Treasures.
  • 1993 - Guyana issues 26 postage stamps depicting scenes from Donald Duck films.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • The episode title "Homer Simpson in: 'Kidney Trouble'" may be a reference to the Disney animated short film Roger Rabbit in: Tummy Trouble.
    • One scene in an "Animatronic Saloon" of a ghost town shows a cowboy chasing a showgirl in robot saloon, a reference to a similar scene of a pirate chasing a woman in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

  • 2012 - The Be Our Guest Restaurant opens in the Beast's Castle in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom, at Walt Disney World.
  • 2012 - The After Market Shop opens in the exit area of Test Track in Epcot.
  • 2015 - The film Captain EO ceases playing in Epcot at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1963 - At the International Bahamas Speed Week races in Nassau, the 112-mile Governor's Trophy race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in prototype class and 3rd overall is the #50 Grand Sport #003, driven by Roger Penske.
    • Finishing 2nd in prototype class and 4th overall is the #65 Grand Sport #004, driven by Augie Pabst.
    • Finishing 3rd in prototype class and 6th overall is the Grand Sport #005, driven by Richard Thompson, despite a blown engine.
    The highest finishing Cobra is eighth.
  • 1964 - The 250-mile Nassau Trophy race of the Nassau Speed Week is held in the Bahamas. Finishing 23rd overall is the George Wintersteen #12 Corvette Grand Sport #005 driven by George Wintersteen.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - France and Germany sign "good neighbor" treaty disclaiming territorial designs.
  • 1941 - Russian forces counterattack German positions near Moscow, forcing them back as much as 100 miles.
  • 1941 - Vannevar Bush, head of the American Office of Scientific Research and Development, receives Presidential approval for an all-out effort in atomic research.
  • 1941 - The British government declares war on Finland, Hungary, and Romania.
  • 1941 - (about 2200 hours Washington) US President Franklin Roosevelt reads the decoded version of 13 of 14 parts of the Japanese reply to the US final offer of peace terms. Roosevelt says "This means war".
  • 1941 - (night) Five large Japanese submarines lie at the mouth of Pearl Harbor, each with a two-man midget submarine. The midget submarines are to enter the harbor before dawn, prepared to attack ships when the aerial assault takes place.
  • 1942 - 93 British aircraft attack Eindhoven radio factories, hitting it hard. 14 planes are shot down.
  • 1943 - A British division takes Mount Camino in Italy.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces in Italy begin an assault across the Moro River on three fronts. The main force is centered across from San Leonardo, with two smaller diversionary assaults near Villa Rogatti, and near the coast of the Adriatic sea.
  • 1943 - (late) In Italy, the First Special Service Force captures Hill 907 below Monte Camino.
  • 1944 - (evening) 475 British Lancaster and 12 Mosquito bombers attack an oil plant at Leuna, near Leipzig and Merseburg, Germany.
  • 1991 - Palau issues ten postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II in the Pacific.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Mike Perez scores a world record 30,780 on the Moon Shuttle arcade game.
  • 1995 - Sony announces sales of the PlayStation video game system in the US to date: 300,000 units. Sales of the Sega Saturn video game system in the US to date: 130,000.
  • 1996 - Enix releases the Dragon Quest III Remix video game for the Super Famicom in Japan.
  • 2004 - Auction sales begin for final assets of Acclaim Entertainment.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Mario Party 6 video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - LucasArts releases the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2006 - Ubisoft releases the Star Wars: Lethal Alliance video game for the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1305 - King Birger, Duke Erik, and Valdemar attack and capture Torgils Knutsson, taking him to prison in Stockholm Castle.
  • 1611 - The Riksdag meets. Kristina and Prince Johan both decline further service as regents.
  • 1865 - The nobility Estate of the riksdag spend a third day discussing the reform proposal.
  • 1917 - Finland declares its independence.

USA coin history:

  • 2006 - The Joan Switt Langbord family files suit against the U.S. Treasury Department seeking the return of ten 1933 double eagles surrendered to the Mint in 2004.

Sports history:

  • 1873 - First international football game in US: Yale 2, Eton (England) 1.
  • 1913 - Chicago White Sox beat New York Giants 9-4 in exhibition game in Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1925 - Record 73,000 pay to watch Chicago Bears football beat New York Giants 19-7.
  • 1930 - 18th Canadian Football League Grey Cup: Toronto Balmy Beach defeat Regina Roughriders, 11-6.
  • 1939 - 5th Heisman Trophy Award: Nile Kinnick, Iowa (Half Back).
  • 1953 - Cleveland Browns' Lou "Toe" Groza kicks 8 PATs, beating New York Giants 62-14.
  • 1955 - New York psychologist Joyce Brothers wins TV's $64,000 Question on boxing.
  • 1960 - American League grants Gene Autry a franchise, Los Angeles Angels.
  • 1961 - 27th Heisman Trophy Award: Ernie Davis, Syracuse (Half Back).
  • 1968 - Baseball dismisses Commissioner William Eckert after three years.
  • 1968 - PBA National Championship won by Wayne Zahn.
  • 1970 - Cleveland Cavaliers' first NBA home victory, beating Buffalo Braves 108-106.
  • 1973 - National League votes to move San Diego Padres to Washington DC (doesn't happen).
  • 1975 - 41st Heisman Trophy Award: Archie Griffin, Ohio State (Running Back).
  • 1981 - Rob de Castella of Australia sets marathon record at 2:08:18.
  • 1986 - 52nd Heisman Trophy Award: Vinny Testaverde, Miami Florida (quarterback).
  • 1987 - Christa Rothenburger skates female world record 500 metre (39.39 seconds).
  • 1987 - Jane Crafter/Steve Jones win LPGA J C Penney Golf Classic.
  • 1988 - Agnes Neil Williams purchases Baltimore Orioles for $70 million; Eli Jacobs becomes CEO.
  • 1988 - Merv Hughes takes 13 wickets versus West Indies at the WACA but Australia lose.
  • 1988 - Milwaukee Bucks win their 1,000th NBA game (second fastest).
  • 1990 - NHL grants conditional membership to Tampa Bay Lightning.
  • 1990 - Shoeless Joe Jackson's signature is sold for $23,100.
  • 1992 - 81st Davis Cup: USA beats Switzerland in Fort Worth (3-1).
  • 1992 - Dottie Mochrie/Dan Forsmann win LPGA J C Penney Golf Classic.
  • 1992 - San Francisco 49ers' player Jerry Rice catches NFL record 101st touchdown.
  • 1992 - San Francisco Giants renig on $43 million pact with Barry Bonds.
  • 1993 - Gunda Niemann skates ladies world record 5 km 7:13.29.
  • 1996 - Mashonaland defeats England in first-class tour match.
  • 2005 - The Toronto Blue Jays agree to a five-year, US$55 million deal with A.J. Burnett.
  • 2021 - The United States announces a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing in response to China's human rights record.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Pittsburgh Penguins beats Seattle Kraken by score 6-1.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Vancouver Canucks beats Los Angeles Kings by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Arizona Coyotes by score 4-1.

  • 1820 - US President James Monroe is re-elected, with Daniel D Tompkins as Vice-President.
  • 1825 - US President John Adams suggests establishment of a US observatory.
  • 1849 - Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery in Maryland.
  • 1862 - US President Abraham Lincoln orders hanging of 39 Santee Sioux Indians.
